xfree86 cannot map sys bios
I'm running unstable on 2.4.20, with xserver-xfree 4.2.1-5. I've tried with a voodoo3 and the tdfx driver, and a tnt2 with the nv driver. The errors were the same. With startx, X comes up on the display, but quits shortly after. The only real error I see is this: (EE) NV(0): Cannot map SYS BIOS Any clue what this is? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Re: bash problem - cannot telnet to my box
I had a similar problem on a Redhat 5.1 system once. I was unable to login locally or remotely as anything but root. It ended up I had a file called nologin in my /etc/ directory, once I removed this I could login. But this sounds like it is a problem more related to your system not finding a required library. Good luck. George Bonser wrote: > > Same thing happened to me yesterday. I thought I screwed it up somehow so > I didn't say anything. installing ethernet nic
Howdy, I am attempting to install a 3com 3c905 nic through the debian install. While doing so, I get prompted for a module command-line argument for my particular nic. I have read that the 3c59x driver will work for the 3c905 but I don't know what to enter for the module command-line argument. Can someone please let me know what to enter here or where to find the particular data? The HOWTO's don't provide the level of resolution that I am seeking. You are attached to the Internet, yes? > Yes, this box does have an internet connection, but good point. In fact, browsing just now to verify my previous check of the mirror led me to a work-around for this problem. I noticed the Packages and Packages.gz files in those directories on the mirror, downloaded the .gz versions, unzipped them, named them according to the apparent naming scheme in /var/lib/apt/lists, and with those files present, aptitude update did what I expected it to do and dist-upgrade now seems to be chugging away. Thanks again for your reply, Kent. To the developers, I'm not sure why this happened. I would have thought that aptitude would have gone out and gotten those Packages files by itself. Instead, I had to get them by hand and put them in place and with that done, aptitude seems to be doing what I would expect. That may be a bug, but I really don't know. -Kevin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Problems with Sarge on OldWorld 604e PowerMac: booting, quik, 2.6 kernel, etc.
Hi List- I'm having some difficulty with this combination. I'd like to use quik to boot this OldWorld 7300 PowerMac (604e) directly from the HDD (without any MacOS tools) into a 2.6 kernel. It seems that Debian is the only distribution that makes this practical to do without doing all sorts of stuff from scratch. I can install Woody by first booting from a bootable floppy image available on the mirrors and then using a root.bin floppy image at the same location: /debian/dists/woody/main/disks-powerpc/3.0.23-2002-05-21/powermac/images-1.44 [ ] boot-floppy-hfs.img 16-May-2002 11:22 1.4M [ ] root.bin16-May-2002 11:21 1.4M Woody installs and runs fine, but I've got very old software. I'd like to use relatively current versions of kerberos and openafs available in Sarge, so I upgraded following the instructions in the Release Notes for Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 (`sarge'), PowerPC Chapter 4 - Upgrades from previous releases at http://www.debian.org/releases/testing/powerpc/release-notes/ch-upgrading.en.html Though there were some hiccups, I got them worked out and managed the upgrade to Sarge without further problems. The problems arise when I want to install a 2.6 kernel. I've tried many things now, but ultimately, I end up making the box unbootable from the HDD. I can boot from that bootable floppy above, mount the root fs, then chroot into it and make modifications to the Sarge installation, but cannot figure out how to get quik to boot the 2.6 kernel, or for that matter, how to make a bootable floppy that will use /dev/sda2 as the root fs instead of /dev/fd0. I found the knl package, but the knl binary insists that every kernel image I have is not a kernel image (including the 2.2 kernel that ships with Woody, the 2.6.8 kernel image I installed from aptitude, as well as the kernel on the bootable floppy: zImage---even after I gunzip it), so adjusting the root fs and swap dev for the kernel image is something that I cannot seem to do. When I install the 2.6.8 kernel from aptitude (yes, the correct one for my arch) and edit quik.conf to use it instead of the 2.2 kernel shipped with Woody (which boots fine), I can no longer boot from the HDD. The closest I can get is a weirdly colored penguin logo (sometimes red, sometimes blue, sometimes green, etc.) Furthermore, even though I can boot from the floppy and chroot into the HDD root fs and thus edit quik.conf again (restoring it to its original state), I still cannot boot from the HDD (yes, I did run quik after revising the quik.conf file in each case; I even used the installer program on