Actually, you need to insert the second or last CD of your multi-cd archive first if you have more than one cd.. as suggested in an earlier thread[1]: `setxkbmap us` (or whatever variant you're using -- for a good time, try `setxkbmap dvorak` ;) heh. sorry for not having checked the archives. it was too surreal for me to experience to even think that this may happen twice. also, the machine in question is being really wicked lately. anyway, my problem appears way before I even get an xterm. it's already present in xdm. sucks if your login name contains one of the broken characters... nevertheless, I am using the us keymap, and XF86Config-4 is correctly configured. I also see it in the logs: (**) Option "XkbLayout" "us" (**) XKB: layout: "us" it's cool to have a workaround, but i think we need to fix the bug at a deeper level. what the heck is going on? and why 'c' and 'e'? sounds like a corruption of the keyboard map files to me. or something like that... A problem sounding suspiciously similar to this afflicts U.K. keyboard users who had specified "uk" as their XkbLayout rather than "gb". The XKB layout names are based on ISO 3166 country codes, which means that the U.K. gets the odd "country" code of "gb" rather than "uk". Does this information help any? I have a slightly different error, but which is in the same vein. All keys work unless I press Caps Lock, then all keys are shifted left. So with Caps Lock on, if I type ls I get ;D. I did not notice this straight away, as pressing shift does not have the same effect. This problems occurs in all X programs I use, but not on the Virtual terminals. A snipped from my XF86Config is as follows: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Generic Keyboard" Driver "keyboard" Option "CoreKeyboard" Option "XkbRules" "xfree86" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "uk" Option "XkbVariant""gb" EndSection I have this problem regardless of whether XkbLayout is set to "gb" or "uk". James, I have tried the following command suggested by Gary Parker. # sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run \ --kernel-include-path=/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.4.18-bf2.4/include/ \ --kernel-install-path=/lib/modules/2.4.18-bf2.4/kernel/drivers/video/ Are you actually running kernel 2.4.18.bf2.4 ?? Try typing in uname -r at the command line. It must match exactly or the install will fail. Also, you are using an older version of the installer, 1.0-5336 is the latest installer available at: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux.html If you compiled your own kernel, you will need to have the sources (still) installed in order to compile the nvidia kernel module (unless you made your own headers package...). If you are running the testing or unstable debian distributions, there are several specific debian packages that can replace the Nvidia installer and IMHO are much easier to use. Movies, household network and 54g limits... (maybe...)
Hi, in my flat there are 1 router, 1 range extender, 2 vista, 1 XP and my 2 linux ubuntu (one of which is mail/samba/nfs/etc server, is monitored via mrtg and contains a lot of music/movies). All, wireless. The problem: when I listen to music or watch movies from my laptop (my flatmates idem) the results are not so good... many freezes... The graphs say it is clearly not bandwith fault. Reading around: "It is well known that the medium access control (MAC) layer is the main bottleneck for the IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs." There are scientific publications around but seems the problem is not solved. 1. Do you know something, please? 2. With the new N technology, the problem is solved? [I doubt but I should test...] Thank you so much, Gionni -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Movies, household network and 54g limits... (maybe...)
> It's actually pretty hard to get the full bandwidth that 802.11g promises. Sorry if I cut a bit but your objection is fondamentally this way (possible factors: close wireless networks, 2.4GHz devices, ..., ok, but all linked to your mother reasoning). But I am telling you that if you see mrtg graphs you clearly see that G is not the problem because the bit rate of a movie is Max 2Mbps (when I use my LAN for copying with scp, I can touch 8/9 for a long time without problems). So, maybe, is something different... There is an interesting paper, "Saturation throughput analysis of error-prone 802.11 wireless networks" that explains just like the nature of a wireless lan (many efforts on CMDA...) take you to have more problems when there are more clients... - at least, this is the idea that I put in my mind :) - and in fact (but I have to replicate my tries) to me it would seem that freezes are worse when all my flatmates are using their laptop... For example, Peter, with N, you say is better, but may I ask you the architecture of your network? (fast: only you or...) Thank you so much, I would like to solve this problem with my cheapy devices ;) All your opinions are very appreciated, I am in England Gionni -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Ok, but do you know papers or scientist engineers talking about a possible solution (b/g) and indicating a way (eg. drivers change)? 2. Does the story change as to n technology? If so, why? 3. If what we are saying is correct, Peter's thesis about his file server is incorrect... > Because... I did some more testing... - Ok, thanks Peter for your observations. I gotta do other tests too (I'm gonna think about yours). - yeah, your architecture doesn't add but is pro ;) - Only one doubt: in a wireless network, if the router and the nics are N except one G card, I'd expect the last one drag all back (my usual idea about CSMA/CD signal-caching collisions: MAC level saturation), am I right? - I will try to write to the authors of my papers. Fw: PPP is HOAXED!
