linux unformat
HI Could you tell me if is it possible to recover a NT disk formated with linux? I had a 6Gb disk with 3 partitions (2GB for NT, 2 Gb for win95 and 2Gb free) and i tried to install the RedHat Linux on the free disk space. I choose the linux server custom instalation and it formated all the disk with linux file system. Is it possible to recover those NT and win95 files on the first 4GB ? Thanks! e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

cluster
hello are there some network (switch and cards) that have low latency times (perhaps of the order of 20-30 microseconds), but that were not so expensive ? it is intended for a modest, experimental and no numerous athlon cluster i have tried with a 10 mbps hub and 2 k7-550 cluster, but the results seem very bad, i have latency times of 1100 microseconds with process that last 110 microseconds in each one of the processors which networks have been tried? some advice ? thanks
Re: Athlon problems?
there are no big problems just install debian using the inestable version (kernel 2.2.12) evrything will be all rigth :-))

Re: bnx2 netboot FW problem
I found the solution to the problem: The problem seems to be the lack of udev binaries and libs, so I packed them up in the initd. Here's the step-by-step I used: mkdir /tmp/kk cd /tmp/kk zcat /tftpboot/nbi_img/initrd-pxe.3.2.0-4-amd64.img | cpio -i cp -a /lib/udev lib find . | cpio -H newc -o> initrd.cpio gzip initrd.cpio cp initrd.cpio.gz /tftpboot/nbi_img/initrd-pxe.3.2.0-4-bnx2_fixed-amd64.img ln -sf /tftpboot/nbi_img/initrd-pxe.3.2.0-4-bnx2_fixed-amd64.img /tftpboot/nbi_img/initrd-pxe.img Cheers! help to make something work
Hello I started using linux, and I am enthusiasmed. I installed a Debian distribution in a very standard PC (Pentium 200, 32 mb, SVGA, 200 Mb on linux partition). I installed also xfree86 and KDE. KDE and packaged applications (man etc) work. But I can´t make anything else work! I downloaded Netscape 4.5, installed it successfully, and when I run it, it says: Segmentation Fault. I downloaded Wordperfect 8 and, after many tries, I installed it successfully; but xwp says: Floating point fault. I installed also a CAD called SISCAD-P, and it says also: Floating point fault. I tried with other softwares (downloaded from the net) with similar results. You see, I wish use linux not for hacking, but as a stable desktop environment, and I do not wish spend hours editing config files and chmod-ing etc to make it work. Can anyone help me? Thank you Luis Cabral
Re: help to make something work
Thank you for the responses. About those: - this is a experimental instalation, and although I have little space on disk, I tried to install one application at time, so there was always at least 20-30 Mb free. - in startup, the kernel says: Intel Pentium with F0 0F bug - workaround enabled - I tried installing Netscape as a normal user issuing the su command... Re: Newbie X problem
You don't actually even need to boot to single-user mode- hitting ctl-alt-f2 will get you a text-mode login prompt. If you are scarce for cycles once you've logged in, as root you can run ps to find xdm's PID and kill it. NOTE: killing your X server is not enough- xdm will merely bring up another server. Kill XDM first, and then you'll have a fully functional text-mode box to play with your Xconfig files in. -Luis On Mon, 12 Apr 1999, Jens B. Jorgensen wrote: > > You don't need to reinstall. APT setup (was: Re: An idea...)
