Problems with Debian Testing

2013-11-26 Thread Muntasim-Ul-Haque

Hi,
I just upgraded Debian Wheezy to Testing/Jessey. The up-gradation

fall-back to the Debian Stable or what?

Sharing Files and Folders over LAN and accessing them from Windows PC

2014-04-21 Thread Muntasim Ul Haque

Hi,
I searched couple of blogs and other sites and followed their
instructions to install and configure Samba for Debian. The best I could
do is to share files but they weren't copyable. So I want a procedure
that would work. For that I'm describing here my wish lists:

 * I want to share files and folders from Debian that would be
accessible from any Windows PC (cause I'm the only one using or
trying to use Debian here) over LAN.
 * Files and folders should be accessible without any fuss; I mean user
can access them without any username and password.
 * Uses should be able to copy the files and folders easily and without
any password but they shouldn't have the power to delete them.

These are more or less what I want with sharing files and folders. Now
how can I do that? Could anyone please describe the ways and provide the
instructions and perhaps any working links?

grub2 menu problems

2014-04-23 Thread Muntasim Ul Haque

Hi,
I dual-booted Debian with Windows 8. Windows 8 is shown as /Windows
Vista/ in grub menu. When I select that Windows Vista and press the
Enter key, an error message occurs saying: *

error: no argument specified**
**press any key to continue...*

When I press Enter then it boots into Windows 8 without any problem. So
I don't have any big issue here except Windows 8 is detected as Windows
Vista and that occurrence of error message. So what's the remedy?

Re: Can't login to Xfce after reboot in Debian 7.5

2014-05-15 Thread Muntasim Ul Haque

Got the solution. Here it is:

"1) Move the infinality script out of the system profile:

/sudo mv /etc/profile.d/infinality-settings.sh
/etc/infinality-settings.sh et /

2) Change permission to exectute by everyone:

/sudo chmod a+rx /etc/infinality-settings.sh /

3) Using your favourite text editor add following lines at the end of
your .bashrc file in home directory:

# INFINALITY FONT RENDERING CONFIG**
/ . /etc/infinality-settings.sh "

/Now I don't get it why I should move the script, change the permission
or edit the config file. GNOME worked well with Infinality. I didn't
have to do any of these. Would anyone care to elaborate these steps for
me? Thanks.
Also, is there any better alternative to Infinality for Debian. I want
better font rendering. The default font rendering is bad. Also changing
the anti-aliasing and other doesn't make a big difference.

Shutdown computer after a specific command has been executed

2013-12-09 Thread Muntasim-Ul-Haque

Hi,
I need a tool that would make sure that, my computer would shutdown
after a specific command has been executed. This tool would just wait
for the Terminal for executing a command, like '/sudo apt-get upgrade/'
and then after the command has been executed, my computer would
shutdown. Is that possible? Is there a tool or anything out there that
can do this for me? Let me know. It would be of great help. Thanks in
advance.

Re: Re: Shutdown computer after a specific command has been executed

2013-12-09 Thread Muntasim-Ul-Haque
Thanks Lars, Mardorf, Ashmore, Lauri and Jorgensen for your advice. I
needed it badly and your advice showed me the way. Thanks a lot.
To Jorgensen: I'm a Broadband Internet user and I'm billed for the time
my Internet connection is active. Sometimes it happens that I've a large
software to install like the TeXworks, which is about 650MB, I think.
Or, the system up-gradation, if you may consider. In that case, that
would take 6Hrs+ for my Internet connection. Sometimes I execute the
command and go to sleep. If the command execution completes and the
Internet is still on, then it would be a waste of my Internet. That's
why I needed a command that would shutdown the computer after the
command execution. That's it. And thanks for your concern.

Muntasim-Ul-Haque

Thank you everyone for joining me in this conversation. And sorry, my

Now, in a nutshell, what I have, is a command that would do the job for

could be considered as an example:

*/$ sudo -i/**/
/**/# apt-get update; apt-get upgrade; shutdown -h now/**/
/*I would try it myself though. Hope this works.

