Re: Fail to telnet Debian from Windows

2003-10-29 Thread Lars Jensen
Good, then things sounds like theyre working right!

You shouldn't be using telneyt. The telnet daemon on
your debian box is turned off by default. Install ssh, make sure sshd is
running, and ssh into the box instead - use putty as the XP ssh client.

can't run X - permission denied

2003-10-29 Thread Lars Jensen
Only root can run X windows and certain other programs on my machine.
I'm not sure whether I inadvertently changed something. This wasn't a
problem before. Other programs behave the same way, for example if I use
"which" as a user, the system responds:

/usr/bin/which: /dev/null: Permission denied
/usr/bin/which: /dev/null: Permission denied

I checked the permissions and thy are set to 755, i.e world executable
and readable.

Any ideas how what this could be?

Thanks,
Lars.

Network lost after softboot

2002-09-19 Thread Lars Jensen

I run sid and recently upgraded my kernel from 2.2.19 to 2.4.18. When I
first installed sid (with kernel 2.2.19), my network card, a

3Com Etherlink 10/100 (3c905c)

was immetiately recognized. I did a kernel upgrade from
the debian 2.4.18-686 pre-compiled kernel image, and this kernel did not
recognize the network card until I installed the 3c59x module, and only
so after a softboot from kernel 2.2.19 into kernel 2.4.18.

Any ideas how to make 2.4.18 recognize the card after a cold boot?
Are there some parameters I must supply for the configuration of the
module?

Thanks for any help.

pcmcia problem (3Com 3c575)

2002-09-25 Thread Lars Jensen

I just upgraded my kernel, using the debian pre-compiled kernel image
for kernel 2.4.18, I also installed the corresponding
kernel-pcmcia-modules-2.4.18 package. The packages installed fine, but I
can't get pcmcia to see my 3Com PC card. The card is a 10/100 LAN
CardBus, model 3CXFE575CT, and it worked fine with kernel 2.2.19 and
its corresponding pcmcia package, using the 3c575 driver. I have another
card, an NE2000 compatible that uses the pcnet_cs driver, and that
works fine with new 2.4.18. My modem card also works with
2.4.18. I didn't even have to run modconf to make either of these work.

When I look under /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net/pcmcia I notice
that only 3c574 and 3c589 drivers are present for 3Com PC-cards. Does this
mean that other 3Com cards are not supported?

iAny ideas anyone?

Module (eepro100) won't install

2001-12-14 Thread Lars Jensen
I just installed woody with the compact kernel (2.2.19) , and the install went
smoothly - my system found my network card (eepro100 driver) and it
worked first time.

Since I have a two-processor system, I upgraded the kernel to 2-4-14smp,
and everything worked, except the network. I guess 2.2.19-compact has
built-in support for eepro100, but 2.4.14 doesn't. Running 2.4.12, I tried
insmod eepro100
and it looks like the module installs without errors, but it doesn't
work and lsmod gives the line

eepro100(unused)

I also tried to add the line
alias eth0 eepro100
to my /etc/modules - that didn't work either.

Did I miss something in the installation of the module. Do I have to
specify an io address, and if so, how do I do that with insmod?

Thanks for any help,
Lars.

X won't forward (ssh -X)

2001-12-18 Thread Lars Jensen
After switching to woody from potato, I'm having problems with setting
the display on a remote machine:

Both machine A and B below runs woody.

I ssh from machine A into machine B with ssh -X, and when I run any
X-application (like xclock) I get an instant error:
"Error: can't open display"

I have tries ssh -X'ing into B from other machines also, and had no luck
with them either.

Strangely enough, when I let A and B switch roles, everything works
fine. I have set up both machines myself, and I intended the setup to be
the same on A and B, but something must be different in their setup?!
Could there be any settings on B that needs to be changed in order that
X be forwarded?

Any ideas what could be the problem, or how to debug it?

I'm having a problem connecting to my server with ssh after I upgraded
to woody. I can connect fine from another Debian machine, of which I
have a couple. However when I try to connect to my woody box from other
non-debian hosts either the connection just hangs for a long time, or I
get the following error:

warning: Authentication failed.
Disconnected; no more authentication methods available (No further
authentication methods available.).

