Help: problem with booting from HD
Hi all, I am new to Linux. after studied various different distributions I decided to go with Debian. Having spent two days playing with it, now I have to ask for help :( I just bought a PC and download the 6 disks for base systems (rescue, devie, and base14-1 thru base14-4) and made two copies while I still have Windows95 on the hard drive. and did the base system install according to the install guide on the web. when I was doing the install i used cfdisk to partition the hard drive. i made four primary partition (500mb for linux native, 500mb for linux native, 64mb for linux swap, and 900somethinb mb for DOS-32 bit) and marked all but the linux swap as bootable. Install went thru without problem. Now the problem is I can't boot from the hard drive. I can boot from the custom boot floopy without problem, and log in as root, etc, and /dev/hda is already mounted at that point. I did du and see that the install used about 15MB, which i assume is correct. if i do shutdown, and reset the pc or turn off and back on the pc, it will produce various kinds of errors. most of the time it will get as far as "lilo, uncompress linux" and give me a "crc error -- system halt" and at that point I can't even alt-ctrl-del. at one point i got so frustrated, and just turned off the machine, and the next morning turned it back on. miraculously it booted from the hard drive. and I tried shutdown then the same thing happened, and I had to boot from the floppy. after that I did a couple of reinstalls and partitions of the hard disk (with linux partitons only), and got the same system halt error. now things got so screwed up, I don't even see the lilo prompt, it only gives me a "1fa:" error I read all the faqs and how-tos I can get and couldn't figure out the problem. any idea/suggestions will be greatly appreciated. ps: I can't get back to windows95 either. I can boot from a windows boot disk and get to see the a: prompt, but the setup program won't run because it won't recognize the hard drive. I read all 4 how-tos on having both linux and windows partitions on the same disk, but am still confused. also, is lilo automatically installed in the base-system debian install? thank you again for any suggestion. If you have any suggestion please cc me as well. -- Ray Zhang ~{UESjLo~} [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.cnd.org/HYPLAN/ray/ -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Re: Help: problem with booting from HD
Thank you for the suggestion. this is what I got so far. I repartitioned the disk with a 500mb primary partition for DOS (06) (some of my pc friends insisted I put DOS as the first one :-), forllowed with two 300mb primary linux partitions, and a 64mb logical linux swap, and 3 or 4 logical partitions. i installed Win95 first. ( after all the time wasted, I finally figured out Win95 install chews up the MBR), and then installed BC (bc /i 3), which worked great. I could select different boot partition without problem. Then I installed Linux from 6 floppies into the 2nd partition, and make the hard disk bootable (I suppose that made LILO installed onto the 2nd partiton) but didn't touch the MBR. When I restart, first I got to see the BC, and select the Debian (2nd) partition, and saw "LILO Loading Linux Uncompressing Linux..." "crc error System halted" and it just died there. btw, can someone explain to me this error. I am really a newbie. I could boot from the custom boot floopy without problem. here is the /etc/lilo.conf I can't think of a way to attach the file, so I am typing it in. -- boot=/dev/hda2 root=/dev/hda2 compact install=/boot/boot.b map=/boot/map vga=normal delay=20 image=/vmlinuz label=Linux read-only -- /vmlinuz points at /boot/vmlinuz-2.0.27, which is there. Also I was trying to use dselect to do the install from Yggdrasil Winter 97 CD collection's Debian 1.1 i386 distribution. dselect asked me to "enter the block device name" what I suppose to enter. also, I read some where that i can mount the CD with command like mount -r -t iso9660 /dev/sonycd_31a /mnt but sonycd_31a is not there. Is there any other device I can use? I will probably have a lot more questions to come :-) please also cc the reply to me. thank you. -- Ray Zhang ~{UESjLo~} [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.cnd.org/HYPLAN/ray/ -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . well i have been having this problem for 1 year. the computer will only install windows and not linux ,macintosh?this image contains a linux kernel-i think which reconfigures the boot setup. i have partially erased this RAMDISK image but will apreciate any suggestions as many files are write-protected i can only run linux from a live cd but not install it onto HDD.I have brought this matter to attn of MICROSOFT,DELL and McAfee and they all think i am nuts
Linux and Win2k Servers
