problem during boot-up

2004-11-25 Thread jack kinnon
Hi folks,
More about my upgrading problem.

Using 'scroll-lock', I can read the following message during boot-up.

Starting system log daemon : syslogd
syslogd : cannot create /dev/log : address family not supported by protocol

Does the above symptom ring a bell?

Problem still there

2004-11-27 Thread jack kinnon
Hi,
Yes, I used a 'hand-made' 2.6.3 kernel.
I checked the kernel config to ensure that 'Unix domain sockets' is selected.
I even re-create kernel from the source but the problem is still there.

Further suggestions, pls.

Cheers

Problem re-stated

2004-11-29 Thread jack kinnon

Hi folks,

I will re-state my problem. I had been running 'stable' for months when I decided to upgrade to 'testing' via the net. I did a apt 'update' followed by a  'dist upgrade'. Because the number of bytes to be downloaded exceeded my volume-based subscription for the month, I had to continue the upgrade the following month when I had accumulated enough volume. But then the system can only boot-up in basic command-line mode, without proper log, and cannot go online.

Using 'scroll-lock', I can read the following message during boot-up.
Starting system log daemon : syslogd
syslogd : cannot create /dev/log : address family not supported by protocol

Upon examining the log files:
/var/log/syslog has only one line as follows: debian syslogd 1.4 #15 restart.XFree86.0.log is as follows:_XSERVTransSocketOpen: socket failed for local..Fatal server error:Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running.

For your info, I was running a 2.6.3 kernel which I made from source.
I had checked that 'Unix domain socket' was selected in the kernel config. I had re-make the kernel.

dpkg --configure -a did not throw up any erroneous packages.
Any suggestions pls reply on-list. Thanks.

syslogd problem

2004-12-02 Thread jack kinnon

HI,

I'm still stuck with this problem.

syslogd : cannot create /dev/log : address family not supported by protocol

The whole system is working only in basic command-line mode. Someone suggested downloading the 'Debian Installer' but that would eat into my monthly subscription volume which I want to reserve for the upgrading to 'sarge'.

Isn't anyone out there that has solved a problem like mine before?

Hi,

I think my syslog problem is more fundamental than I had thought.

When I try to re-build the kernel, I encountered

There are about 10 of these spread through .../drivers/.., .../fs/.. and
../net/atm/..

This is an old problem that I can coming back to. I
have not been able to select a res of 1024x768 for the

problem for sure because I can use it under Win XP.

I am running 'stable'. Could this be the problem?

Let's start from the beginning. If I have a blank cd-rw that I want to use in Linux. Do I have to do any steps before even attempting to mount it?
I had assumed that all I need is to mount it and then do the file copying. Have I missed a step or two, like formatting, for instance?

kernel and kdm problems

2004-05-31 Thread jack kinnon
Hi folks,

I have not been able to communicate for the last half month because my volume-based subscription had reached it's limit (crazily downloading after I got the modem to work).

In additon to the ADSL modem, I have now got my Genius wizardpen tablet working as well, not fully though, it cannot simulate a mouse double-click. In the process of setting these up, I have also introduced some problems.

Problem 1
In working on the tablet, I have to download the xfree86 source files and compile them, no problem here. This is all that is required for the tablet. But since I have the 4.3.1 source and I am currently using 4.1.1, I decided to do an upgrade. I do a 'make install'. This failed. After this, I could not boot up to kdm. The kdm.log indicated a "relocation error".

a. How to deal with the error?
b. Can I upgrade to xfree4.3.1 with the downloaded source files?

Problem2
'make menuconfig' failed with the msg:
'scripts/lxdialog/dialog.h:29: curses.h: no such file or directory'

I remember installing a libNcurses5 package which replaced a libcurses package. I think the two are mutually exclusive. Any suggestion?

no gui

2004-06-04 Thread jack kinnon
Hi folks,

My problem is getting worse. Now I can't go into gui, whether it's xdm or kdm. Before this, IIRC, I did a 'make' instead of 'make World' while building xfree86 4.3.0. Now when I do a 'startx' it would try to go into gui (screen re-sync) but return to command-line mode. When I do a
'startx >& xdm.log' and examine the log, there's no error.

How to have better quality display?

2004-06-06 Thread jack kinnon
Things are back to normal after I do an online-upgrade of kdm. I'm looking into the frills now.

