Re: Re: SATA - How to access disk ???

2007-03-12 Thread ieb
Hi, I'm new to the list (and to Debian) so I'm not too sure of the
protocol here... but I have a related question, so thought I'd tag mine
onto this. (However some groups want all separate questions even if
they repeat very nearly that of another).

I too can't get the boot sequence to read the SATA, but I've determined
that in my case (and possibly the original posters) it's because the
initrd image doesn't contain the driver for the disk.

I am struggling to build the initrd image.

Some background:

I have been a 'user' (rather than technical administrator) of linux for
about 6 years running various flavours of Mandrake - with MNDRK-10 since
it was released on my old PIII-dual processor box.
3 weeks ago I decided to upgrade both my OS and machine. I bought a
brand new fast PC with AMD64 Athlon - 300gig SATA - and onboard NVIDIA
chips, without pausing to think about driver support. With
Mandrake/Mandriva's drive to 'sell' packages and support I decided it
time to dump them. I got the full set of Debian Sarge 3.1r5 [but for
the i386 rather than 64bit AMD] to go with new machine.
Cutting a long story ... couldn't get it to work. Downloaded kernel
that someone else had built with SATA support... it worked but no
graphics (no NVIDIA). Decided to build my own kernel based upon 3.6.8
for 64bit. Compiled for NVIDIA/SATA/AMD-64/etc (NOTE very steep
learning curve - 'in at the deep end' - never done anything similar
before - but seems to have worked).
BUT... still wont boot because can't 'see' the SATA... have rooted
around and detremined that it fails still within the RAMDISK. The image
doesn't contain a device entry for the disk so it can't see it.
Have read 7 different versions of how to create a ramdisk image for the
initrd, but they are all confusing to say the least ... and I can't get
it to work.

Can anyone help with a plain-english 'idiots-guide' for this idiot?

Thanks.
Ian

Re: Re: SATA - How to access disk ???

2007-03-12 Thread ieb

Hi Joe,

I think the posting twice was more of a duoo-moment, than an 'oops'
but anyway back to the question.

You have solved my problem THANKS

Downloaded the image .. burn .. boot ... (allow it to do it's thing) ..
and voila... a system that works. I could have saved myself more than 2
weeks of 'learning curve' if I'd but asked the question in the first
place. (But then I learned more about the way that linux works in the
past 2 weeks than I had in the past 5 years).

I must admit though... I hadn't looked at Debian prior to 3 weeks
ago it has to have the most confusing bunch of documentation I have
come across in a long time. As I wrote initially... I found 7
descriptions as to how to create the RamDisk image; and the best
description actually came from an IBM site rather than Debian itself.

I'm going to enjoy getting to grips with Debian ... I can tell !

Thanks again.

Problems with GRUB and SATA

2007-03-22 Thread ieb
I asked last week about getting Debian to run on my new box.

Joe Hart pointed me in the direction of ETCH rather than the SID I was
trying to use.

Everything worked fin until Saturday switched on and it failed with
an Error 18 at the GRUB.

It took me 8 attempts over the weekend to reinstall to system it
kept failing at the 'Installing Software' stage and wouldn't proceed.
I downloaded the latest installer yesterday- - burnt another dic and
tried again it all seemed to go fine and the system was up and
running again.

I have just switched on the machine - it booted OK - got to Gnome
desktop... and the whole thing froze (reminiscent of the bad old Windoze
days) ... switched it off (couldn't shutdown ... wouldn't take any
inputs) switched back on and I'm back with my Error 18 during GRUB
again

Any sage advice please. I will remind folks that I am not 'that'
technical, so please be gentle with me with I ask stpid questions.

It seems as if I have a hard disk problem but I even went and bought
a new drive at the weekend so this has happened to two separate SATA
drives.

A kinda obvious question but is anyone else having problems with
SATA and ETCH?

I understand that Error 18 is a read attempt beyond 8GB on older
machines. but this is a brand new Motherboard, AND in any event I
always have BOOT in a separate 50meg partition at the front of the disk.

Advice / comments please,

Ian

Re: Slow internet on AMD64 running Etch

2007-03-23 Thread ieb
I have been having all sorts of problems lately in setting up a new box
with an AMD64 and Etch. BUT . slow speed networking aint one of
them in fact I was surprised at how fast it was compared with the
old workhorse machine it will eventually replace.

So ... sorry... but it looks as if it's possibly your configuration.