- Original Message - From: Johnny Thompson To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, May 02, 1999 2:04 PM Subject: PPP is HOAXED! To all who receive this,I have a big problem. I have a dialup account to usonet.ne.jp and my stuffwon't work after I've installed kernel 2.2.6. I'm pretty sure it's thekernel but the worse part is when I boot into kernel 2.0.36 stuff stilldoesn't work! I don't know what to do now because I've tried everything Iknow..This is Debian 2.1 and I really need help. I don't know what's going on. Ican't send or receive anything on my modem and if it helps, I don't have a/dev/ppp anything. I have an externel modem and the SD or RD (send data andreceieve data) lights don't blink @ all. I can connect to the net fine, myppp script is fine (I think) because It worked right before I installed thenew kernel but once I'm logged in, nothing works! I don't know what elseto do. All my other system configuration stuff is the same as it was. I amwilling to re-install if that will help, but I think it's not workingbecause of the new kernel compilation. I have not installed the kernel 2.2updates from debian.org because I can't get them off the net because pppshows the same error with default kernel. Re: PGP with netscape
Not to discourage you from using Netscape for E-mail or anything, but mutt is the best (IMHO) for e-mail. It can automatically encrypt and sign messages as well as extract public pgp keys sent to you in e-mail messages. That my friend is a mail client.. Yea, I know I sent this in netscape but I'm in school where they don't have linux.. Mutt also supports PGP 2.6.3a. The only downfall I see in mutt is that it attaches everything so automatic public key decryption in the receiving mail client fail to auto-decrypt, so I've been told. It also doesn't automatically decrypt messages or at least I haven't found a way to make it do so.. Re: ZIP drive and kernel 2.2?
The only think I can think of is there's another program, more specifically a TSR that's running resident in the background causing modprobe to report with this error. Are you sure that you don't have lpd running in the background and that you have unloaded any other possibly conflicting modules that may take up your IRQ or use the parrallel port? Reboot your computer and check the bios settings for your parallel port's IRQ and memory address. Then modprobe lp and make sure it's displayed as shown in your /proc/interrupts and the other file that's in the /proc directory that shows memory address for devices connected to the system (sorry, I can't tell you exactly which one, I'm in school on a NT box). If everything isn't 'congruent', then you need to check to be sure that no other device is using those resources. Debian Mail wrote: > > Just modprobe ppa and e-mail the output to this list. Re: Kernel 2.2.x: PPP routing problem?
