I believe that was simply an exaggeration. :-)

By the way... The IBM Model M keyboard is an example of one of the
finest keyboards ever made. Unicomp bought the rights to continue
making that same keyboard. By all reports they are excellent.

KVM switches on the other hand often cause trouble. Especially USB
versions. The USB spec is terrible and every vendor implements it
slightly differently. So whether something works or not is usually
based upon the combination of items plugged in together.

If you swap back in the previous netboot image does that restore the
working behavior? If so then that would be a strong indicator of a
bug in the latest files. It would warrant a bug report in that case.

Since I am using a Stable netboot I am not updating it until Wheezy.
So I can't confirm or deny the problem here. But I did have other
comments.

Interesting. I have never had to set that value.

I have always had to set the recipe too. Such as atomic. Or other.

  d-i partman-auto/choose_recipe select atomic

Running Wheezy - kde plasma

Running Debian / windows7 on a KVM switch (IOGEAR miniview 4 port DVI)

Keyboard is from `Unicomp' and weighs about 10 lbs. Its not that old
but is in the old style with serious stand up keys and lots of clatter
when typing.

I've been running thru this switch for several months and a different
switch before that.

I've been using the keyboard for a couple of years.

All equipment has been in use a good while.

I've recently started having a problem where the capslock comes on
(seemingly randomly) but not the led that indicates its on.

I'll be typing and suddenly I'm in caps and have to turn caps lock on
(led comes on) to get back to lowercase.

Even that doesn't really work, since numbers stay upper case to what
ever symbols are the upper case for each (sometimes).

I'm not sure if its related to debian though it did seem to start
following a major update of pkgs. (No I didn't keep a list).

The reason I say I'm not sure is that once it starts, even if I switch
to windows 7 host through the KVM, its still stuck on caps.

Googling on various strings, I see this problem coming up going way
back but not particularly recently or on debian.

After much fiddling, looking for stuck keys, unplugging/replugging
KVM/keyboard it seems to go back to normal, but the last time I
haven't been able to get back to normal so running with numlock and
caps lock turned on to get lowercase, normal shift activity, and
ability to type numbers.

I've been running that way for 2 days this time around. And since it
seems to have stabilized with capslock on and I quit trying
to get it back to normal.

This time the numbers are working normally too, with or without
numlock, long as I keep capslock on.

O.K., thanks a lot. I had problems using 'gmane' and could not find this thread
at once,
switched to the 'flat'-interface then and try replying through it now, too.
It appeared to me already that a 3.2. Kernel was available from
backports.debian.org.,
but I was going to wait, until it arrives in 'wheezy'.
News reached me already, that all user 'must' upgrade from 3.1. to 3.2., as this
is going the new Ubuntu-longterm-supported kernel.
So I suppose, Squeeze is oing to come with a 3.2.x kernel, too.
Will remove any connections to 'wheezy' now from this productive-use machine´s
configuration files.

Greetings

Kind of redundant now that you've used aptitude to upgrade - if you
hadn't I'd have then asked for the output of "apt-get -s upgrade".
In this case it looks I'd ask for the output of:-
# apt-get -sf dist-upgrade

I'd probably put squeeze-backports higher than squeeze (stable), or at
least equal. Maybe see what Andrei suggests.

You can use the Debian news gateway - you can even just respond directly
to through the archive. eg:- go to:-
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2012/01/author.html
find yourself:-
bottom of that page
open the relevant thread:-
(notice how there's four threads instead of just one?)
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2012/01/author.html
go to the bottom of the post and click on one of the "Replyto:" links.
In this example you'd be replying to yourself!
But normally you use the "next in thread" links below it to find someone
else's response to you post (that one it the one I'm replying to)
This method will either open a Reply in claws (keeping the thread
intact) or open a prompt from your browsers asking which program to
associate mailto: links with (choose claws).

> There is far too much traffic on that list of yours.

That sounds reasonable - though I'd suggest you consider a different
strategy for dealing with gmane - you have created several different
threads where there should have been just one. Most people manage to use
gmane without that happening - and broken threads creates an extra level
of difficulty which can cause people to decide it's too much hassle to
try and help you.
Perhaps some of the other gmane users can suggest ways for you to keep
track of threads.

