Breaking my silance

2019-07-24 Thread Raphael Bircher
Hi all

After nearly two years, I break my silence. I was focusing on my own
project. We established a NGO in Switzerland with two goals. First to
develop end run tools for communication and organization vor other
NGO's. second, to find, educate and train new developers. We focus on
people who fail in the standard education system.

Participate in a OSS Project will be a part of our training program. I
find it important to work on a international project. I will guide the
people when they start at the community. Even the swiss social
assurance (IV (Invaliden Versicherung) accepted a pilot project with
us. This is very surprising, because the IV is normally very
conservative and not open for new concepts.

At the moment we have five peoples in the organization. Two of them go
slowly ready to work in a project. The NGO is called Vefko and is
limited to Switzerland ad the moment.

I will be also at the ApacheCon EU. I'm really happy to be there, and
can't wait to meet you guys there!

Hi all

I don't get any feedback from you. I'm a little bit unsure, if I
should continue the blog series, or not. I know the most of you are no
German speakers, so I don't expected much feedback. But I would be
happy to have at least some Feedback if you like it, or not.

Next blogs will be about the Apache Way. probably something like "Ohne

Corona Track App

2020-04-05 Thread Raphael Bircher
Hi all

I think we all are right now in a challenging situation. Many
countries are in a lockdown. But there is also a discussion around,
what we do after this emergency stop. One solution ist to track down
the rout of the Virus. If a new case comes in, you search out the
social connections. Thy can be warned, and make a test to.

I know, tracking Apps are already in discussion, but maybe it's a good
idea to have something open source under AL v2.

I know, Apache normally don't act proactive. But maybe we should make
an exception here. What do you think?

Re: Corona Track App

2020-04-06 Thread Raphael Bircher
Hi all

If you take a look at my (really short) concept, you will see, that I
have a slightly different approach. Instead of a centralized tool. I
think a decentralized with the possibility of some centralized data
(if necessary) is the better way.

On one way I expect a higher tolerance by the population, on the other
hand you are not depending on a large server Infrastructure.

Re: What's the plan? What are we here for?

2016-12-05 Thread Raphael Bircher

Hi at all

I'm finaly here too. I think, moast of you know me ;-) But the way to
this list wasn't so easy. I'm honest, i diden't know about comdev util
Roman point me to the ML. Then I searched for the subscribe link, and
faild. Well I know how to compose the subscribe adress for the ML, but
what does a newbie. So it would be good, to have that link on a
prominent place on the comdev site.

Befor we start to get other in to the boat, we should look around and
see, wich type of boat we have. What's the magic of Apache, why we
particip, what's the spirit. It's important for Newbie that they know
what they can expect. Maybe we can start with this work.

Am 12/5/2016 um 6:54 PM schrieb Rich Bowen:

As has been discussed elsewhere, we don't have a clear idea of what
we're here for. I believe we need to fix that.

Why This Matters

1) So that we know how to ask for help

This matters because people *flock* to us saying "I want to help", and
in pretty much every case our response is "Great! Help! We love you!"
This is great, but utterly unhelpful.

Once we have a clear idea of what goals we are working towards, we will
have a better idea of how to tell people to help us.

When people come to volunteer to help, we need to know what to tell them
that they can do, and those things need to come out of an understanding
of what we're trying to accomplish.

At the moment, we're doing a number of things. Most of them, we have no
idea whether they help. I assert that this is primarily because "help"
is undefined. Help with *what*?

2) So that we know whether we're doing it

Once we define what it is that we are trying to accomplish, we will be
better able to measure the things that we are doing, to determine in
some objective way whether they are moving us towards those goals.

I realize that "community development" is an endless road. But we should
at least know which direction we're walking on that road.

3) Because we owe the board a report every quarter

We're supposed to report to the board every quarter telling them how we
are doing on achieving the goals that they created us to pursue. Except
that we don't know what those goals are.

So, we engage in various efforts which may or may not do anything. Some,
like GSoC, are noble, and clearly benefit one audience (the students
that participate), and *might* benefit projects. Sounds like it does,
based on the most recent responses on $otherthread. Awesome. But do they
advance "community development". Hard to say before we define that.

So, What's The Plan

As a full-time community manager, I have a definition of community
development that appears on my annual performance review. I think it's
fine for us, as a PMC in the most important open source organization on
the planet, to have a similar level of rigor.

Here's some of the things that fall under this header, and which I
believe should be part of our definition as the ComDev PMC - things that
we should work towards, and measure every effort against.

* Increase community diversity. Identify projects that are monocultures
(or near to them) and help them actively pursue broader community diversity.

* Develop tools (documentation, training materials, and software tools)
that projects can use to promote themselves and attract new
participants. (Participants is a very broad term here, and does not
refer only to code jockeys.)

* Educate projects on the Apache Way, so that they can more richly
experience the organization that they have attached themselves to.
Identify projects that appear to be operating outside of the Apache Way,
and gently, kindly, lead them back to the light.