the root.bin image to run quik after making the revisions in a console and thereby noticed that it was running quik -v -f -r /target, but still to no avail; back in the console, I tried quik -v -r -f / while chrooted into /target and still no joy; part of the problem with doing it through the install program was that after upgrading to Sarge, the upgraded quik package relies on a glibc version that the root.bin image doesn't have, so I chrooted into /target, removed quik, adjusted my sources.list file to return to stable, then updated and installed quik again, thus restoring quik to the same one originally installed I think), but still no success. Am I doing something wrong with quik here? I've read that it can be incredibly difficult to install right (though doing it with the Woody install program was easy enough) and that the OpenFirmware in these machines is very buggy. Is it possible for me to netboot one of these machines with bootp and/or tftp and stuff? Maybe that's a better solution than struggling with quik. I've tried installing Sarge right off the bat, but I don't find any bootable floppy images for booting and installing Sarge on an OldWorld PPC. The CD images are there, but I've read that these machines cannot boot linux from the CD. The floppy images I find in /debian/dists/sarge/main/installer-powerpc/20050305/images/powerpc/floppy are not bootable. I tried both the boot.img and the ofonlyboot.img and the 7300 ejects the disks as unbootable in each case. It appears that the only way I can get Sarge on this machine is to install Woody and then upgrade to Sarge which I've done 3 or 4 times now. If that's not the case, could someone please explain the alternatives to me? But I need a 2.6 kernel for openafs-1.3.81 in Sarge, and every time I try to boot from one, I toast my system and end up having to start all over. I've tried many things to avoid starting over, but none work. Once I've tried booting with quik into a 2.6 kernel, I can no longer boot from the HDD no matter what I try (and I've tried many things). The only way I've found it possible to recover is to install Woody again (sigh...). Any advice would be most welcome. Also, is this a post more well-suited to a developer list? TIA. -Kevin PS. Re: Tape Backup Problem
I had the same problem, but I had a scsi HP and I only tried taper. I was using 2.2.12 with slink. Kevin - Original Message - From: "JoeCool" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: ; Cc: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, May 16, 2000 10:18 AM Subject: Tape Backup Problem Hi All, I've been trying to get tape backup working on a server and almost everytime I attempt to backup files to the tape drive the machine goes crazy. The load goes sky high (way over 100.00) and it stops responding to everything. Maybe someone out there has some insight on the problem. Specs: Debian 2.0 with Kernel 2.2.2 running on a Dell with a Quantum DLT4000 tape drive. Details: I attempted to do a test backup a 150meg directory to tape using the tape backup program "Taper" After about 10min of it running (46% done) the machines load starting going up and up. I tried to stop the program, and kill it but was unable to since machine stop responding to my commands via telnet. The load was very high... --> load average: 246.98, 267.86, 210.28 Then i couldn't even telnet to the machine or anything. Everything appeared to be down, except that I could ping the machine. Finally about 30min later I was able to telnet back into the machine. I noticed several of the following messages in the messages file and also when i typed "dmesg" -- May 3 14:23:23 taz kernel: SCSI host 0 abort (pid 228089503) timed out - resetting May 3 14:23:23 taz kernel: SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0. -- So a week later I attempted again with tape backup using a different program. this time i used "Tob". I did a small test backup using a 20meg directory. It appeared to work fine. I was able to backup and restore the files. I then attempted to backup a 2gig directory. After about 15min the machine went crazy like last time and load went up and I got locked out so I had to have someone reboot the machine. Didn't see any error messages in any logs or anything. Anyone ever expierance this problem? Anyone have any ideas what might be causing it? I been trying to figure it out for a couple weeks now with no luck. Any help is appreciated. I must've missed some option in the kernel, or is my lilo.conf is set up wrong? thanks for any help, Kevin