I had the same problem.. IP masquerade isn't re-reading the firewall rules after the link goes down. Creating a null /etc/{wherever}ipmasqueradeislocatedinthisdirectory/ppp file. touch /etc/ipmasq/ppp .. That should solve your problem.. ;) If that doesn't work, uninstall ipmasq because you probably don't need it anyway. BTW: STOP REINSTALLING.. :) Kris wrote: Problem: PPP works fine under kernel 2.0.36; under 2.2.x it connects, but it seems like no packets go in or out. tcpdump only shows what looks like things trying to get out, but not getting anything back (really technical, huh?). I can ping myself (localhost & local IP), but not _any_ remote IPs (including my nameservers). All IRQs, nameservers, & so on are set correctly. PPP is compiled into the kernel (of 2.2.9), and I'm using the latest version of PPP. It's slink, but I've tried it with apt-get update & upgrade using the unstable area; makes no difference. Re-installed many times. Booting from floppy due to a resistant HD/BIOS. I've spent about two weeks on this problem, scouring searchlinux.com, deja(news), the HOW-TOs, Google, and so on. Thanks again, Rob Leachman [EMAIL PROTECTED] PS: Well I wanted to write one of those really rare messages but cannot click send without finding something to suggest... nowhere in the (i386) install manual does it clearly state: 1. Download compact-rescue and compact-root 2. Make floppies 3. Boot the rescue disk 4. Do the most obvious thing 5. Bask in the glow I had to "go for it" with less certainty than would have been provided with at least step 1 explicitly stated (under the "installing over network" section?). Shrug, whatever. Once you have installed your system you could run the tcl/tk program to either add/remove packages or to configure existing packages. This could be tied in to the existing documentation about each package allowing the user to know what the possible configurations are (and what will happen if they change them). Window Manager Problem
Please can you help: I have a problem with the fvwm window manager, it cannot load libXpm.so.4. When I run startx, X starts and displays the grey screen, then drops back down to the terminal. I then tried running fvwm from the terminal and got an error: fvwm: couldnt load libXpm.so.4 I checked and the xpm4.7 package is installed, reinstalled it anyway, then reinstalled the fvwm packages and still got the same answer. Unless anyone has any suggestions I feel that it must be a problem with the hard drive somewhere. So if I dont hear anything in the next week I will reformat and see if that fixes it. Problem: update-menu not working
Hello, I have no entry's in the menu's of fvwm2. I have just installed Debian 1.3.1 which is supposed to update the fvwm menus with all the packages installed on my machine. This has not happened. I searched and read through all the documentation I could find and found the command that is supposed to do this: update-menu Hopever, I have executed this command a number of times and still have my left mouse button menu as and xterm and the exit menu. I checked that the correct format files for the packages are in the stated directories, which they were with no luck. Then through sheer desperation, copied all the package files in the default director into /etc/menu and still I have had no success. start-stop demon problems
Hello, I have a problem with the start-stop demon at bootup. Most demons start ok except the following: at cron sysklog xinet I know they haven't started as the message at boot up complains: No such file or Directory but neglects to tell me which file or directory it is looking for. All the packages have status 'install ok installed'. I tried to manually run these deamons and managed to get the 'atd' going, but the rest all churned out the above error message. Any one have any ideas of what has happened. Things were ok with these deamons as far as I know before I upgraded to 1.3.1. -- John Stevenson 3rd Yr BSc Soft. ethernet card installation
Hi, I am new to Linux, and have recently installed Debian. In my attempts to get connected to my school's ethernet, I have found that there is no /dev/eth*'s on my system. I have one network card, a Netgear FA310TX. I found this card in a hardware list with the word "Tulip" in parentheses next to it, so following the Ethernet HOWTO's instructions on how to use ethernet drivers as modules I tried to install the card by adding an alias to my aliases file in /etc/modutils. The line I added was "alias eth0 tulip". This didn't seem to have any effect. There was no /dev/eth*'s after I rebooted. If someone could tell me what I need to do to get Debian to recognize my card, and then how to set up DHCP, I would be extremely grateful. -JB __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I was able to modprobe many of the modules in my /lib/modules//net directory successfully. I'm clueless as to telling if this allowed the detection of my NIC. I didn't see /dev/eth0 appear, and when I ran "modprobe --showconfig", one of the lines said "alias eth0 off". That line is nowhere in my modules.conf, so I don't know where that's coming from. Would I even see a /dev/eth0 appear after modprobe'ing the correct driver? I'm not sure what I'm looking for. As far as updating the kernel goes, does the 2.4.2 kernel work ok with the potato dist? I'm currently running 2.2.18pre21. Thanks for your help so far! -JB __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Auctions - Buy the things you want at great prices! http://auctions.yahoo.com/
