[gentoo-user] NFS Server Tuning

2008-01-24 Thread Stefan Onken
Hello,

I am running a x86 gentoo box as a nfs server. As a filesystem I am
using XFS on a 3ware Raid system.

The 3ware systems seems to be quite quick, although access via NFS
seems to be very slow. Any ideas how I can improve speed ? I was
expected a speed only limited by the 100 Mbit network. Now, the
speed is so slow, that reading/writing at the same time is nearly
impossible.

Any ideas how to improve the speed ?

hdparm on the gentoo box machine:
backup3 ~ # hdparm -tT /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb:
Timing cached reads:   4108 MB in  2.00 seconds = 2054.34 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads:  232 MB in  3.01 seconds =  77.09 MB/sec

/etc/exports on the gentoo box:
/mnt/backup/ 192.168.1.0/24
(rw,no_root_squash,async,no_subtree_check)

I am not even able to run a bonnie benchmark on the client. It seems
to hang while doing rewriting. Running bonnie on the nfs server
gives a fast result.

/etc/fstab on the client:
192.168.1.3:/mnt/backup /mnt/backup nfs
rw,users,async   0

http://pastebin.com/m72ae9d47

Any ideas ?

[gentoo-user] Performance SRCU42X

2008-03-11 Thread Stefan Onken
Hello,

I am using in a dual Xeon Server a SRCU42X SCSI RAID controller by
Intel. Fully equipped with 12 SCSI drives. (two different RAID5
drives). But I am fighting with a very poor performance. When
copying large files (2GB) from one directory to another I am
getting 13MB/seconds.

master ~ # uname -a
Linux master 2.6.22-gentoo-r9 #7 SMP Sun Nov 25 16:35:34 CET 2007
i686 Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.06GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I am using the Megaraid kernel drivers.
master ~ # grep -i mega /usr/src/linux/.config
CONFIG_MEGARAID_NEWGEN=y
CONFIG_MEGARAID_MM=y
CONFIG_MEGARAID_MAILBOX=y

master ~ # lspci -v
04:00.0 RAID bus controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic MegaRAID (rev
02)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation MegaRAID Intel RAID Controller
SRCU42X
Flags: bus master, stepping, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency

Memory at ff6f (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=64K]
Memory at fe78 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K]

Capabilities: [c0] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [d0] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask-

Also I can't use the webconsole of Intel. Not sure, if it's
expecting the kernel driver as a module. When starting the
webconsole and accessing it via http://IP:3570/ I am getting:
"No Raid Servers available"

Any ideas ?
Thanks

[gentoo-user] Palm Tungsten T5 help needed

2006-01-21 Thread Stefan Onken
Hello,

I am fighting now for a very long time to get my Palm T5 sync under
Linux. Unfortunately without any success, so maybe someone can
point me into the right direction. Ok, here is my setup:

1) kernel
Linux stonki 2.6.13-gentoo-r5 #3 SMP Thu Jan 12 21:24:53 CET 2006
x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ AuthenticAMD
GNU/Linux

CONFIG_USB_SERIAL=y
CONFIG_USB_SERIAL_VISOR=y
CONFIG_HOTPLUG=y

2) Udev
sys-fs/udev-070-r1
# PalmOne Tungsten T3
BUS="usb",SYSFS{serial}="12345467893ABC",NAME="pilot",OWNER="root",GROUP="tty",MODE="0660"
#
# This works for one user's Handspring Visor. Put the desired user
in the "usb" group.
KERNEL="ttyUSB[01]*",  NAME="tts/USB%n", GROUP="usb", MODE="0660"
3) System
stonki portage # rc-update -s | grep hotplug
 hotplug | boot

So, an up-to-date Kernel with Visor support, Udev is installed and
the hotplug daemon is running

--

4) I am now connecting the T5 to the computer without (!) pressing
anything !

stonki portage # udevinfo -p /sys/class/tty/ttyUSB3 -a
[...]
DRIVER=="visor"
[...]
SYSFS{product}=="palmOne Handheld"
SYSFS{serial}=="504E35424D35543556305848"

5) I am creating a new file in /etc/udev/rules.d
tonki rules.d # cat 10-udev.rules
# PalmOne Tungsten
BUS="usb",SYSFS{serial}="504E35424D35543556305848",NAME="pilot",OWNER="root",GROUP="tty",MODE="0660"
#
# This works for one user's Handspring Visor. Put the desired user
in the "usb" group.
KERNEL="ttyUSB[0123]*",  NAME="tts/USB%n", GROUP="usb", MODE="0660"

6) am using the unstable pilot-link version (the stable did not work
for me as well), but still no success:

a) I am attaching the T5 without (!) pressing the sync button.
In /var/log/messages it says:

Jan 21 18:44:22 stonki visor 2-1:1.0: Handspring Visor / Palm OS
converter detected
Jan 21 18:44:22 stonki usb 2-1: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter
now attached to ttyUSB2
Jan 21 18:44:22 stonki usb 2-1: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter
now attached to ttyUSB3

b) a /dev/pilot gets created
stonki rules.d # ls -als /dev/pilot
0 crw-rw  1 root tty 188, 2 Jan 21 18:44 /dev/pilot

c) stonki rules.d # pilot-xfer -p /dev/pilot --list
   Listening for incoming connection on /dev/pilot...

d) Pressing Hotsync
Jan 21 18:45:53 stonki visor 2-1:1.0: Handspring Visor / Palm OS
converter detected
Jan 21 18:45:53 stonki usb 2-1: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter
now attached to ttyUSB4
Jan 21 18:45:53 stonki usb 2-1: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter
now attached to ttyUSB5

WHY I am getting USB4 and USB5 ?

e) of course it does NOT work

any idea ?

Thanks Stonki

[gentoo-user] Gentoo on P7010: very quiet sound

2005-08-08 Thread Stefan Onken
Hello,

I installed last week on my Fijutsu Siemens P7010 Notebook Gentoo. The
sound is working fine after manuelly amending the modules for ALSA, but
its very very quiet. Even with alsamixer and kdemixer set to the top I
hardly hear anything. Any idea how to solve this ?

And a another question: Because the notebook doesn't have any volume
adjuster: is there any chance to get the [FN] Keys to work ?

Thanks

ignore me... ;:)

1) I found a setting in the bios
2) I used the "PCM" mixer in KDE and now its fine.

unmerge the old proftpd version, emerge the new proftpd version. For some
reasons, this will now install "ftpbase" and "proftpd". The configs are
not altered, so no worry. Works fine for me (I am running www.proftpd.de)

well, I am using:

BUS="usb", SYSFS{serial}="504E35424D42583456354E35",
KERNEL="ttyUSB[1357]",  SYMLINK="pilot"

some seconds after I am connecting the Palm (without pressing any
hotsync button !!! ) I am getting:

p7010 ~ # ls  -als /dev/tts/USB*
0 crw-rw-rw-  1 root tty 188, 0 Aug 12 20:01 /dev/tts/USB0
0 crw-rw-rw-  1 root tty 188, 1 Aug 12 20:01 /dev/tts/USB1

p7010 ~ # ls -als /dev/pilot
0 lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 8 Aug 12 20:01 /dev/pilot -> tts/USB1

but even now a test with the palm program stops here:

p7010 ~ # pilot-xfer --port /dev/pilot -L
   Listening to port: /dev/pilot
   Please press the HotSync button now...

the moment I am pressing the hotsync button, the device (/dev/pilot)
is disappearing for a second and will be created insteadly again:

resulting: Error read system info on /dev/pilot

kpilot is not able to connect at all :(
