reload on demand

2007-02-28 Thread Kent Tong
Hi,

I've recently posted a request for a reload-on-demand feature
(http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.jakarta.tomcat.user/144699).
Wondering if you guys (Tomcat developers) think it's useful,
nice to have or just total crap? If it's not crap, I may try
to find some time to see if I am capable of implementing it.

Summary: POST data is not getting through to CGI-Script
   Product: Tomcat 5
   Version: 5.5.20
  Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
 Component: Servlets:CGI
AssignedTo: tomcat-dev@jakarta.apache.org
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I can't really believe that I am the first to stumble on this problem:

Contrary to Version 5.5.17 POST data does not reach the CGI script anymore. In
5.5.17 all parameters where put onto the command line, so POST parameter did
reach the script, albeit not on the way they were intended to reach it.

In 5.5.20 this piece of code has been eliminated; this should not matter,
because STDIN of the script receives req.getInputStream(), which should work
fine. But it doesn't. The problem is, that req.getInputStream() returns an empty
stream (although req.getContentLength() returns the correct value). Obviously
the InputStream has already been read and transformed into parameters, before
the request reaches the CGIServlet.

Am I really the only one with this problem? FYI: I do not use filters to
preprocess data; it is just a simple jsp-page which forwards POST data to a CGI
script.

Rémy,

thanks for fixing that issue. In my test I can see ~30% improvement in number
of concurrent sessions correctly served by single Tomcat instance. But still
it did not solved it completely.

My idea is, that if there are enough memory and IO resources, Tomcat will be
able to handle all the clients "equally". So if there are clients which
produce equal constant load they should be served all and with the same
average response times. Do you think that it is achievable?

The question is what should "equally" exactly mean. I know that in real
scenario there are various clients with different connections and injection
rates so just a simple FIFO rule would not be sufficient. Moreover, I am new
to Tomcat internals and at this point I have no idea of how it should work at
all.

But what about general idea of having some scheduler which will somehow
control thread execution? Is it good idea or something completely wrong?

Thanks for any comments,

Dominik

Sorry,

as soon as I had written and submitted this bug report, I realized, that we
indeed do some sort of preprocessing, although not by a filter; it's my own
fault, that req.getInputStream() is empty.

personally I don't see a very high value of it.
If I remember correctly, a different approach has already been
implemented using one more layer of classloaders.
you'd need to search around or someone might jump in and let you know

average response times. Do you think that it is achievable?

rates so just a simple FIFO rule would not be sufficient. Moreover, I am new
to Tomcat internals and at this point I have no idea of how it should work at
all.

But what about general idea of having some scheduler which will somehow
control thread execution? Is it good idea or something completely wrong?

there is no scheduler in tomcat, but the same logic has been implemented.
For example, connections are simply handled in the order they are
accepted, for the blocking connector.
On the regular connector, the notion of a scheduler is obsolete since
you will never have more connections than you have threads,
so its up to the operating system's scheduler to determine how threads
are swapped onto the CPU.

For the Tomcat APR connector, the same as above, when a socket is
accepted, the acceptor blocks until a thread is available to process the
request.
For keep alive connections, when invoking the poll() events, the
connections will be handled in that exact order.

The APR poller blocks for an available worker thread.

The Tomcat 6 NIO connector works a little bit differently. Upon
accepting a connection, the NIO acceptor doesn't block for an available
worker thread,
instead it registers it with the poller. The idea behind this is, when a
socket is accepted, doesn't mean there is data to be read, hence no need
to block a thread.
Also, the NIO poller never blocks, if there is a socket ready for read,
but no worker threads are available, the poller simply processes other
events, and when

a thread is available, the socket gets handed off at that time.

So in these three scenarios, the only implementation that doesn't follow
a strict first-come-first-serve scenario is the NIO implementation.

in a recent test, with 12k concurrent connections, it seems that the
equality is very good, example results below.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Accepted meaning of 'should' in spec documents

2007-02-28 Thread C. Halstead
Hi,

Just a quick clarification question, and sorry if it's a basic one. When
interpreting various spec documents is the qualifier 'should' always taken to
indicate that something is optional?

Two cases in point:

Bug 41718 was marked as an enhancement request with the explanation of "should
== optional"

Bug 41722 pertains to a web.xml element that is referred to in the spec once
with (emphasis mine) "A security-role-ref element *should* contain a role-link
sub-element..." and then later with "...an optional link to a security
role(role-link)."

I'm just trying to understand the standards applied when interpreting the spec.

Thanks,

Tagging JK 1.2.21

2007-02-28 Thread Rainer Jung

Hi all,

the feedback from community quality testing for mod_jk 1.2.21 seems to
be OK. Several people did download it on the first day, and we fixed a
minor bug. If things stay like this, I would like to tag and cast the
release vote late Saturday, so that we will most likely have the final
release at the middle of next week.

I'm travelin at the moment, otherwise I would have suggested to tag even
earlier. Anyone planning to apply important changes to trunk before
saturday, please show up now :)

Regards,

Rainer

That is very slow... I have a day off tomorrow.
If no one complains I will tag tomorrow morning (GMT+1) prepare the
tarball and produce and test the binaries (Linux, Solaris, HPUX,

Congrats to you all! This is the first release of Tomcat that I've
closely followed from the beginning - both in the dev list and by building
it locally and running it and testing certain areas - and I'm very
impressed by your teamwork and professionalism.

Re: [ANN] Apache Tomcat 6.0.10 released

2007-02-28 Thread William L. Thomson Jr.
Great job all, been waiting so long for this, about wet my pants :)

But really my way of saying thanks is by making Tomcat 6.0.10 (release)
available on Gentoo. Ebuild was just committed to tree, should hit
mirrors and be available for sync ~4hrs or so.

So long as no major bugs are filed, will be stable on Gentoo in ruffly
30 days. It's been pretty solid so far, so likely any bugs would be
Gentoo specific, and likely my fault :)

Otherwise thanks again and congrats.

Is that classloader included in Tomcat?

There's reloadable as a Context attribute, documented at
http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-5.5-doc/config/context.html, and you
can also define a list of static resources (not classes) to be watched
to trigger a reload, via the WatchedResources element. See the page
above and the default Context.xml that ships with Tomcat for an
example.

Yes, I know about the reloadable flag. But what I'd like is to
reload it only when the webapp is accessed again. I don't
want it to keep reloading when I make changes to my Java
files. Only when I am ready to test run it, would I like it
to reload automatically.

Specifying relative path for TOMCAT 5.5 ?

2007-02-28 Thread Rajendra Sakpal

Hi,

I am using TOMCAT 5.5. I am creating a file in class that is called from a
JSP. However, the relative path that I have specified in the class doesn't
seem to work. The path that I have used is
:"/webapps/Jonathon/WEB-INF/etc/subscriber.txt".

Can someone please let me know, what is wrong with the relative path ?

thanks in advance,
Rajendra