Greetings, I'm teaching in a mission school in Niger and I've inherited an LAN of 12 of win98/win2k machines, in a network with a win2k server taking the DNS, DHCP and log on chores and some file serving. To this mix I would like to add a couple of linux machines to serve web pages and perhaps do some modem sharing between some of the win machines. By doing this, I will also be exposing some sixty students to Linux and the rest of the staff and administration of the school as well. Having only used linux on a peer to peer networking situations I need some guidence as to how to get the Linux box to get DNS and DHCP services from the win2k server. The machine in questions will be 75-100MHz Pentiums with 32-48 MB Ram.no X GUI Specifically I need to know: 1 >> What things (/etc files? config files?) do I need to change to get the IP address for the linux boxes from the win2k server? Is there some client I need to have running? 2>> How do I get the DNS information automatically from the win2k server instead of having to put it in /etc/hosts? 3>> When this is done, will logging on to the linux box also give me access to my network resources on the win2k server? (assuming a working samba config) Thanks to any who can help. Obviously linux support here is limited, so I'm grateful for any guidence. Randal Potratz SIM Niger

Rather than booting from a floppy and then changing things it is easiest just to edit fstab to switch mount points for the old and new trees of which ever directory tree /usr, /home etc. that you are moving. I have done it twice now and it worked beautifully. I did not move the root of the filesystem though, that's still on the original drive. LILO 21.5-1 beta, LILO 21.4.32
Hi, I just upgraded to woody (apt-get dist-upgrade) which worked extremely well except for lilo. The lilo 21.4.32 package contains lilo 21.5-1 beta. Further, when I run Lilo (I compiled a 2.4 kernel) I get the following: LILO version 21.5-1 beta, Copyright (C) 1992-1998 Werner Almesberger 'lba32' extensions Copyright (C) 1999,2999 John Coffman Reading boot sector from /dev/hda Merging with /boot/cboot.b Fatal: First boot sector is version 20.0. Expecting version 21.5. I downloaded the potato package and it has the same lilo version I then downloaded the source for the package and compiled it. The source package has version 21.4.32, and I compiled that and with that version of LILO get: Fatal: First boot sector is version 20.0. Expecting version 21.4 >From what I can tell the problem is with the cboot.b file. I've looked in the LILO documentation and can't figure out how to resolve this problem. I suspect it's something obvious and that I'm going to feel like hitting myself when I find the solution. Re: LILO 21.5-1 beta, LILO 21.4.32
Hi, I figured out the why I was having that compatability problem. I had installed from a Corel Linux CD, then upgraded to potato, and now to woody. Corel has it's own bootblock which was cboot.b This still doesn't explain the lilo version being different for the package and the binary contained therin. I guess I'll send an email to the package maintainer. "Colin R. R. I'd had the USB mouse attached to a KVM using a PS/2 adapter, so Debian was configured to use the mouse as PS/2. When I got to VA, I set up the box and X wouldn't start at ALL. I hashed thru a few websites to research the problem but still couldn't get it started until one website mentioned checking the kernel to make sure "HID" was enabled under "USB devices." I checked and it was set as a module and I saw what module to use (hid.o). I'd already had the usbmouse module loaded and when I loaded "hid" (insmod hid), then did "cat /dev/input/mice" and move the mouse around, I knew I had the USB mouse working. I started X, and sure enough, it was working. I dunno if this'll work for you or not, but give it a shot...it shouldn't hurt. Regards. -- R. running rsh and ssh?
At work we've been running a linux network for the past six years. This is a isolated network. Everything is linux except for three machines. One dual boots win98se to run a payroll program. One mostly runs in win98se to run a credit card processing program. One runs SCO to handle a CAD/CNC program. It is not very important to keep the SCO machine connected, but would be convenient for backups. My first concern is what to run on win98se that will handle ssl and provide good terminal emulation, and samba. (I don't know much about windows or its culture.) What to run? The default installation of ssh seems to want to replace rlogin outright. I want to run ssh/ssl beside rlogin and then phase rlogin out. How to? I've been using rlogin with a TERM hack on several machines. That is if TERM contains a semi-colon, execute it as a program. How do I duplicate this effect with ssh? Any tips appreciated. -- rir Live the dream. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sound problems in Gnome
When I run Gnome I get some sound problem, for example: tony@debian:~$ saydate sox: Can't open output file '/dev/dsp': Device or resource busy tony@debian:~$ Only cdplay seems to work fine, xmms gives also trouble, complains. However, if I logout and get back right away through kde or any other windowmanager, I can use sound without any problems. This indicates the fault being in Gnome. Help! Exim & verizon.net