If you are just looking to learn a first language for the fun of it I would go with c++ with emphasis on object orient paradigms. That is what most jobs look for and most open source projects use in case you want to help. On the other hand it's a shitty language with a LOT of pitfalls once you need to implement things effectively. I agree with Micha - First define what you want to program in the long run. If you aspire to becoming a kernel hacker then learn C. If you want to write scripts as web robots for screen scraping then you have more options but perl is often used here. If you want to write gnome applications - C, if KDE then C++ A few notes: C is the basis of many languages and some people - such as Bruce Eckel of Mindview - actually teach C as a preparation to learning C++ and Java. C is a good start. Python is object oriented and as such is useful if you specifically want to learn nice, clean object oriented language. However its not a good start if you want to then move to another language. Basic is awful - I started with Basic in the early 80's and it was the defacto learning standard - but even then we knew it was awful! If you want to write dynamic websites then PHP (very C like) or Perl (a bit C like) are supported by just about every ISP. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: how to get rid of the staircase effect
martin f krafft <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > > apsfilter. is there another method, maybe one with less weight? Well, the "ifhp" package contains the "standard" LPRng input filter, assuming you're using LPRng. If you want a dumb filter (one that doesn't make any effort to, say, print PostScript to non-PostScript printers or do the right thing with DVI files sent directly to the printer), "lpf" is included in the "lprng" package, and the LPRng-HOWTO (included in the "lprng-doc" package) mentions using it: 4.10.3. The Jaggies - LF to CR-LF Conversion With lpf Let me add that, in the past, I've had nothing but trouble using HP's JetDirect... erm... directly. They've probably improved things since I last had to deal with it, but their old network stack couldn't handle more than one connection at once so, if a job was printing, the printer would just refuse new connections until it completed; sometimes jobs would simply mysteriously get lost; the printer would just get wedged as machines trying to print jobs fought for its attention; and on and on. The solution was (and is) to designate one machine as the spooler for that printer and have all the other machines send the jobs through it. This is straightforward to set up using LPRng, and it has the added bonus that you can install and configure all sorts of fancy printer filtering stuff on just the one, spooling, machine and have all the clients take instant advantage of it. (Samba can be used to provide shared printer service for any Windows clients that are lounging around, too.) This is well worth setting up, in my opinion. -- Kevin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Everything > else (google, slashdot) resolves correctly. You presumably made your local server authoritative for "mydomain.com", and put an SOA record for "mydomain.com" and an A record for "xxx.mydomain.com" in your zone file, but you didn't include any records for "www.mydomain.com". You have a few choices: 1. You can keep doing things that way and manually duplicate the address record your ISP has for "www.mydomain.com" in your own zone file. If your ISP changes the IP address out from under you, you'll need to manually fix your own records. 2. You can keep doing things that way and delegate the "www.mydomain.com" domain to your ISP's name server using an NS record on your local name server. This is terrible DNS practice (because the ISP's name server won't normally have an SOA record for "www.mydomain.com"; instead, it'll have one for "mydomain.com" that conflicts with the one *you* have), but that doesn't particularly matter for an internal DNS server, and I believe things will work correctly in this particular case. No guarantee, though... 3. You can make your local server authoritative for "xxx.mydomain.com" instead of "mydomain.com" and include SOA and A records for *that* domain name. This will work fine unless you later decide that there are lots of names at "mydomain.com" that you'd rather have resolve to local hosts and "www.mydomain.com" is the only exception. Then, you either need a separate zone file for every such host, or you need to switch to method 1 or 2. > I tried to play with BIND's configuration through webmin, but I didn't > make it work as expected. Worse I broke my first working step. I've never used "webmin" so I don't know what it botched up. To implement scheme (3) above, what you want is this. In what follows, I'm assuming that xxx.mydomain.com (192.168.1.2) is also the machine running your local DNS service. /etc/bind/named.conf: [ . . . ] // add entries for other zones below here zone "xxx.mydomain.com" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.xxx.mydomain.com"; } /etc/bind/db.xxx.mydomain.com: ; authoritative for $ORIGIN xxx.mydomain.com @ in soa @ hostmaster ( 20030217 ; Serial 28800; refresh period (8 hours) 7200 ; retry interval (2 hours) 604800 ; expire time (7 days) 86400 ) ; negative TTL (1 day) in ns @ in a 192.168.1.2 -- Kevin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Best WWW browser..
