If they are identical then I'm going to stick to k8. I don't really know
why k8 arch cpus have multiple -march options. I went back to k8 and
everything built and installed fine.

Although he works for Microsoft, Daniel is the one who created this
project. He has been a developer of several operating systems, including
Freebsd. I would, as a user, like for him to come back to the project,
if it means gentoo going back to the old way. On the other hand, his
major decisions with regard to gentoo should be voted on by the
developer/user community. I don't want gentoo to become another SuSE. I
don't want him to insidiously harm gentoo with the immunity of acting
president. Everything should be done in the open. There should be some
sort of constitution which protects gentoo from losing certain
principles or ethics. One of which is that it will always be free of
charge; at least from the gentoo foundation. He has to be, as acting
president, bound to a code of ethics or rules decided by the community.
It is clear that he cares for this project. He wants to come back but,
is he willing to come back as a leader under our conditions?

Is it a Dell with an ICH8 chipset? This is a well known bug and is fixed
in alsa-1.0.15. I have this same problem on my Dell D830 which runs
Gentoo and Ubuntu.

On Ubuntu I use a backported kernel and
'options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m42' in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

It's an HP dv6645us. I have ALSA modules built-in to the kernel. How can I set
the model option with this type of ALSA configuration.
If i choose to use the alsa-drivers ebuild do i include alsa in the kernel as a
module or do i have to include it at all?

I don't have an /etc/env.d/02locale file. I don't know the syntax of

My advice is not to use it yet. I thought 64-bit computers could bring
in a whole new dimension into the computing world. going from 16 to 32
bits was a significant improvement in terms of applications and what you
can do at a given time. You can see the big difference in Operating
systems and programs of various application going from 16 to 32. This
64-bit and even dual-core thing has still to bear fruit -- at least for
me. It's not faster by any noticeable difference and most applications
are not optimized for it. I won't switch until I know I can gain a major
advantage utilizing this technology.I have 2gigs of ram and still have
yet to use more than 200M at anytime. So, why do I need 8 gigs of memory
or more.

The best way I found to do this is to just write your own script and run
it at the default runlevel. write a script called wireless-up save it in
your /root directory. Then in /etc/conf.d/local.start add the script
name to the list: /root/wireless-up. Make sure the script is executable
with chmod 666 /root/wireless-up. Here is what mine looks like. I laugh
when I read this thing that I call a script. I'll be upgrading this in
the future but for now maybe someone has a better idea and/or script.

#!/bin/bash
DATE=`date +%m_%d_%Y`
ifconfig wlan0 up || "echo wlan up failed"
iwconfig wlan0 essid ACCESSPOINTNAME || "echo setting essid failed"
iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed || echo "setting mode to managed failed"
iwconfig wlan0 key restricted YOURKEYHERE || echo "key failed
verification"
dhclient wlan0 || echo "wlan0 failed to receive dhcp request response"
# if [ $DATE -ne `date +%m_%d_%Y -r /tmp/.wireless.*
rm /tmp/.wireless.*
iwconfig >> /tmp/.wireless.$DATE
exit 0

There was someone who asked for me to keep him or her updated with this
effort and this is why I'm posting back to the post with this info.

Well, a few months later and sound jack sound isolation issue is
corrected. Upgrade to ALSA-DRIVER 1.0.16 and you should be fine. You
might have to unmask it. Sound now ceases to emanate from my speakers
when headphones are plugged into my laptop (HP dv6645us). All thanks to
Tobin Davis and the alsa-project and a surprise from emerge --sync &&
emerge -uDNtv world

Here is my output from the alsa-info shell script, I hope this helps
someone out:

Dude,

you need to read the emerge man page. Seriously.

I intend you to think with my posts, not follow them blindly.

It's the new set syntax, available in recent 2.2 portages. I believe there is

some support in recent 2.1 as well

@system consists of the same packages as the old "system"

@world is the world set - the contents of your world file. It's not the same

as "world" as it excludes "system" whereas "world" implies that system is

included.