This error occurs consistently when I try to connect to any of my woody
boxes from non debian hosts.

Is this a configuration problem with the sshd_config ?

Thanks,
Lars.

samba newbie: setting permissions?

2002-02-21 Thread Lars Jensen
I just setup samba, and would like to use it to serve an application to
another window user. My situation is such that I have two windows users:

One user (administrator) should have full rights to the shared directory.

The other user should just be able to run (execute and read) files.

How do I do this? All the sample smb.conf I have been able to dig up deals
with the situation where all users have the same rights.

What kind of security would I use (share, user, server)?
How would I set the permissions?
Do I need to change the UNIX permissions also?

Another question I have is once I have set up a share, and users have
certain rights, does this give the users the same rights in all
subdirectories of the share also?

Thanks for your help,
Lars.

I had the same problem. I noticed that /var/spool/lpd has different
group/ownershipin woody, so I simply replaced my /var/spool/lpd
directory in woody with that from potato (I did a cp -p to preserve
ownerships and permissions). After that everything worked fine.

Help configure XFree 4.0

2001-06-07 Thread Lars Jensen

Does anyone know how to configure a Diamond Speedstar Plus with an
Tseng ET4000 chipset on woody with X 4.0? I have tried all the
possible settings in xf86config that I can think of - with no
luck. The error from the end of /var/log/XFree86.0.log is included
at the end of this message.

Here is what I did :

1) apt-get install task-x-window-system
(to install X Window System (complete))
2) run xf86config and choose above card from the list. I used the same
horizontal and vertical sync settings and resolution that has worked
for me when configuring the display in potato with X 3.6.

The same settings that works in potato simply won't work for me in
woody. I don't understand this because the XFree86 website states that
cards with the ET4000 chipset should work with X 4.0.

I next tried to install the package xserver-svga to see if this was the
problem, but X still wouldn't start.

What is going wrong here? Any ideas to fix this?

Thanks,
Lars.

woody install from Windows partition: HELP

2001-06-08 Thread Lars Jensen

I have a problem getting woody installed from a windows partition using
loadlin. I first download the rescue.bin, root.bin and drivers.tgz
as well as the dosutils, and then put them in the appropriate paths on
the windows partition. The installation process starts up OK, but when I
get to the point when the installer wants to install the base system I
am stuck - I don't know what to enter here - apparently there is no way of
getting the base system over a ppp connection??

Is there a base.tgz file like base2_2.tgz for potato?
Can I use base2_2.tgz for woody?
Do I necessarily have to install potato first and do a apt-get dist-upgrade?
-Or how do I proceed?

Linksys NP100 PCMCIA card not recognized

2002-04-19 Thread Lars Jensen
I have a Linksys NP100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100 pcmcia card,
and it is supposed to work with the axnet_cs driver. However I can't get
the card to work. The card does work with the psnet_cs driver, but the
connection speed is very slow. Have any one managed to get this card to
work?

Thanks for any help.

Lars.

One SMC card I once configured needed the tulip driver to work. What SMC
card do you have?

Abiword font problem

2002-04-30 Thread Lars Jensen
Abiword crashes due to a font problem whenever I start it up. It
complains that it is unable to add to the font path. I don't understand
this because I have type 1 fonts, and they are loaded in my
XF86Config-4.

How do I fix this problem?

Thanks,
Lars.

Re: Abiword font problem. SOLVED!

2002-05-02 Thread Lars Jensen
The problem seemed to be that xfs, the X fonts server, was installed. xfs
apparently isn't needed when running XFree4?!

Thanks for to anyone that replied.

Lars.

Re: xdvi not displaying eps graphics

2002-05-06 Thread Lars Jensen
This is definitely an improvement, but all I get is still only the
boundary box. I used to see the whole picture by default when I
started up xdvi. (I didn't even need to hit the "View PS" button.)

Any ideas how to do this?

Thanks,
Lars.

network configuration problem

2002-06-28 Thread Lars Jensen
Initially when I first set up my system (potato), I configured the
network for DHCP. How do I change it to a manual configuration of DNS,
gateway and permanent IP? Which files do I need to change? Is there a
tool for this?

Also, how do I change my host name.

Thanks for your help.
