Temporarily remove chambers search plugin [Checked into beta: Comment 3]

As the next release is only days away, there won't be time to fix and
get approval for the change.

Title:
  Firefox Search Engine is Broken

Status in The Mozilla Firefox Browser:
  In Progress
Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Firefox (package: firefox 17.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.12.10.1) has several
search engines pre-installed. One is labelled "Chambers (UK)". This
  search link is broken:

When, for example, putting in the search term "Test", then Firefox
  goes to the following URL

www.chambersharrap.co.uk/chambers/chref/chref.py/main?query=Test&title=21st&sourceid
  =Mozilla-search

This results in the display of an error page ("HTTP Error 404 - File
  or directory not found").

This error has been persistent for the past four weeks, suggesting a
  fundamentally broken search link.

Fix chambers search plugin

I will also need to find the correct person at Chambers (UK) to confirm
they are happy this is correct and Mozilla can use the search engine.

Depends what the en-GB user base is, I have no visibility of those
figures, or how many people have been using the chambers' searchplugin
(historically / currently).

en-GB is not offered automatically from IE or any other browser with
OS/browser both being en-GB locale, so, if a user wants to switch from
the shipped default, they get given Firefox en-US unless they know to
click on "Systems & Languages". This will probably reduce the user base
but not sure by how much.

Linux distributions do ship localised versions so, if the user updates
the distribution, they do get the correct localised update.

Not sure what happens with Windows/OS X for en-GB on the release
channel, but will see for Windows after next release.

The link in the article gives some working searchplugins:
http://mycroft.mozdev.org/search-engines.html?name=chambers
Should one of those be used? Is there a history available?

I'd like to try and find out what contacts we have on both sides, as I guess
there have been changes since the original plugin was created - would there
have even been any sort of agreement and, if so, where/who would have had
copies?

I don't believe anything landed in time for FF18, so FF18 had the 404,
at the moment FF19 will have no Chambers search plugin.

Bug description:
Firefox (package: firefox 17.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.12.10.1) has several
search engines pre-installed. One is labelled "Chambers (UK)". This
  search link is broken:

When, for example, putting in the search term "Test", then Firefox
  goes to the following URL

www.chambersharrap.co.uk/chambers/chref/chref.py/main?query=Test&title=21st&sourceid
  =Mozilla-search

This results in the display of an error page ("HTTP Error 404 - File
  or directory not found").

This error has been persistent for the past four weeks, suggesting a
  fundamentally broken search link.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 732572]

2012-01-15 Thread Iann-bugzilla
(In reply to Chris Coulson from comment #45)
> Which sounds don't work? And in Thunderbird or Firefox? The error you're
> getting actually comes from GTK when it loads the required GTK modules at
> initialization (as specified on the xsettings manager window), long before
> we do anything else with sound.

On both Thunderbird and SeaMonkey I get the Gtk-Message, but not on Firefox.
As far as I can tell:
Firefox works for both .play and .playEventSound
Thunderbird and SeaMonkey silently fail for .playEventSound and give for .play
the following message in the error console:
Timestamp: 15/01/12 21:08:23
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code:
0x80040111 (NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE) [nsISound.play]" nsresult: "0x80040111
(NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE)"  location: "JS frame ::
javascript:%20Components.classes["@mozilla.org/sound;1"].createInstance(Components.interfaces.nsISound).play(Components.classes["@mozilla.org/network/io-service;1"].getService(Components.interfaces.nsIIOService2).newURI("file:///usr/share/sounds/pop.wav",null,null))
 ::  :: line 1"  data: no]

So it seems that comm-central based projects are maybe not initialising
something that Firefox is...

I've built SeaMonkey, Thunderbird and SeaMonkey from the same source
tree.

Get exactly the same error from using
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/nightly/latest-comm-
central/thunderbird-12.0a1.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2

Perhaps it is some sort of distro issue then, I have a Fedora 14 x86_64 system
which I have tried it against and that doesn't give any error.
The Fedora 14 system has libcanberra-0.25-4 installed vs on Fedora 16
libcanberra-0.28-3
