[gentoo-user] problem emerging util-linux
Hi, I am using gentoo since one month. Today I tried an emerge --update system after an emerge --sync. However, I got an error emerging util-linux. I am using a custom compiled vanilla kernel from kernel.org. uname -a says: Linux laptop 2.6.32.8 #4 SMP PREEMPT Sat Feb 27 04:25:19 CET 2010 i686 Intel(R) Celeron(R) M processor 1.70GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux Here is the output of emerge --info =sys-apps/util-linux-2.17-r1: Portage 2.1.7.17 (default/linux/x86/10.0, gcc-4.3.4, glibc-2.10.1-r1, 2.6.32.8 i686) = System Settings = System uname: Linux-2.6.32.8-i686-Intel-R-_Celeron-R-_M_processor_1.70GHz-with-gentoo-2.0.1 Timestamp of tree: Sat, 27 Feb 2010 11:15:01 + app-shells/bash: 4.1_p2 dev-lang/python: 2.6.4-r1, 3.1.1-r1 dev-util/cmake: 2.6.4-r3 sys-apps/baselayout: 2.0.1 sys-apps/openrc: 0.6.0-r1 sys-apps/sandbox:2.2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.65 sys-devel/automake: 1.9.6-r2, 1.10.3, 1.11.1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.20-r1 sys-devel/gcc: 4.3.4 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.1 sys-devel/libtool: 2.2.6b virtual/os-headers: 2.6.32 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" ACCEPT_LICENSE="* -...@eula" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/share/X11/xkb" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/ca-certificates.conf /etc/env.d /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/gentoo-release /etc/sandbox.d /etc/terminfo /etc/texmf/language.dat.d /etc/texmf/language.def.d /etc/texmf/updmap.d /etc/texmf/web2c /etc/udev/rules.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="assume-digests distlocks fixpackages news parallel-fetch protect-owned sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-logs unmerge-orphans userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mirror.netcologne.de/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.join.uni-muenster.de/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo http://linux.rz.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/download/gentoo-mirror/ ftp://linux.rz.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/gentoo-mirror/ ftp://mirror.netcologne.de/gentoo/ ftp://ftp6.uni-muenster.de/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo ftp://sunsite.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/pub/Linux/gentoo ftp://ftp.ipv6.uni-muenster.de/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo " LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1" LINGUAS="de en en_GB es fr" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_CONFIGROOT="/" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY=" " SYNC="rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X acl alsa berkdb bzip2 cli cracklib crypt cups cxx dri emacs flac fortran gdbm gnutls gpm iconv ipv6 jack mbox modules mudflap ncurses nls nptl nptlonly openmp pam pcre perl pppd python readline reflection session spl ssl sysfs tcpd unicode vorbis x86 xorg zlib" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mmap_emul mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_basic authn_alias authn_anon authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav_fs dav_lock deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation rewrite setenvif speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse evdev" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" LINGUAS="de en en_GB es fr" RUBY_TARGETS="ruby18" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="intel" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS # emerge --pv: [ebuild N] sys-apps/util-linux-2.17-r1 USE="crypt nls perl unicode -loop-aes -old-linux (-selinux) -slang (-uclibc)" and the emerge log: [32;01m*[0m CPV: sys-apps/util-linux-2.17-r1 [32;01m*[0m REPO: gentoo [32;01m*[0m USE: crypt elibc_glibc kernel_linux nls perl unicode userland_GNU x86 >>> Unpacking source... >>> Unpacking util-linux-ng-2.17.tar.bz2 to >>> /var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/util-linux-2.17-r1/work >>> Source unpacked in /var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/util-linux-2.17-r1/work >>> Preparing source in >

[gentoo-user] finding out current softlevel
Hello, I was wondering whether there is some way to find out the current running softlevel (which I gave to the kernel line in grub's menu.lst), for example to start another window manager depending on the softlevel or whatever other possible solutions? Maybe in a variable like $SOFTLEVEL ? Thanks for any hints, Gabriel

[gentoo-user] Nvidia and Radeon video cards in the same box.
First question should be, can this be done? I had 2 Nvidia videos cards, running 2 monitors, with X spanning both monitors. One card died and I replaced it with a Radeon video card. Can I still span X across the two monitors? Does the make/model of the cards matter at all? If the answer is yes, then my next step is figuring out why I can get either monitor to work alone, but can't get both of them to work together. More information will be provided once I know this is possible. Thanks much - Skippy

I’ve tried memtest86, memconf, memtester and none of them can point out what slot on the motherboard has the bad RAM. memtest86+ is what I use, but I have not found an application that will identify and report on its own a faulty module or controller out of a whole bank of them. Press F2 when it starts, to enable SMT support and get the tests done a bit faster. I know usually you just plug in one at a time. But memtest86 takes hours and I have…wait for it….16 slots to test DIMs on for this specific server with memory failure." You don't have to test 16 modules one at a time, although you will have to run the test more than once: Remove half (8) of the memory modules. Ensure what is left is installed in the slot combination recommended by the MoBo manufacturer. Test these. If no fault is found swap them for the other half. As soon as a fault is reported, remove half of this batch (4) and install the other 4 as recommended by the MoBo manufacturer. Rinse and repeat. This way you will eventually isolate the dodgy DIMM module, by running the test fewer than 16 times. Usually errors show in the first round of tests, but some times you may need to wait for more than 8 passes. Before you start any of this it is a good idea to just reseat the modules one at a time in case you have some dirt or oxidisation in any of the contacts. That could save a lot of hours ... Make sure you have marked clearly which batches have showed no errors - if you mix them up you will have to start from the beginning. I know I am stating the obvious, but I have been there with colleagues who like to tidy up other people's work space .

