If you're looking for an operating system that you have to pay only once (if at all) and are allowed to use on all your systems, then almost every Linux distribution is a good option; the most well-known exception being current RedHat Enterprise versions. After all, the nature of the license of most Linux programs requires that this is possible. glibc pthread_join freezing on sarge
Hello all, I'm running a stock sarge machine with the 32bit 2.6.8 kernel on a AMD64 3200+ machine. I'm using some unstable and demudi packages. Problem I'm having is that a few apps (actually almost all my v4l apps) crash when I try and capture video. Actually there is no fault, but the software hangs. I traced it down to the use of pthread_join() which is where the code hangs. (I've been doing a backtrace after manually killing the application) I tried upgrading my libc6 to 2.3.2.ds1-22.d still getting the same crash. Here are a couple examples of traces: (gdb) bt #0 0xe410 in __kernel_vsyscall () #1 0x40128f18 in pthread_join () from /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libpthread.so.0 #2 0x44bd97bd in videoV4L::stopTransfer () from /usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem.pd_linux #3 0x44bd504c in pix_videoNEW::stopRendering () from /usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem.pd_linux #4 0x44b0111e in GemBase::gem_startstopMess () from /usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem.pd_linux #5 0x44b01382 in GemBase::gem_MessCallback () from /usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem.pd_linux #6 0x0809ba47 in pd_typedmess () #7 0x in ?? What version of libc6 should I be using? Are there known bugs with my configuration and pthreads? I'm dependant on getting this machine working, so I hope someone has a suggestion. I'd be happy to do whatever tests to break the issue down further. Thanks all. B. signature.asc Description: PGP signature signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Re: Is there a Debian 3.1 AMD64 iso?
Hi, Joe. According to my hw technician, my mobo+cpu are gone for good, I was just told that. So, if prices are not absurd, I will opt for a amd64 solution to replace the dead system. I will surely ask you for more advice, when getting familiar with 64bit environment. To start with: could you figure out how much performance improvement has the amd64 system, compared to the i386 that you helped set to dualboot? Very thanks to you and everybody here! Joe Smith wrote: - Original Message - From: "Bruno Buys" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Newsgroups: gmane.linux.debian.user Sent: Tuesday, August 30, 2005 6:13 PM Subject: Re: Is there a Debian 3.1 AMD64 iso? Well, as a last resource, one can dualboot the two systems in the same machine? Of course. You can use the same swap partition, of course. ;) Actualy, I recently helped somebody set up a system for dualbooting i386 and AMD64. But perhaps it would be simplier to just create an i386 chroot. This is quite easy, and can be used to run any i386 program. The 64-bit kernel will work just fine with the 32-bit programs. I reccomend doing the chroot. Here is a full walkthrough based on unofficial howto guide, which will install the chroot as '/i386' (short and simple name). As I say below, if you have any questions feel free to email me. [Warning: all of the walkthrough steps are to be done as root, however the utility dchroot will be used to let regular users run programs found in the chroot] [Warning2: The chroot should really be on the same partition as /etc]. First things first: use aptitude or apt-get to install 'dbootstrap' and 'dchroot'. 'mkdir /i386' 'debootstrap --arch i386 sarge /i386 ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian' You can change sarge in that line to any distribution you like. I would reccomend that if you use 'stable' for the main system you use stable for the chroot, likewise with testing, and unstable. You can also choose the mirror you want. Ok, now enter the chroot using: 'chroot /i386' Install any 32 bit programs you want and the libraries you need. You will probably want X11 libs, openoffice, etc. You can install them using apt-get or aptitude. Leave the chroot using 'exit' 'mkdir -p /i386/tmp /i386/proc /i386/home' Now you must add these entrys to /etc/fstab: /home /1386/home none bind0 0 /tmp/i386/tmp none bind0 0 proc/i386/proc proc defaults0 0 Now do something to make sure these commands are run every time the system boots (like add them to /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh): mount /i386/home mount /i386/proc mount /i386/tmp Run those mount commands before continuing. create hard links: 'ln /etc/passwd /i386/etc/passwd' 'ln /etc/shadow /i386/etc/shadow' 'ln /etc/group /i386/etc/group' Ok. Now you should be able to run applications in the chroot. Try running this: 'chroot /i386' 'su - username' #replace username with your non-root username 'export DISPLAY=:0' 'openoffice' openoffice should open. If so close it. 'exit' If all went well you can now setup dchroot so that you can run openoffice without requiring you to switch to root, and manually enter the chroot. To set up dchroot: simply add this line to /etc/dchroot.conf : i386/i386 Ok. Now to run a 32bit program as non-root run 'dchroot -c i386 -d programname' For example to run openoffice you run: 'dchroot -c ia32 -d openoffice'. Pretty easy right? Well we can make it even easier. Create an executable file named /usr/local/bin/do_dchroot that contains: #!/bin/sh exec dchroot -c i386 -d "$(basename $0)" "$@" Ok. Now for any program in the chroot that you will commonly run, simply create a simlink to that script. For example: 'cd /usr/local/bin' 'ln -s do_dchroot openoffice' 'ln -s do_dchroot oowriter' 'ln -s do_dchroot oocalc' You can pass command line arguments to these symlinks just like with the real programs. If you have any questions feel free to email me. ADVANCED: The following steps might let you run some 32 bit applications without chroot or dchroot: Add these lines to /etc/ld.so.conf : /var/chroot/sid-ia32/lib /var/chroot/sid-ia32/usr/lib /var/chroot/sid-ia32/usr/X11R6/lib /var/chroot/sid-ia32/usr/local/lib Run these commands: 'cd /lib' 'ln -s /i386/lib/ld-2.3.2.so ld-linux.so.2' 'ldconfig' THE END -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". You set up ssh with a passphrase, then arrange ssh-agent to run on the backup machine. You'll need to logon *once* to that host and run ssh-add to provide ssh-agent the means to know the key values, which are stored in memory (in a named pipe) rather than on disk. While ssh-agent is a wonderful way to manage user keys it does not work for automated processes such as tasks spawned by cron or such as boot time processes or other fully automated processes. The problem is that an ssh-agent needs a human to type on the keyboard to authenticate. But a fully automated process does not have this capability. How to send hostname through DHCP more often.