* Strengthen the bonds between projects and the larger Foundation.
Defining this is a whole other thread, but means several things to me.
Identify projects that are satellites and build ties back to the
"family", in terms of participating in events, participating in
governance discussions, having adequate membership representation on the
PMC, and so on.

* It's not about marketing, but we should be working very closely with
marketing (press@) to promote what our projects are doing, and promote
the idea of the ASF as a place where innovation happens, thus drawing in
an engaged and excited participant community.

* Internal promotion and cheerleading. Marketing is outward facing.
Community development is somewhat inward facing. Many of our projects
have no idea what other projects are doing, and don't care. Doing a
degree of internal cheerleading, along with the education, is critical
for building exprit de corps.

Ok, I think there's more, but that alone should keep us busy for 5 or 10
years, and give these volunteers that keep showing up a clearer idea of
what things they can work on.

I know of one documented case,

don't have info on how well it went.

The disclaimer was important to properly dissociate such initiatives
form the ASF, which does not fund software development.

Thanks for the link. This rise a question, i got never a real answer for
it. Why ASF dosen't found Developers?. Some people say, because to
non-profit status. Others say, this are our rules. But what are the
reasons behind. It would be nice, if someone take the time to explain this.

OpenExpo in Madrid

Hi all

I do this for Sharan now, I hope you don't mind ;-)

At FOSDEM Mr. Philippe Lardy invited the Apache People to the OpenExpo in

but there are English tracks too.

A quick look to the website looks promising. For more informations go to

Let's go Facebook

2017-03-05 Thread Raphael Bircher

Hi all

I discovered some time ago, that the Apache Software Foundation has a
automated generated Facebook site with over 9000 likes. For those who
don't know it, FB generate a page for highly requested sits. There is a
text from Wikipedia on it, the Logo and that's it. We can take over this
page with the 9000 fans on it, and make a real fan page.

I've talked about this topic with Sally. She said, that I should go ahead
and do it. I have some years experience with FB pages. I'm one of the
Administrators of the Apache OpenOffice page. So I propose the following
procedure.

If there are no concerns, I will care about getting the page setup. After
that I can add others to Admin ore Moderator list.

I ask also for help here. Who is willing to maintain a Facebook page? FB
can also be a good opportunity to get new people involved. At OpenOffice
we have had committer who started with a simple Question on the FB Page.

So what you think about it?

Hi all

I decided that 2017 is my last Season as disabled sportman. But on the
last season I like to give a last time 100%++. That's the reason, why i
put sport in the height est priority. This means, That I will not attend
any event from ASF during the Summer. So I will be not at the ApacheCon
NA. I want to try the impossible one last time.

But the rest of the Work at ASF will not be affected.

You are not a committer right now, right? The Apache ID/e-mail and the
right to commit is bound to the committer role. So there is no way to
create it yourself. If you want to submit a patch, simply write a mail to
the dev list on the project and add the patch or create a issue with the
patch inside. Don't forget to write what the patch does. The patch well
then be reviewed by the committers and committed in your name.

If you do value work, you will get voted in as committer and you can do it
your self. Please read also the License site
https://www.apache.org/licenses/ .

If you have questions, just asd! I wish you a good start at the ASF and

Re: MSDN Subscription for Apache Committers

2017-03-29 Thread Raphael Bircher

Hi Luciano, *

Can we really expect that? I don't think. The subscription we get costs a
load of money per year for normal people out there. We have to be lucky
for such an offer. I think, Microsoft don't like to support a inactive
committer, who save a load of money and work anymore for the ASF. So I
understand, that they only give the subscribtion for a year. So I think we
should be thankful for this.

I was also profiting two years from the MSDN Subscription, even the main
work was for Apache OpenOffice!

Also MS is one of the longest standing Platium sponsor from the ASF (or
the longest)

Re: Contribute as a company

2017-04-18 Thread Raphael Bircher

Hi William

Apache don't have a special way to contribute from a Company. We look at
all contributors as an individual. Your employee just follow up like every
other individual. Whoever, there are some contracts. ICLA and probably
also CCLA. On https://www.apache.org/licenses/#clas you can find them.

If you have already existing Code (say you extended an existing Apache
Project but didn't contribute back) you may need a SGA (Grant) to hand
over the code properly.

The way the contribution happened varies from project to project. But if
your employees jump into the dev mailing list from the project, they will
be guided to the right place.

If you have more questions, just ask. I wish you a good start at Apache
and welcome on the Apache village (for a family we are a bit to big)

Trouble child OpenOffice

2017-04-19 Thread Raphael Bircher

Hi people

I want to raise a question here. I know, we have to solve our problems our
self, but maybe here are people with ideas. OpenOffice has a big community
problem. The community was simply melted away in the last year. We have at
the moment no Company who offer devs. And the rest of the community fights
the absolutely urgent issues. There was already a discussion about
retirement, it was refused. But this doesn't mean we are out of the danger
zone.

The sweet part of this story is our user base. We have 100'000 Downloads
EVERY single DAY. I mean, this is crazy. We have really loyal users. We
get also frequently messages from user who just want to say "thank you".

