printer won't stop

2004-10-13 Thread dougpol1
Hi all,
I am using Debian 2.6 Sarge. In KDE I clicked on
system, printers using foomatic-gui I installeda Canon BJC
4400 printer. After installation I clicked 'print test
page'.
My printer printed about 20 pages of cod and data. I can't
figure out how to end it. I have shut it down for now
using pause printer. I have a print job called Star office
Job #1 size 146 k. I could let it print itself out but I
would like to know how to take out this a print job to
stop it for future reference.
Thanks Doug

importing files on CD

2004-07-20 Thread Dougpol1
HI Folks,
I am using Debian 3.0r2 Woody on a dual boot system along with
windows. I am am new to Linux but have managed to partitioned and
installed successfully. I need to bring over my files from windows by
way of CD. In Gnome I've learned to mount them but don't understand how
to import them into Home where I assume they need to be for me to
continue working on them in ABI word or another word processor. I know
this has got to be simple but one way or another I have made a major
project out of it. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Getting up and running

2004-08-10 Thread Dougpol1
Hello all,
So that you understand where I'm coming from, here is a rundown on
what I'm trying to do. First of all I am a retired machinist. I have
invented a couple of products that I would like to manufacture in my
home workshop and sell on line.I plan to make these products on
machines that I am presently building. They will be cnc machines run off
of a PC. I don't consider Ms Windows stable enough to be used for that
purpose. That leaves real time Linux or dos. It makes no sense to use
dos as it seems a dead end street as far as improvement is concerned. I
have not used dos so, I would have to learn it and would much rather
spend my time learning Linux.
At the present time, I am getting patents, designing my product and
building machines to manufacture on, at the same time trying to set up
and run Linux. Keep in mind I am 70 years old so learning comes much
slower these days. I have installed Debian 3.0r2 ,and have been
struggling on a now and then basis to get it up and running. I don't
have enough time to devote to learn how to configure and get everything
operating so that I can install Qcad and a CAM program and start working
entirely in Linux. I really don't want to have to use Windows. I have
seen machines running on Windows, repeatedly for no apparent reason,
take off and slam into fixtures or tables doing great damage and wasting
hours or even days of set up time.
!. My questions are, would Fedora or some other program, after
installed, be more operational than Debian leaving me less to learn in
order to start to work?
   2. Would some one with lots of patience be willing to take me under
their wing on a one on one basis and help me get up and running. Know
this, I'm not exactly dumb in all areas but for example I have been
using Windows about 5 years and have not touched Dos so my computer
knowledge is really shallow.

Any advise or help will be greatly appreciated,

Doug

New address

2004-08-24 Thread dougpol1
Well here we are again. My last e-mail sever was trying my patience. Every time I
tried to down load a file of any size it timed out. So I decided to bite the bullet
and go the cable route. So here is the new address.

partition second hard drive

2004-09-25 Thread dougpol1
Hello all,
I had a dual boot system with Windows and Linux
installed. Bought a new cd writer and found out I had to
upgrade win 98 to SE to use new software for writer. SE
costs more than the writer did. Nuts to microsoft.
Took Windows out and installed Debian Sarge with
the new installer. I really am happy with it.
My question is How do I reformat my second hard
drive that is presently Fat 32 windows so that Linux can
use it for backup. I tried cfdisk but linux cannot see the
drive. I have a Maxtor cd for the drive, which is Maxtor,
but there is no Linux formating available on it. I sent
them an e-mail asking why not.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Doug
