It doesn't render them at all, unless you have a suitable plugin

was due to removal (in many distros) of a package required by the Fancy
plugin (I forget which) that had security issues.

(1) This is, IMO, a Good Thing.

Ask another question.
The system installation wizard has created a non-root user. Will it have
any effect if the user is deleted after the system installation is
complete? (Solved root using key to log in)

Especially with a server, where you don't want the root user logging
in remotely over ssh.

Also available as ASCII:

https://wiki.debian.org/DebianHistory?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=Debian-announcement-1993.txt

Looks like originally it was meant as a kind of Proto-Sid:

"2) Debian will contain the most up-to-date of everything. The system
will be easy to keep up-to-date with a 'upgrading' script in
the base system which will allow complete integration of
 upgrade packages."

Here i see a good argument in case Debian ever discusses to discontinue
the ISO sets with all packages:

"6) Debian will make Linux easier for users who don't have access to the
 Internet. [...]"

Happy Birthday Debian !

Have a nice day :)

Your question is impossible to answer. You will need to give some
information about what you did (with actual detail), what you expected
to happen, and how it went wrong.

I recommend that you have a look at [0] and then ask your question
again.

One thing, however, that I can point out is that upgrading by skipping
major releases is not recommended or supported at all. You should really
upgrade from 9.9 -> 9.13 first, then to 10, then to 11.

It sounds like you are trying to upgrade directly from Debian 9 to
Debian 11. Doing so is not supported because it would skip an
intermediate major Debian release. You have to first follow the
documented upgrade process from Debian 9 to Debian 10 (buster), then
from Debian 10 to Debian 11 (bullseye).

I would also suggest to upgrade all the way to current stable Debian
12 (bookworm), especially if your upgrade cadence is such that you're
still on Debian 9.

How are you launching sway? Typically sway and display managers (gdm,
kdm etc) don't work very well together. So the usual way to launch it is
to stop your display manager, log in on a virtual console and run "sway".

Additionally, you should let the list know what display hardware you
have and, perhaps, what your sway config looks like.

Re: Happy 30 Years Debian Project

2023-08-16 Thread Nate Bargmann
Happy anniversary indeed.

30 years for anything is a significant milestone particularly an all, or
nearly all, volunteer project that doesn't have a single person who is
the benevolent dictator for life but instead has had a number of elected
project leaders over that time. This is very much an accomplishment and
all involved may take a well deserved bow.

My personal foray into Debian began 24 years ago next month, as I
recall. I installed Slink from a pile of floppies onto a castoff IBM
Thinkpad 760ED. Most everything worked except for the internal modem
and sound as both were tied to a proprietary DSP that never had support
added to the kernel. In January 2000 I replaced the by that time
obsolete libc5 based Slackware '96 installation on my desktop and was
running the soon to be stable Potato in short order.

I wish I could say that those original installations had been upgraded
and migrated uninterrupted over the intervening years but I did distro
hopping yet always came back to Debian and also bumped up to amd64 along
the way.

Here's to many more anniversaries.

- Nate

I think the aim is to have a roughly 2 month cycle per point release for
the current stable and a 3-4 month release for "oldstable" during the first
year after a release.

That does mean, if you're unlucky, that there gets to be a double release
every now and again - which means a very long weekend of building and testing.

There are some people who will never ever use a dot-0 release. It's quite
safe to do this in Debian as it will hve had about two years of testing
prior to release.

The idea of a point release is also to periodically round up security fixes
and publish them in a block. If you update regularly - say once a week -
to pick up fixes and patches, then a point release will change very little
indeed.

All the very best, as ever,

Andy