I use debian stable (sarge) and the dhcp3-client package. I register my hostname by adding send hostname "foo"; in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf. Everything works fine but for some reason the DHCP/DNS server (which I don't control) loses the hostname registration and the next day I need to connect to my machine using the IP. Once I logon, I do ifup --force eth0 and the hostname is registered again. This is obviously not nice, so is it possible to: 1. configure dhclient to send the hostname at a certain interval? 2. configure dhclient to send just the hostname? 3. control the interval at which dhclient renews the lease and set it to a few hours so that the hostname is sent more frequently? Do you have any other suggestion for approaching this? Again, I cannot touch the server. In the worst case I would probably set a cron job to do "ifup --force eth0" :-(
Re: Sony Memory Stick Pro and Debian
Hi Piotr, If you prefer operating from a shell, then you can try the following: mkdir a_temp_directory # Create a temporary directory dmesg # Find device the stick's been mounted as, e.g. /dev/sdb1 mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 a_temp_directory # Use device returned by dmesg cd a_temp_directory# You should now see contents of stick When you're finished: umount /dev/sdb1 # cd out of a_temp_directory first Good luck, m On 8/31/05, Piotr Kopszak <[EMAIL PROTECTED] > wrote: Dear list, I'm looking for a way to mount on Debian Sony Memory Stick Pro which I use in a Sony Cybershot DSC-F828 Camera. root on LVM
Hello everybody, I tried to convert the root to LVM using LVM10 tools (deb: lvm10) on 2.4.27 kernel (deb: kernel-image-2.4.27-2-686-smp), but after an lvmcreate_initrd and reboot I get: cramfs: wrong magic. Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 3a:00. I searched the web and the only info I found is that it is not possible using Debian unless compiling a custom kernel. Is this correct or do I have other chances? (I tried installing a 2.6.8 kernel on the machine, an HP NetServer LH4, but I got kernel panic messages: Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!) Nate, What type of laptop? I have an HP dv1000 series laptop that I get the same problem. The seg Fault is with S36discover. I am in the process of typing a walkthrough to get around it. The problem is not just discover, it is also hotplug. Hotplug hangs on the older usbcore module in the install kernels on some laptops. "mount -o ro,remount /" 6.> Reboot (you will have to hit the reset button) 7.> The machine will now start normally. go through the base-config to setup the apt repos and then stop. 8.> use apt to install latest discover and hotplug "apt-get update; apt-get install discover2 hotplug" 9.> reboot system. nvidia geforce2 and hard lock-ups
greetings, I've been working on a debootstrap install of what will ultimately be pure sid on an extra partition. Got a base system up and running with no apparent problems, but when I went for an x-windows system I encountered a serious issue: hard lock-up upon starting x. can't ssh in or anything (yes sshd is running ;P ). I've googled a lot and found someone with the same problem that was not apparently resolved: http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2004/10/msg00728.html My problem appears to exactly match his right down to matching xfree86.0.log. logs and lspci below. so I know the thing is do-able 'cause I'm using an HD install of knoppix right now and it works great,,, I tried copying over XF86Config-4 from knoppix partitions, but no go. also follow some of Andrew Schueller(?)'s advice on using nvidia instead of nv to no avail. so I'm looking for some direction and help is appreciated. Re: A lot of noise in my sound card...