You should read [1] to really understand the issue, but as a workaround you can add the following to your kernel command line: "net.ifnames=0". Do it in /etc/default/grub (in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX variable) if you use GRUB2 (and create the config again with grub2-mkconfig), or in /boo/grub/grub.cfg, at the end of the "kernel" line, if you are using grub-legacy. The first entry in mc.ext that matches the extension takes precedence, so you want your custom entries at the top. What these entries do is to launch an xterm. The xterm is what actually launches mplayer. All the spew from mplayer appears in the xterm, not in MC. If I want to kill the player part way through a song/video, I can do it from the small xterm. The xterm automatically disappears as soon as the song/video finishes. # #FLAC and WAV and MP3 files (to free up mc console) regex/i/\.(wav|flac|mp3)$ Open=/usr/bin/xterm -e /usr/bin/mplayer %d/%p & # # Videos regex/i/\.(avi|mov|mp4|mpeg)$ Open=/usr/bin/xterm -e /usr/bin/mplayer %d/%p & This should also work for you with VLC. Substitute "vlc", or whatever, for "mplayer". This "indirection" method is useful for *ANY* program that spews diagnostics/whatever to the console that launched it. E.g. I get dignostics/etc with abiword. Thank you! I will try this out. That's a way of doing things that never would have occurred to me. -Skippy

[gentoo-user] How many people use KDE?
I wanna to know KDE and Gnome which is more popular.
Re: [gentoo-user] How many people use KDE?
It's nice of you to give me so detailed explanation! I think I would like to use gnome for long time ^_^ Thank you very much On Fri, 2006-01-20 at 15:29 +0100, Holly Bostick wrote: Neil Bothwick schreef: > On Fri, 20 Jan 2006 17:10:13 +0800, Linux Java wrote: > >> I wanna to know KDE and Gnome which is more popular. > > Why? Use whatever suits you. > I hope that you all appreciate my extreme restraint in not posting to this thread until now, given how very much I dislike KDE. But for the record, just so that all you KDE-heads don't skew the results com*plete*ly: I always (from my first attempts at Linux some 3 years ago) preferred GNOME to KDE. Never liked Nautilus, though (it's tied for second on my list of "most hated file managers"), and since I've never been fond of desktop icons and all that cr... junk... I still found it too heavy. So I switched to Openbox 3 (with a GTK "backend"), and now I use fvwm-crystal (with a GTK "backend"). Gnome-light is (always) installed, but I don't use it as a desktop. I have only two KDE-specific applications that I would not do without (both compiled -kde and -arts to the greatest extent possible): Krusader (though this needs Konq and some other KDE utils for best usage, as it recognizes KDE apps much much better than GTK apps for viewing files and the like), and K3b. These apps require kdebase, so I've got that, but the day you see me logging into KDE, you can rest assured that either: 1) my system is so seriously broke that it's the only DE/WM I can get into (which is pretty unlikely. I mean, I've got iceWM and *afterstep* on the system, for Pete's sake; the day that doesn't work but KDE does will be... "The" day); or 2) I have been replaced by an alien clone (shoot first, ask questions later). I prefer to use GTK-based applications wherever possible because I find them more attractive in general, and I'm more used to them (as a GNOME user originally), unless they're junk, like Totem, in which case I use "non-affiliated" programs like Xine or mPlayer. Yes, I know Totem can be configured to use a Xine backend. Imo, there's no point; if that's the only way Totem works, I might as well just use Xine. Plus I want to see when gStreamer gets its act together. However I have no objection to QT-based apps (as opposed to KDE apps) when necessary. It does need to be "necessary", though (meaning, if I need it, I'll install qdvdauthor, because there's no GTK alternative that I know of, but I can just as well use the CLI original, unless the GUI version has some additional feature or makes it easier to understand than the CLI version's man page). So anyway, Neil is of course right: use what you want; it's *your* desktop (finally!). I don't need a whole lot of GUI features (in fact I dislike a whole lot of GUI features), so KDE is not for me, the one who never liked Windows(-like) desktops, even when I was using Windows; I used an alternative shell from my Win98 days on. But for those who feel more comfortable with a more Windows-like environment, and Windows-like assumptions about what a user wants/needs from their desktop, KDE may be just the thing; that is, after all, what it's designed to do to a great extent. You can have it, though. I'll be elsewhere. Holly