Hi, I'm using Debian 3.0r1 stable (woody) and am currently using Galon for web-surfing. However, it seems to break on some sites - they seem to be moaning about Frames support mostly. bogofilter feeback to mail server
I have a small LAN for a half dozen users with a POP mail server that I set up. The mail server filters spam with bogofilter. On my workstation, I use Mutt. Sometimes a bit of spam will get past bogofilter and make it to my workstation (separate box from the mail server, although same LAN). Has anyone come up with a good way of getting that spam back to the mail server so that bogofilter can be run against it to update the files goodlist.db and spamlist.db? I've seen several pages on the web on how to use Mutt macros to send the spam through bogofilter -N and -S when bogofilter is run on the same machine as Mutt. But what I haven't figured out is a clever way of using similar macros to get that same type of feedback back to bogofilter on the mailserver box. Any thoughts? Just > forward the message as attached and perhaps send a command in the > subject line, and have a perl script listening on the other end that > runs bogofilter on the message depending on the command. Setting up a user/mailbox on the mail server would probably work. You could bounce the spam email from your client box to the mail server. And then, probably easier than have a perl script parse the Subject line, just run a cron job to pipe the email to bogofilter and delete it when finished. What I have done instead though, and it seems to be working, is add the following to my .muttrc as a macro: macro index X "unset wait_key\nssh -f \ my.mailserver.com bogofilter -S -d /home/kevin/.bogofilter \n \ set wait_key\n" macro pager X "unset wait_key\nssh -f \ my.mailserver.com bogofilter -S -d /home/kevin/.bogofilter \n \ set wait_key\n" [macros courtesy of a user on the bogofilter mail list] Obviously this is MUA specific. While this macro sends spam feedback back to bogofilter so that it can get better at detecting spam, it is not sending bogofilter 'good, non-spam' email to help build the goodlist.db. Of course I could do this with more Mutt macros attached to my saves, replies, etc, but then I'd be teaching bogofilter about MY good email. Yet bogofilter is running on a LAN filtering email for all of the users in the LAN, not just me. I'm not sure how critical it is to teach bogofilter about good mail on a continual basis. Spam is spam, so having only me as the spam teacher for bogofilter will probably serve all the LAN users o.k. But good, non-spam email is user specific, so I would think bogofilter would want contributions from everyone. Perhaps I'm trying to use bogofilter in a way for which it was not designed. We'll see how it works in this setup. More later. Kevin -- Kevin Coyner mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] GnuPG key: 1024D/8CE11941 pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

They certainly aren't doing what you want them to do: they aren't determining which physical card gets assigned to which logical device. > Now I can only ping all three addresses if eth0 is connected by cable. > eth1 and eth2 no longer respond though ifconfig output has not changed. Maybe check again---I believe the machine will behave the same whether you include that kernel setup string or not. If it's a genuine effect, see if there's any difference in the kernel log messages between the two cases. The behaviour can---in theory---vary from driver to driver, but here's the way it should work for the eepro100 driver and most other PCI drivers. Whether the eepro100 driver is loaded as a module or compiled into the kernel, at some point its initialization function will be called. The initialization function uses the standard kernel "pci_module_init()" function which, ultimately, enumerates the PCI devices in bus/device/function order, the same order you see the devices if you do a "cat /proc/pci". At this point, the behaviour can differ from driver to driver, but the eepro100 driver allocates the next "eth%d" device, binds it to that card, and overwrites the irq and I/O port base with the correct values for the card, completely ignoring the values you supplied in the setup string. The order *is* deterministic, you just can't determine it using the kernel setup string---eth0 through eth2 will always be assigned in bus/device/function order, which