Superblock unreadable with upgrade from 2.2.20 to 2.4.18-586tsc kernel on Woody
I am running Debian 3.0r1 (woody/stable). Initially, I installed kernel-2.2.20. I would like to upgrade to kernel-2.4.18-586tsc. My system has two harddrives. The second harddrive contains only a single extended partition divided into a logical linux swap partition and a logical ext2 partition. This harddrive is a Western-Digital Cavalier 2340 (Capacity: 341MB, 3322 RPM, 13ms (Read), ECC (Reed Soloman), No CHS(?), No LBA, Settings: DMA). Both the swap partition and ext2 partition operate with no problems with kernel-2.2.20 both before and after obtaining the fsck complaint noted below. 1) During the process of upgrading to kernel-2.4.18-586tsc, fsck complains when trying to read the superblock of the ext2 partition on the second harddrive. See Installation message below. After installation, executing "e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/hdb6", or "e2fsck -b 24577 /dev/hdb6", ... to correct the problem, repeats the message. 2) After installation and then booting with kernel-2.4.18-586tsc, the swap partition on my second harddrive is never added to swap space. As I have alternated running the machine with kernel-2.2.20 'vanilla', kernel-2.4 'bf2.4', and kernel-2.4.18-586tsc, through a number of installations, reinstallations and upgrades, over the past month, and as the drive is alway readable with 2.2.20 and the partition table is always unreadable with either of the two 2.4 kernels, and as the drive had no problems when running Windows 98 a month ago, I question if something is going on in the 2.4 kernel or if something is wrong with the harddrive. Might the 2.4 kernels (kernel-2.4.18-586tsc, bf2.4) not include a kernel option that is included in 'vanilla' which would solve my problem? Say because this is an old disk that does not support LBA and CHS? Are there particular reasons why the 2.4 kernels might be picking up something wrong with my harddrive that the 2.2.20 kernel is not? Are the 2.4 kernels more sensitive? Can anyone offer any other suggestions as to what I might try to do to eliminate the fsck and ignored swap partition problems? Detailed messages and logs follow. Thanks, -- Mark [EMAIL PROTECTED] === Note: Installation of Woody on my machine with bf2.4 proceeds through creating partitions /dev/hdb6 and /dev/hdb6, however, both partitions are then unreadable and ignored through the remainder of the installation as their partition tables are immediately corrupt after they are written. Re: (no subject)
I didn't take this as an attack in any way, but you should realize why a great many of us run Debian systems... "Polish," as you put it, isn't on top of the priority list. Neither is "snazz(iness) out of the box." If we want polish and snazzy, we know where to find it. If: good = snazzy, cute logos, and a nice (a la Windows) GUI install And: bad = a no-frills, fast, clean, stable out-of-the-box OS suitable for running in a production environment Then: You're right... Debian is not for you. You missed my point entirely, probably because I was trying to use sarcasm and be witty, but failed miserably. :) *I* compile things all the time and put them in /usr/local. Hell, I usually make it a separate partition. My point was, there are some people who use unstable because they need certain packages, or the latest versions of them, and may not know how to compile, make a .deb, etc. There's testing, of course, but I know a number of people (for some odd reason) who shy away from it because they think it's an after-thought. You can argue that if a person lacks certain skills they shouldn't be running this and they shouldn't be running that. Fine. I agree, to a point. But when a package maintainer uploads a package with a blatant typo that should have been caught with a simple test-run, it has absolutely nothing to do with the user-base or their skill-set. *THAT* was my point. sendmail 8.9.2 & Verisign
Hello: Has anyone else noticed this little problem I upgraded my sendmail (8.9.2 from frozen), and now our Verisign Digital Signatures don't work. Well, they kind of don't. Here's the deal: If I simply sign an email without an attachment, the signature arrives valid. If I sign AND encrypt an email without an attachment, the signature arrives valid. If I sign AND encrypt an email WITH an attachment, the signature arrives valid. If I sign an email WITH an attachment, the signature arrives INVALID. So, the only thing that appears to be a problem is a signed message, with an attachment. Strange. Is there some new "feature" I'm not aware of? I have verified this is not a POP/IMAP problem. Everything worked fine under 8.8, and I just tested against another box running 8.8. Everything's good so it's gotta be post-8.8 sendmail doing something funky. Any help would sure be appreciated. Recreating Installed Package Lists