So I looked at the master lists suggested earlier in this thread and tried to restore the non-US settings that got fubared earlier in my setup. I couldn't get it to work. Here's what I've tried: 1) using dselect, I choose apt as my access method. 2) After retyping the sites that work (note to anyone listening: there really should be an "add source" option in apt- having to re-enter functional sites is dumb, especially since one error means you have to retype everything) I enter http://http.non-us.debian.org/debian as the URL for the new site, stable as the distribution, and non-US as the component. This is the entry that makes sense (since non-US is a directory in stable, and not the other way around) but is not the entry recommended by apt, which says "non-US" should be the distribution and main, non-free, etc. should be the components (which makes no sense.) 3) I select update and get the following errors: Err http://http.non-us.debian.org stable/non-US Packages Could not resolve 'http.non-us.debian.org' Err http://http.non-us.debian.org stable/non-US Release Could not resolve 'http.non-us.debian.org' I can resolve http://http.non-us.debian.org no problem. 4) Repeat process using order suggested by apt(calling non-US the distribution instead of the component.) Doesn't seem to make a difference- same error message. I'm guessing this occurs because non-us.debian is pretty slow for me, and maybe apt thinks this is an error. Is that actually the case? If so, can anyone recommend a non-us mirror that would be faster from North Carolina? If not, can anyone tell me what other solutions I can try? Also, what parameters should I be giving apt, besides the URL? Is non-us a dsitribution or a component? What should the other option be in that case? Finally, who should I write to explaining my problems with apt? Or have these already been hashed out and resolved? Where can I look to for archives of those discussions, if that is the case? Thanks for putting up with all of my questions- this is easily the longest (and possibly the dumbest) help request email I've ever sent. :) My sincerest thanks in advance- Luis P.S. In case it matters, I generally run potato, and my dselect version is 1.4.1.1. P.P.S. In case you care, I want ssh from non-us, and thus the questions. Thanks again... ### "They call the faithful to their knees to hear the softly spoken magic spell:" "There's no place like home... There's no place like home... I'm guessing the above > which you > guys are using works because of symlinks. Jens- I am basically doing what you are doing. I use stable instead of slink, but other than that the same. The trick is that dselect tells me to do something different, which doesn't work! Dselect "suggests" that you use non-US as the distribution, instead of stable, slink, or something else. There is no mention of non-US in the suggested lists of components. -Luis ### "They call the faithful to their knees to hear the softly spoken magic spell:" "There's no place like home... remote login configuration/TERM question
Before I go further, I'd just like to note that I'm only subscribed to the compressed version of the list, so please cc: copies to me, otherwise I might not get them for a while. Thanks. Two separate and basically unrelated questions: 1) I am logging in remotely to my machine (using xdm) from my laptop on a regular basis. For a variety of reasons (speed, resolution, etc.) I prefer to use enlightenment on my laptop and windowmaker on my desktop. Has anyone worked out a clean way to a) detect that I am logging in from the laptop and not the desktop and b) use that information to switch the preferences? In other words, after logging in, I want my machine to know where I am and start the appropriate window manager with the appropriate defaults. Is there a good way to do this? Alternately, if there is no good way to do this within my normal user, is there a good way to create another user (say, liv-remote as opposed to liv) and then give liv-remote full access to liv's files without screwing up liv's ability to access them? 2) Simpler :) Where is the TERM definition for xterm stored, and is it safe to change it? I'm pretty sick of logging into my school account from my box and getting the message "Terminal type "xterm-debian", is unknown." and then having to do a "setenv TERM xterm" in order to run things like pine. I'd prefer to change it on my home machine rather than write a script or something in my school account to detect and fix it automatically- that seems like a hack to me. Anyway, thanks in advance for any help- please remember to CC me- Thanks- Luis ### "They call the faithful to their knees to hear the softly spoken magic spell:" "There's no place like home... I have been using apt-get in my desktop for many years without problems, but after checking some comments about aptitude here in the list, it seemed like a better idea. I was worried about about the "removing problem", which I had seen mentioned here also, so I stuck with apt-get with my desktop. But, since I had fresh installation in the laptop, I thought I would it just start with it, so that there would be no problems with the databases But, I guess that the insallation software used apt-get (it was a net-install), since the first time I tried to use apitutde, right after the installation, it wanted to remove MANY packages... (Nothing could be considered "unused" yet, I suppose...) Not knowing enough to decide whether or not it was really wise to remove them, I again stuck with good old apt-get. So, with net-install at least, using aptitude from the start might not work "out of the box". Well, I will make a fresh install of Sarge (now from DVDs) in a new HD in my desktop, so I'll give it another shot. Best to all, Luis P.S.: any comments on what happened in the laptop installation or how could I have fixed it would be greatly appreciated, although I will check the man pages (etc.) before my next install. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". HTH, Basajaun That was my first idea when reading the original post. In fact, I was thinking of doing that in a laptop of a friend. Is there any reason why this is a "dirty" trick.