Hi friends! Well I changed my /etc/modprobe.d/sound from this: alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0 options snd-intel8x0 index=0 for this: alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0 options snd-intel8x0 index=0 id=i810 buggy_irq=1 And, I booted my computer in single mode and I removed every snd kernel module and intel8x0 module according Richard's reply. Well, unfortunnely, my problem is not solved. But I found something strange now. After those changes, in the text mode my sound carding is working fine. But when I log in Gnome, open a terminal and play same mp3 file using mpg123 the noise come back again. :-( Any suggestion for me? I wasn't asking whether there's an official Debian package for the Sun Java. I knew that's impossible exactly for the reason you explain. What I was asking was whether there are _free_ Java components usable as a browser plugin and if there are, which Debian package contains them. Well, I didn't explicitly say that, but I mentioned the standard Debian way, which usually means that you use official _free_ Debian packages if possible. Thanks for your response, anyway. Name resolver problem after upgrade from woody to sarge
Hi, I have just upgraded my machine at home from woody to sarge and now the name resolution doesn't work anymore. To be more precise, programs such as Mozilla or lynx don't manage to lookup any names, but i can use host or dig or nslookup (or even socket.gethostbyname(...) in Python) without problems. Also, once I have looked up a name using host, for example, then Mozilla can also find it, at least for some minutes of time. I have tried looking in different documents and HOWTO:s and Google but haven't found anything really related. Also, I don't know the inner workings of name resolution in Linux, so I may have missed something obvious. Some facts on my setup: - I use an ADSL connection with a combined ADSL modem/router configured as a DNS relay. - ifup seems to detect this setup correctly and writes nameserver 192.168.1.1 in /etc/resolv.conf - Since I only have 2 machines connected to the router, I haven't setup any DNS for my private network and have simply added a line 192.168.1.2 MatsPC in /etc/hosts At the moment, I don't really have any clue on where to search, so any hints are welcome. /Mats -- = Mats Bengtsson Signal Processing Signals, Sensors and Systems Royal Institute of Technology SE-100 44 STOCKHOLM Sweden Phone: (+46) 8 790 8463 Fax: (+46) 8 790 7260 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] WWW: http://www.s3.kth.se/~mabe = -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I am currently building a debian focused laptop install and help site. If you have installed Debian on a laptop with problems and found soultions, please send me a tarball containing your main configs (modules hotplug/blacklist, X11/XF86config-4, modprobe.d/aliases, etc) and your laptops make and specs (including model number), when I recieve this I will begin to build the database of working system configs and walkthroughs for debian on laptops. Disappearance of Applications/Debian menu in Gnome 2.10/unstable
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 I recently (the last several days) had my Debian menu disappear from my GNOME Applications menu. I checked for bug reports against menu, gnome-menus, and others but nothing looks like. Didn't see anyone else report the issue in the mailing lists, either. [hardware] PCI IDE controller oddity
I just attempted to install an "InClose ID-ATA66-2C PCI IDE Controller", when initially installed and booted up, debian etch finds it. The problem. Any hints on what hoops I have to jump through to get printing to cooperate again with 2.6.8-2-k7 very much appreciated? google and linuxprinting.org aren't much help in that regard (at least not that I could find). 0: for the sole reason of having /proc/sys/vm/swappiness 1: HP Laserjet 4L, cupsys 1.1.23-10, LJET4.PPD, lp0 cheers, &rw -- -- [...] ein gut konfigurierter Windows-Rechner, an dem niemand -- herumspielt, laeuft auch ueber mehrere Tage stabil. -- c't 14/2004, S. 147 pgp7mkMpVgMNW.pgp Description: PGP signature

That is exactly what I am shooting for and want to see. I have been working on changes to the installer and I just started working on a custom cd iso that will use new versions of discover, hotplug, newer kernel modules, and more laptop related modules/drivers. I feel there is a large enough following for Debian on laptops to warent this. But please when done get the configs to me. While you're working on your home network, routers, resolv.conf, ifup/down, etc, use a reliable name server on the public Internet. After everything else is working, *then* worry about a local forwarder. Maybe you don't need one. Don't assume the name server you're told about by DHCP actually works. There are still a lot of name servers around that answer all queries from everywhere. They'll die (or be secured) if somebody publishes software that uses them by default, but short of that the potential for abuse isn't too bad. Pick half a dozen of your favorite ISPs and look up their name servers in whois. Try all the listed name servers. Some will work, some won't. Chances are you'll find at least two that answer queries about unrelated domains as well. A certain large telco on the West coast of the US, that doesn't have any network tech support for its residential DSL customers, has one. Perhaps the last technical person forgot to shut it off when they laid her or him off. The largest cable TV operator in the US, who happens also to be #2 on the Spamhaus.org list, has another. And the #1 spam supporter worldwide (see spamhaus top 10) has two more. Cameron -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

mounting large hfsplus partion
Hi, I have a 300gb drive that I separated into two 150gb partitions: one hfsplus (for macs to backup to) and one ext3. I formatted the hfsplus partion on a mac, but when I mount it using mount -thfsplus /dev/hdc2 /HFS, the partion does not show up being anywhere near 150gb; instead it shows up as being 8.5mb with 3.4mb of that being used by the simple partitioning. I tried to copy data to this partition, but it fills up immediately. Does anyone know how to mount a hfs+ partition and get access to the whole partition? Precisely, becuase it is insanely *stupid* to allow some random host on the network to pop up a window in your GUI. MS must not have been around when the X protocol was being developed, becuase there are many reasons why things like xauth and magic cookies were developed.
