Form based + Basic Authentication

2005-10-16 Thread Jess Holle
Does anyone have any pointers as to how one can achieve form-based
authentication with an "out" for basic authentication?

Essentially given programmatic clients that expect a protocol level
authentication mechanism like HTTP Basic and human clients that are more
comfortable with form based authentication, the desire would be to have
each URL do form based authentication except where the user-agent or
headers suggest thatt basic authentication is more appropriate. After
initial login cookie-based behavior is acceptable in either case. What
is not realistic, however, is to expect every programmatic client to
know about form based login, which is, after all, an ad hoc
application-level convention (albeit formalized in the servlet spec)
rather than a protocol-handler-level standard.

What I'm looking for is pointers to do this in a way that will be
portable across all servlet 2.4 and higher servlet engines.

Somewhat separately we may end up with our own custom realm (or
realm-like object) at least in cases where we can get a hold of this
layer as only being able to check a single LDAP is not a realistic
constraint these days. [Tomcat's JNDI realm allow you to provide an
alternate URL when the first URL is unreachable, but what's needed is a
list of URLs where the first containing data for a given user id wins.
One could/should constrain the URLs to not contain overlapping user id
sets, of course.]

Re: Form based + Basic Authentication

2005-10-16 Thread Jess Holle
P.S. If none of this is possible in any quasi-portable manner, I'd still
be interested in how to do it just for Tomcat 5.5.x.

First, a DataSourceRealm works for me just fine with no connection leaks in both
5.5.9 and 5.5.12, across multiple application redeploys and restarts. Second,
if you look at the DataSourceRealm code, you will see it does not hold on to
connections anyways.

If you can reproduce this reliably on 5.5.12, please reopen this issue and
provide a WAR we can use to reproduce this ourselves. Thanks.

You're right, it IS a combination of WinZip stupidity and odd user behavior. We
recommend Windows users use the .zip distribution: that's why it's there ;)

That said, I've added a placeholder file in the temp directly to the binary
distributions. It does not contain the same text as Tomcat 4.1 as that text is
no longer accurate.

Subject: [PATCH] Catalina CGIServlet broken redirects

Hello,

The Catalina CGIServlet (as of tomcat 5.0.28) does not have a special case for
handling "Status" headers set by a cgi script. When a script tries to issue a
redirect, tomcat returns inconsistent headers:

  HTTP/1.x 200 OK
  Status: 300 Moved

This behaviour breaks the redirect. Attached is a patch which adds a special
case for Status headers to

  catalina/src/share/org/apache/catalina/servlets/CGIServlet.java

The patch was written against the tomcat 5.0.28 sources.

Cheers,

Patrick May

Recent Tomcat versions have used the updated JMX jars so this leak has been gone
for a while. The workaround of disabling the request registration is also
available, documented, and effective.

We don't know if/when the next 5.0 release will happen.

It would be much better to re-work the patch to use the smap files, instead
of holding the entire JSP page in memory. Since it only kills off
development servers, I guess I'm ok with it as is :).

RE: compiling Jakarta Redirector dll on x64 Windows

2005-10-16 Thread Tim Whittington
I'm assuming you're referring to EM64T/AMD64 here - IA64 is the Itanium 2
architecture.

You basically need the Platform SDK + the Microsoft C++ Compiler - any Visual
Studio will give you both of these things (+ a nice IDE).

For Windows/x86 you can use a recent Platform SDK (free download from MS) and
the Microsoft Visual C++ Toolkit 2003 (also free) or VS 6/.Net 2000/.Net 2003.
The Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition beta also works (you still need the
Platform SDK).

VC2005 EE looks like your only bet unless you've got access to an x86_64 Visual
Studio - it's not clear from the download page though whether it will run/build
on 64bit Windows.

Subject: compiling Jakarta Redirector dll on x64 Windows

Hi guys,

I've got a Windows 2003 Server x64 edition, running on x64 Intel CPU.
It turns out that isapi_redirector.dll is not compiled against this platform.
Regular 32-bit version of the dll doesn't work with 64-bit IIS and AMD64 build
that I was able to
find doesn't run on Intel.
Now I was wondering if anyone had a chance to compile the mentioned dll on the
Intel 64 under
Windows?
Or if not I might try doing it myself, but I'll need your help guys.
Since I'm Java developer I'm not really familiar with Visual Studio (I've seen
in sources there is a
VS project there for the dll).
As far as I understand one has to run Visual Studio on the IA64 machine to get
it compiled right?
In other words it's not possible to compile it on regular 32-bit windows to get
Intel 64-bit code,
correct?
Now, which VS will I need? 6? 2003 .NET? 2005? I've seen Platform SDK was
mentioned in few places.
Would I need that as well?
I'd appreciate some step-by-step instructions on what to do to get it compiled
under IA64 Windows
Server 2003.

Thanks!
