Wireless and kernel 2.6

2004-06-30 Thread linuxnand
Hello all,

I would like to ask you how to setup my wireless adapter using Sarge with a Kernel 2.6
series. It is a Presario 2580US P4 notebook that came with a on board HP WLAN 54g
W450 wireless adapter. It currently has SuSE 9.0 but I haven setup wireless. To make
it simple I would like to erase SuSE and move it to Debian. Has anyone done wireless
setup before? Help or input is much appreciated. Shall I build a custom kernel to it?
What would be the correct driver?

Thanks,
Charlie.

new to Debian

2004-06-16 Thread linuxnand
Hello all,

Although I am using Linux for some time I am interested in learning Debian. I would
like to know if you could point me good sources on the web for documentations, hacks,
tricks on how to setup multimedia, etc besides the Debian install documentation. Any
help is apreciated.
Thanks,
Charlie.

Migrating to Debian: questions

2004-06-24 Thread linuxnand
Hello All,

I am new to Debian but I have been using Linux since 1995. I enjoy the idea of Debian
that offers total independence so I am willing very much to learn it well.

I have installed 3.0R2. It installed kernel 2.2 instead of 2.4. Now, how can I use apt
to have the 2.4 installed?

Also, how can I change the sources.list to upgrade my system to the new packages like
gnome 2.6, KDE 3.3, Mozilla 1.7, etc.

I have installed the base system and then did the X window installating followed by
KDE. Everything works but KDE fonts are nasty. How can I fix the fonts? Download more
fonts, or shall I say the appropriate fonts?

How can I setup the sound? Is there any howto? I have installed ALSA with apt-get but
the system does not detect my hardware. Where shall I go for help?

In order to have Kernel 2.6, I guess I have to compile it manually myself, right?
Well, that I have done before. Or can I do it with apt-get.

Thanks in advance.

Best Base system install

2004-06-25 Thread linuxnand
Hello all,

What bootable ISO CD shall I use (where to download it) or maybe a bootable disk to
freshly install Debian?

What I want is to install a base system with ext3 partitions (therefore I need a
bootable CD iso that can do the Debian Install procedure to partition the HD using
ext3 not ext2)?

Once I have the base system installed, then I will do the packages installations
online as I did before.

I wonder what are the good Debian ISOs repositories. I would prefer to use newer
packages so do you recomend to use a Sarge install ISO?

Thanks again.

Questions about x window environment (kdm and xdm)

2004-06-26 Thread linuxnand
Hello all,

I have installed Sarge with the netiso cd and then installed x-window, kde, mozilla
and everything to have a working desktop.

I have later installed xdm and kdm and changed /etc/inittab to have run level 5.

When it starts it tries to run kdm but then crashes. If I type manually then either
xdm and kdm work. What do I need to edit/change to overcome this problem?

The message I get after it boots is:

Starting K Desktop Manager: kdm
Not Starting X display manager (xdm); it is not the default display manager.

Then it shows the text login screen. It looks like that it is trying to load both kdm
and xdm.

Can anyone point me the way how to solve this?

Thanks,
Charlie.

How to setup sound under Debian

2004-06-26 Thread linuxnand
Hello all,

I would like to understand how to setup sound under Debian.
I am using a 2.6.6-1-686 kernel and I have noticed that there are no alsa modules for
this kernel on the online repositories that I am using.

So, how do I set it up? Are there any updated howtos?

I am enjoying using Debian, discovering how it works. As soon as I setup this desktop
I will remove SuSE from my notebook and use Debian.

Thanks,
Charlie.

optimizing X configuration

2004-06-26 Thread linuxnand
Hello all,

I have a Toshiba PII Equium 7000S desktop with 256mb of Ram and an inboard ATI 3D Rage
Pro AGP that has 32mb shared memory configured to it. The monitor is a Gateway EV910
and is properly configured in my XF86Config-4.

However I can only do 800x600 with either 16 or 24 bits of depth. I would like to do
more. Do I have to buy another video card or is there any way to improve this
configuration?

PS: I am not attaching the XF86Config-4 file not to send a bigger email.

Thanks for the help.