I am trying to set up a debian mail server that sees the world through incoming.verizon.net and outgoing.verizon.net. Fetchmail is set up and recieving mail fine. I have muddled through a few small setups of sendmail, smail and exim over the years. Verizon has "authenticated SMTP" which is one snag. I don't know how I'm supposed to set this up on my end. I don't even know which protocols are equivalent from smtp EHLO output and exim terminology. There are six mail accounts that map like so: Local user account: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Verizon Email ID:vze0xx0x Verizon Email Alias: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am not sure how to set up my email-addresses file or the email passwd file that I think I need. An EHLO request to outgoing.verizon.net gives HELP XREMOTEQUEUE ETRN AUTH=LOGIN PLAIN AUTH LOGIN PLAIN PIPELINING DSN 8BITMIME SIZE 8388608 The exim log looks like: 2002-12-12 13:32:21 18MY8D-GB-00 <= [EMAIL PROTECTED] U=rir P=local S=298 2002-12-12 13:32:22 18MY8D-0000GB-00 ** [EMAIL PROTECTED] R=smarthost T=remote_smtp: SMTP error from remote mailer after MAIL FROM:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> SIZE=1331: host outgoing.verizon.net [206.46.170.8]: 553 Authentication is required to send mail as <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 2002-12-12 13:32:22 18MY8E-GG-00 <= <> R=18MY8D-GB-00 U=mail P=local S=1248 2002-12-12 13:32:22 18MY8D-GB-00 Error message sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2002-12-12 13:32:22 18MY8D-GB-00 Completed 2002-12-12 13:32:23 18MY8E-GG-00 ** [EMAIL PROTECTED] R=smarthost T=remote_smtp: SMTP error from remote mailer after end of data: host outgoing.verizon.net [206.46.170.8]: 553 Authentication is required to send mail as <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 2002-12-12 13:32:23 18MY8E-GG-00 Frozen (delivery error message) -- rir Live the dream. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Help needed to steal Knoppix settings, etc
Hi guys, I am trying to steal the network settings from what Knoppix does to copy them in my woody machine, but I don't know where I should look at. The interfaces file doesn't seem to be the one, or at least there is more to it than it shows. I am connecting right now from Knoppix, my machine has a USB modem (it is a gigapro? motherboard), I have all the modules that I need (pegasus.c), but still the network is not being set by the installation script. I run into another problem: The system froze while installing it, I think it is the motherboard's fault. I got a mess in the file system, so I had to run fcsk twice or so to fix it. This happened while installing the system, so some files were not properly installed. I have run a couple of times dselect but I can't find what is broken. As a result, when X tries to start, it tells me that some "dcopserver" or so can't be found and thus KDE can't start. At this point I am even willing to reinstall the X system, any ideas? Thanks a lot to all, AR Please send me a copy to this yahoo email, my system as I said is broken and my regular email is not functioning. Thanks. __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. framebuffer sizing again
I am trying to set the console screen size to 25 x 80 on Debian 3.0. I really don't care whether I am using the framebuffer device or not. I would like an easy generic solution. One that will work on various machines. Preferably without kernel compiles and without knowledge of what video card is installed. I have dug through the debian.user archives, /etc/init.d and friends, /usr/src/linux/Doc*, the video drivers, and the boot prompt howto. Well, I managed to get X to run, but only as root. I've read manpages and howto's until my eyes have crossed. When I try xdm as a user I get the message only root wants to run xdm. If I try startx I get a message unable to open consol. I've checked X, xdm, and startx all three are -rwxr-xr-x. I know I've overlooked something small. I'm neither a sysadmin nor a kernel programmer, I'm not even a unix user, I'm just a guy that wanted something stable that was still progressing (deciding to leaving OS/2 took a long time). Funny thing, when I decided to switch my home OS silly me took a few hours and read about various OSs. It came down to unix or linux (FreeBSD vs Linux actually). In the end linux won because of the controlled chaos development style. Then I looked at differant distros. Debian, RedHat, and Slackware were the final contenders. Red Hat lost out after reading the news groups and linux lists. From there it became a hard choice, the total hacker slackware _or_ the commercial grade 100% free debian. Debian won out. Since then I have tried RH, reformatted the drive and re-installed Debian. That said, if all they do is see 2.0 vs 5.2 then they don't need either Debian or Red Hat. They need to stay with what they use at work OR get Win9x. Intelligent selection seems to be beyond their ability. George -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] < /dev/null

kernel 'oops'
I recompiled my kernel (2.0.34...straight from the installation) to add sound support (NOT as a module), and when I boot to that kernel, I see, in the rapidly passing stuff, a phrase resembling 'unable to..(something).. ISOLATE ..(something) and then one 'oops' message in it's entirety. dmesg immediately thereafter doesn't show the "isolate" message, but *does* show at least 6 'oops' messages. I don't have the test of the oops message(s) available on this machine, but I can say that the kernel I recompiled is significantly (300k) smaller than the kernel that was installed when I put debian on the machine...why is that? and where can I go with these oops messages for help? thanks jim __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
RE: Switch to Red Hat?