NVIDIA and Etch : WAS Re: Problems with GRUB and SATA

2007-03-25 Thread ieb
Hello folks,
I'm still puzzling with my build of Etch on this new machine I've
solved the GRUB error 16 and error 18 problems, by disabling the SMART
options in the BIOS and stopping the appropriate services for
smartmon. Everything on that front now appears to be stable ...and I
don't appear to have a faulty disc-controller after all. But I am still
puzzling over the NVIDIA and sound modules. My latest 'problem' is with
NVIDIA. (I'll worry about why ALSA isn't working next).

I have rebuilt the 2.6.18-4-amd64 with the NVIDIA components, have
installed the nvidia-glx module, but whenever I let the
etc/X11/xorg.conf build with the nvidia configuration tool it builds the
'conf' with a declaration for the driver to be nvidia, ...but ... X wont
start then, ... warns me that there is no device for NVIDIA 00:1:3
(and/or if I manually change it to include 00:1:3) 00:13:0, and finally
stops with a grumble about the kernel kicking out an error 11.
BUT, ... if I change xorg.conf to use the driver nv (rather than nvidia)
X (gdm) will start, does have the higher resolution set (1600x1200), but
has a significant 'pink' colour cast. I can't find a configuration tool
for the nvidia settings (such as Gamma etc).

Question please... should the driver be 'nvidia' or 'nv', (if 'nvidia'
- any suggestions as to what I am missing?) ... if it's should be 'nv'
in any event .. then can someone help me find the settings for this to
get the colours to be accurately displayed?

Thanks again folks,

Ian

mySQL and 'testing'

2007-10-26 Thread ieb
Sorry if this repeats a previous query I did scan the list of topics
but couldn't spot this.

I am running the 'testing' version. I came back from 3 weeks offline
and simply let synaptic gather all the updates and apply them (OK.. yes
, that was probably a bit dumb... but too late now)...
Everything seemed to go ok until I went to log in to mySQL. and it cant
find the socket. I tried to update the files using the mysql-client and
mysql-server, and although the client ran OK the server complains about
an unspecified dependency error and a corrupt server file.

Has anyone else come across this, or should I start panicking now?
Thanks
Ian

Hi Jeff, sorry for the delay in responding

>Are the errors with the server reported through synaptic or when you
>try to start the server?

Both.

It began with me firing up mysql-navigator... it started OK and showed
the option to connect to the localhost - but when I tried to connect to
the db it reported:

Cannot connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'[2]

So I, somewhat simplistically, presumed that one of the many dozens of
updates that ran after my period away from my desk had screwed-up MySQL.
Because this is a relatively new machine with only small volumes of
data in the databases (which I could reconstruct if 'push came to
shove') I decided to simply reinstall MySQL.

The client seems to install OK using Synaptic but when it gets to the
server Synaptic baulks and reports :-

E:mysql-server-5.0: sub-process post-installation script returned error
exit status 1
E: mysql server: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

My biggest problem is that I am still unfamiliar with where all the logs
and programmes are maintained/held in Linux, so my investigations tend
to consist of repeatedly lurching from one wild idea to the next in the
forlorn hope of gathering a clue as to the root of the problem (rather
than having the detail knowledge necessary for any systematic probing
and fault identification). Therefore any help/advice is gratefully
received.

Ian

Re: mySQL and 'testing'

2007-10-27 Thread ieb
'Problem' has been solved.

The clue was in 'syslog' it recorded that MySQl had been unable
to open the directory "/home////Database" because it was too
full.

Now with a 500gig drive in this box and 250gig on my 'home' directory
and only 7% used it couldn't possibly be 'too full'.
On taking a look I spotted that somehow the directory (and all it's
siblings at that same level) were no longer made up of titles that began
with a single upper case and the rest in lower case .. but were all
upper case (viz --- Database was now DATABASE)
renamed it back to the original and reran the installation through
synaptic, ... and it ran flawlessly and my data is still intact.

I am being verbose in my explanation in case anyone else comes across a
similar issue.
Why the directories at that level (seven of them) became renamed to all
upper case is the bigger mystery but as the original problem has
been 'cured' my plea for assistance has been fulfilled. Thanks folks.

I ted using NVidia with my new box when I first set it up a couple of
months back (using 'testing').I never did get it to work reliably
even with the help of many folks from this list.

I eventually ditched it after having wasted more than 2 weeks of effort
and much frustration.

So, my advice would be don't waste your time with it.