The sad thing about this is, they have actually no chance to do something
for the program. They are looked out. Remember, they are normal users,
they are no developers. They are typically private users or small
companies. But imagine what happened if only a small part of our users pay
20$.

We really need devs and we need skilled one, because OpenOffice is
challenging for programmers. Companies with a load of money has a easy way
to influence an Apache project. Simply pay a developer, that's it. But
people without big pocket are simply looked out. (if they have no
programmer skills) That's not fair!

How to solve this problem? Thanks a load.

Hi Toki

It's interesting how you jump in every time we talk about trouble at
OpenOffice. I know, that you and some LibreOffice guys want to see Apache
OpenOffice dead. If we are so bad, you should better ask your self, why
you don't manage to take over the Apache OpenOffice users in all this
years. Why LibreOffice lose users like the City of Munich. I'm sure you
have answares, but I'm also sure that you will see the problem all outside
LibreOffice. LibreOffice also lose a load of traction. Now days you have
only 1/5 of the activity on the dev ML as you have in good times. You also
lost payed devs in the past. At the moment you are in better condition,
yes. But it doesn't give you the right to spread FUD over Apache
OpenOffice. Thanks!

* is OpenOffice not competitive any more compared to Google Docs and

It would be more accurate to say that LibreOffice has picked up the
goodwill, and cachet that OpenOffice.org had.

* are the download numbers correct?

Between 2015-10-01 and 2016-06-30 there were 29,137,880 downloads of
Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2
Between 2017-01-01 and 2017-04-19 there were 10,748,967 downloads of
Apache OpenOffice 4.1.3

In as much as these figures are from SourceForge, they probably are
reasonably accurate. The big unknown is how many of these are "failed
downloads".

OTOH, things like the number of downloads from Cuba, San Marino, Monaco,
and The Holy See, imply that there is an issue with either failed
downloads, or accurate geolocation, or accurately counting of the
downloads.

* do you have an idea about the acceptance of OpenOffice in the wide
world (marketing. press and so on)?

resources.

The challenge that is unique to OpenOffice as you are well aware is
the fact that

That's not unique to OO. There are other projects that are a product
too. Tomcat, ServiceMix, Archiva are examples.

I see other challenges and opportunities (depending on how one looks at
the glass). For instance the fact that both MS and Google, major
competitors, have a cloud service offering.

At the ApacheCon Europe in Sinsheeim an employee from IBM have had a talk
about experiments for a Online version. It was interesting how crowded it
gets. Unfortunately it was not continued. An other frequent request is a
Version for IPad.

Just some ideas.

Talk about Apache at Linux Day in Dornbirn

2017-09-15 Thread Raphael Bircher

Hi all

I plane to go to the Linux Day in Dornbirn. This is a small Event on the 3
contry border. Austria, Germany and Switzerland. I think i can also do a
Talk about the ASF. I have two topics in mind. "Apache is more then httpd"
or about the Apache Way.

The main People at the Linux day are private users and enthusiasts. I
recognize, that many of this people are not aware about the size of the
ASF. So I want to bring them the ASF a bit closer.

The presentation will be in German. Befor I sing up for the CFP I want to
notify the ComDev and ask for any objections.

Thanks for the offer of help and will keep it in mind. Jacques, Herve
and Narcisse are currently working with me offline on the French
details for the conference.

If we're doing some comdev work regionally, would it make sense to
start creating regional comdev mailing lists as a need arises? (for
example d...@community.apache.org for the combined German speaking
parts of Europe) For the solutions.hamburg Apache we spent a lot of
time off-list too, because the 100+ mails about details would've been
a burden for the many comdev subscribers who weren't involved.

The result wasn't bad, but:
A.) We might have gotten more Germans involved if there had been a
base of Germans subscribed "listening in" on the list. Especially
when it came to putting together a German translation of the Apache
brochure.
B.) None of that communication is now archived or visible for
individuals or tools.

I know that YAL (yet another list) can be annoying; and it won't work
if nobody's interested enough to subscribe. Since the regional
approach to community building is so much more cost effective, it
seems to me to be the way of the future for Apache, and this might
help support the approach. Other opinions?

I'm very interested in such a group, even we have to keep a eye that we
don't split the community. But I think, regional Group are a good way to
get people in. I see often the problem that peoples have no idea how big
Apache is and how many projects we have.

Planed contribution from Vefko

2024-04-18 Thread Raphael Bircher
Hi All
Since about seven year I work at the Vefko project, a NGO based in
Switzerland. One of our main goal is to train disabled people in IT and
programming to geve them better opportunities as employees.

Now we have our first "IV Eingliederungsmassnahme" (Dont know how to call
it in English). The Invaliedenversicherung (which is a government backed
assurance for disabled people) pay our organisation to get a person
reintegrated into the business world.

We will work with this people at the Apache Community, so they can gain
experience in programming and learn to work independently.

I think, the calendar would be a good start for this person.

If you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them.

Regards,
Raphael
