My personal opinion is that, as long as vendors ship their computers
with preinsalled Microsoft products, there will be users using them. The
sooner the vendors distribute pre-installed desktops/laptops, sooner
will be the cannibalization you are talking about. Actually, some

I think it is the other way around. If the big companies like Dell,
Sony, Toshiba etc., distribute preinstalled Linux systems, then the
change will occur soon.

One might hope so, but many things will have to change. Today, Debian as a
desktop is only practical where there is strong, nearby, technical support.
Clearly you don't like MS Windows (I don't like MS in general) but it works
out of the box for nearly every user and there is a ton of software that the
non-technical person can add-on with no trouble. There is no Debian
equivalent (apt-get or aptitude or synaptic or ...?)

I'd be very interested to know if *anyone* is distributing a Debian system for
the non-technical user -- a basic setup with the os, a gdm, Open Office,
Firefox (with the appropriate plugins and extensions installed), Thunderbird,
along with a plan for painless upgrades and support.

The frame isn't Windows vs Linux. It's Windows vs a tremendously fragmented
Linux community with a myriad of Linux distros, all different. We can't even
agree on Gnome, KDE, or someother GUI. As a geek I love all the options but
it fails as a business plan.

Please, if you see it differently, let me know either on this list or to me
individually.

Andy

That's funny, I would say the exact opposite. Debian can be setup to run
flawlessly, so that users cannot tamper with it. Windows, on the other hand,
needs constant attention to prevent it falling over due to spyware, viruses,
spam, manual software installs and upgrades of using different packaging and
distribution systems, users getting into things they shouldn't, and all sorts
of other issues.

Doesn't this presume a business environment with a support staff? Not
exactly for every home user. But having said that, it seems Windows is
moving in that direction with online "support." I hear about ISPs or
cable companies writing draconian contracts, almost lease agreements,
that are voided by users installing a program. Essentially the
PC becomes an appliance like a cable box that is virtually owned by
the ISP, upgraded without their knowledge, spied on, etc. And maybe,
in that context, Linux wins. It's not really the way I want it to

I see debian getting a foothold at the bottom before the
top.  freegeek.org (where I have done some volunteering, and plan
to do more) has already given away thousands of refurbished computers
with debian installed on them.  Admittedly many of the people do
the volunteer work to get their free computer, and then go, and install
a M$ OS on it, but as debian improves the number of people sticking
with it increases, and the evidence is in the number of people calling
the tech support line.  (only the pre installed debian is
supported).  Free geek hasn't been around all that long, but
already people in other cities have copied the model.  So if you
want to really promote debian this is a good way.  There are other
examples like the cheapo PC's that Fry's sells with Linspire, and HP
selling machines over seas with Ubuntu pre installed, but those aren't
quite debian.
>In 10-15 years time, Do you think that Debian will dominate the>desktop and the server market to the extent that most desktops/laptops

I think many admins respect debian already, but their managers may
still be under the impression that debian is a "hobby distro".
Cannonical is helping to change this impression with their commercial
support of an almost debian distro.  HP has already adopted it as
I mentioned earlier.  Xandros is another debian derivative that
has gained a lot of popularity.  At Fry's it filled the top shelf
the last time I was there.  Linspire had half a shelf, and SuSe
the bottom half of the section with all the rest filled in with other
random distros.  So I would say that debian derivatives may
already have a substantial foothold in the commercial sector.
Once people get used to them it won't be such a huge leap to go to
debian.
I don't know if debian itself will dominate, but I
think in 10 years linux on the desktop is likely to be common place,
and I think that a combination of debian, and debian derivatives are
likely to have a significant share of the pie.  It is hard to say
though.  A year ago who would have thought that ubuntu would
spring out of no where, and in the course of a year be the most common
distro on the desktops of grandparents, and significant others of
geeks.  And all they did was provide funding for debian developers
so that they could work on it full time, sell professional support
contracts, provide helpful, and easy to use communication tools for new
users, clean up the interface a little, speed up the release cycle, and
ship free CDs.  I don't think any of these tasks are beyond the
abilities of this community.  I think it is up the community
whether debian becomes dominant or not.  If the debian community
builds what people want, and need then, the the people only need to be
convinced to try it, and they will stay.

Not necessarily. It could be setup for any purpose; you only need to talk to
the customer, find out what they need, and configure correctly so that their
needs are met. If their needs are met, they have no need to alter anything.
If their needs change, they still have the choice of seeking out an expert to
adjust things for them (just as they would seek out an expert to adjust their
car, or anything else they have an incomplete personal knowledge of), or they
can choose to try it themselves and risk screwing up.

