   Product: Tomcat 6
   Version: 6.0.20
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: major
  Priority: P2
 Component: Catalina

when you try to import an inexisting page with js fragments in url parameters
like

http://.../page.jsp?paramName=";alert('BT_XSS')">¶m2=2...
the following content is inserted into response:
"The requested resource ({URL ABOVE}) is not available."
the content is not encoded so js code from url is being executed

i think DefaultServlet should do smth like

response.getWriter().write(sm.getString("defaultServlet.missingResource",
  urlEncoder.encode(requestUri)));
but html- or xml- encoding might be better

Tomcat encryption algorithms in binary

2010-01-20 Thread Shan, Justine
Hi,

As far as I know, the only encryption implemented by Tomcat itself is SSL. But
I need to know what exactly algorithms have been implemented and distributed
with the binary from Apache Tomcat 5.X and 6.

To my understanding, Tomcat relies on the JVM or JCE installed on the user's
machine to implement SSL, which implies Tomcat doesn't ship any cryptographic
algorithms but only implements SSL protocol. On the other hand, from the Legal
page Tomcat is classified as 5D002, strong cryptography. This implies Tomcat
does contain (and thus ships with) encryption implementation. And I need to
know what exactly algorithms are implemented.

Please reply to me at justine.s...@sap.com

Thank you very much!

Justine

Sorry, but your vague 'need' to know does not constitute a claim
on developers' time.

Try the users' list, or the documentation or the source code.

Existing documentation yielded nothing. Perhaps I should've been more specific
on the "need". I need to assess the algorithm info in order to ensure export
compliance for one of our products that uses Tomcat. I thought Dev would be
more suitable for this question other than the Legal...

Tested
apache-tomcat-6.0.24.exe
apache-tomcat-6.0.24-windows-x86.zip

Environment: JRE 6u17 on WinXP 32-bit
Tested with and without Tomcat-Native 1.1.19, with and without Security Manager.

When running with Security Manager I stumbled upon the following:
if I start with a pristine installation (from a zip file), and the
first page that I access is

http://localhost:8080/examples/jsp/jsp2/el/implicit-objects.jsp?foo=bar

I receive AccessControlException.

The stack trace is the same as in Bug 48438, mentioning
"ProtectedFunctionMapper.getMapForFunction()" as the place where class
loading was forbidden, but this time it is a perfectly valid JSP where
it is observed.

If I refresh the page, I can get a NoClassDefFoundError, but unless I
restart Tomcat and access some other JSP first I cannot get rid of
the error.

Looks like a showstopper.

Other issues that I observed are minor.

1) When stopping Tomcat Windows service,
not all of the shutdown sequence log messages reach the log. I see
only "Stopping service Catalina", but not the "Stopping Coyote"
message.

It looks like the JVM shutdown hook that shuts down the logging
subsystem is started before the server thread stops. (Maybe some
Thread.join() call will fix the issue).

None of the messages before the shutdown sequence are lost, so I think
it is a minor issue.

2) When running with Tomcat-native 1.1.19 on Windows
when shutting down Tomcat (either with shutdown.bat or stopping a
service) I either
a) observe an Error message in the log (as the last message in the
shutdown sequence), or
b) hs_err_pid.log is generated, reporting an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION.

When running as a service you'll only observe b), because of the
logging issue that I described above. The error location is in
org.apache.tomcat.jni.Socket.accept

I think it is a minor issue, because it only happens on shutdown. I'll
file a Bugzilla issue with more details.

Best regards,
Konstantin Kolinko

It is a duplicate of bug 48580.

That this page would fail without SecurityManager is just a coincidence.
With a SecurityManager it does not initialize (fails in its ), and that
happens earlier than any EL evaluation takes place.

DO NOT REPLY [Bug 48582] New: JspServletWrapper.getServletContext() throws NullPointerException

2010-01-20 Thread bugzilla
https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=48582

   Summary: JspServletWrapper.getServletContext() throws
NullPointerException
   Product: Tomcat 6
   Version: 6.0.20
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
  Severity: major
  Priority: P2
 Component: Jasper
AssignedTo: dev@tomcat.apache.org
ReportedBy: tmcc...@yahoo-inc.com

We're getting this exception/stack trace in a web application:

''[2010-01-15 17:52:01,381] -  ERROR [org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase]

at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:595)

Looking at JspServletWrapper, I see that it has 2 constructors; one for JSP
pages, and another for tag files. The one for tag files has a problem in this
line:

   this.config = null; // not used

because this.config is indeed used by the public method getServletContext():

public ServletContext getServletContext() {
  return config.getServletContext();
}

and since that method is public, you can't safely say that this.config will not
be used. :) So this means that if you create a JspServletWrapper for a JSP tag
file, you can never call getServletContext() on it, or you'll generate the NPE
above. However, JspRuntimeContext does exactly that in the following block of
code, from the checkCompile() method:

Object [] wrappers = jsps.values().toArray();
for (int i = 0; i < wrappers.length; i++ ) {
JspServletWrapper jsw = (JspServletWrapper)wrappers[i];
JspCompilationContext ctxt = jsw.getJspEngineContext();
// JspServletWrapper also synchronizes on this when
// it detects it has to do a reload
synchronized(jsw) {
try {
ctxt.compile();
} catch (FileNotFoundException ex) {
ctxt.incrementRemoved();
} catch (Throwable t) {
jsw.getServletContext().log("Background compile failed",
t);
}
}
}

The values in the "jsps" map are both JSP files and tag files, as seen by
TagFileProcessor.loadTagFile(), which puts tag files there.

So to summarize, any JSP tag file that experiences a compilation failure inside
of the checkCompile() method will seem to generate this NullPointerException.

A secondary issue here is that if any problem occurs inside of the catch block
in the code pasted above (as is currently happening), the original exception is
swallowed forever. This is the Throw From Within Finally anti-pattern
(http://today.java.net/article/2006/04/04/exception-handling-antipatterns#throwFromWithinFinally)
and should be fixed as well.

2010-01-20 Thread bugzilla

--- Comment #1 from Tim McCune  2010-01-20 13:28:36 UTC
---
I should also have noted that after this NullPointerException occurs, we then
continue to get this error over and over:

ERROR
[org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.[jboss.web].[localhost].[/d].[jsp]]
Servlet.service() for servlet jsp threw exception
'java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/jsp/tag/meta/internal_002dtitle_tag

presumably for the JSP tag file whose compilation failed. I don't know if
that's the behavior you want, as the error is pretty cryptic. You may want
something more explicit like "compilation of this JSP failed"?

Reproduced in 6.0.20 with 6u18 and 6u17 JREs and catalina.policy file from
6.0.24. So, technically, it is not a regression.

Hi guys,

First of all, amazing work on the build environment. Instructions were easy to
follow and everything (including the unit tests) worked on the first go.
Contributing could not be easier!

Attached a patch containing the following:

- Added "catalina.config.filename" system property with a default value of
"catalina.properties". This way you can specify another config file to use
without having to worry about URLs or base directories.

- Updated documentation to include a description of the new property.

Let me know if there are any questions or anything missing from the patch.

Thanks!

Rob

4. wait a while and run  shutdown.bat
5. one of the following behaviours is observed:
a) a message is written to catalina..log after all other shutdown

I did not run the TCK, but I did run some local test scripts on
home-grown web apps. Same ones I've been running for a couple of
