I use an ATI 9700 Pro. Occasional freezing / need help diagnosing
Title: Occasional freezing / need help diagnosing Occasionally Debian just locks up. The same box has WinXP and SuSE 9.1 and Debian Sid. Each OS has its own hard drive. I have not experienced any locking up with the other two OSs. I've looked in the logs in /var/logs but can't find anything that seems significant. Can anyone give me some tips on troubleshooting something like this? I'm really trying to decide between SuSE and Debian. I really like some things about Debian, but if I can't stop the freezing, I'll have no choice but to go back to SuSE.
RE: Occasional freezing / need help diagnosing
The box is connected to a cable modem and no other network. The freezes have never occurred when using the web browser or email, but with a variety of other programs, such as synaptic, mplayer, kwrite. Last night, the flying toaster screensaver was running when I went to bed, but had frozen during the night. > -Original Message- > From: Kamaraju Kusumanchi [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Tuesday, July 13, 2004 12:02 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: Occasional freezing / need help diagnosing > > > Scott Thompson wrote: > > Occasionally Debian just locks up. Add me to the list. I have a Nforce2 chipset and ATI 9700 Pro card with Sid installation. I get the same problem. RE: Debian crashes
I had similar problems a week or so ago. It wasn't limited to Firefox, sometimes it was doing a file search, sometimes it was with the screensaver running, it would just happen off and on. When it did, I could not SSH into the machine or switch out of X or anything. I was using kernel 2.6.6-1-i686 on an AMD Athlon. I upgraded using apt to the 2.6.7-1-k7 kernel and the problem went away. I changed nothing else on the machine. It's been running for over a week now without a single hiccup. Before, it crashed 3 or 4 times a day. Don't know if that info will help at all. > -Original Message- > From: Alexandros Papadopoulos [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Monday, July 26, 2004 4:38 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: Debian crashes > > > On Monday 26 July 2004 23:49, Tim Raats wrote: > > Alexandros Papadopoulos wrote: > > >On Monday 26 July 2004 21:32, Tim Raats wrote: > > >>Debian crashes on the strangest moments. Any chance of Debian adding YaST
I have both Debian and SuSE installed on my computer. The one thing I really like about SuSE are the YaST components related to hardware setup (not the components related to software installation). YaST has some very simple and easy tools to set up firewalls, edit and reload bootloaders, make boot disks, setup cdrom and hard drive options, networking, scanners, printers, etc. While all of these things can be done by hand through a command line, it's really nice to be able to quickly see what hardware is installed, how its set up and what options there are all from a centralized location. I read recently that Novell has moved YaST to a GPL license. Does anyone know if there are any official or third party plans to develop a version for Debian. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? RE: Any chance of Debian adding YaST
<> Look,I'm not saying the YaST is great or perfect. But, I've tried 8 or 10 different distros, and the one thing that many do better that Debian is manage and configure hardware from a central location. Whether it's Mandrake's HardDrake or Redhat/Fedora's Kudzu or Ark Linux's Mission Control, etc., sometimes it's nice to have a central, handy hardware config system. Debian has everyone beat in package management and would be the hands-down greatest distro on earth if it handled hardware a little better. I've used YaST in SuSE 9.0 and 9.1 and as far as hardware configuration, it has worked pretty well. As far as software installation and configuration, it sucks. I use apt4rpm on my SuSE installation instead of YaST. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: OT: Judicial election/appointment (was Re: Is Linux Unix?)
I'm an Oklahoma lawyer. In Oklahoma, state district court judges are elected in non-partisan elections. They then appoint special judges who handle things like small claims and criminal preliminary hearings. Judges for the Civil Court of Appeals, the Court of Criminal Appeals and the Oklahoma Supreme Court are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. The Governor must appoint from a list of 3 candidates provided by a judicial nominating commission made up of members appointed in equal number by the Governor, the Senate Pro Tempore and the Speaker of the House. All of the appointed judges serve staggered terms and in every election a significant number of them appear on what's called a retention ballot. That ballot says something like "Shall Judge Joe Smith serve another term as a Justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court." The choices are yes or no. In the federal context, there are federal district courts, the Circuit Courts of Appeal and the Supreme Court. At the district court level there are probably more than a thousand district judges and magistrate judges. There are lots of vacancies, because the appointment process can never keep up. All appointments made by the President must be confirmed by the Senate. That technically requires only a majority vote, however, some of Bush's more controversial nominees have been held up by filibuster, which takes 60 votes to break. Bush has still had well over a hundred judges confirmed. He has only had a few Circuit appointments so far and no Supreme Court appointments. So, at this point, Bush's overall effect on the federal judiciary has been minimal. Another Bush term, however, could see as many as two Supreme Court vacancies. Filling those vacancies could radically alter the fundamental balance of power on the Court which could have powerful ramifications throughout the country. > -Original Message- > From: Bob Underwood [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Friday, July 30, 2004 6:11 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: OT: Judicial election/appointment (was Re: Is > Linux Unix?) > > > On Sunday 25 July 2004 11:16 pm, Karsten M. RE: How Do I Get the Java Plugin To Work with Firefox and Mozilla ?
It took me about 5 minutes to get java working. Go to the Sun website, click on download J2SE JRE and download the self-executing binary for linux. http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html Create new directory under /usr called java. Copy the .bin file to /usr/java and execute it. (chmod +x [filename]) then (./[filename]) After agreeing to the license, it will unpack its files. In a terminal, go to your firefox/plugins directory and remove or rename any file called libjavaplugin_oji.so and then type: ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_05/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so That's it. Start up firefox and check about:plugins. It should show the java. Worked for me anyway. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? How to add new Windows Manager to KDM?
I want to add a new entry to the Session Types menu in kdm. Everything I could find says either edit the SessionTypes entry in kdmrc or add a session through the KDE Control Panel. Kernel 2.6.8 changes hard drives
I have Debian installed on a drive attached to an ATA controller. I also have a CD-RW and DVD-RW attached to those controllers. These drives were recognized as hda, hdb and hdc. I also had two hard drives attached to SATA controllers. These drives were recognized as hdd and hde. After moving to kernel 2.6.8 from 2.6.7, the SATA drives are recognized as sda and sdb. I corrected the fstab entries and now they both seem to mount and work fine. Any idea why this occurred? Is it something changed in the 2.6.8 kernel or a problem with my setup? I've had the same problem, but is hasn't really been any issue since my SATA drive is for storage and not accessed that often, but isn't there a solution short of recompiling the kernel?