I am using Intel on-board Extreme Graphics. In xserver-xfree86 config, the selections are Vesa for controller and 800x600 for res. This does not give a good quality display. Re:Cannot re-config xfree86

2004-06-12 Thread jack kinnon
Hi folks,

The PC I am having is built from scratch. I buy the Intel 865GBFmotherboard w a 2.6GHz HT CPU, a 256MB single module memory, the storage peripherals, a chassis w a 450W PSU and assemble them up. The BIOS is fr Intel, the original was rev P10 but I had upgraded it to P14 a couple of months back.

The on-board 865G chipset  supports AGP  which uses up to 64MB of the main memory for video RAM. Besides this there's also a 8x AGP slot. The BIOS video config is :

AGP Aperture Size 64MB
Primary Video Adapter AGP
Frame Buffer Size 16MB

I think the /dev/agpgart error and the DRI warning is because I don't have a card on the AGP slot and I have selected the device and DRI in the kernel config.

My desired setting is 1024x768 res with 24-bit color. 64MB video ram should be able to support this, right?

pen-mouse, dual-view

2004-03-07 Thread jack kinnon
hi folks,

A couple of questions.

1. I'm trying to config a system without keyboard or mouse. The idea is to use a pen-mouse with on-screen keyboard. In the Window XP, the pen-mouse and on-screen keyboard can be used from login onwards. But hardware keyboard is still required to interrupt the boot process and then to set-up the boot config. Will Debian GNU/Linux help to overcome this problem?

2. Does Debian GNU/Linux supports multi-view i.e. a system with two or more screens?

Would appreciate some answers.

Thanks.

Thanks for the answers to my previous mail.

Now one on upgrading. I know it's easy to upgrade from 'stable' to 'testing'; what about from 'compact' to 'vanilla' flavor?

Floppyless installation

2004-03-08 Thread jack kinnon

Thanks for the answer on upgrading.

Now I want to do an Internet-based installation of a 'compact' flavor. This, I understand, avoids the use of a stack of floppies. It requires loading some initial files to the hard-disk, execute the correct files and then download more files from the Net. Folllowing instructions from the Debian sites, I had downloaded root.bin, install.bat, linux.bin, drivers.tgz, loadlin.exe.

I edited install.bat so that the files referred in there has the right directory path. When I executed install.bat, in the 'cmd' window of XP, there was "Invalid keyboard code specified" in the beginning, followed by lines about CPU mode and ending with a line that reads "WARNING: Not enough free memory (load buffer size)." My PC has 256MB.

Can someone tell me what's wrong?

installation, Linux source code

2004-03-10 Thread jack kinnon
hi folks,

Thanks for the info on installation. Am considering using the  'minimal CD' option. It still requires 100+ MB of download. Seems rather big. What's in there?

I haven't had a chance to download a Linux source. I know Linux is basically UNIX. C would be the source programming language. Does it's OOP derivative, C++, figure in Linux source code at all?

What's the latest on the SCO claim? Will Linux continue to be free and open? What's chances of that?

I am looking forward to some interesting answers.

Have a nice day.

More on installation

2004-03-11 Thread jack kinnon
Hi folks,

Thanks for the info on installation. I may not need to download any stuff. I have been passed a 'debian-30r1-i386-binary-1' cd-rom with 600+ MB of content.

I start-off installation with a rescue.bin floppy, then the root.bin floppy, then proceed to load the drivers with drivers.tgz on the hard-disk. Next, to 'Install the Base System', I select cd-rom as the medium. Was prompted to 'Please place the first Debian cd-rom in the cd-rom drive.' which I did and then select 'choose from a list of all likely directories'. The response is "couldn't find directory containing basedebs.tar or lists/woody/main/binary-i386/Release.'  Isn't what I have the 'first Debian cd-rom'?  Could it be the format of the medium? The guy who passed me the cd-rom told me he has to do a 'mount -o loop -t iso9660..." to access the content, in Linux. What's your advice, folks? Just download basedeb.tar?

Those replies on the fate of Linux is most interesting indeed. Ye, I support free and open Linux. Give it my 3L salute. Long Live Linux!

more installation stuff

2004-03-12 Thread jack kinnon
hi fiolks,

Got started with the installation and encountered some problems.