Sources.list file for Debian Wheezy

/**/deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian wheezy main/**/
/**/
/**/deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian wheezy-updates main/**/

Netselect-Apt is showing error message

2014-01-08 Thread Muntasim-Ul-Haque

Hi,
I've faced some problems while using the Netselect-Apt. While giving the
command */sudo netselect-apt/* I get the following errors:

*/Did not find any valid hosts (you requested 10)/**/
/**/netselect was unable to find a mirror, this probably means that/**/
/**/you are behind a firewall and it is blocking ICMP and/or/**/
/**/UDP traceroute. Or the servers test are actively blocking/**/
/**/ICMP and/or UDP traceroute probes./*

So what's the probable reason behind this? How can I use Netselect-Apt
without any further problem?

Thanking you,
Muntasim-Ul-Haque

An error occurred | GStreamer encountered a general stream error.

2015-05-07 Thread Muntasim Ul Haque
Hi, while playing most of the video files using Videos (Totem), a get
an error message, saying "An error occurred | GStreamer encountered a
general stream error.". Videos (Totem) plays *.avi files without any
error. But the problem occurs for *.mp4, *.mkv, etc. How to solve the
problem?

N.B. VLC player works just fine ll these file formats in my case.

Re: Re: An error occurred | GStreamer encountered a general stream error.

2015-05-11 Thread Muntasim Ul Haque
Since I already installed Debian from a Live USB, I cannot go back. I
need a way to solve the problem. Can anyone help me out in this regard?

Re: An error occurred | GStreamer encountered a general stream error.

2015-05-11 Thread Muntasim Ul Haque
I opened an .mkv file using Totem through Terminal and got the
following error in Terminal:

"libva info: VA-API version 0.36.0
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_drv_video.so

libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_0_36
libva info: va_openDriver() returns 0"

I do I solve this?

I do not have anything to do with those messages. I just want 'Totem'
to just works. That's all. I thought these messages could help solving
the problem Totem encountered. Anyway, I still cannot play mp4, mkv,
and most other types of video files using Totem. Doesn't any other
people having the same problem? This bug, or whatever it is, it
shouldn't have just affected me. Can you help me solving this problem?
Thanks.

Yep. "gstreamer1.0-libav is already the newest version."

No sound in Debian 8 'jessie' Xfce on Youtube

2015-07-21 Thread Muntasim Ul Haque

Hi,
I have had problems with Debian 8 'jessie' Xfce edition. I didn't get
any sound initially. Then after 'some' configuration, I got sound
working. But sound related problems were still there. When I plug-in the
headphone I got no sound. Then I have to re-adjust using 'pavucontrol'
and 'alsamixer'. And the main problem was with Youtube videos. I thought
that was because I don't have Flash player installed and I don't want
to. But then I tried Debian jessie GNOME and everything was working
fine. Even the Youtube video's sound. So what's the deal with Xfce? Why
there was no sound on YouTube? And why I had to configure every time I
switch from and to headphone and speaker?

With thanks,
Muntasim Ul Haque

Cannot play any media file using parole in Debian 8 jessie Xfce edition

2016-02-19 Thread Muntasim-Ul Haque

Hi,
I installed parole media player in Debian 8 jessie Xfce, but couldn't
run it. Then after some digging, I installed gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
package and was able to run parole. But I couldn't play anything using
parole. Every time I open any media file uisng parole, I get the same
error message: "Additional software is required. Parole needs H.264
decoder to play this file. It can be installed automatically."
I click the Install button every time, but that doesn't do anything. How
can I solve this problem?

Thanks.

2016-02-20 Thread Muntasim-Ul Haque
I installed all the gstreamer plugins needed for parole to work. But
that didn't help much. I can now play mp3's, but not any video or movie
file. Here's the output while trying to play a movie:

*
Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory**
**Cannot connect to server request channel**
**jack server is not running or cannot be started**
**^C**
**(parole:3142): GLib-CRITICAL **: Source ID 52 was not found when
attempting to remove it**

*
I think the problem is jack related. Any idea?
