you wrote "Boot the 2.6 kernel in installation, after hardware detection go ontothe console and post the output for `lspci -v` and `lsmod`." Sorry Adam, you've got a newby to install problems here... bear with me! Question: how do I go into console during an install? The system doesn't install, as there are no disks discovered, so I assume you mean some form of install console? I'm *well* out of my area of competence here, so can you give a few more details, pls. I was fumbling around on this last night, googling and anything else that might help, and tried "expert26" install off "etch", and got to a point where I could select drivers for my disks. I saw no drivers in the list that matched, but there was a selection to allow loading off a floppy. Meanwhile, I had emailed ULi, who emailed some drivers back (complements to ULi, I didn't expect a reply either quickly or at all, after all, if they replied to every Joe Soap, they'ed get no work done). Problem is, I don't know how to use them. ftp'ed (binary mode) them off the windows machine they arrived on, onto another Debian box, linux formated a floppy and copied them onto that, but the install program said it wasn't a driver disk, so no joy there... Thanks for your help so far! Thnaks Jim

[OT] Good book about GNU/Linux structure
I would like to read an in depth book about GNU/Linux structure. I mean, about how the parts works together in the big picture. I wouldn't like a book about vi, emacs, bash, awk, iptables rules and so on, because it would just give some hints about these topics (about them entire books have been written). After the reading, I would like to be able to say what will work and what won't removing particular pieces from GNU/Linux (and so, to understand reasons behind problems). Any advice?

Hello. Is there step-by-step guide on building a mail server postfix+spamassassin+clamavd+etc... on the internet? thanks, askar
libxml2-dev vs libxml2-devel
I have installed libxml2-2.6.17-2 which isn't in the offciail debian repository, and I have it successfully installed. Now I need libglademm-2.4-dev installed which depends on libxml2-dev-2.6.17-2 but I get this: libxml2-dev: Depends: libxml2 (= 2.6.16-7) but 2.6.17-2 is to be installed This is because it tries to install libxml2-dev version 2.6.16-7 from the official repository. So downloaded a libxml2-dev as a rpm package, transform it in a deb package with alien and used dpkg-scanpackages then apt-get update. The problem is that apt sees the package obtained from the rpm file as libxml2-devel and not libxml2-dev and that causes apt to try to install libxml2-dev from the official repository. So how can I make apt to recognize the package from the rpm file as libxml2-dev not libxml2-devel.