means they'll be assigned in order according to the physical PCI slot. I believe the person who said most drivers probe in MAC-address order was mistaken. According to an old mailing list post by Donald Becker: http://beowulf.es.embnet.org/listarchives/linux-tulip/1999/04/0048.html the 3c509 driver is unique in activating multiple cards in MAC address order. The PCI drivers all (?) detect them in PCI bus/device/function order. This gets much more complicated if you have PCI cards of multiple types (they are enumerated in bus/device/function order *within* each driver, but the order the driver initialization functions are called depends on the order they're compiled into the kernel, more or less). If you have (E)ISA legacy cards or certain motherboard chipsets, it's complicated even further. > Also if I bring the interfaces down and backup I get an error both > ways on the last interface. The order of the interfaces does not > matter. [ . . . ] > ifup eth1 > ifup eth0 > ifup eth2 > SIOCADDRT: File exists You can see which command is generating this by running "ifup" with the "-v" option. "ifup" implicitly does a: route add default gw 10.0.1.3 eth0 (or eth1 or eth2) for each "ifup" with a "gateway 10.0.1.3" line, and I assume that's the culprit. I don't know why it's working twice but failing the third time. Again, the "-v" flag might help. -- Kevin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with the "ether=" kernel parameter. It would work the same either way. It's just the way Linux does business: if you run "tcpdump -i eth1" on the Linux machine, you'll probably see it accepting packets on eth1. However, there's nothing forcing it to *reply* to, say, a ping on the same interface the original packet came in on. With "eth1" connected, packets are coming in on that interface but trying to go out on the disconnected "eth0". You have to bring "eth0" down before they go out on "eth1" instead. Then, you have to bring "eth1" down before they go out on "eth2" instead. There are ways to force interface affinity, in the sense that a packet whose source address is 10.0.1.11 can be forced to route out on eth1, but that requires something like rule-based routing. -- Kevin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I hope you also changed your real password to "password", or else you're trying to log in with password "password". Besides that, the culprit is probably extra backslashes. Instead of: name "domainname.atusername" you want: name "domain\\username" with the backslash doubled instead of quadrupled. Note that "domain" should probably be the simple NT domain name (not a fully qualified hostname). Similarly, the entries in "chap-secrets" should look like: # Secrets for authentication using CHAP # clientserver secret IP addresses domainname\\username PPTP YourRealPassword SERVER_IP PPTP domainname\\username YourRealPassword SERVER_IP with the backslashes doubled, not quadrupled. boolalpha (c++ question)
I'm learning C++ and ran into a bit of difficulty with boolalpha. I guess I don't have all the right libraries loaded (although I would have thought this one was quite basic) because the following doesn't work: cout.setf(ios_base::boolalpha); // from textbook The err msg I get is: `ios_base' undeclared (first use this function) So o.k., I see that there's been no declaration. So I looked through my /usr/include and did some grepping for boolalpha, and nothing is returned. Which must mean I'm missing a header file. Could someone please give me a tip as to what header file I might be missing, and even better, what package it might be in? First, thanks much for your response. I'm running testing, so I apt-get'd g++-3.2 just now with no problem and tested out boolalpha, and presto, it worked! Thanks. Second, question about how to best set up the dual compilers: Like you, I'll use 2.95 to compile downloaded software, and 3.2 for stuff I write. Do you change the symlink in /usr/bin depending upon what you are doing? Is there a better way such that you won't forget to change that symlink cause I know sooner or later I'll forget. When I compile my own stuff, I use qmake. So it's easy enough for me to have qmake.conf point to 3.2. Is there debian package software that uses qmake? If not, then I can leave my symlink in /usr/bin pointing towards 2.95 and just change the pointer in my qmake.conf. libc6: did it move from unstable to testing?