The alternative - whereby you only receive emails to questions you posed
is to use the method I outlined above.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

Re: Capslock mystery - Recent phenomena concerning keyboard

2012-01-31 Thread Jude DaShiell
A slight variant of this also happens in command line mode too. Random
capslock activation does not happen. But once capslock is hit, all
letters are written in uppercase even after capslock is pressed again to
turn it off. Also, the only way to type lower case letters in this mode
is to hold the shift key down as each letter is typed. This is not unique
to debian either. I've made it happen in slackware too and quite a while
ago too, so I suspect it's a long-standing linux kernel bug. On Tue, 31

It's not a card for Pete's sake! It's a CX4 switch module. Hence my
"moron" comment. Why is everyone but me unable to know what this device
is simple by looking at the picture? Maybe this will help:

http://www.netgear.com/business/products/switches/fully-managed-switches/switch-modules/AX744.aspx

> Other than that, I wonder why someone would need a 10 Gbps card without a
> network infrastructure that supports it.

It's ironic that you mention "network infrastructure" in your next
sentence, after failing to realize what the mentioned product is--it IS
infrastructure. This CX4 module plugs into the back of Netgear
switches. It is used for linking two switch stacks together within a
rack or adjacent/nearby racks via a large expensive CX4 copper cable, or
connecting a high performance server or iSCSI NAS appliance to a switch
stack within the datacenter. CX4 is limited to a 15 meter cable length,
about 50 feet. It is rarely used for connecting equipment more than a
few racks apart as fiber or UTP is much more friendly to use in overhead
raceways. The cable cost is very high, $100 for a 10ft cable.

You could start by going here:

http://4mhz.de/debian1215n.html

Not sure how different revision b is from revision n but it's the
closest match in the link below, which is how I got to the page
above.

The 1215n is Intel Atom based, the 1215b is AMD APU (either E450 or C50)
based.

I'm seriously drooling over the E450 powered one, I'm going to drop by a
laptop shop with a debian pendrive to see if things work, if it does &
has an SD card slot that fully swallows an inserted card I'll get one.

http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/asus.html

This is where they have installation instructions for many Asus models.

The machine you are posting from is joule. joule.shaw.ca does not appear
in the headers of your list mails so mailto-mutt must get it from
elsewhere. If you have a mutt configuration file in your home directory
try moving it and retrying.

For your project you might want to know the mutt in testing and unstable
handles mailto: differently from the one in stable. Bug #576313 is a
relevant read.

Gmane means the message comes from gmane, etc.al. It is the best guess by
looking into header field such as 'X-Gmane-NNTP-Posting-Host',
'Injection-Info', and 'NNTP-Posting-Host'. so there were 3327 messages
came from gmane.

> Do you have any figure for point of origin ie. of gmane, google groups

assuming User-Agent string 'Loom' is the gmane web interface, there are
around 16%(14 of 85) gmane users post via web. However, only 2.5%
messages(82 of 3327) from gmane were posted via web. The news/mail user
count is not always accurate because user sometimes switched to other
ways of posting, so does the mua count.

There were only 3 messages with 'X-Nabble-From' header, they must from
Nabble. I didn't see any message from New Generation.

Mmm, depends on what your goal is, but as far as I know backports is not
suitable to be used like that.

In fact, the latest recommendation[1] is to not pin at all, since
backports has priority 100 by default, which is enough to have
backported packages upgraded (in case of bugs), but otherwise the system
stays stable[2]

[1] http://backports-master.debian.org/Instructions/
[2] ... as in the stable release/version/distribution, not "not
crashing" stable ;)

I'm not familiar with any other distro, but I suspect it is due to the
fact that Debian uses free (as in freedom) graphics drivers by default
and some of them still have issues with auto-detection. Please post more
information about your graphics card, like the output of

lspci -nn | grep VGA

and attach your Xorg log (the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log)

Re: Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop overheating on Debian 6.0.1, Linux 3.2.3, low CPU usage, radeon GPU driver

2012-01-31 Thread M Stefan

I did not understand exactly for the things You are fighting w/ but if
You are concerned on CPU too hot - I suggest to check if the modules
are loaded (not only installed on Your system) - so it was w/ mine
inspiron until I set it manually to be loaded.

Thank you for your reply,

The drivers are loaded, I've obtained the listing via lsmod.
Do you have any idea where else should I ask my question for higher chances
of obtaining an answer?

Simply put, the problem is that my Dell Inspiron N5010 (15R) is overheating
on Linux with very low CPU usage, but does not present any issues on
Windows.
I've tried utilities like dellfand and i8kfan for controlling the fans,
but they both claim
that I have only one fan and that it's already at highest speed (not
sure if I have more

than one fan, or if the heating up is caused by the CPU or the GPU).