RE: slow telnet and ftp connections
Hi, I am running Debian on my laptop and after an upgrade, it tries to enter in "graphical console mode". On boot I get: sisfb: Using MMIO qeue mode the screen goes blank and it enters in graphic mode (with the penguin on the screen), but it's all fuzzy. Re: graphical console problem
Dear Ming and all, Thanks for the reply, Ming. I really appreciate your help. I put "video=sisfb:mode:none" in the append part of lilo.conf and it did work (back to text mode), but now the computer try to fit more lines than it fits in the screen, in the sense that there are lines below what the screen is showing. For instance, if I type "ls -l", some of the entries (and the prompt) will be below the visible part of the screen... Can that be fixed? (It did not happen before the update changed to graphic...) Is there a configuration file for this graphic console? Thanks, Luis On Sunday 07 November 2004 22:59, Ming wrote: > Try to pass "video=sisfb:mode:none" to your kernel, just like pass > vga=ask. kernel update
Dear all, It seems that my kernel is a rather old version: - % uname -a Linux debian 2.4.3 #2 Sat Mar 31 11:29:19 CST 2001 i686 unknown - It seems that the newer versions are 2.4.16 or later. I thought "apt-get update/upgrade" would upgrade the kernel, but it seems that that's not the case. (I don't have any updates there.) So, how does one update the kernel. Although my computer is running fine, I wanted to install the alsa drivers, and I think I'd need something like "alsa-modules-2.4.16-386" or "kernel-headers-2.4.16". (I can't find "kernel-headers-2.4.3".) Are there any risks in updating the kernel? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Best to all, Luis __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Help fixing 'Sarge' Install
Hi all, i posted early as a reply to a thread i thought was related to my issues, i am making a new post to make things easier to respond and explain better what is going on with my system. The main issue i am experiencing is general unresponsiveness on part of kde ( when i am using the console without logging to X first, i have no trouble that i can notice ). The kind of unresponsiveness i am talking abut is Jumpy pointer, screen redraws taking a long time, system seems to freeze temporarily, buttons in the gui dont recognize clicking on them, aplications launching twice after even a single click, etc. i put into a file the information i thought could be usefull for determining what is going on with my system. It can be found at http://lhabia.com/lrrm/ts-report.txt I would apreciate it, if any body could take a look at the file and give me a hand trying to figure out how to fix my Box. dual-boot after crash
Hi, I recently had some problems with my computer and had to reinstall Windows XP. After I done that, I don't get the LILO screen with boot options anymore. It starts XP automatically. I checked and the Windows XP C: drive is the size of the original partition, so I think my Linux partition is still there. So, I would like to set the computer for dual-boot again. But at this point I don't have access to the Linux partition. I just made a bootable floppy from: http://www.tux.org/pub/people/kent-robotti/looplinux/rip/index.html So, I guess that that will allow me to "see" the linux partition. I am not sure if after the crash my linux partition is OK. So I wanted to check its integrity. (cfsck?) How would I do that? Finally how would I make Lilo give me the dual-boot option? ajuda
First of all thank you for your attention. I leave below in more detail the problems I have, now that it seems that I already managed to install (this after trying to be successful with other Distros) for the first time Debian: 1- Having an Nvidia graphics card (I think that's why) I can never get directly through Grub, without first switching to the linux related to Grub 'quiet' by 'nomodeset'. The first question is this, how to definitively configure this to not have to be constantly changing in Grub? Or will it be that when you get the (specific) Nvidia drives this is resolved? 2- When trying to enter as a rooter (in the terminal) using sudo -s, despite correctly entering the password, I am always informed that the password is not correct and I never have access as a rooter. I have already changed the password and the problem persists :( ... That despite being able to access synaptic package manager using in this case exactly the same password that is not accepted in the terminal. Is this normal? How to solve this? 3- Anyway, I need to be able to log in as a rooter otherwise I will not be able to do anything like Debian and it will be even 100% frustrating my experience with Linux :( Thank you in advance for your attention and help -- Forwarded message - De: Luis Inocêncio Date: sáb., 27 de fev. de 2021 às 17:05 Subject: ajuda To: Boa Tarde Desculpem, sou novo no Debian e tudo é novidade e não sei onde conseguirei encontrar ajuda para o problema que tenho?? Cannot Install/Uninstall sendmail