CD burner and automount experiences/misadventures w/ kernel 2.6.8 on sarge
I just recently upgraded from woody to sarge and struggled to get my CD burner (SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SM-348B, ATAPI) and automount to work. Since I could not find a cogent and concise description in any one document, thought I would share with the list how I finally succeeded with the kernel 2.6.8. I originally thought I would have to upgrade to a more recent version of the kernel since I found numerous references to a problem with the kernel 2.6.8 and atapi cd burners. Fortunately, this turned out not to be the case. Following the Sarge release notes [http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/release-notes.en.txt] for upgrading from a previous release, I upgraded to sarge then installed kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686. I removed all references to ide-scsi from '/etc/lilo.conf' and '/etc/modules' and added ide-cd, ide-disk and ide-generic to '/etc/modules'. Added (or verified) my username was a member of groups: disk, cdrom, floppy, plugdev and adm (not sure if this last one is necessary). Use adduser as root to do this. The gnome-volume-manager provides automount for removable devices. It, in turn, requires udev, d-bus (dbus-1, dbus-glib-1) and HAL. Some (if not all) of these packages were added or upgraded in the distribution upgrade. However, the gnome-volume-manager was not installed to start (auto-magically). I added it to the startup menu for my gnome session using: Applications->Desktop Preferences->Advanced->Sessions (Startup Programs tab) Can now automount pre-recorded CD's and burn new ones using the Nautilus file manager. :-) -- Carl -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". SSH and X11 Forwrding query
Hello: I have used SSH and X Forwarding successfully in the past, but since moving to Sarge, it refuses to co-operate. Either I can't read/understand the documentation or there's something new. >From work, I can ssh or scp to home using a host.domain address. At home I've added 3 lines to my .ssh/config file: Host my_work.dyndns.org User my_user ForwardX11 yes where the host address is another host.domain address that I registered with dyndns.org (great service). My user name and hostname at "my_work" are not the same as at home. Both IP addresses are correctly deduced by DNS from the host.domain's that I registered. Both hosts are behind firewalls and have private addresses (192.168.x.x). When I connect from work, the DISPLAY variable is NOT set. I've tried the command line option as well as the "config" file above. Anyone have any ideas on what I'm doing incorrectly or have knowledge of why this setup will consistently fail? About Debian patch kernel packages.
Hi friends, I need to apply the grsecurity patch and compile a new kernel for a server. In this server, I am using a kernel image from the 2.6.8 version. Then, I downloaded both the kernel-source-2.6.8 package and the kernel-patch-grsecurity2. But I am not able to apply the kernel patch because in the kernel-patch-grsecurity2 package there are not any diff files to kernel 2.6.8, just for other versions like 2.6.11, 2.6.10 and 2.6.7. What do I want to do to resolve this problem?! Can anyone help me, please?! Regards, Jansen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Do you have "X11Forwarding yes" set in /etc/ssh/sshd_config? (Make sure to run "/etc/init.d/ssh restart" if you make changes to that file.) The "ForwardX11 yes" line in your ~/.ssh/config file will only affect _outgoing_ connections from that computer, not incoming. Plus, both "ForwardX11 yes" and -X will only work if the "X11Forwarding yes" line is set in the sshd_config file. I tried to remotely print to the HP from a second system and hit the same problem. A google search indicates it might be an hpijs/gs interaction, so I tried different versions of gs without success. The solution in the archived message was to switch drivers, but that was for a woody install. Thanks for any help. My remote system was missing these packages: libijs-0.35, foomatic-db-hpijs, and hpijs. I had mistakenly assumed apt would handle all relevant dependencies, but apparently this is not the case and CUPS itself does no sanity checking. I now interpret the error messages as indicating a "raw job" resulting from the lack of a complete foomatic install. The lack of error reporting on the remote side is a bit puzzling, although I had forgotten to turn on debug logging there so it's possible it would have been flagged. It seems like a more "in your face" warning or even error message would have been appropriate. FWIW I suspect that my use of the CUPS server-server model, instead of the client-server model is a factor here, requiring the complete set of printing packages. On a side note, I was one of the many who apparenly are unsuccessful setting up the CUPS client-server model. It seems that most users who report problems default to the server-server model, which seems much simpler to set up at the cost of a little more disk space. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I'm sorry your having problems. Here's a debugging list to get started: 1. Are you downloading the netinstall iso from a reliable site? A lot of mirrors are unfortunately broken. 2. Have you verified the md5sum of the CD? 3. Has the iso image been properly burnt? Check to see if there is a single file or multiple files on the CD. It should be the latter. 4. Is it in fact a CD? Some PC will not boot from a DVD. Stupid, but true. 5. Have you been able to boot any other linux distro with that drive, on that PC? 5. Is it definitely a i386 netinstall iso? That certainly makes sense but HOW DO I DO IT? The installer gives me no option either to format (select fstype) the logical volumes nor to specify a mount point. Myself, I use ClamAV, Postfix and SpamAssassin here. IIRC, in the partitioner screen, you will create the partition and when you press enter on it, instead of choosing use as /boot, /usr, or whatever, choose "use as LVM physical volume." After that, you go back to the partitioner and choose "configure LVM" or something like that. You tell it to create a volume group and it will ask you which physical volume(s) to use. Select the one(s) you want and create the volume group with whatever name you like. After that, you create and name the logical volumes. After that, you go back to the partitioner and then the new LVM logical volumes will appear at the bottom of the list. Then you select them one at a time and assign them to the partitions/whatever you want. In my case, I have logical volumes called var, usr, local, and opt in a volume group called vg00. I have / and /boot on their own real partitions, for good measure. In the partitioner, I had to go and select /dev/mapper/vg00-usr and tell it I wanted ext3 and to mount it as /usr. Once I figured out the correct sequence it was not too difficult. Unfortunately that part of the install process seems a little too unintuitive. -Roberto -- Roberto C. >I have the same question wrt firefox and KMail which I'm running in >gnome rather than kde. Interesting. I don't know kmail, but evolution provides no place for configuring this. I thought it might have something to do with the 'preferred applications' in gnome, and or /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser, but changing these (which are set to firefox anyhow) make no difference. when you say 'same question' are you getting the wget->vim result as well? Totally screwed dpkg, I think ...
Hi all, Electric power went down while I was apt-getting dist-upgrade. Of course *the* filesystem that got to be trashed was /var ... Right now I got a parse error in /var/lib/dpkg/available.. Don't throw stones at me, I compounded the problem by deleting the file (yeah I know.. not bright. I figured that I'd get recreated at the next apt-get update).. So now I'm stuck with a system that won't upgrade itself.. Any way to get out of this ? I'm running the unstable branch. Re: what programe like chconfig as in redhat
Khanh Cao Van wrote: > I'm news for debian and used to chkconfig in redhat to manage deamon > scripts to startup at boottime or not . Could you please tell me what > program in debian with the fuction like that ? A couple of points... People usually ask about chkconfig because they are used to other distros where it is very hard to install something later. So they install everything they can at initial system install time and then disable everything. This is not the Debian way. In Debian it is very easy to remove and install software at any time. Therefore there is little need to keep everything installed just in case. In Debian if you don't want a service running one generally removes it with 'apt-get remove'. If you want it running just install it again with 'apt-get install' (or 'aptitude install'). Configuration files are preserved across these actions so this is very easy. In Debian there is no difference by default between the run levels. The default runlevel is 2. Everything is started in that runlevel by default. If you really want to edit runlevels then the two programs useful for this are sysvconf and rcconf. They are quite different. Try them both and use the one you like. apt-get update apt-get install sysvconf rcconf Bob signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Laptop loses sound on reboot
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 I just installed Sarge on my laptop and upgraded to Sid with kernel 2.6.11-1-686. I installed the latest versions of linux-sound-base, alsa-base, libasound2 and alsa-utils and ran alsaconf.