Hi: I did a stupid thing... I accidently blew away a bunch of stuff in /var/lib/dpkg I didn't think things were working correctly, and I wanted a fresh start with dselect. Obviously, I know better now, and I just restored from tape. This does pose an interesting question, though. Is it possible to "re-create" which packages and versions are on a system, so dselect doesn't complain about dependencies? For example, before I restored from tape, I tried to install package X. X depends on Perl, which dselect said I didn't have. Well, I do, but not to its knowledge Is this info stored anywhere else besides /var/lib/dpkg that i could have recreated from? Compiling w/shadow support
Hi, I've recently switched over to Debian, and have shadow support installed. I seem to have a reacurring problem when I need to compile my own software. telling apt to ignore and continue
Hi, Majordomo was removed from the official distributions, but I needed it. It was automatically removed when I used apt-get dist-upgrade. So, I forced dpkg to add it manually. Now, when I try to apt-get upgrade my system, it won't continue because Majordomo is installed, and has unmet dependencies. Actually, it depends on perl, and for some reason it doesn't recognize my existing perl as being valid. Whatever. My question is... how can I tell apt-get to just ignore this majordomo package and never tell me about it again? Thanks, Mark

Windows/Mac drivers came with the printer. For Linux, I had to use TurboPrint for the driver (http://www.turboprint.de/english.html). It's about US$35.00 if you want full functionality, but works nicely. I don't have any experience sharing it over a network. -- Mark A. Re: when is debian 3.0 coming out ?
No, everyone is too worried about creating testing/development/unstable/semi-stable/used-to-be-stable dists at the moment. An actual stable environment should be released in 2005. POP Mail Reader where Mail stays on server
I know a message was posted recently asking if a POP Mail Reader existed for Debian that would read mail on the server without downloading it. I did not see a response. Does anyone know of such a POP Mail Reader? Thanks, -- Mark [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Yup, using gpmconfig in console mode (i only just set up X (without a mouse) today.) i'll see if i can track down an old external modem. i am starting to think maybe i toasted my serial ports when i shorted out my motherboard. though, that seems unlikely in my expierence. thanks for the suggestions. any other ideas? ~mark
RE: serial config
yeah i also tried plugging and unplugging all my ports from the motherboard a bunch of times. anyone know where i can get a good I/O card cheap? and is it fairly easy to get linux to talk to a card with serial ports on it? (just a matter of messing with setserial right?) thanks, ~mark On Wed, 21 Jun 2000, C. Empty password field for libuuid & Debian-exim - Why not a security risk?
Upon installation, Debian includes users libuuid and Debian-exim in /etc/shadow with an empty password field: libuuid::14292:0:9:7::: Debian-exim::14377:0:9:7::: Although Debian-exim specifies /bin/false as a shell in /etc/passwd to eliminate login, libuuid does not: libuuid:x:100:101::/var/lib/libuuid:/bin/sh Debian-exim:x:103:105::/var/spool/exim4:/bin/false Besides which, the use of /bin/false does not eliminate use of an account in ways through ssh. e.g. http://www.semicomplete.com/articles/ssh-security/ 1) What stops one from logging into a Debian machine through libuuid or Debian-exim by specifying a blank password? Or, using ssh though one of these users and a blank password? 2) For a greater degree of comfort or security, could I change the password field to an '*' for these users without causing a problem? And, where would I see that problem if it did occur (e.g. exim is not installed on my system.)? libuuid:*:14292:0:9:7::: Debian-exim:*:14377:0:9:7::: Thanks in advance. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
