Re: Cloning a workstation
Dave Ewart wrote: Partimage certainly works very well. You can create a bootable CD which (assuming your image fits on a CD) you can use to install your image. If the image is larger, you can use it across the network. Run partimage daemon on one box, then boot up your unconfigured box(es) with, say, Knoppix; the run partimage and it'll pull in the image. Use it all the time here, imaging Windows boxes and Debian workstations. Does it save the mbr as well so you don't have to repair grub after imaging? weird time problem
Bran new machine. I'll try to describe the problem with the time. The logs are not helpfull because I cannot determine what happens first, the time going back to 1901 or 1938 (it differs) Or Courier imap screaming the .Maildir doesn't exit (which it clearly does) or it doesn't have permission. In any event, I tend to believe the problem is the time and that's what makes courier barf. The fix? Weird as hell, simply reboot the machine. sarge install grub problem
Have a buddy that just called. He's having trouble getting debian testing installed. On first reboot, He gets no grub screen at all, the system simply reboots. As I recall, he has a epox board with onboard raid and the hard drive is hooked to the raid port. (He's a combo cd and a regular cd-rom hooked to the ide ports.) Ideas? BTW, I suggested putting the drive on the regular ide port, but he'd like to keep both cd's on separate ide ports... Top posting leads to a big mess. Every non-technical person does it and it ends up with them saying "let's use a forum or something" because they can't follow the thread any longer. Surprise surprise, a forum works with bottom posting and everybody seems to find that normal. I run a list for techs/consultants. (ChannelVar.com) They are a VERY qualified bunch of guys. I checked my auth log file to find many, many attempts to break in. My firewall was very simple. I have since added rules to drop packets from offending IP addresses. So, I have a couple of very basic questions: 1. Are there repositories of offending IP addresses to block? Can/should one contribute to these? 2. The attacks never use the same user name more than once. Is there a way to block access, even temporarily, from an IP address after a set number of attempts, even if the attempts use different user names? 3. Are there other obvious things I should be doing? ssh, by it's design is insecure. It SHOULD incorporate some means of limiting password attempts. It does not! Using alternate ports can be a pain in the butt as some programs (like webmin "filesystem backup) do not support alternate ports. I suggest 2 methods, fail2ban and a firewall if you must allow password logins. You can set the firewall to allow only certain ip's or ip ranges. But do not get to comfortable with a firewall ONLY solution. The first time the local firewall goes down, or is taken down and forgotten to re-enable, you'll get compromised. Again, the best solution would be for ssh to incorporate a solution, thus if ssh is started, the solution is started... -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by RCRnet, and is believed to be clean.

Re: Moving a Debian install in to new hardware?
I like norton ghost, then fix grub in the mbr because ghost will likely break it. After ghosting.. Boot with mepis (Any live-cd would probably do) Open a terminal window Mounted the drive (don't use the mepis icon as it mounts read only) mount -rw /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1 chroot /mnt/hda1 grub-install /dev/hda Note your partitions may differ IE /dev/hda2 etc... Works like a charm.. Note, grub wants the "drive" to install to. Not the partition. Tony Godshall wrote: >According to Jimmy Liang, > > >>Hi All, >> >>I'm in need of some hints here. move debian to another machine
Am about to move a mail server to another machine. The new machine has scsi raid. The default kernel supports the raid. Yeah! :) I also would like to keep the compaq diagnostic partition on the new server. I know ghost would wipe this out. I'm also aware, grub will be a problem as everything will now be /dev/sda rather than /dev/hda so I'm looking for thoughts on the easiest way to handle this. change from ide to scsi drive keep system
I've seen asked before and googling does not help. Here's how I just switched over a server from ide to a compag dl380 with smart array 3200 scsi card. Install base system on target machine. Install webmin On running server, install webmin. go to system/file-system backup make a backup to the local machine in /backup include these directorys /etc /var /usr /root /home /sbin In "Backup to file or tape device" I put /backup/backup In "extra command line perimeters" I put --exclude=/etc/fstab --exclude=/etc/network When done, fish or scp the file to the target machine to a directory called /backup example scp line scp (source) destination scp [EMAIL PROTECTED]:\backup\backup /backup/ Now on the target machine open webmin go to system/filesystem backup - choose restore In "file or tape device" put /backup/backup restore file permissions = yes Then restore and reboot the machine... ** Now then, folks may tell you, you don't need things like sbin or maybe /var/spool. Courier imap complained about sbin and postfix complained about spool.. There has to be better ways of doing this, but this is what FINALLY worked for me. Debian install fixes
I like to post things, hoping they'll come up for someone in a google search. Here's the current "fixes" while trying to install debian. #Good lord, no-one has public key's. Here's the fix wget http://ftp-master.debian.org/ziyi_key_2006.asc /usr/bin/apt-key add /path/to/file/ziyi_key_2006.asc Installed sarge, immediately tried to dist-upgrade. Yeah, wipe wipe. udev screwed the pooch. On the next load, right after sarge load, apt-get install linux-image-2.6-686 This will get you a current enough kernel, then when you dist-upgrade, you don't get caught in a udev loop. Using the 2.6-686 is a meta package which will always keep you on the kernel bleeding edge.. (Someone really needs to fix this.) I don't think it "impress's" the newbies looking over your shoulder... :) Next, nvidia card won't go. It's a new fx-5500 256mg. Answer, pull the silly thing out and put in a lesser card. Who wants to mess with compiling kernels every time they do a upgrade... As usual. Suggestings are welcome. dependency hell dist-upgrade the "right way"