Dude, calm down... I did not realize it was a specific kind of 10 gigabit

If it was there but is not longer an option it can be a bug, sure.

I told you so because Opera, for instance, provides different printing
options for KDE and GNOME though the reason is unknown to me. So I
thought Firefox could be a similar case...

If you use a UUID in the root=… kernel commandline, /etc/mtab is a
symlink to /proc/mounts, and the initramfs uses busybox (all the case by
default), this is to be expected. The reason is that the root
filesystem is mounted in the initramfs, and busybox's mount
implementation does not canonicalize the /dev/disk/by-uuid path name.
See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=653073.

You can go here, search and read:

http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages

***
Package: xserver-xorg (1:7.5+8+squeeze1)

This package depends on the full suite of the server and drivers for the

***

***
Package: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (1:0.0.15+git20100329+7858345-5)
X.Org X server -- Nouveau display driver (experimental)

This driver for the X.Org X server (see xserver-xorg for a further
description) provides support for NVIDIA Riva, TNT, GeForce, and Quadro
cards.

Although the nouveau project aims to provide full 3D support it is not
yet complete, and these packages do not include any 3D support. Users
requiring 3D support should use the non-free "nvidia" driver.

This package is built from the FreeDesktop.org xf86-video-nouveau driver.
***

In brief, the former will install (by dependencies) the full Xorg server
with all of the VGA drivers while the latter is just a set of FOSS
drivers for nvidia cards.

Mmm, it's weird. I usually make frugal installations for testing
purposes which are performed in English and once the system is
installed I add a Spansih keyboard layout (not even the locale, just
add a new layout to get the right keyboard mapping because my keyboard

the layout on the fly which is is automatically applied :-?

Ouch! That's a bit overwhelming for a keyboard layout issue, but if now
is working it should be fine. Maybe it was a missing package that now

You can use "xrandr" (command line tool) to add the new screen resolution
in the event is has not been automatically detected by your system.

Xrandr is a very powerful tool that allows you to make funny things with
your screen (better if you are using an open source VGA driver, such as
intel, nouveau or radeon) though is not easy to deal with.

Debian wiki has a page for it:

http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12

But you will have more information and specific command line examples by
Googling around. For instance, I found this article very useful ("Adding
undetected resolutions"):

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution

You can download Firefox from upstream and check from there. If the

The Print Selection is also missing in the nightly build of FireFox and

Google show this has been reported many times in the last 4 years. So
they know about it already. Somewhere in the back of my head I keep

it is, or was, gconf.n As I don't rune gnome, tried it for an hour once

Woops, just checked and I had two gome packages installed. Removing

I don't know if that's still an option because gdm3 is an ongoing work

VNC into a Debian Machine

2012-01-31 Thread James Allsopp

Hello,
I really want to be able to use VNC to be able to view the full Gnome
desktop on my laptop. I've been able to view a grey screen and a
terminal, using vnc4server and tigervnc or vinagre, but what I'd like to
be able to do is just view a whole screen as if I was actually there.

I'd like avoid xdmcp if possible, as it would be great to use it from
anywhere, rather than just locally,

Any suggestions, pointers to good tutorials welcome!
Thanks
James

only console login after latest sid upgrade

2012-01-31 Thread Seb
Hi,

I upgraded my sid system on my desktop and laptop this morning and
restarted only to find out I get straight into a console login, not the
usual KDM login window. The upgraded included the latest kernel image
package (3.2.0) and thought that might be the culprit so installed the
previous version (3.1.0) and restarted but ran into the same problem.
Is anyone else experiencing this?

I suspect it is libaudit0. I had the same.

See [1] and [2].

 [1] http://bugs.debian.org/658153
 [2] http://bugs.debian.org/658170

You could either downgrade libaudit0 to 1.7.18-1 or update to
1:1.7.18-1.1 as soon it is build and installed into the archive.

Brilliant, that was precisely the problem. Downgrading libaudit0 did
get me back in business. Thanks, that would have taken hours

I'd of thought you'd be able to have full colour, full screen remote
sessions using those packages... odd.

Perhaps you're not allowing for the differences in resolution and colour
depth.

xdmcp requires UDP, otherwise it's not restricted to local networks.

