system lockup
Hello, I am running a debian linux system 1.3.1 (Linux version 2.0.30) as a dedicated quake server. From time to time, the machine locks up completely, requiring a power cycle reset. I've checked the syslog for potential errors, but find nothing. However, i'm getting a lot of the following type messages (see below), which i dont understand. Could these be the problem? Problems with VIA serial ATA RAID Driver
When I try to install Debian, it says that it can't find my hard drive. I have a Maxtor 7 Y250M0 SCSI Disk Device (233 GB) that I have splitted in two pieces. I had the same problem with WinXP but I fixed it by giving the SATA Driver Disk. The problem is I can't use the disk with Debian because it only supports Windows. Can somebody help me with this problem? I want Debian on my computer! By the way, I'm going to keep WinXP on so called C and install Debian on so called D. _ Don't just search. Find. GNUstep still kicking?
I've recently come back to Debian after several years of disappointing work on other platforms (mainly Mac). In the past, I had used Windowmaker as my window manager and a few GNUstep apps (GNUmail, mainly). Is GNUstep still a useful platform; is it popular? I see that there have been some recent releases of the API tools, but sometimes it's difficult to tell how pervasive a platform is. "Actively developed" can sometimes mean that three hackers continue to work on something that everyone else has abandoned :D I no longer have time to spend hours tweaking config files, and thus prefer an integrated desktop environment, but GNOME and KDE are too bulky for my PIII-650 / 320MB workstation. I've not tried XFCE yet, but hear good things. I really do enjoy the NeXT/OPEN/AFTER/step environment, but don't want to get reacquainted with something that's dying a slow death :( Thanks for any tips --maestro
Re: windowmaker
Since my post, I have installed gnustep and windowmaker and am loving it. It's snappy, fast, and lightweight. I'm also partial to the vertical taskbar setup which WMaker seems to favor. GNUMail.app is actually a pretty slick email client, and it of course is perfectly integrated with GNUstep. If you're using GDM as your login manager, you should be able to select WMaker from the "Session" menu. Good luck!
grisbi
In trying to reacquaint myself with Debian (and gnu/linux in general), I'm trying to find a decent personal accounting application. I used to use GnuCash, but it looks like they're still using the old GTK 1.x tools (although a 2.x port is underway). I stumbled upon Grisbi, and it looks very promising. Has anyone experience using this in Debian? Pros/cons? Using another accounting tool that you like even better? Thanks to all. --maestro