I'm running a strictly testing box, and just a bit ago I did an apt-get update and apt-get dist upgrade, and before I knew it, the system was downloading 89 upgrades, one of which was libc6 ver 2.3.1-14. But when I go to packages.debian.org, and look at the libc6 debs in there, I see that it clearly says that ver 2.3.1-14 is still unstable, and that testing should be 2.2.5-14.3. Normally an upgrade like this is good stuff, but this time it caused me some problems, namely it uninstalled php4. So I'm a bit lost. Did I mess something up? Or was libc6 or something else moved from unstable to testing just a bit early? Not quite sure whether I should try to back track and get back to libc6 ver 2.2.5-14.3 so I can get my php4 back, or whether there's another way of getting this done without going to a totally sid box. No problem. But I guess I'm still a bit surprised that this upgrade forced me to uninstall php4 (at least the forced uninstall is better than simply breaking it). Anyway, I need to run php. Am I correct in assuming that if I want to run php4, I'll have to apt-get -t unstable install php4 and that if I do this, that it will seek out all of the upgrade dependencies it needs from unstable. For example, if I check the dependencies of php4 unstable, I see that it requires apache-common >1.3.27, yet my current testing version is 1.3.26-1.1. So will this automatically get updated to unstable too? And perhaps further dependencies down the line as well, in essence making this box a sid box? Sorry for the detailed and probably somewhat obvious question, but I switched over to Debian last summer, and am loving it. But this is the first time I've encountered this type of situation where a testing package upgrade (libc6) caused an incompatitibility with another testing package, in the case php4. So it's more like having your own machine. Cost -- various plans, but even the low end at $52/year gets you 100 MB of space. Support has been good, but only via email. At that price no one is going to pick up the phone for you. Kevin -- Kevin Coyner mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] GnuPG key: 1024D/8CE11941 pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature
Re: Iptables is driving me nuts (beginner)
"n/a" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > > Apparently there's something i'm not getting thru my thick skull about > packet filtering. I think others have pointed out the main problem---packets being forwarded by the machine don't pass through the INPUT and OUTPUT chains. This behaviour differs from the old "ipchains" behaviour: see iptables(8), the section titled "COMPATIBILITY WITH IPCHAINS". If you're trying to build your tables based on old "ipchains" examples, you'll run into trouble. > Could someone explain to me in text (no diagrams) how a > packet is evaluated and then processed tru the chains, also what is done and > not-done any more after a packet has passed thru a chain. There's a good explanation in the Netfilter Hacking HOWTO: http://www.netfilter.org/documentation/HOWTO//netfilter-hacking-HOWTO.html though it uses a couple of ASCII diagrams. In a nutshell, the kernel networking code includes several netfilter "hooks" where packets can be examined, dropped, modified, rerouted, or whatever. An IP packet arriving on any interface (even the loopback interface) is first passed to the NF_IP_PRE_ROUTING hook. This happens even before the kernel decides whether the packet is destined for a local process or needs to be forwarded to another machine. Next, the packet enters the kernel routing code which decides what to do with it. Packets directed at a local IP address pass through the NF_IP_LOCAL_IN hook. After this, they are dealt with by the kernel in the "usual" manner (including passing the data up to an appropriate user process). Packets that must be forwarded don't pass through this hook. Instead, they pass through the NF_IP_FORWARD hook, then through the NF_IP_POST_ROUTING hook, and then to the appropriate device driver. Locally generated packets are handled first by the routing code before being passed to the NF_IP_LOCAL_OUT hook (which can change their routing) and then the NF_IP_POST_ROUTING hook, and then to the appropriate device. The upshot is this: Packets arriving from a different machine and directed at one of the firewall's IP addresses pass through the NF_IP_PRE_ROUTING and NF_IP_LOCAL_IN hooks. Packets arriving from a different machine that must be forwarded to another machine pass through the NF_IP_PRE_ROUTING, the NF_IP_FORWARD, and the NF_IP_POST_ROUTING hooks. Locally generated packets destined for another machine pass through the NF_IP_LOCAL_OUT and NF_IP_POST_ROUTING hooks. Packets sent from the firewall back into the firewall (e.g., "telnet localhost") pass