if that was the motive, why go to the trouble of installing *anything*? By
your logic, all non-Windows-preinstalled boxes are similarly suspect. But
perhaps I don't have enough info:

1. is there a law in your jurisdiction requiring preinstallation of an OS?

2. does Fry'$ have a policy prohibiting sale of bare-bones systems (no OS
included)? If yes, there's FreeDOS & Debian (probably Ubuntu )

3. is there a proprietary feature of Lin$pire which lends itself to
pirating commercial software?

4. what was the Lin$pire tax, IOW, could you have purchased the same setup
for less sans Lin$pire (not necessarily at Fry'$)? (also see #2). If you
believe Lin$pire was "free", perhaps you should inform Lin$pire of your
suspicions

5. is it not true, stan, that Lin$pire desktop
comes with "online help at you fingertips"?

while that may be true for some of their OS's, it's not for my copy of
W98se: "You may install and use one copy of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT on a
single computer...". It used to be on K5, which now only has Sarge, now
it's on K7, along with Sarge, Mandrake 10x, and Ubuntu (and its not
happy being a minority- I had to give it it's own private drive). I've
never read anything suggesting this is in violation of the EULA. And
please forgive my scepticism, but unless your experience is extremely
broad, perhaps scholarly, I'd prefer a bit of hard data to back up your
first contention.

who, Fry'$ (surely not!). Lin$pire? They do seem eager to sell Warehouse
subscriptions which I guess includes proprietary stuff, but if you'd care
to elaborate... OTOH, Lin$pire knows up front that x% of copies they're
selling probably won't be used, and their marginal cost is extremely low..

well, if the one line mention gets the user to the help system, I'd say
mission accomplished. Formatting, and installation of another OS, OTOH, is
a bit more complicated. BTW, any mention of dual booting ?

Doesn't Fry's sell various and assorted versions of MS OS's in
nice shiny boxes? What do you suppose people do with those?

sysv-rc-conf; curses based; read man page- I like to run it using -p

DESCRIPTION
sysv-rc-conf gives an easy to use interface for managing
"/etc/rc{run- level}.d/" symlinks. The interface comes in two
different flavors, one that simply allows turning services on or
off and another that allows for more fine tuned management of the
symlinks. It's a replacement for programs like ntsysv(8) or
   rcconf(8).

sysv-rc-conf can also be used at the command line when the desired
changes to the symlinks are already known. The syntax is borrowed
   from chkconfig(8).

my Canon Powershot A75 works great w/Debian, Ubuntu, Mandrake,
Knoppix, Wind^H^H^H^H using gtkam as a gui frontend for direct connect, or
by plugging the compactflash card into a usb card reader (a Sandisk in my
case). It was highly recommended on a couple of review sites, and cost ~
$220 at CompUSA w/ an extra compactflash card as a bonus- two days later,
I saw it at Walmart for $175 , so I coulda gotten camera and much
heftier memory card for less...

http://www.dcresource.com/ which is recommended by gphoto.org, is an
awesome site

gnome-keybinding-properties from the shell and set

Applications->DesctopPreferences->KeyboardShortcuts from the Gnome menu."

I'm using Sarge/Gnome2.8. There is no "text editing shortcuts"
option (both suggested methods invoke the same app). "Help"
indicates this choice should be available. Also tried searching for
anything appropriate in gconf-editor to no avail. Any clues?

Knoppix indeed recognized and initialized my shiny new Sandisk 8-in-1 and
Canon A-75! What's this? uname -r shows a 2.4 kernel- hmmm,
musta entered boot params incorrectly- reboot to 2.6 kernel- same probs.
as in Sarge. Mandrake Move is only live cd I tried with 2.6 kernel that
actually worked, and it worked perfectly (re usb devices; actually, it's
pretty slick overall, and as an (ex) Drakie, I got a bit misty). However,
unable to translate Mandrake to Debian, so a reversion to a 2.4 kernel was
in order (now experiencing a more joyful state of mind). BTW, I'm using
ga-7ixe, so will be keenly watching thread- good luck to us both!!

using 2.4.26-1-k7- tried .27, but it lacked alsa-module deb IIRC

the only boot message line that looks suspicious is

Oct 28 20:04:51 K7Debian kernel: usb-ohci.c: AMD756 erratum 4 workaround

if I have time this weekend, I'll see what I can find... and
*understand*

btw, Suse 9.1 live also recognized my devices, though I had to manually
mount them (unlike Mandrake). All the other live cd's I tried were Debian
based (big shock), and my Ubuntu install has same prob as Sarge, so I'm
suspecting might be Debian specific. Does Slack have live cd? I'll give it
a try if avail with a 2.6 kernel (a good excuse to add to my collection...)

IIRC, I used K3b, I was using LM 9.2. My notes indicate I had to
also install dvd+rw-tools (it's part of the 10 distro- "urpmi
dvd+rw-tools" should work), although I had to build an rpm since I was

just built nvidia drivers (nvidia installer), all I have is stock Debian

Rekall, GPL GUI frontend to xbase, MySQL, PostgreSQL (and some commercial
drivers also). xbase/xbsql is good for lightweight db- it has limited
functionality compared to mysql or postgre, but advantage is it isn't
client/server (Rekall opens the dbf directly), so is simpler to use.

http://www.totalrekall.co.uk/index.php

unfortunately, Debian isn't supported for the $pre-built binaries ;-(

get source and build it yourself:

http://www.rekallrevealed.org/

I've built for Mandrake and Debian (sarge) , using checkinstall to do
final packaging of rpms and debs; I'm not claiming I actually did them
*right* , but they seem to work- point being, I'm a hack, so I figure
anyone has a good shot at success...

pre-built debs (unofficial):

http://www.edgar.org.uk/debian/packages/

I've also heard there's work on official debs, possibly available in sid?