Hi everyone, I'm having trouble installing/removing sendmail in Debian Sid (well, aptosid -- http://www.aptosid.com -- actually). I tried to install and it failed: https://pastebin.com/Qu2jRqsn 'apt -f install' did not fix it, nor did 'dpkg --configure -a'. Since it was not essential (and did not install correctly), I tried to uninstall it, but it also fails: - # apt remove procmail sendmail sendmail-base sendmail-bin sendmail-cf sensible-mda Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: procmail sendmail sendmail-base sendmail-bin sendmail-cf sensible-mda 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 6 to remove and 2 not upgraded. 4 not fully installed or removed. After this operation, 4,213 kB disk space will be freed. Do you want to continue? [Y/n] (Reading database ... 1537409 files and directories currently installed.) Removing sendmail (8.15.2-11) ... Removing sendmail-cf (8.15.2-11) ... Errors were encountered while processing: sendmail-base E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) One notices in the failed install attempt (the pastebin link above): -- adduser: Warning: The home directory `/var/lib/sendmail' does not belong to the user you are currently creating. update-inetd: warning: cannot add service, /etc/inetd.conf does not exist -- I had: -- # ls -ld /var/lib/sendmail drwx-- 2 smmta smmta 4096 Aug 22 15:06 /var/lib/sendmail/ -- Changing ownership to root did not allow me to uninstall it. Aptosid itself does not come with a mail daemon installed, so I must have installed at some point some daemon that created the /var/lib/sendmail. (If I were to try to install again, I'd probably opt for a lighter alternative, something like ssmtp. So, right now, I just want to remove sendmail.) So, I have sendmail-base stuck as not fully installed. It was recommended I install 'openbsd-inetd' (it was not installed, neither was xinetd), but it still fails to install: https://pastebin.com/sStYqMYi (I also still cannot uninstall it...) Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks once more for the support! The problem is now solved. Thanks again for your help.
Disabling Print Screen key
Hi, My Print Screen key is too close to BackSpace, so I keep pressing it by accident. I use KDE, and this makes "KSnapshoyt" pop up. (In fluxbox, it sends the content of the terminal to the printer.) I checked the key assignments of KDE, and I found no shortcut for the PrtSc key, and even defining a different application for that key would still make (only) KSnapshot pop up. (KSnapshot was assigned to Crtl+PrtSc, and I disabled it too, just in case.) My Google searchs did not help (even on this list). So, I decided to disable the key. Using "xev", I saw that the keycode was 111: KeyRelease event, serial 31, synthetic NO, window 0x361, root 0x91, subw 0x0, time 482199882, (485,527), root:(489,552), state 0x0, keycode 111 (keysym 0xff61, Print), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 0 bytes: Indeed, "xmodmap -pk" gave: ... 111 0xff61 (Print) 0xff15 (Sys_Req) ... So, I did "xmodmap -e "keysym Print = BackSpace"". Now, "xev" gives: KeyRelease event, serial 31, synthetic NO, window 0x341, root 0x91, subw 0x0, time 482660638, (-260,401), root:(838,426), state 0x0, keycode 111 (keysym 0xff08, BackSpace), same_screen YES, XKeysymToKeycode returns keycode: 22 XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (08) " and "xmodmap -pk" gives: ... 111 0xff08 (BackSpace) ... But still, KSnapshot pops up, and the backspace has no effect. Any suggestions or ideas (other than remove the key physically)?? Re: Disabling Print Screen key
Hi, First, thanks for the reply! > My system (Debian 3.1, KDE 3.3.2) does not exhibit this behavior by > default. I can enable (and disable) it by going into the KDE Control > Center: K-> Control Center-> Regional & Accessibility-> Keyboard > Shortcuts-> Command Shortcuts-> Graphics-> More Applications-> KSnapshot. > > Perhaps you inadvertently made Print a shortcut for ksnapshot. If so, > you should be able to disable it by going through the above sequence. No, I haven't... As I stated in the beginning, I checked it to make sure. Now, I am at work using Fedora Core 5, and again the PrtSc key is NOT set in KDE, but pressing starts KSnapshot (which I find quite funny). On the other hand, here I can make it work as BackSpace with "xmodmap -e "keysym Print = BackSpace"" (which did not work with Debian). So, I assume it is a Debian-related problem... By the way, I am using Etch, with the Debian kernel 2.6.18-k7. Thanks! Luis -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