1. I'm using a USB 56K modem. Window XP recognised it's port as COM3. In Debian installation, COM3 is /dev/ttyS2. No option for USB port?

2. I'm installation X-Window. I have two video ports, one is PCI S3ViRGE and the other is onboard Intel 82865G AGP. What's the X server driver for the Intel chip?
I try out X-Window with the PCI controller. On boot-up, the screen goes blank and CTRL-ALT-F1 does not bring up the command-line screen. How now?

Would appreciate some answers.

Thanks

installation kde, USB

2004-03-13 Thread jack kinnon
Hi folks,

Got X-Window working. Want to use kde but doesn't know how to start it. It's 'help manual' mentioned about simply replacing 'startx' with 'startkde' in the file .xinitrc. There's a 'xinitrc' file in /etc/X11 but there's no 'startx' in it. Where to look for it?

USB modem is yet to be set-up. Yes, I am using 'compact stable'. The installation option only offers ttyS ports. Is USB not supported?

Whether it's kde or usb, I'm putting them under one thread because they are problems I'm encountering during installation.

My kernel version is 2.2.20. I'm referring to the port options available for modem during pppconfig. I'm keen to get the USB working; I've another device to get connected, a USB writing tablet.

usb broadband modem

2004-03-26 Thread jack kinnon
Hi folks,

I want to upgrade to sid, via network installation. To deal with the download, I have upgraded to broadband service. The USB modem, which comes free with the subscription, is Prolink Hurricane 8000. Just found out from Prolink website this modem does not work with Linux. Hopefully the Linux community have developed a driver for it?

Any pointer?

Upgraidng to 'testing'

2004-04-04 Thread jack kinnon
Hi folks,

Thanks for the link to the broadband modem driver. I was jumping the gun a bit. The driver is not going to help at this stage.

I started off with 'stable' and a dial-up modem. Now I have upgraded to broadband. The idea was to have faster download to assist in upgrading to 'testing'. The trouble is that 'stable' only works with dial-up. INow I have 'stable' and broadband but cannot upgrade to 'testing'.

Any suggestions ?

Upgrading to 'testing'

2004-04-04 Thread jack kinnon

Hi folks,

Thanks for the suggestions. And Kent, point taken. I'll be more explicit on every msg.

First, my current set-up. I have 'stable' with a 2..2.20 kernel. My broadband modem is a Prolink Hurricane 8000 with a USB interface to the computer and a phone link to the wall phone socket. Under Window XP, it is configured for pppoE.

I would like to use this set-up to upgrade from 'stable' to 'testing'; adding more network hardware is not an option.

So, 'stable' does support broadband. It could be the kernel then.
What's the  link to the latest  'stable' kernel version?

Cheers.

Upgrading kernel to 2.4.18

2004-04-13 Thread jack kinnon
Hi folks,

Thanks for the suggestion on the kernel. I could not go online under Linux to download anything until the modem is configured in. I just realise that the cd I have comes with kernel-source-2.4.18. So I carry out the steps for upgrading. Was really glad to discover that it supports ppp on Ethernet eventhough experimental only. I went through menu config, buildpackage etc, everything works fine all the way to the end with any error. But  I could not reboot the system to the new version.

Error msg :
fsck.ext: No such file on the system while trying to open .
the superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem...

There was a suggestion about creating a new superblock but it gives the same error msg when I tried it out.

Any suggestion(s)?

Cheers.

Setting up ADSL USB modem

2004-04-14 Thread jack kinnon
Thanks Pigeon. The mistake was to set the ext2 selection to . I have upgraded to 2.4.18. Am working on the ADSL modem.

Has anyone got the Prolink Hurricane 8000 modem working under Debian? I had downloaded some stuff from Linux.ie "Linux ZyXel 630-11 Modem Setup". The stuff is supposed to work to the Hurricane 8000 too. I followed the instructions but  can't get pass step 5, "pre amedyn compilation", 'make' throw up a lot of errors.

Had anyone tried this before?

kernel upgrading problem

2004-04-23 Thread jack kinnon
Hi folks,

I had successfully upgraded from 2.2.20 to 2.4.18 once. For some reason, I had to clear the system and start from 2.2.20. This time when I tried to upgrade to 2.4.18 again, I encountered the following error when executing 'menuconfig'.

make -C scripts/lxdialog all
/usr/bin/ls: cannot open file crt1.o: no such file or directory

Have I miss out any package(s)?