Postfix/Sarge: permissions up the woopee

2005-06-26 Thread Robert S
I have just been investigating postfix as a "simpler" alternative to
sendmail on sarge. My syslog is full of messages like:

Jun 26 18:02:30 debian postfix/smtpd[5028]: fatal: open lock file
pid/inet.smtp: cannot create file exclusively: No such file or directory
Jun 26 18:02:31 debian postfix/master[2740]: warning: process
/usr/lib/postfix/smtpd pid 5028 exit status 1
Jun 26 18:02:31 debian postfix/master[2740]: warning:
/usr/lib/postfix/smtpd: bad command startup -- throttling
Jun 26 18:02:48 debian postfix/master[2740]: warning:
master_wakeup_timer_event: service public/pickup: No such file or directory

I've tried tricks like # postfix set-permissions
.. which gives the following:
chown: cannot access `/usr/lib/postfix/dict_ldap.so': No such file or
directory

.. but still no luck.

My main.cf (NB: mydomain.com.au is fictitious):

smtpd_banner = $myhostname ESMTP $mail_name (Debian/GNU)
biff = no
append_dot_mydomain = no
myhostname = debian
alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases
alias_database = hash:/etc/aliases
myorigin = /etc/mailname
mydestination = mydomain.com.au, debian.mydomain.com.au,
localhost.mydomain.com.au, localhost, debian
relayhost =
mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8 192.168.2.0/24
mailbox_command = procmail -a "$EXTENSION"
mailbox_size_limit = 0
recipient_delimiter = +
inet_interfaces = all
mail_owner = postfix
setgid_group = postdrop
queue_directory = /var/spool/postfix

Has anybody got this working??? I get the impression that most problems are
due to the fact that postfix is running in a chrooted environment.

because  my  last  attempt  worked though it
got a  kernel  panic when I tried to boot to it.  I

If you still use the Woody installation kernel, you should upgrade to

That's the OSS driver.

That installed the alsa-base package. You still need the alsa-modules
(that you need to compile yourself, e.g. using module-assistant), and
you probably also want to install alsa-oss (for OSS compatibility) and
alsa-utils (includes alsamixer, by default your card is mute).

> but alsaconf does not detect the es1371.

Because you are missing the alsa-modules or your card is blocked by the
OSS driver I think. The easiest way to get ALSA working is probably to
install some 2.6.8-2 kernel image (already includes alsa modules) and
hotplug, or some 2.4.27 kernel image, the matching alsa-modules-2.4.27
package, and discover. hotplug and/or discover will load the drivers
when you boot, all you need to do is to make sure that the OSS es1372
driver is not in your /etc/modules.

Sarge .config mismatch?

2005-06-26 Thread Chris Phillips
Hi all,

I have just installed Sarge with the 2.4.27 kernel
(2.4.27-2-386). I have been having a lot of trouble
building custom kernels. I have used my usual
technique of copying the the config file from the
running kernel and modifying as needed. To don this I
copied
/boot/config-2.4.27-2-386 as the starting point.

However this has not been working well (kernel panics
etc). Looking into the problem it seems to be clear to
me that the config-2.4.27-2-386 does *not* correspond
to what was used to compile kernel-image-2.4.27-2-386
(basically the config file has numerous modules
activated that are not present in the
/lib/modules/2.4.27-2-386.

Can anyone comment or tell me where to find the
correct config file for the supplied kernel images.

Thanks
Chris Phillips

DRM failure with ATI radeon 9200 and Kernel 2.6

2005-06-26 Thread Terry Hancock
Hello!

Hardware acceleration (DRI) is not working with my ATI Radeon 9200 card
on a fresh install of Debian Sarge (3.1), using the AMD 64 build of Kernel 2.6.

From /var/log/XFree86.0.log I'm seeing this message:
"""
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] drmSetBusid failed (5, PCI:1:0:0), Invalid argument
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI.
"""

Googling, I found some references to a similar problem with the same
driver when gcc 3 was used to compile the module (or when it was
mixed with a kernel built with 2.95?). However, that was a "Permission
denied" error instead of "Invalid argument". That was with Debian
"unstable" in 2003, which probably was "Sarge", IIRC, although given
that there were such problems, it seems unlikely that it would've gone
unchanged.

This line has been reported with "Invalid argument" for some other drivers,
but so far, I haven't found a similar report for the radeon. Unfortunately,
the only sites I found are in German and Russian, which I don't speak, so
I can't really follow the discussion, so I'm just guessing based on the
log messages they posted.

