Lyx with typein
I recently decided to add lyx to my debian system. It seems straightforward. However, I tend to make forms with the "\typein" command. When I add this to a lyx document (and mark it as a tex command), I get errors. Any help?? i.b.
Lyx with typein
Okay, everybody says lyx is great, but for the darnest, I can't get it to work with latex's \typein. Here's the text ... Now is the time for all good men to party. \typein[\name]{What is your name?} <--- This marked red for Tex command You, my dear \name\ , are invited. When I try to view or print, On lyx version 0.12 An error box opens and says, There were errors during the Latex run. One error detected you should try to fix it. Dismiss | <---| And then the file shows the word "Error" in a box beside the \typein command. Sorry, I can't be clearer but I've tried this many times. The file works without typein, errors with it. Any ideas? i.b.
Sending messages with xemacs
Just upgraded to debian 2.0 and upgraded my computer. Decided that I got enough speed to look at using xemacs instead of pine. I can't seem to send mail to my isp. It keeps coming back with the smail log showing. "no valid recipients were found for this message" "[EMAIL PROTECTED] ... unknown host. I'm using pine to send this email with no problem. Bo with Wine
Is there a way to keep the bo distribution of debian and install Wine? I was thinking that you might could downgrade and use the older version of libc5 which doesn't conflict w libc6, then just add the libc6 program, make links, and then install wine. Then you could just wait until Hamm becomes Bo again. Anyway, that's my idea, has anybody tried it? There's a memory problem with Netscape 3.01 and there may or not be one with Netscape 4.04. a. The memory problem ***may be solved*** with Sud's script for Netscape 4.04. or the following: #!/bin/bash LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib/netscape MOZILLA_HOME=/usr/local/netscape export LD_LIBRARY_PATH MOZILLA_HOME #ldd /usr/local/netscape/netscape /usr/local/netscape/netscape $* (I haven't had a bug error since using this script and placing netscape by hand. Note I did not use debian, but downloaded the tarzip from Netscape.) b. The memory problem is definitely solved with a similar script for Netscape 3.01-3.04 from the blackthorn site. 2. The java problem for Netscape 3.01-3.04 is never really solved because java applets are software and some are good and some are poorly written. I guarantee that some sites will hang or remove Netscape. 3. Netscape 4.04 handles successfully many more java sites than Netscape 3.01-3.04 without modification. You take a speed penalty of about 10% though. 4. Netscape 3.01-3.04 has a really nasty bug. If you think you're smart and use the options to disable java and javascript, netscape 3.01-3.04 will crash your computer (at least mine). Re: Newbie --Adding Programs To My Debian Base
I've been using debian for about 5 weeks. I'm just starting to think about adding some programs, not in the packages, to my system. One such program came in the form of "program.bin.gz". I figure I can use my debian gunzip to get the first part of it unzipped. I have no idea what to do with the "program.bin". With 500k memory, you can only get about 1/2 page of graphics while printing 300x300. See if you can configure Ghostscript to use less resolution (say 150x300 or something similar). Making X a command center
I'm about 2 months into using debian linux so I still use a lot of dos programs. I devised this shell script that allows me to make X a command center that can call and open full consoles with programs already loaded. It supposedly relieves me from having to open the console, remember which one is open and where to switch to. It's about 90% ripe. This is my first script, so help me out a little. SCRIPT FOLLOWS = # Find out what processes are ongoing # Setup beginning virtual screen, why doesn't 10 work?, oh well. ps >/tmp/process myprog=$1 begnum=11 # (1) Check for command line program name if test -z "$myprog" then exit fi # (2) First check to see if any console programs have been run if test ! -e /tmp/console.dat# If console.dat doesn't exist then echo $myprog $begnum > /tmp/console.dat open -c $begnum -s -l -- $myprog exit fi # (3) If file does exist, then check to see if our program is already # listed in the console.dat grep -hiw $myprog /tmp/console.dat > /tmp/play mycode=$? # (4) Nonsuccessful search, mycode =1 # Let's get the last number in the file, add 1 to it # Add program name and new number to file # Finally open a new virtual number if test "$mycode" -eq 1 then tail -1l /tmp/console.dat > /tmp/play read x y < /tmp/play let "newnum = $y + 1" echo $myprog $newnum >> /tmp/console.dat open -s -c $newnum -l -- $myprog #Open Program in another virtual console exit fi # (5) If successful search, mycode = 0 # Now let's see if the program is a process on the computer # You see, we could have erased it (Our system doesn't automaticly update # the console.dat file) read x y < /tmp/play grep -hiqw $y /tmp/process#Search for the whole process number process=$? # # If both mycode and process register exit codes of 0, we got it if test "$mycode" -eq 0 -a "$process" -eq 0 then switchto $y exit fi # If just mycode shows, use the same VC and restart program if test "$mycode" -eq 0 then read x y < /tmp/play open -s -c $y -l -- $myprog exit fi exit == END OF SCRIPT = Now I've got a few problems? 1) On loading Midnight Commander, function keys don't work 2) Pine, my favorite, no color (even though setterm is there), aborts and disappears 3) I get no login requests (so I don't know if this program), for instance, I would prefer dosemu to be suid root. 4) Do I need to deallocate memory after quitting a file. If so, where are the debian utils for doing so? Any answers, suggestions, or improvements ???