alien/perl
I was trying to install alien in order to convert some rpm's to deb's, so I downloaded the latest version of alien in deb format. I tried to dpkg --install it, but it balked at my not having the package "perl" installed on my system. I have perl-5.005, perl-5.005-base, perl-5.005-doc, perl-5.005-suid, and perl-base installed. I then went to dselect to try to find a package called "perl", which there is, but it conflicts with perl-5.005-base. A lot of other packages depend on the perl-5.005 packages, so installing the plain 'perl' package would break them. I'm new to debian/linux, so I don't want to mess things up by removing perl-5.005, but I want to get alien installed. Any solutions/suggestions? Also, I tried to dpkg --install perl-5.6.0-20_i386.deb from the unstable section, and again the problem of many of my packages depending on the perl-5.005 packages came up. -JB __ Do You Yahoo!? unresolved symbols in 3dfx.o
I've been attempting to prepare my machine to play some quake, but I can't get the 3dfx.o module to work. I downloaded the device3dfx source using apt-get, ran the buildpkg script, and then installed the .deb created. As the deb is trying to update-modules, I see a message saying "Unresolved symbols in lib/.../3dfx.o". When I depmod -e this (I've been hitting the man pages...), the two symbols it mentions are "register_chrdev_Rbbdcb79f" and "printk_R1b7d4074". In the the archives someone mentioned running nm 3dfx.o | grep printk, and then grep printk /proc/ksyms to see if the kernel headers that were used match. Mine don't. I'm not sure how to fix that, because my kernel source is in /usr/src/linux (actually kernel-source-2.2.18pre21, but it's symlinked) where the programs should be able to find the right files. I just recently recompiled my kernel because the makefile wouldn't run without the kernel having been configured and installed, so I dont' think restoring my old kernel would help. Also, none of the modules made after "make modules; make install" worked -- they all had unresolved symbols. I restored the old modules, and they're working fine with my new kernel. So I guess it boils down to a) why can't I compile a working 3dfx.o, and b) why aren't modules made based on my kernel src (retrieved using dselect) working either? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry I'm so verbose, but I work tech support and know how important every little thing can be... Cheers, JB (running Debian 2.2.18pre21, custom kernel, with 2.2.18pre21 kernel source) __ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Mail. http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/

dont worry, it's not that bad. i found out when i switched from potato->woody that sometimes you just have to softlink the "missing" files to existing (possibly with lower version-numbers) files... or sometimes do a 'dpkg -x /' if it still wouldnt want to install. oh yeah, dont forget to run ldconfig when you've created new links to libraries. greetz (--[ on Tuesday 21 August 2001 11:10, P Kirk bothered us with ]:: ^ perl: error while loading shared libraries: libdb.so.3: cannot open shared ^ objec ^ t file: No such file or directory ^ ^ I've done a Google search and seen this come up a lot but can't find a fix. ^ ^ Is my system now broken beyond repair or is there a way to fix this? ^ Manually compile glibc perhaps? -- :---=::=: | L . ALSA with vi82xx loading and static problems
Hi, A while back, I had sound working with kernel 2.6.8. But I had to switch to a 2.4 kernel for a while and sound broke. It continues to be broken after switching back to 2.6.x. (I never deleted any of the kernels, just booting different images through LILO). I specifically want to use 2.6.6 now... First, dmesg shows a LOT of lines looking like: snd_{pcm|seq_device|rawmidi|via82xx|...}: Unknown symbol snd_* (i.e. lots of modules, with lots of unknown symbols) After booting up, I tried manually running "modprobe snd", but I'd get $ modprobe snd FATAL: Error inserting snd (/lib/modules/2.6.6/kernel/sound/core/snd.