Can't set up internet connection

2007-11-20 Thread jamesfoster
Hi,
I have installed Debian 4.0 ETCH on an 'acer' laptop. I have followed the help
pages to set up a modem based connection, but when I have the dialogue box I
can only see an 'ethernet' connection to enable, and the 'add' and 'delete'
buttons that the help page tell me to use are absent (there are only 'activate'
or 'deactivate' buttons). Without an 'add' button, I don't see what I can do.
Please help!
James

Hi,
I downloaded the wvdial program and tried to open it with Gdebi package
installer. I got the error message:

'Error: Dependency is not satisfied: libanicon f4.2.'

I downloaded the package for the i386 architecture, which I believe my laptop
is, (and in fact I tested with another package and got the error message
'Architecture not suitable')

ppp set up

2007-12-13 Thread jamesfoster
Hi,
I still cannot set up dial up internet connection for Debian Etch. Help!
I try to install the wvdial program but get

'Error: Dependency is not satisfied: libaniconf4.2'

so no joy there.

I have installed the ppp program as advised in a help section of the Debian.org
site but when I type in 'pppconfig' as advised on the root terminal, it doesn't
recognise the command.

I cant' find a program called 'am' that the help notes advised me to
install with the 'ppp' program.

Please help me to resolve my problem (if possible in simple, clear layman's
language) or direct me to easy to follow, comprehensive instructions. I am
trying to break away from the microsoft monopoly, but drowning in the process.

Thanks

Re: ppp set up

Hi,
The ppp program seems to now be installed but not configured.

When I go to 'Network settings' I can now see a modem connection but it says
the interface ppp0 is not configured.

I go to 'properties' and 'modem' and click on 'auto detect' but get the message
that no modem could be detected.

The icon 'OK' at the bottom of the network pages is not active.

What can I do now?

Thanks again,

James

I don't know what that's about.
If it's a dependency, apt should pull it in.

Probably because it's not installed.
It's an app in its own right and therefore must be installed independently.

After installation, you'll be able to call it up from a root terminal.

If it hasn't been pulled in as a dependency it probably isn't necessary
with the average end-user box.