The proprietary nomachine is also quite good, and good with low

Have you tried installing the vino package? It seems to do exactly what you are
wanting. It looks like when you start vncserver the .xsession file for it
doesn't have a window manager setup to start or perhaps it has a really basic
one like tab. I haven't used vncserver in a few years, so I forget how you
define its equivalent of .xsession, sorry.

I know when I install xfce it uses wicd as well and I need to remove it
and install gnome-networkmanager to get my wireless working. WICD does not
even see my wireless network. So figured it was a bug and I have the same
router and same security configuration as you. So that would be my fix
remove wicd and install network-manager.

Print/Options Print Selections is still missing

You can download Firefox from upstream and check from there. If the
missing option ("print selected") is present here, then try using a new
profile with Iceweasel. If still no luck, you can consider in opening a
bug report at Debian BTS.

The Print Selection is also missing in the nightly build of FireFox and
Aurora.

So it seems to NOT be an iceweasel problem but something else. Now to
find out what that something is.

Isn't linux fun!

Thanks again Camaleon

Wow... if the upstream firefox also lacks for that printing option I
don't even know where to look at (fluxbox, firefox...) :-?

Have you considered in opening a bug report in Firefox's bugzilla? Maybe
they can point you to the right direction.

Prior to the following tests i tried both icewm and blackbox.
The problem, (no Print Selection option available) remains.

I have just completed a test of the following:

Stable running iceweasel 3.5.16 Print Selection available YES
Testing (upgraded from squeeze 6.0.3) iceweasel 8.0-3b1 NO
Testing-2 9 (from Debian testing Cut) iceweasel 8.0-3b1 NO
Sid ( from upgraded debian-6.0.3/wheezt/sid) iceweasel 9.0.1-1 NO
Wheezy/Sid (from upgraded debian-6.0.3/) iceweasel 9.0.1-1 NO

Mozilla firefox iceweasel 9.0.1-1 NO
Mozilla Aurora iceweasel 9.0.1 NO

Note: I could not test printing on Stable due to the cup fixes for a
USB to Parallel adapter are in Wheezy and Sid. I did not check
backports for the required files.

It seems that the problem is upstream Mozilla code, not Debian.

Hope this get fixed sooner or later but I am not holding my breath as,
according to a Google search, this problem has been reported since 2008.

Wayne

Camaleón asked for the goals. I agree with this question.

What version of Debian do you have installed?
What Nvidia graphics?
What computer?
Do you need perfect, very fast 3D acceleration?
What screen resolution will you use?

Depending to the answers one of 3 or 4 drivers might be ok.
Usually people will use the proprietary nvidia driver or the FLOSS
nouveau driver. Sometimes the old nv driver is the best way to go. Very
seldom vesa could be needed.

Ralf

+ 1 to this.

Many thanks to Sven, not only for his work as a package maintainer but
as a contributor on this newsgroup.

The nouveau drivers made my Dell Precision workstation usable for the
last few months of its life. The binary blobs caused all sorts of
headaches with the various DEs I used on that computer (Gnome, LXDE,
Xfce). All of the little gotchas went away when I switched to nouveau.

Yeah, there were a couple of issues with nouveau, too. But -- because it
was open source -- I was able to figure some of them out myself, and get
answers for others -- most notably from Sven, himself. Having a properly
functioning DE is a lot more important for this old curmudgeon than
having 3D acceleration.

Regards,
Gilbert

+1 from me as well. I am happily using the nouveau package and driver

Start with python(2.6), apache2, libapache2-mod-python, and
libapache2-mod-python-doc, after that is depends on what you want to do.

You should also give it a day or two and others will undoubtedly also
give some recommendations.

Read the fine documentation here as a start:-
http://www.modpython.org/

You'll find the following are excellent sources of documentation:-
apache.org
python.org
(they also have mailing lists)

I have debian installed on a Toshiba Equium which I think uses the same
chipset. I had problems with the install but got it sorted out in the
end. There often seem to be issues where networking works during
installation but fails when the new system is booted without the
installation CD. I could have a look at the config and see if anything
springs to mind.

I also recently installed debian on an Acer Aspire One 753 netbook.
Again networking worked during the install, but failed on the newly
booted system. I got it sorted after a bit of a websearch. Details here:

Isn´t using frame buffer compression likely to lower the graphics
performance because of the compression overhead?

I´ve got a Pavilion DV7 with some integrated Intel card that uses the
i915 driver, and it´s an euphemism to say that the graphics performance
is pitifully pathetic compared to the Nvidia GTX470 I´m used to ...