out through the NF_IP_LOCAL_OUT and NF_IP_POST_ROUTING hooks and then back in through the NF_IP_PRE_ROUTING and NF_IP_LOCAL_IN hooks. That's all assuming that none of the hooks interfere with the packet. Since the hooks can drop, modify, or otherwise reroute the packet, the actual path of a packet can be even more complicated. The hooks can do all sorts of things. One of the main things they do is apply the rules that you set with "iptables". If the only table you configure is the "filter" table, its three chains INPUT, OUTPUT, and FORWARD, will be applied at the LOCAL_IN, LOCAL_OUT, and FORWARD hooks. Therefore, packets will only pass through one of the three filter chains (except packets through the loopback which are processed by the OUTPUT chain on the way out and the INPUT chain on the way in). In your case, it looks like you need to do some masquerading for your internal LAN, so things get a bit more complicated. If you configure the "nat" table, too, destination NAT (i.e., changing the destination of a packet) in the "nat" PREROUTING chain is applied in the PRE_ROUTING hook: a packet arriving from the big, bad Internet that *seems* to be for the firewall's external IP address could be *really* for the firewall or it might be for a machine on the internal LAN. The destination NAT is applied at the PRE_ROUTING stage so that it can rewrite the destination address before the kernel routing code makes its decision. Then, it gets passed to LOCAL_IN or FORWARD as appropriate. (Destination NAT can also be applied via the "nat" OUTPUT chain in the OUTPUT hook if you want to redirect locally generated packets for some reason; and source NAT is applied via the "nat" POSTROUTING chain in the POST_ROUTING hook after the packet has already passed through the "filter" OUTPUT or FORWARD chains.) I hope that helps. I can't tell from the configuration rules you gave exactly what it is you're trying to do. It looks like you want internal hosts to be able to make direct SMTP and POP connections to a certain subnet of external hosts and web connections to "kottweb", but you want to prevent all other connections (except web connections proxied through the firewall). Can you clarify this? -- Kevin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Building a source tarball..
Hi, I'm running Debian 3.0r1 stable (woody) on a x86 laptop. I know how to build a source tarball into binaries and how to bung 'em into /usr/local/bin. However, I have recently found (thanks to this list) how to build the kernel source into a .deb package using make-kpkg - what I want to know, is there a way to do the same thing with a foo.tar.gz? Then do a dpkg -i foo.deb? Anyone point me in the right direction? Or should I stick with: ./configure ./make ./ make install ? Sure, use: tar tvfj linuxbackup.tar.bz2 | less and you'll get an "ls -l"-style directory listing. The symlinks should have an "lrwxrwxrwx" mode, and you should be able to see their values. I believe you've been bitten by a queer bit of "tar" behaviour. Some time ago, there was a security bug where "tar" could be tricked into following a symlink it had just created and then overwrite files outside the directory where the restore was supposedly contained. To fix this problem, "tar" was patched to use a regular file placeholder for possibly troublesome symlinks. When "tar" completes, it's supposed to go back and change those placeholder files back into symlinks, but if "tar" crashes (or is stopped) before the restore completes, the symlinks will be left as (zero-length) regular files. Perhaps you interrupted the restore, or perhaps it crashed while trying to restore "/proc" or something. Then, "tar" wouldn't have had a chance to go back and fix all the placeholders. I would suggest reattempting the restore without extracting "/proc". "tar"'s exclude mechanism is singularly stupid, so: tar -jxv --exclude=proc will exclude *all* files and directories named "proc", not just the top-level one. However, you can do: ssh '...' | tar -jt | egrep -v '^proc' >FILES_TO_RESTORE ssh '...' | tar -jxv --files-from=FILES_TO_RESTORE to avoid restoring the problematic "/proc" directory while still restoring any "proc" files and directories hiding elsewhere. If you still end up with screwed up symlinks no matter what you do, all is not lost. On the 192.168.2.10 machine, run the following command: tar -jtvf linuxbackup.tar.bz2 | egrep '^l' | \ perl -lane 'print "ln -snf $F[7] $F[5]" if (@F == 8 && $F[6] eq "->")' \ > FIX_MY_SYMLINKS That'll create a shell script capable of recreating all the broken symlinks (except those where the symlink filename or value contained whitespace---hopefully you don't have any of those that matter). After you've double-checked that the commands in FIX_MY_SYMLINKS aren't total