Since, lately, I've had a coupla systems give he all kinds of hell. I'm curious if you guys have some hints to do a fresh install the "right" way? Including upgrading to unstable or testing. Both end up in kde dependency hell. Installing sarge choosing no packages, then dist-upgrading, then install kde doesn't work. Why? kde dependency hell. Looking for info on a driver for an Intel Intelligent Pro adapter. 687231-006 I find the adapter on intel's site here. http://www.intel.com/support/network/sb/cs-012904.htm but I see no linux drivers. debian based compatible distros
Am looking for suggestions of debian 100% compatible distro's. I see one for the desktop called Zen. I am also looking for a distro for a gateway which would include standard gateway stuff like dhcp, squid, firewall etc. I'd like them to be upgradeable using standard debian sources. I guess they should be called, pre-tweaked debian distros.. :) Suggestions? -- Highest Regards, Rodney Richison RCR Computing http://www.rcrnet.net 118 N. rack servers debian friendly
Having found the Netserver LPr to be not so debian friendly, I'm looking to buy a coupla used 600mhz 2u units that are more friendly. I'd like to be able to load mepis up in case of emergency etc, though the unit's will have debian sarge installed. I'd like suggestions on which brand may be more friendly to debian? IBM, dell? or what? Or should I just resign myself to keep "rolling my own" :) -- Highest Regards, Rodney Richison RCR Computing http://www.rcrnet.net 118 N. I had a little problem with my LPr too - but once you know how to get the hardware recognised it works fine! I FINALLY figured out to do an Alt+F2 at install before partitioning and "modprobe megaraid" so at least the system will install now. However, the network cards are whipping my butt. :) Or should I just resign myself to keep "rolling my own" :) That's fine if you can get the parts nice'n'cheap - I paid about £50.00 for the DL380 (2 x 733PIII, 1GB Ram), and about the same for the Proliant 1850r's (2 x 550PII, 1GB Ram) - you'd be hard pushed to build something comparable for that sort of money, especially comsidering the Proliants are all "proper" server architecture.. That's what got me started. ha So you have a clue on the Intelligent Pro 10/100 network card that comes with this beast? I tried modprobe e100 and modprobe eepro100 still can not recognize it. -- Highest Regards, Rodney Richison RCR Computing PO Box 566 - 118 N. move from ide to scsi
Am attemping to move from an ide drive to a scsi drive. Before moving I did modprobe megaraid. Then after ghosting I fixed grub. Now I get this right after it appeas to be looking for ide stuff. I edited fstab to be sda rather than hda 426:cannot open /dev/console: No such file Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Re: netserver lpr debian nightmare
Another slot probably won't help... unless it is some kind of IRQ conflict or a bad slot. Have you tried manually configuring from the command line rather than using some GUI tool? ie. using ifconfig? Ok, for now, I've said the heck with that card. Though, I'll have to get back to it later.. Using a single intel nic, it boots just fine now. Sooo, I've one last question. Since I could not get past the root_pivot error on an upgrade, is there anything else that needs to be copied from this test machine to the other machines to insert the 2.6 kernel other than /boot and probably /lib/modules? Mondo sure helps on this sort of thing. :) -- Highest Regards, Rodney Richison RCR Computing http://www.rcrnet.net 118 N. bash script
Am trying to automate some stuff for future installs. I'd like to echo multiple lines to the end of a file. Like this echo '. /etc/bash_completion' >> ~/.bashrc But I'd like to add multiple lines at one time. Like the ones below. I realize I could cat them in from a text file, but I'd like to make this script non-dependant of other text files. export LS_OPTIONS='--color=auto' eval `dircolors` alias ls='ls $LS_OPTIONS -F' alias ll='ls $LS_OPTIONS -l' alias l='ls $LS_OPTIONS -lA' -- Highest Regards, Rodney Richison RCR Computing http://www.rcrnet.net 118 N. I.e., to append the above lines to 'somefile', you could write cat >>somefile <<"ENDOFQUOTE" export LS_OPTIONS='--color=auto' eval `dircolors` alias ls='ls $LS_OPTIONS -F' alias ll='ls $LS_OPTIONS -l' alias l='ls $LS_OPTIONS -lA' ENDOFQUOTE See the section "Here Documents" in the bash manpage for details (such as parameter expansion within the quoted text, etc.). backup plan bare metal
Would be interested in seeing what some of you use for a backup plan. Mainly for servers. Tar? Easy/quick way to restore bare metal? Rsync? Can it do bare metal? what about hard links? fstab mount at boot
I've got an odd problems with a second ide drive. It will not mount at boot. Though I can mount -a and it mounts just fine. My current fstab is /dev/hdg1 /mnt/data ext3 suid, dev, exec 0 0 Though I've tried /dev/hdg1 /mnt/data ext3 defaults 1 2 and all I get for my trouble is fsck gets stuck at boot and makes you hit control+d to continue. The machine is a proliant dl380 with a ide controller card hooked to a 250g wd hard drive. Running sarge. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Apparently, the system is not ready to see the drive at the time fstab would like to mount it -- Highest Regards, Rodney Richison RCR Computing http://www.rcrnet.net 118 N. You don't explain which features of windows remote desktop are problematic; personally, having very recently tried both VNC and remote desktop, I'd say the latter performed much better. Or are you after something for remot maintenance, scripting, etc? Opps, I'll explain, It'd be nice to be able to drag and drop etc. But the what I REALLY need is to possible login as admin and work in the background while not disturbing the user. This way I can SSH into any of my machines at home or at work and then fire up a VNC connection to that machine if I need graphical control. What exactly do you need the repeater for? Customer support type stuff. Have customer download the support.exe, run it, it will hit the repeater and my viewer will hit the repeater, thus getting around any firewalls on either side.
