You can upgrade your way up to sid the same way you upgrade each
release, to squeeze, then sid. Google is full of information. Or for a
fresh install you can directly install sid via debootstrap.

Leave off the -t ext4 and it should mount, though as ext4dev. Or use
-t ext4dev.

There are some known bugs with the kernel you're using, hence all of
the recommendations for newer kernels (that also switch from ext4dev
to ext4).

However, if you just want to play with it, you could do that.

Personally, I have about 4TB in ext4dev, but it's all stuff that, if I
lost it, I'd be annoyed, but not loose anything important.

mrc

I built a system with ext4 about a month ago. I had some massive
fragmentation after moving data back to the system. I ended up making a
huge mistake with some permissions requiring a reinstall and have since
walked away from ext4. It was a Sid/2.6.30.1

You might want to take a look at the kernel wiki. Seems there are some
known problems at the moment with Debian.

http://ext4.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Ext4_Howto

###

For people who are running Debian

In Debian Lenny (Testing), the following current packages provide ext4
support:

* ext4dev module in the linux-image package (2.6.26-10)
* e2fsprogs (1.41.3-1)

It should be noted that the stock 2.6.26 ext4 has problems with delayed
allocation and with filesystems with non-extent based files. So until
Debian starts shipping a 2.6.27 based kernel or a 2.6.26 kernel with at
least the 2.6.26-ext4-7 patchset, you should mount ext4dev filesystems
using -o nodelalloc and only use freshly created filesystems using
"mke2fs -t ext4dev". (Without these fixes, if you try to use an ext3
filesystem which was converted using "tune2fs -E test_fs -o extents
/dev/DEV", you will probably hit a kernel BUG the moment you try to
delete or truncate an old non-extent based file.)

This sounds like a fun way to meet debootstrap. [1] Hopefully you have a
partition around you can play with. I've read about destroying swap to
get things going. Then once you have a very basic Debian system up and
running, reclaim the rest of the disk.

Assuming you're running stable and want durep from old stable you can fetch
the package [1], and dpkg -i install it. Or to complicate things, you can add
old stable to your sources.list, make an appropriate /etc/apt/preferences
entry for the package, and used aptitude -t etch install durep.

I send my mails through gmane. Only requiring an email account to verify
before sending is allowed. (Gmail in my case) This benefits me in a few
ways.

- never see the random off list requests
- spam from my address being plucked out of the archives is zero
- easy searching my now 'local' archive (363,177 headers

currently trim dates as you'd like
- default replying to the list only

I have yet to hear of any complaints on how gmane handles mails. Any known?

I think shutdown had to do with gnome-power-manager. All seems well now.

However, this being a users list, I think that a majority of opinions or

I don't pay close attention to what is in the repos, but I don't recall
seeing an odd numbered packaged by the Debian kernel team. I could be
wrong though. The references to 2.6.31.4 are referring to the current
stable linux kernel available at http://www.kernel.org/ . The latest
message I read from the Kernel Team indicated 2.6.32 would be included
in Squeeze.¹ So obviously Sid will see that before it enters Squeeze.

Compiling your own is not very difficult.² Have a look at the package
'kernel-package' and read over it's documentation. Of course google
seems to know everything.

Double check that you have identified what your wireless interface is in

Sounds like you are left with physically removing the hdd. Of course you
could try to /wish/ the OS to appear. :)

You had mentioned the screws were threaded. I think you meant to say
stripped. If that is the case you can simply use screw extractor. They
come in various sizes. Basically a somewhat blunt drill bit with the
biting edge oriented for counter clockwise application. Depending on the
head of the screw's size it might be beneficial to start a pilot.
However, I doubt there is rust/corrosion involved and more than likely
the bit biting on the current tool marks would probably do the deed.

Another trick you might want to try.. Invert a can of compressed air
typically used for cleaning keyboards and such. Spray each screw head
directly in several small bursts with the objective of chilling them as
much as possible. If the small straw that comes with most is still
around, it would greatly help. Take special care as the plastic encasing
the screws may become brittle. Then try using a decent knife point as a
screwdriver.

YMMV.

Good luck.

I think this is where you went wrong. I personally would have choose to
a debootstrap install from within slackware. There are number of ways to
come up with a partition.. ie using swap, resizing something etc. Also
going this route you could have continued with a dual boot setup until
you were sure Debian was up and running properly. If space only
permitted a standard bare bones system, you'd have access to the core
utilities to manipulate things. But we're past that now. :)

Perhaps the local library would have old enough machines to write
floppies? Is there a LUG nearby that could write floppies for you?

I wish I had a better answer for you. But in my experience with the
3965/4965 the device is always visible. Yet it won't be usable without
the firmware. As a matter of fact, the installer will even prompt you to
load the additional firmware via removable media, but as of Lenny it
would fail and is a known bug. Supposedly it will be worked out by squeeze.

However, once you have the firmware installed you should have no
additional problems connecting. Aside from g-n-m quirks that may develop.

It's a physical switch on the laptop. Everyone does it differently. On
my T61 it's on the left front. Somewhat looks like a lid latch release.
On a Toshiba I had it was also on the left front, but much smaller. What
is the make/model of the laptop in question?

Sliding a bit off topic, but I also ride everywhere. My Timbuk2
messenger bag rocks. Rain/waterproof if closed properly, and the pad for
the laptop is nearly .5 inch/ 1.27 centimeters thick. There are a few
picture floating around showing what they look like surviving a few good
wipe-outs. The only side that isn't protected would be the top where it
slides in, and this being against my back, would make it difficult to
damage.

But I also like a lot of the ideas being passed around.

Because mutt allows you to choose your editor, and most if not all show
line counts by default, it's trivial to see the amount of lines quoted.
Some packages will even clean it all up for you and show how many lines
were hidden because of excessive quoting.

Out of curiosity I extracted unique email address from ubuntu-users.mbox
available from their archive site. The archive starts 15 Sep 2004, and I
found 10,809 unique address give or take a few my patterns missed.

I'm sure their current subscription is not that high, and I was not able
to find a mbox for debian-user ( a good thing ) to see what debian had
over the same time period for comparison.

Be warned if you have a separate /boot you will be burned by #558042.
grub-pc is broken at the moment.

That actually seem rather low for a week.

No not at all. Treat it as any other volume and simply extend it.

I need to do nothing special. However, I also enabled the option of
automatically mounting removable media, and Lenny simply treated it as such.