However, this laptop also has a Radeon card built in --- only I can´t
get it to work. Apparently the laptop is MUX-less, so I don´t get any
output to the screen when switching to the discrete card.

There are instructions on [1] how to get the Radeon card to work with
the fglrx drivers. Unfortunately, an outdated version of the intel
drivers seems to be required:

"Regarding the xf86-video-intel package, it is important to use a
version <2.16, as was fortunately noted in the forum post [5] (by
bojojo2020). This is because the current version of ati-drivers, 11.12
doesn't seem to work with newer versions of xf86-video-intel. (I was
initially unsuccessful with 2.17, and in my opinion, this is perhaps the
only detail due to which someone would fail in getting fglrx
running.)"[1]

Debian Testing has version 2.17 of the xserver-xorg-video-intel package
and fglrx-glx in version 11-12-1. I´ve tried the fglrx drivers; they
complain about not finding a library when setting them up, and running
startx only produced a segmentation fault with them. Is there any way to
get the Radeon card to work in Debian Testing?

I didn´t try it for when the page you want to turn into an image doesn´t
fit onto the screen because the page is too long or too wide, your image
will show only the part of the webpage which happens to be displayed on
the screen rather than the whole page: It would be like taking a
screenshot, which I could do without the complication ...

However, I´ve found cutycap, and that seems to do the job nicely :)

I agree. I got this one on the strength of reviews and friends advice
when I grew tired of the sorry flexing, number loosing junk on the
market now.

Its been in use steadily for several mnths... maybe closing in on a
year now and I really like it. Plus in a pinch during pitched battles
with spouse, it makes an excellent self defense implement... it easily
deflects various plastic and glassware missiles... it even proved
effective against the proverbial skillet, but I'll admit it was only a
glancing blow, and it did leave a slight visible ding in the
underside.

There can be a small problem when doing defensive running and using it
like a shield. Bad things can happen when you hit the end of the usb
cable.

Thanks, I found it and tried it, works fine :)

I know this is drifting off topic and I am sorry but I can't resist.
If you have seen it then this is old hat. If you haven't seen it then
it is about time.

Do you see the mail you sent to the list? (If gmail supresses mail you
are supposed to get, like someone mentioned, I won´t use it ...)

This is an interesting post because currently mails I´m sending to the
list seem not to get through. If they did get through, I would receive
them from the list. Has anyone received this message I sent:

From: lee
Subject: tmpfs --- correct entries for /etc/fstab?
To: debian-user@lists.debian.org
Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2012 00:28:09 + (23 hours, 21 minutes, 58 seconds ago)

I can´t find this post in the list, nor any answers to it, on my side,
so I don´t know if it got through.

If you can use a Makefile instead of your script to get the job done,
you could use make -j8 instead.

Excellent, I'll check them out. Not to start a flame-war between python 2 and 3
supporters, or even get too much into python-specifics on a debian list but
should I go with version 2 or just jump into 3? Does it matter?

And you wouldn't want to use it as an offensive weapon: too lethal.

If I understand you correctly, you wish to access what is showing on
your laptop screen.

I've had success with x11vnc from the package with the same name.
After connecting to a machine via ssh, you can use this command to
setup a VNC server which serves up the X session currently on the
display via port 5900.

x11vnc -display :0.0

This command as listed will run without any authentication at all, so
you will need to specify an appropriate authentication method. Note
that when the remote viewer is closed, this command terminates itself.
Setting up an ssh tunnel would also be advisable in order to encrypt
the traffic.

Hi,

to customise dual screen & resolution issue, you can try this utility :
arandr

It's the easiest way for me to customize a dual screen.

I agree. I got this one on the strength of reviews and friends advice
when I grew tired of the sorry flexing, number loosing junk on the
market now.

Its been in use steadily for several mnths... maybe closing in on a
year now and I really like it.

/snip/

I have several model M keyboards--two full size, in regular use, and one
without the number pad, that I'm using now with a home-bound laptop. All
of them were bought at computer flea-markets 10 or more years ago, where
they were already used
product. They will probably be working after I'm dead, if some
numbskull doesn't throw them out for not having windows keys!

There is an outfit called "Clicky Keys"--you can find it on the
net--that refurbs original model M's for sale.

They are kind of noisy for use in a business office, but at home I
wouldn't trade them for anything!
