Re: [VOTE] Branching Change for 4.0 Freeze

2018-07-12 Thread Gary Dusbabek

I'm not interested in sparking a discussion on this, because a) it has
already happened and b) it seems I am in a minority. But thought I should
at least include the rationale for my vote:
* This proposal goes against the "scratch an itch" philosophy of making
contributions to an Apache project and IMO will discourage contributions
that are casual or new.
* It feels dictatorial. IMO the right way to do this would be for
impassioned committers to -1 any patch that goes against elements a, b, or
c of what this vote is for.

Gary.

Re: [Discuss] Accept GoCQL driver donation

2018-08-31 Thread Gary Dusbabek
It would also make sense to think about how existing maintainers are
brought in as committers, if appropriate (official vote, etc.). I'm under
the impression that Apache commit bits are granted in a binary fashion -
you have access to everything or nothing. <-- Is this incorrect?

At what point is the project comfortable/trusting with granting commit bits
to someone who is very familiar with a facet of the project (say, a go
client, or dtests), but hasn't made substantial contributions to the core
project? I think I'd be fine with it, but I'm curious what others think.

Gary.

NGCC Proposal (Was Re: NGCC?)

2017-06-12 Thread Gary Dusbabek
## Cassandra list email

Hi everybody,

Here are current thoughts about structure and timing. Your feedback is
welcome.

Date: One of 18, 19, or 22 September 2017. We are aware the Tokyo user
group is planning an event the first week in October. We’re doing our best
to give a buffer there.

Venue: After evaluating a few options in San Antonio, the event space at
Geekdom seems like a good fit and the right balance of cost and services (
goo.gl/tViC72).

Format: This will be a one day event, starting in the morning and running
through the evening. Here is a proposed agenda we can iterate on:

* 8-9am - catered breakfast, conversation
* 9-12 - presentations, including a coffee/snack break
* 12-1:30pm - catered lunch
* 1:30-4:00pm - presentations, including a coffee/snack break
* 4-5pm - lightning talks
* 5-6:30pm - happy hour and a half
* 6:30-9:30pm - dinner at a local restaurant

We hope to film the presentations and make them available on Youtube.

A few have already reached out offering various resources or assistance.
Thank you! Eric or I will be reaching out to coordinate as soon as we are
ready to finalize plans.

Please chime in if you have suggestions, especially those relating to
format.

Cheers,

Gary

Re: NGCC Proposal (Was Re: NGCC?)

2017-06-13 Thread Gary Dusbabek
I don't see any problem if a cadre of organizers want to put something
together in Europe. All it takes is someone (or group) to coordinate
things. Go for it.

One of the main points of this kind of event is to physically collocate
with other devs, so remote participation isn't something that we've looked
into.

Cheers,

Gary.

NGCC 2017 Announcement

2017-08-01 Thread Gary Dusbabek
We are pleased to announce the 2017 Next Generation Cassandra Conference
(NGCC) that will be held on Tuesday September 26th at the Geekdom Event
Center in San Antonio, Texas. This one day conference is targed toward
Apache Cassandra developers and large-scale cluster operators, but is
opened to anyone interested in the Cassandra community.

Presentation topics will cover the current state of project development as
well as future development. The organizers have alotted a number of opened
slots for presentations. So, if you would like to participate by giving a
presentation, please complete this questionnaire [1]. Presentations will be
selected by a committee formed from the Apache Cassandra PMC.

For more information, or to register, please go to our Eventbrite page[2],
where you can find a schedule of events as well as accomodation information.

If you have any questions, please reach out to myself or Eric Evans (
john.eric.ev...@gmail.com).

A special thanks to Instaclustr, who are sponsoring this event.

Thanks,

Gary.

Please Note: Apache Cassandra is a trademark of the Apache Software
Organization, which has neither endorsed or organized this event.

Re: NGCC 2017 Announcement

2017-08-14 Thread Gary Dusbabek
Hi everybody! It was pointed out that we did not establish clear deadlines
for CFP submissions to NGCC. We'd like to have all responses in by August
19 (end of this week). That will give members of the PMC a few days to
consider them before making final decisions on or about the 26th of August.

So if you have a burning desire to help shape the direction of this project
and something concrete to say about it, this is your chance!

Thanks,

Gary

2017-10-30 Thread Gary Dusbabek
Sorry. We had an equipment failure, the sad results of which are that
videos will not be published. We'll look into better recording options for
the next NGCC.

Cheers,

Gary.

Re: Why isn't there a separate JVM per table?

2018-02-22 Thread Gary Dusbabek
I've given it some thought in the past. In the end, I usually talk myself
out of it because I think it increases the surface area for failure. That
is, managing N processes is more difficult that managing one process. But
if the additional failure modes are addressed, there are some interesting
possibilities.

For example, having gossip in its own process would decrease the odds that
a node is marked dead because STW GC is happening in the storage JVM. On
the flipside, you'd need checks to make sure that the gossip process can
recognize when the storage process has died vs just running a long GC.

I don't know that I'd go so far as to have separate processes for
keyspaces, etc.

There is probably some interesting work that could be done to support the
orgs who run multiple cassandra instances on the same node (multiple
gossipers in that case is at least a little wasteful).

I've also played around with using domain sockets for IPC inside of
cassandra. I never ran a proper benchmark, but there were some throughput
advantages to this approach.

Cheers,

Gary.

Re: Configuration of network connectors

2013-07-09 Thread Gary Dusbabek
You'd still end up needing to fork tests because of the singleton problem.
(Google that one.)

I say this without trying, but it shouldn't be terribly hard for you to
code up some fixture classes that allow you to test the storage layer, so
long as you can tolerate each test running in a forked VM. Same goes for
the ports, with the exception of JMX iirc.

Gary.
