When I installed unstable I couldn't find a way to do it directly
either. I ended up suing the sarge install business card iso and
doing a dist-upgrade after a minimal sarge install. This may not
work if you are not on broadband but if you aren't on broadband it
probably isn't a great idea to use SID anyway because of the frequent
updates.

Getting Sluggish

2004-09-30 Thread Jeff Golden
Can anyone help with some tips on how to improve my systems
responsiveness? I am using SID on a P42.2GHZ/1GB Ram system. Most
of my problems are with firefox. It sometimes takes a few seconds
just to move between form fields (i click and wait for the cursor to
start blinking in the field). I am also seeing instability in KDE
(usually when browsing media folders), sometimes konqueror will crash.
In additon name resolution in firefox is very slow (several seconds
per new url). I can go out to a shell and ping and get name
resolution nearly instantly.

This is my first foray into debian and my longest into linux (several
previous failed attempts but i haven't booted to windows in over a
month now). I am still quite new at this and just looking for some
advice. I am tempted to take the easy way out and just backup and
re-install but then when it happens again I won't know how to fix it.

I am also considering compiling firefox from source to tryo to fix its
problems. But I am not sure if that will help at all. I am not sure
what to do about KDE.

I apologize if I have missed obvious documentation on the subject but
are there any 'newbie' friendly guides to performance tuning a debian,
or linux in general, system that anyone can point out?

Thanks!
Jeff

This is true but it is rather annoying to have to re-boot into windows
to do simple things like banking or dial into your office. My
solution to the same problem is to utilize Win4Lin (commercial but it
saves me time). It allows me to do the minimal things I need to do
for work and banking quite easily. Also allows me to run Rhapsody
music service. Even supports my VPN client (nortel) and PC Anywhere.
I would suggest having a look at that.

It is probable that TOP is sowing you a combined view for the CPUs.
Hit the 1 key to split the view.

I apologize I read that wrong apparently they haven't been succesful
at a paralell version.

"Q: Does the Avision parallel scanners work?

A: No. I do not own a parallel-port-scanner and Avision refuses to
give me documentation about the parallel and USB protocol they use. I
got private eMails from other people who try to log and "decrypt" the
parallel-port-traffic, but there is no useable code, yet. "

Sorry about that...
