2023-12-15 Thread Jun Liu
I’m glad to see this discussion has drawn so much attention from the community.
I will give a brief summary of the thread and send it here later. It would be
something based both on my open source life experience in Hangzhou and the
information we got from this thread, mainly about the active members, projects
that would like to be part of ALC Hangzhou.

Jun Liu

| Subject | [ALC] Request to establish ALC in Hangzhou, China |
Hi, there
I am writing this mail to launch a discussion of starting an ALC chapter in
Hangzhou, China. This idea came to my mind when I was in Beijing attending the
Community Over Code Asia 2023 conference this September. I talked to a couple
of ASF Members, PMCs, and Committers from different projects about this idea
and got many positive feedbacks.

Hangzhou is one of several cities in China with a considerable amount of
developers, the headquarters of many world leading tech companies. And most
importantly, many ASF projects and their main contributors or members are from
Hangzhou. As far as I know, projects like Apache RocketMQ, Apache Dubbo were
originally born in Hangzhou, Apache Flink and Apache Seata (incubating) have
most of their active contributors in Hangzhou. An ALC chapter here would
provide a platform for those ASF projects and active contributors to build and
foster a community. A community can also help to incubating more projects since
Hangzhou is never lack of innovations and great ideas.

I read this new chapter guide[1] laterly and am confident Hangzhou can meet the
basic requirements (also, I would like to help collect those active ASF members
and active contributors in Hangzhou later if necessary). Would be happy to hear
your comments on this idea, thanks.

Re: ASF booth at OpenSource Experience Paris

2023-12-15 Thread Ryan Skraba
Hey all, I just wanted to report back to the community about this event.

I was only there for one of the two days. There were about 5 of us,
which was satisfying because some of us could stay at the table while
others visited the expo or met with others during the day.

For an "Open Source Experience", it's a bit surprising how many
attendees were only peripherally aware of the Foundation (although the
HTTP server had pretty good recognition). There were many students,
but this year there were also quite a few people in "reconversion" --
in the process of changing their career towards software and tech.
People are generally interested in contributing, especially to grow
their experience. Free stickers are a really nice way to talk about
how wildly different the software projects are and some of the common
ground that the ASF provides between them in terms of tools and
governance.

Most of the questions we had were around first-time contributions, and
how *my* employer earns money from open source (once it was clear that
the ASF is not my employer). For the attendees that were familiar
with the ASF, I pushed the Community over Code Europe 2024
conference[1], with some pretty positive feedback!

Thanks so much to Olivier, Hervé, JBO, Ismael for being there!

Ryan
