Summary: The servlet with the value 0 in tag
must be loaded at first.
   Product: Tomcat 5
   Version: 5.5.20
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: Windows XP
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P3
 Component: Catalina
AssignedTo: tomcat-dev@jakarta.apache.org
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Servlet 2.4 specification says:
---
If the value is a positive integer or 0, the container must load
and initialize the servlet as the application is deployed.
The container must guarantee that servlets marked with lower integers
are loaded before servlets marked with higher integers.
---
I think the servlet with value 0 in tag must be loaded at the
first.

However, Tomcat loads the servlet at the last.

I am now looking at the patch. I will at least commit everything except
for the factory classes (we'll see about what to do with them later).

There's one glitch with the diff: the HandlerFactory class is missing.

Kent Tong wrote:

There's reloadable as a Context attribute, documented at
http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-5.5-doc/config/context.html, and you
can also define a list of static resources (not classes) to be watched
to trigger a reload, via the WatchedResources element. See the page
above and the default Context.xml that ships with Tomcat for an
example.

I wasn't referring to this attribute, I was referring to a classloaded
that reloads individual classes.
I know this was done some time ago, not sure if it was included in
tomcat or not, but search the dev archives.

Yes, I know about the reloadable flag. But what I'd like is to
reload it only when the webapp is accessed again. I don't
want it to keep reloading when I make changes to my Java
files. Only when I am ready to test run it, would I like it
to reload automatically.

RE: Tomcat Webservices JSR109 implementation

2007-03-01 Thread Carrion, Fabian \(GE Money, consultant\)
Hi,

There is only one Factory class :
ServiceRefFactory.java

I'm sorry, I haven't use HandlerFactory. A handler is a class which is going to
be instantiate and the object called before and after the call to the
webservice.

I use org.apache.naming.Handler class. I register the Handlers in a Collection
object, and then I get the Handlers in the ServiceRefFactory class and I add
them in the HandlerChain for the Service which is going to be created.

I think there is a still some work on the factories class too, because of the
dependecies with wsdl4j and jaxrpc.

Thanks

Fabien Carrion

I am now looking at the patch. I will at least commit everything except
for the factory classes (we'll see about what to do with them later).

There's one glitch with the diff: the HandlerFactory class is missing.

There will always be at least one manual step, because as things stand
right now a computer program can't read your mind ;) You don't want
it to reload automatically when a specific resource (or resources)
is/are modified, you don't want it to reload automatically on a time
basis, you don't want to use the Manager HTML reload interface or the
Ant tasks that invoke it in a script... What automatic options remain?

Fwd: Covering official Tomcat 6 release

Tomcat devs,

Anyone want to chat with DZone to answer their questions about Tomcat
6? They want a fairly quick response, so if no one says anything for
a few hours, I'll probably get back to them myself. I'd prefer
someone who's committed more code than myself to Tomcat 6, though ;)

Hi Yoav,

We saw at DZone that you guys have just released the first official
"stable" version of Apache Tomcat 6. I'd like to get someone on our end
assigned to communicate with appropriate members of the Tomcat team to
give this good exposure at DZone, Javalobby and EclipseZone. Maybe an
interview is in order, what do you think?

Could you consider who would be the best person/persons at your end and
get back to me asap?

Thanks very much,

[VOTE] Releasing Tomcat Connectors 1.2.21

2007-03-01 Thread Jean-Frederic
Hello Tomcat project members,

mod_jk 1.2.21 has been available for testing for some days.
No new bugs have been reported so far, so it is time to proceed with the
release vote.

If you want to take a look, the source distribution can be downloaded
from:

http://tomcat.apache.org/dev/dist/tomcat-connectors/jk/

The updated documentation can be found at

http://tomcat.apache.org/dev/dist/tomcat-connectors/jk/source/jk-1.2.21/docs/

So here's the vote, which will be open until Friday March 2, 12:00 GMT.

Apache Tomcat Connectors 1.2.21 is:
[ ] Stable - no major issues, no regressions
[ ] Beta - at least one significant issue -- tell us what it is
[ ] Alpha - multiple significant issues -- tell us what they are

Cheers,

Jean-Frederic

RE: Tomcat Webservices JSR109 implementation

2007-03-01 Thread Carrion, Fabian \(GE Money, consultant\)
Yes I'm sure. I did it that way, because I did it the way the other class were
done.

But at the end I don't need HandlerFactory, because we can't get a Handler
class doing a lookup on the context. The handler classes are registered in the
Service object.

I just needed a way to give the Handler class to the Service object. I hope I'm
clear :)

Thanks

Summary: Environment tags not being picked-up in DefaultContext
   Product: Tomcat 5
   Version: 5.5.20
  Platform: All
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
  Severity: regression
  Priority: P2
 Component: Catalina
AssignedTo: tomcat-dev@jakarta.apache.org
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm running tomcat 5.5.20 and I'm unable to retrieve Environment variables that
are defined in the DefaultContext. I know this isn't working because if I alter
the DefaultContext tag to a Context one and run the same webapp, the Environment
variables are retrieved successfully by the app.