Hi folks,

I have set up my ADSL modem to work in Linux. I can read mails and surf web. There's a slight problem though. I can't do login from within a site, e.g., login to yahoo mail. A window would pop up with a msg "The protocol https is not supported". I had checked that the kdebase-libs is installed.

I am running stable with kernel-2.6.3 and kde-2.2.2.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

problem in upgrading kernel from 2.4.18 to 2.6.3

2004-05-02 Thread jack kinnon
Hi

Thanks for the reply. I checked through .../Documentation/Changes. The GNU C minimal is 2.95.3. I have 2.95.4. I have higher version than required for 'make', 'binutils', 'util-linux' and 'module-init-tools'.

I cannot do online install under Linux because the modem is not configured for Linux yet. What I am doing now is to download .tar.gz or .deb files to the Window partition, switch to Linux, mount the Win drive and cp over the files. For .tar.gz files I would 'tar' it and then follow the instructions in README and INSTALL. For .deb files, I would do a   'dpkg -i". This method is no good for package like gcc which has a lot of dependencies. Any other way I can do it?

Cheers.

Hi,

kernel-package and libncurses5-dev are there.

What I notice is that whatever that I mark as in the configuraion menu will  give rise to the "Unresolved symbols ..." msg.

Has it got to do with module-init-tools? This is present and of the right version. I run ver_linux to double-check.

Any idea??

re: problem in upgrading kernel from 2.4.18 to 2.6.3

2004-05-03 Thread jack kinnon
Hi

Selecting all the items in Load Module Support doesn't help.

Before the appearance of the "Unresolved symbols ...", the following statement was executed.

if [-r System.map}; then /sbin/depmod -ae -F System.map
-b /usr/src/linux/debian/tmp-image -r 2.6.3; fi

A typical error msg is as follows:

depmod: Unresolved symbols in /usr/src/linux/debian/tmp-image/lib/modules/2.6.3/kernel/drivers/net/xxx.ko

where net/xxx.ko is the network module that I had selected in the config menu.

Does this help?

Cheers

Hi,

I have upgraded fr a dial-up to broadband using a Prolink Hurricane 8000 ADSL modem. I have a write-up which shows me how to get this animal working in Linux, based on the 2.6.3 kernel. So I have to get 2.6.3 working in order to get the modem working and not the other way round. It's worse than a Catch-22 here, isn't it?

kernel upgrading basically ok now

2004-05-06 Thread jack kinnon
HI

The X server  and the syslog problems are fixed by setting "Unix domain socket' in the config menu. This is found by searching Yahoo. The debian search is pretty useless, always 'no match'.

The sytem can boot and come up with kde. A couple of doubts to clear.

1. The ttyS0 error is still around. The full error msg is:

Loading the saved-state of the serial devices...
modprobe: FATAL: error running install command for serial /dev/ttyS0: no such device.

This msg appears only on the screen, not in syslog or kern.log

2. Msg in syslog:
No module symbols loaded - kernel modules not enabled.
There are several questions in Yahoo search on this but no answers.

I am using module-init-tools-3.0.

Would appreciate some answers.

Cheers

re:kernel upgrading basically ok now

Hi Thomas

Thanks for the reply.

For the /dev/ttyS0 error msg, I have checked the config. I have selected 8250/16550.

For the 'kernel modules not enabled' msg, I have definitely selected "Loadable Module.." When I do a 'lsmod', the modules that I had selected in the config menu were listed. Could the msg be a red herring?

Prolink Hurricane 8000 ADSL modem

2004-05-07 Thread jack kinnon
Hi

With the kernel-2.6.3 installed, I am back to working on the ADSL modem.

What I am encountering is a gcc compilation problem. In the process of compiling the file amload.c, there are "undefined reference to" many usb functions followed by the line:

collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

Those usb  functions are defined in a header file usb.h in the /usr/local/include dir. The compilation is done through a Makefile which has the line

INCLUDES = -I../include.

It seems like the /usr/loca/include dir is not search in the compilation process. How to check on this? In the 'man gcc" -Ixxx is supposed to add dir xxx to the list of dirs to be checked. How to know the standard dirs that are being checked?

Cheers