nonsense, then on the broken machine, run: cd / ssh 192.168.2.10 cat FIX_MY_SYMLINKS | sh and your symlinks should be restored. I'm planning on doing a similar procedure to my > other machine. Is there anything other than /proc that I need to > exclude? I was surprised to find that /dev made it through intact. It'll depend on your kernel and what other "special filesystems" you've mounted. If you run "mount" without options, it'll list what's mounted, and you can figure out what isn't a real filesystem from there. In addition to "proc", you might see "usbdevfs", "devpts", and "shm" filesystems that shouldn't be copied. -- Kevin Buhr <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Microsoft's software has always sucked, so I can't imagine they're losing too much sleep over quality or security, their Trusted Computing(tm) initiative notwithstanding. Personally, I think Trusted Computing is intended for Microsoft, the various large copyright holders, and three-letter government agencies, not those poor souls stuck with Windows. What's taking all the time is getting all the hardware vendors onboard the shiny new Palladium train, as well as twisting the arms of those who resist. This all takes time and money. Like many of us I think free software is a better deal for everyone except for proprietary software vendors like Microsoft. As more people come to this inevitable conclusion Microsoft will most likely resort to the same kind of illegal anti-competitive tactics that has gotten it in trouble before. Should be an interesting ride anyway. Sure hope they lose though. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
custom kernel hangs during boot (debian sid/unstable)
Here's my issue-- So I had to re-install my system today (long story). I run a custom kernel in order to get NVIDIA drivers to work (the gcc version mismatches always have stumped me w/regard to getting the drivers working with stock kernels). To make a custom kernel, I did the following (all running sid/unstable: 1.)got the kernel configuration file for the package kernel-image-2.4.22-686-smp from /boot. 2.)Installed the kernel source for same kernel (2.4.22) and used the config file from the stock .deb as the .config in the kernel source tree 3.) after a "make menuconfig oldconfig", where I simply exited and saved, I ran: make dep; make-kpkg clean; make-kpkg --append-to-version=.311003 --revision=1 --initrd kernel-image modules-image 4.) installed the resulting deb w/dpkg, ran lilo, and rebooted After rebooting, the system always hangs w/the custom kernel at the line "INIT: version 2.8...". This is not because it can't find the hard drive (that was the problem before doing --initrd with make-kpkg). Further, the stock kernel runs fine (only problem is installing the nvidia drivers, which result in non-loading modules with the stock kernel and gcc-3.2.2), and was compiled with gcc 3.2.2. I used the config file from the stock kernel deb and am using gcc 3.2.2 (the current version in sid, the machine was installed earlier today, the 31st of Oct.) Any input would be appreciated. Also, if someone can point out how to get the NVIDIA stuff working with the stock kernel, that would be another good solution. New user help...
I feel like RedHat has sold out on me as a paying customer, so I'm looking at Debian. I've run into a few problems, though... First, the framebuffer console looks hideous on my laptop. I searched the list archives, but the only solutions I found were using the kernel parameter 'vga=normal' (no effect) or recompiling the kernel (something I prefer to avoid). Second, I tried 'apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-586'. I got the new kernel installed and running (which nicely took care of the above problem), but it didn't come with pcmcia modules so now I have no network. Are those in another package? Third, to see if apt-get is as easy as everyone says, I did 'apt-get install xfce'. It downloaded all the dependencies, or so it says... but when I run startxfce, it bombs because it can't find 'xinit'. What am I missing? Thanks for helping out a newbie. Hi, I'm using Debian 3.0r1 stable on a dialup in the UK. I'm using PAP authentication that CHAT's to the modem then launches pppd and away we go. What I'd like is for the machine to check and set (if necessary) the system clock based on the time from one of the many timeservers on the internet. What package do I need to do this? How do I make it autorun once pppd has got the ppp connection up and running (I use the pon script) Thanks for your help, Kevin -- Please don't read any further if you're offended by mailservers adding legalese to the bottom of eMails.. ;-) The information contained in this e-mail is intended only for the individual or entity to whom it is addressed.
