Multiple hosts & hosts.equiv

1998-09-16 Thread Gunnar Strand
Hi,

I've never connected two or more computers before, and have
questions regarding administration. I now have two Debian Linux
boxes connected via Ethernet and NFS up and running, no problem.

However, I can't get rlogin/rsh/rcp working "passwordlessly".
I have added + in /etc/hosts.equiv on both boxes and gone
through /etc/login.defs with no success. I even get a password
prompt when doing 'rlogin localhost'! I'm sure there is a config
somewhere I've missed. How do you declare a host's chummy friends
besides hosts.equiv?

Secondly, what is the best way to propagate the passwd and group
files? I consider using NIS but haven't put my teeth in it yet.
I though perhaps an 'rcp' would do it, but since I can't rcp due
to the password prompt, well, you get the picture.

Any hints are welcome.

Regards,

/Gunnar

smbmount /usr possible?

1998-06-25 Thread Gunnar Strand
Greetings fellow debian users,

I've recently gotten myself a little local network and have decided
to run my old 486 as server for exporting its large HD by using samba.
My new PC (the client) has both Linux and Win95 bootable + the old
1GB HD. Now, I want to minimize the Linux partition on my client and
smbmount the /usr directory from my server. The target is to share
every little file that is sharable to maximize the usage of the HD.

The best would be (I suppose) to have the same /usr mounted on both
hosts. However, debian seems to use /usr to store vital installation
information which will cause conflicts if I manage to smbmount that
directory.

So, is it possible to only use dselect on my server to install programs
I want to share between the hosts. And is it possible to share the
entire /usr directory?

Problem w/ network card during boot

1998-06-26 Thread Gunnar Strand
Hi,

I have a problem when switching on the power. A module named
"seeq8005" seems to be probing and successfully detecting
"something". I suspect seeq8005 is a network h/w, because it
will be given device eth0. Later in the boot sequence my NE2000
card is successfully probed and given eth1.

When I reboot, seeq8005 either won't probe or fails to probe
because the NE card will be eth0 (as it should be). It is only
after a power on the seeq8005 conflicts w/ my NE card. The
reported io addresses are NOT the same; seeq8005 reports 0x300
and 0x240 for the NE card.

I'm using the latest distribution previous to the 2.0 beta. The
problem appears on both of my installed hosts. I can't any reference
to seeq8005 in the modconf program either.

Anybody got an idea?

Ultraound MAX, gus.o module

1998-11-19 Thread Gunnar Strand
Hi,

I've recompiled my kernel but cannot get the midi for of my
GUS MAX to work. /dev/audio works fine, but I am unable to play
midi files. I have read the /usr/doc/ultra/ docs, but I don't
grasp how to actaully get it to work when recompiling the kernel.

According to the README, support for GUS should _not_ be compiled
into the kernel, but the module gus.o should be used. However,
since I have compiled 2.0.34 and the debian dist is 2.0.32 (HAMM),
I can't insert the gus.o module using gusins. I cannot find a way to
compile it, either.

Is there a simple, clear, step-by-step documentation to get midi to
work for GUS, anywhere? I'd like some fingers before I dig into the
process of recompiling the 'debian' kernel.

Regards,

/Gunnar