Re: [gentoo-user] Xine and Mplayer Sound problems

Subject: [gentoo-user] Xine and Mplayer Sound problems

Recently whenever I try to play a CD, or a file such as an .avi, Xine
instead generates a xine-out.wav and no sound. The video portion looks
perfect.
If I play the xine-out.wav, it is the audio track from the file I tried
to play.

Trying to play that same .avi with Mplayer yields a pop-up window.
It reports an error, "DVB card number must be between 1 and 4.
Like Xine, the video portion displays without problems.

Anyone have any ideas on possible causes?

Trying something like Ekiga, which has sound and video, works without
problems.

Thanks
Sean

What your USE flags for mplayer and xine? are Xine and Mplayer setup
correctly? Make sure there are is no option set to save audio to files.

Re: [gentoo-user] revdep-rebuild

2009-01-26 Thread Richard Marzan
I remember having a similar issue. Try blocking all gcc versions prior to 4.0.
As for uninstalling the current 3.x version -- I don't know how you would
remove it since you need the ebuild script that initially installed the current
3.x on your system to remove it safely. Have you updated your systems profile
(not gcc profile) or upgraded portage itself perhaps?

Re: [gentoo-user] audiocd:/mnt/cdrom not working

2007-09-01 Thread Richard Marzan
Have you tried making the /mnt/cdrom directory?

If so check the permissions using `ls -l` if that turns out fine try
linking /media/cdrom to /mnt/cdrom. It could be that your cdrom is being
mounted on /media/cdrom, therefore, you might have to link these
directories using: `ln -sf /mnt/cdrom /media/cdrom` with root
priveledges.

Run mount, When you insert the CD before you take the step that fails to
work for you and show me the output. Does the cd have to be mounted
before any operation takes place?

Yes, I was referring to that variable. Thanks. Sorry for top-posting but
it's hard not to do that at work with Outlook since reply doesn't format
the reply as you see above my post. I would have to edit ">" manually to
and add the date then send the reply. I'll try though.

[gentoo-user] NFS mount fail

2007-09-26 Thread Richard Marzan
I get this error when mounting an nfs share:

mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking
Either use "-o nolocks" to keep locks local, or start statd.

Anyone know what the problem might be? I followed the gentoo-wiki nfs
guide @ http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Share_Directories_via_NFS

rsize and wsize have been set on my client.

[gentoo-user] Gnome overriding screen resolution

2007-10-20 Thread Richard Marzan
Hello,

Gnome is giving me some issues with respect to screen resolution.
It doesn't want to display my preferred resolution nor does it have it
as an option in the drop-down menu. I set up my resolution in xorg.conf
but gnome quickly overrides the option. How can I stop gnome from
meddling with my resolution?

[gentoo-user] performance enhancement using x86_64-pc-linux-gnu?

2007-12-19 Thread Richard Marzan
Hello,

Today, I thought about changing the CHOST, even if it means performing
a fresh install, to the one in the subject line for performance
improvement. Am I wrong to assume that changing the CHOST to
x86_64-pc-linux-gnu and setting CFLAGS to athlon64 will offer faster
operation of apps? would it be sufficient to use i686-pc-linux-gnu as
the CHOST and use Athlon64 as the -march?

[gentoo-user] user command auditing

2008-07-16 Thread Richard Marzan
Is there a tool or a way of keeping track of which commands user's are
executing on a system? I understand that history files can be wiped out
and they don't really contain the time at which a command and it's
arguments were run so I refrain from relying on it.

Please Include CONFIG_SATA_AHCI=y into your configuration of the kernel
as well as CONFIG_SATA_NV=y

I believe the kernel docs indicate that the NVidia chipsets should be
supported by SATA_AHCI. Also, check your grub config. This is a snippet
of mine and I'm using SATA HD's on my laptop with an Nvidia chipset:

root (hd0,0) # the device where your /boot resides
kernel /linux-2.6.23-r8 root=/dev/sda2 # the device where / resides