This is a problem because multiple auto-deployed apps need to share the same
Environment variables. The only available workaround is to repeat the
Environment tags within explicit Context tags for each known webapp deployed in
the Host's appBase.

This has been tested in Linux using jdk 1.6 and in Windows using jdk 1.5.

since this alredy happened in 1.2.20 and it runs well on most platforms,

In your last problem report, I think I saw a stack trace from which we

Re: [VOTE] Releasing Tomcat Connectors 1.2.21

2007-03-01 Thread Eric Wertman
I'm just ringing in, although I don't have a vote. I was working with
Rainer on an issue with 1.2.21 on some Red Hat machines. I started with
mod_jk because those were the only error messages I was getting. It
turns out that those messages were not related to my ultimate problem.
Thanks again to Rainer for helping me track that down and sort it out.

My ultimate problem was that apache was returning bad data in some
requests, but logging 200 error code and the proper file sizes in the
access_log. The files themselves were of variable size and often
contained other "junk" that was obviously from apache memory space
(chunks of log entries and other things).

The theories I went though included targeting sendfile, mmap, and
mod_cache (mod_cache_mem) . I disabled all of these and still was
experiencing the problem.

Eventually I stopped it from happening by switching from mod_jk to
mod_proxy_ajp. I still have the other things enabled.

Since I'm not a developer I can't say exactly where that problem might
be. It does seem as though there is some problem there. I couldn't
reproduce it with ab... apache thinks everything is normal. It didn't
show up until I put the servers in production, and then it was only a
small percentage of overall requests. If I hadn't seen the b0rked
images and files through my browser I would not have known the problem
existed.

I'd be happy to help troubleshoot this if anyone wants to investigate
further.

Thanks;

Eric

The automatic option is when I access the webapp, Tomcat notes that

Re: reload on demand

2007-03-01 Thread Eric Wertman
WebSphere has this option on deployment, you can indicate that an app
should poll it's class files every so often to see if there are any
changes, and restart itself if it does.

It is a nice option to have, but I agree that I'd rather my computer
program not do anything I didn't ask of it.

The automatic option is when I access the webapp, Tomcat notes that
some class file in it has changed and reload the webapp.

TC 3.3.x has something like this. You could look at the DependClassLoader

see that the solution I gave you, doesn't need to reload the app, it
simply reloads the individual class file. for large apps, you don't have
to wait for the entire app to reload

that would qualify as automatic too, wouldnt it?

Tomcat correctly handles this situation and logs the message you see to tell you
what it has done. These messages are expected in the circumstances you describe.

This is indicative of an application issue. I have seen this when the request
processing gets into an infinite loop due to a coding error. The looping can
consume large amounts of CPU making Tomcat unresponsive.

I am marking this issue as fixed as per comment #1 since this is most
appropriate for the original issue.

Had the report in comment #5 been in a separate issue it would be resolved as
invalid.

Thanks. But it is still reload at a certain interval (for a specifed
servlet, not the webapp). What I'd like is to reload the whole
webapp when it is accessed.

Spec conflict between ServletResponse.getWriter() and ServletResponse.reset()

2007-03-01 Thread Mark Thomas
Looking into bug 37072 has identified a conflict in the spec.
http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=37072

Consider the following sequence of calls:

response.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8");
response.getWriter();
response.reset();

After this the writer encoding and response encoding do not agree and
can not be reconciled:
- the Writer is using UTF-8 because the reset only clears the buffer,
it doesn't reset the writer's encoding
- response.getCharacterEncoding returns ISO-8859-1 due to the reset
- response.setCharacterEncoding has no effect since the getWriter()
call sets the usingWriter flag that prevents changes to the character
encoding.

The spec is clear that:
- reset() clear all the headers
- calls setCharacterEncoding() have no effect after getWriter()

What isn't clear is should the call to reset() also clear the writer
(assuming of course that the response isn't committed)? Along the same
lines is getWriter(), reset(), getStream() be legal?

I am minded to clear the writer, buffer, stream and associated flags
on reset().

Thoughts?

Mark

Thanks. I've taken a look at it. Here are some issues with it:
1) It still uses a timer. So it will still keep reloading when I
am editing my files.
2) I have to specified which servlet classes to monitor. It seems
there is no way to monitor all classes (including domain classes).
3) Reloading only a particular class will probably break the
webapp (eg, when instances of classes hold references to its
instances).

JspC options

2007-03-01 Thread Steve Joynt

Hi,

Would it be possible/feasible to add finer control over the java compiler
used by JspC when compiling jsps?

The ant Javac task includes the "executable" parameter, which allows you to
specify the path to the javac executable. Can this be exposed through the
ant JspC task somehow? I'm not sure how this would be implemented for the
JDTCompiler.

Thanks,
Steve