Hi I grabbed all the 99.2 rpm's and alien -d'd them. there were error messages here and there, but the packages were debianized successfully (I had updated GTK and GLIB from the source to 1.1.11, so I didn't need those rpms). The first time I started 'gnome-session' I was flooded with messages "You are using png2.0.1, which has a known bug. use png1.0.1. After I got the rpm for the proper version (the version gnome 99.2 wants), all went smoothBUTit seemed to slow down considerably. I mean WAY slow. 99.2 has some nice features, but I got rid of it and 'downgraded' gnome to 30-2. I, too, suffered from 'should I move to RH' syndrome. Debian slink..(potato is too broken for my tastesthat and the fact that I'm doing dial up in Germany, so time on-line is at a premium for the cost) seems to get updated SO SLOWLY, whilest RH moves along at a brisk pace. But, I have tried out RH and Caldera OpenLinux, and for myself I can say that Debian is arranged the best, makes the most sense, and, if you stick to the .deb format for updates, will not get broken. A lot of stuff I expected to see in /home/user/ wasn't therethe X configuration files are all buried in /usr/X11R6/bin/X11/, versus the easy to find and use /etc/X11/, I can configure X under Debian...can't find the files on RH/Caldera, and the video drivers and other hardware-interface stuff in Debian 2 is, in my opinion, much better than what I get from RH and Caldera(especially caldera). Stick with Debianupdates may be slow, but you can be sure that anything you put on your system will work. my 2cents >From: "Paulo J. da Silva e Silva" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Date: Fri, 08 Jan 1999 11:40:50 -0300 >To: "Jeff Miller" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Cc: debian-user@lists.debian.org >Subject: RE: Switch to Red Hat? > >Jeff Miller writes: > > Hello Debian users, > > > > I have been using the Debian distribution of Linux for many months now, but am starting to recognize deficiencies in available, up-to-date packages. For example, the latest GNOME files are 0.99.2 but I cannot find .deb files for it anywhere. The best I could find was 0.30. This wouldn't be an issue if I could actually make my own, but many times the packages simply won't build for me. The *other* major distribution, Red Hat, has .rpm files available for the GNOME project and they are pretty much up to date but I can't get them to install on my Debian system. I am torn because I like the fact that Debian packages are easy to find and download, but it seems that Red Hat is more up-to-date. Are there others that have found this as a problem? Can someone convince me not to *cross over*? I am tempted to just run out and purchase Red Hat 5.2 and wipe my Debian system and leave it all behind me. I just installed the slink XDM package. It works fine, but the login screen shows something to the effect of 'this is an unsecure session'. the /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources file shows: xlogin*greeting: Debian GNU/Linux (CLIENTHOST) and further down Chooser*label.label: XDMCP Host Menu from CLIENTHOST I read xdm(1) and didn't really understand the Chooser portion. Installing X include/library files
Hello, I've just installed Debian 2.1 and discovered that I can't compile programs which require the header files such as Xm/Xm.h and X11/keysym.h. If anyone could point me to the package containing these, that would be great. Thanks, Rob
Re: Installing X include/library files
Thanks Pollywog, Brian, and James for helping out with this. So far I've gotten the lib6g-dev installed and that took care of half the problem, but I'm unable to find the lesstifg-dev package, so I still don't have the Xm.h, etc. files. Is this something that needs to be downloaded from somewhere? Thanks, Rob
Re: Installing X include/library files
Well, I got passed the lesstifg-dev problem...just downloaded it from the Debian archives. I tried searching for it in dselect...but no go. Anyhow, I hit another problem though...does anyone know what the Xpm library is and how to install it? Arrgh. I've tried looking at the search results for xpm and...well...I'm not too clear on how to handle this one... Thanks, Rob

Printer trouble
Hello, I'm having trouble getting my printer to respond to any input from the lpr command. Currently I'm running slink and am using a HP DJ882c printer. I've been trying to use magicfilter, but only have the df550c filter (this did work pretty well on the 1.3 release...bad resolution though). Anyhow, I'm using the same setup, but I don't get any response from the printer when a job is sent to it. If I lpr something then check it with lpq, the status field is updated with the time of the print job. My printcap looks like this: lp|Generic dot-matrix printer entry :lp=/dev/lp1 :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp :if=/etc/magicfilter/dj550c-filter :af=/var/log/lp-acct :lf=/var/log/lp-errs :pl#66 :pw#80 :pc#150 :mx#0 :sh If anyone has any ideas, that would be great. I should mention that I'm still pretty new at sys admin stuff, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Rob
RE: Printer trouble
Hi Angel, Thanks for your help on the printer. It turns out that lp1 was the one to use, so I must have done something to the system. Anyhow, I finally rebooted the system...that seemed to help...it works anyway. I don't know...maybe it had something to do with the lpd. Thanks, Rob

I chose Debian for 2 reasons: 1) a Debian user took the time to explain the major differances between FreeBSD and Linux giving the best features of each. He was objective about it, no Holy War discussion. 2) the Debian page wasn't a Windows page. I didn't have to wade through a dozen pages to get what I wanted. It loaded quickly. I didn't have a bunch of little page sections that didn't fit my browser screen. It didn't need a Windows95 browser to be best viewed. The Debian page seemed more interested in giving me usefull information than blasting me with javascripts, animations, and graphics by the ton.
