KDE 4.1 ebuilds are not yet in the official portage tree. You can get them from the kdesvn-portage overlay. It also contains the correct files for unmasking. HTH... Dirk
[gentoo-user] Can't start KDE
Hi all. We had a power outage the other day, while I was in the middle of an emerge world. Now that the system has booted, I can't get KDE to log me in. I get the splash page and the login page. When I enter my username/password, the screen blinks black and then displays an error message: Call to lnusertemp failed (temporary directories full?) Check your installation. I've checked the permissions and ownership of /tmp and /var/tmp. They are owned by root, world read/writable and sticky. The /var/log/X.*.log and /var/log/kde.log files don't indicate any type of errors. What do I do now? I do NOT want to rebuild this machine TIA, Mike.

I had the same "problem" here and thought a bit about it, and so, just to hopefully clear this up for others: Why should one store years old mailing lists mail _on the server_ for ever? Why is IMAP useful, because you can access your mails from anywhere and from multiple clients. But that counts only for those mails which have a chance to be of interest at different places (complete personal email, probably). This is certainly not the case for year old mailinglist mails (which are, in the case of debian-user at least, also available from public archives). Why store these maybe hundred of megabytes of mail on the server, there is just no reason. And it should not surprise that clients (and i guess servers alike) need a huge amount of time to scan through huge directories, even if only comparing the local cache. If you don't trust the public mailing list archives, do it like I did for now. Create a local mailbox (you have to find some certain machine for this of course, i suggest your desktop at home). I called it "archived mail". Then create e.g. a folder debian-user and just move all mails from the IMAP server to that local folder. Afterwards you can still access your archived mails from that list, just not from everywhere (well actually you can by using the public archives), but you have to ask yourself again: Why should i need that? Now I have the huge folders lying on my hard-disk, i can search _quickly_ through tenthousands of mails, and the access time for opening the remote folders is greatly reduced. If I feel like cleaning up again, maybe after 1-2k mails, i just move them over again. Reducing unneccessary traffic, saving precious resources, and able to search the archive much quicker. This is just my opinon, maybe someone who had _all_ his mails on IMAP till now might rethink this. Cheers, Patric

Hi! I have used 2-3 machines for 3 years and i have the same problem what yours is. Fortunately one of my machines isn't laptop and always working. There made i an IMAP server from this tutorial: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Email_System_for_the_Home_Network If I am somewhere in the Universe i can read my emails through gmail, or through ssh on my machine wih mutt which is running in screen. For this have to set fetchmail that leave the emails on gmail after download. If I am at home, i can connect my IMAP server on localhost with ClawsMail. I think this working fine for me. -- - - -- Csanyi Andras -- http://sayusi.hu -- Sayusi Ando -- "Bízzál Istenben és tartsd szárazon a puskaport!".-- Cromwell
[gentoo-user] Mouse Quits After Gnome Login
I have a laptop that has been working fine until my last world update yesterday. FWIW, it's probably been at least 3 months since the last update. I'm running the 2.6.25-r4 kernel from gentoo sources. Gnome version is 2.22. Xorg version is 7.3. Mouse is actually a Synaptics Touchpad on the laptop. xorg.conf file has not changed and uses synaptics driver and evdev. The symptom is that X starts and gdm loads. Touchpad mouse still works. However after logging on and somewhere during the Gnome splash screen, the mouse stops responding. Any ideas on what might cause this behavior? Thanks, Drew

[gentoo-user] (SOLVED) Re: distcc trivial issue (i'm sure)
I have no idea what the problem was exactly, but I'm sure it was trivial. In fact, I highly suspect it was just that I didn't restart distccd or something as boring as that... I guess a good sleep + a good shower + a good coffee was what I needed to get it working! I tested several values of -j and all give pretty much the same results which is about 15% acceleration (computers are 433MHz/128Mb(swaps-a-lot), 450MHz(512Mb) and 700MHz(512Mb)). I don't think I should expect more acceleration, should I? Anyway, thanks and now, let's update these ancient monsters! Simon Simon wrote: Hi, I've followed several docs about setting up distcc, one from the gentoo manuals and the other on distcc's website. I believe I understand the whole concept pretty well, but my problem is: only the first host compiles. I have 3 hosts, if I use nmap, it can detect the distcc port is open what version of distcc and gcc it's using. This proves it's running on all hosts. I have scp all distcc config files to all hosts, including make.conf (3 pcs are the same arch, etc). And of course option -j4 If I run emerge on a pkg, I will see the log populating on the 3 machines, there must be communication! After manipulating DISTCC_DIR, I got distccmon-gui to work. The monitor will show at the begining that "localhost" is compiling a small file during the ./configure. Then when compilation kicks in, "localhost" stops working completely and "192.168.96.64"(ip of localhost on lan) starts working steadily. IP:*.64 is the first host in /etc/distcc/hosts. I have set the logs to debug level, which i believe is the level that will show ALL information (right?). I have read through that log during a compilation, specially at the start, and found absolutely no mention of the IP of any other hosts, nothing talking about connection issues or similar. I'm stuck here, I don't know what I'm looking for and help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Simon

[gentoo-user] Fingerprint reader in Thinkpad R61
I bought a Lenovo ThinkPad R61 these days, nearly everything runs fine under gentoo, I am very happy so far. The only feature missing is the fingerprint reader, my googling lead me to the fact that the reader is not supported by the thinkfinger-pkg because it's a TouchStrip reader. A howto is here: http://knowledge76.com/index.php/Fingerprint_Reader_Installation Does anyone know if there is already some ebuild for this somewhere? Maybe some overlay? I'd like to know before I start to write my own ebuild for this. Thanks a lot for any pointer, Stefan
Re: [gentoo-user] Fingerprint reader in Thinkpad R61
Hi, I had similar problem, but under debian. Nevertheless the way described on thinkwiki.org (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_enable_the_fingerprint_reader) was working for the first time even on 64bit system. Lukas 2008/8/1, Stefan G. The only "legitimate" behavior I see is that Firefox > is a dependency for a package that is not part of your world. I think I see now what caused this. It happened after I added Fx 3.0.1 to package.keywords. `emerge -u world` was pulling in mozilla-firefox-3.0.1 because it was in world, but `emerge -uD world` was not pulling it in because I have installed packages which have mozilla-firefox-2* as a dependency. Now that I've installed mozilla-firefox-3.0.1, `emerge -uD world` wants to downgrade me to 2.0.0.16, and `emerge -u world` doesn't see anything to do. -- »Q«