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) But if I goto the modules dir, and manually run "insmod snd.ko", the modules load... So why doesnt it load normally on startup or the first time I run modprobe? After loading, I can run alsaconf/alsactl without errors. KDE/arts also stops reporting errors. But the only thing coming out of the speakers is static. Here is my lsmod and lspci output if it helps: $ lsmod | grep snd snd_via82xx22144 0 snd_pcm84360 1 snd_via82xx snd_ac97_codec 61444 1 snd_via82xx snd_mpu401_uart 6144 1 snd_via82xx snd_rawmidi20128 1 snd_mpu401_uart snd_seq49104 0 snd_timer 20996 2 snd_pcm,snd_seq snd_seq_device 6536 2 snd_rawmidi,snd_seq snd44836 8 snd_via82xx,snd_pcm,snd_ac97_codec,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device soundcore 7392 1 snd snd_page_alloc 8964 2 snd_via82xx,snd_pcm $ lspci -v :00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. My burner BURNS just fine, but I was wondering >what the new device file name is that refers to the device. I'm mainly just >looking for the pattern it adheres to. I thought it was something like /dev/scd0, >but I tried several /dev/sd* and scd* files, but none of them worked. >(unless there's one that I'm missing and not trying) I can't really unscrable your question (I'm probably too unconcentrated right now). However, I have a vague idea that you are asking "How do I mount an IDE CD drive that has been set under ide-scsi administration?" Let us take my own system as an example: Before setting up ide-scsi I have one IDE CD-RW. It is the slave on the primary IDE controller. Its device is named /dev/hdb It also has a symbolic link named /dev/cdrom which, in this case, points to /dev/hdb Now I want to be able to both burn CDs with this drive AND I want to be able to mount it as an ordinary CD drive. I do this: I configure the kernel to use sg (generic scsi) and ide-scsi. On my system they are loadable modules. Then I tell LILO to tell the kernel to treat my CD drive as a scsi device by using the ide-scsi driver. I do that in /etc/lilo.conf where I put this in the append line: append="hdb=ide-scsi" I then run /sbin/lilo to make the changes take effect upon the next reboot. I then reboot. Now my CD drive is no longer /dev/hdb. It has become /dev/scd0. However, my /dev/cdrom still points to /dev/hdb. Trying to mount my CD drive now will fail. I must now make /dev/cdrom point to /dev/scd0 I achieve that like this: rm /dev/cdrom ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom I.e. first I remove the old symlink since it is no longer any good. Then I make a new symlik that point to the correct device. For you I my first guess would be that your CD drives must be /dev/scd Have you tried mounting the devices manually one by one? This is the tedious way to find your devices, but it should be foolproof. What does cdrecord -scanbus report? (I haven't got it within reach right this minute) I would think there would be some tools that could scan the virtual scsi bus and list devices. I never needed one, so I can't help you there. I hope this helps you. Best regards Johnny :o)
Create install-CD from /var/cache/apt?
Hi, how do I create a usable installation CD with downloaded packages that are currently in /var/cache/apt? I am running a standard Debian 2.2r3. I just installed KDE 2.1.1 using dselect to fetch and install packages from the net. I need to install this standard setup on other Debian 2.2r3 computers, and I don't want to spend the hours downloading the same packages every time. In some cases there will be no Internet connection to do that (or it will be unacceptably slow). So I would like to produce an installation CD with the packages in my cache. I would like to be able to simply add that CD to the sources.list as any other source, so I can use dselect to install. I have tried looking at apt-move, but I do not comprehend its usage. I have tried searching the lists for similar questions but I couldn't find any. Can anyone help me? Best regards Johnny :o)
Re: Create install-CD from /var/cache/apt?
Sorry I have taken a while to respond. Unfortunately I will be away from my Debian boxes until monday, so I can't start investigating your suggestions before then. Meanwhile perhaps we can come a little further with some questions. It seems rsync could be needed for your solution? (Sorry, I'm not very technically intelligent.) One thought I had was: would it work simply copying the /var/cache/apt tree to a CD, mount that CD on /var/cache/apt, and get dselect to use the contents on the CD that way? Would that require the same Internet source in sources.list that I used on the first computer to fetch and install the first time? I.e. would an Internet connection be needed on subsequent installs on the other computers? One problem I thought of with installing from a "real" installation CD would be that the packages would be cached on the new computer also. In my case I can not be sure that there will be enough space on the harddisc for that. Hence the above idea. Hope this sets some things in motion at your end. Best regards Johnny :o)