The XF86Config-4 file has a very simple entry for DRI:
"""
Section "DRI"
Mode0666
EndSection
"""
so I don't *think* it's a problem with the configuration.

That leaves me with the possibility of a (probably different) compiler issue.
How can I tell which compiler built the kernel and radeon modules that
I'm using?

What exactly is the "Invalid argument" message I'm seeing? I'm guessing
this might be a C API mismatch? Or maybe there is something being passed
from a config file that I can change?

Any recommendations for what to try next?

Any ideas appreciated,
Terry

Howto find and remove unused libraries?

2005-06-26 Thread fraz
How can I find libraries etc that were installed as dependencies, but
which currently have no "dependants" installed? IE the package that
caused apt to install them isn't installed anymore.

I've been apt-getting and removing packages on my system for the last 4
years. And I suspect there is a lot of unused crud. For future reference
is there a better way to remove packages so the unused dependencies are
also removed? Is "dpkg -P" equivalent to "apt-get remove"?

Thanks,

You might want to look at the wxWindows/wxWidgets library (it changed its
name recently). It does run on Linux, Windows, Mac, and a variety of Unixes.

But it does stick you with the misfortune of programming in C++.
There does seem to be a Python binding, though.

But is there any problem getting your clients to use Sun's Java?

Got to them. Explicitly requested a few packages, did "U" in aptitude
twice, explicitly installed and recofigured gdm to be my display manager,
and still didn't get to successfully log in. One minutes after logging in,
a message came up on the screen warning me that my session had lasted
less than ten seconds. Used gdm to switch to icewm (which I had thought
was default, and everything worked. The system even seems faster than
it was under woody, yes, using icewm too.

yup. check package named deborphan out. then - use ncurses based orphaner
(with options --guess-all --purge i.e) binary.

And... well... hm... let say "dpkg -P" is equivalent to "apt-get remove".

Try deborphan.
If you're testing (install/uninstall) many packages, try debfoster.

I've been apt-getting and removing packages on my system for the last 4
years. And I suspect there is a lot of unused crud. For future reference
is there a better way to remove packages so the unused dependencies are
also removed? Is "dpkg -P" equivalent to "apt-get remove"?

Thanks,
fraz

Hi,

quite easy one ;-)

# apt-get install deborphan
# man deborphan
# deborphan

I tend to use:
# apt-get -s remove $(deborphan)
and if I'm happy with the result:
# apt-get --purge remove $(deborphan)

Hope this helps,

Thanks all!

98 Megs freed! My root partition was getting a little tight. I knew

Some of it was old -dev packages so I could compile programs from the

when I had KDE. I'll look into debfoster for the future too.

If you use aptitude to install packages, it will remember which packages
have been installed just because something you really wanted depended on
it. If you decide to remove that package later, it will remove its
dependencies as well (if there aren't other packages still depending on
it).

Beware that aptitude in its default configuration always treats
packages' recommends as if they were dependencies. You can easily switch
it off in the options menu when starting aptitude with no arguments.

Note the use of backtics as opposed to quotes here:
wajig purge `deborphan`
apt-get remove --purge `deborphan`

We are not removing deborphan here; it creates a list.

Deborphan and debfoster are very handy, although incompatible with
aptitude (which will re-install what they removed). Wajig has a plethoria
of options, check it out.

Debfoster will go through your entire system and ask about each package
(and dependancies). The first time use will be time consuming, be
prepared for it. You can quit and come back later. Another useful tool
is called "cruft".

Hope this helps. :-)

Where did you copy the file to? You need to copy it to
/path/to/kernel-source/.config and then run make oldconfig. You also
need to build an initrd for the kernel (e.g. make-kpkg clean; make-kpkg
--initrd --revision 1.0 -r fakeroot kernel_image)

Need help with samsung ML-2250

2005-06-26 Thread John Foster
I have a spanking new Samsung ML-2250 printer installed. I set it up (Debian
Unstable with KDE) and I had to use a driver from Samsung [who knew?] yep
guys they actually have a Gnome based installer on the factory Cd & get this
it says along with others that it is compatible with Debian 2.2.. The problem
is I use KDE and so I used the .ppd file from the cd & set up the driver with
KDE's installer. I actually got it to work though incorrectly on the first
try but I had set up the wrong driver so I did it again with the correct
driver & voila it immediately set up and recognized the printer. I then tried
to print a test page but no job was generated. I am using the CUPS system.
Anyone have any experience with this printer. Any suggestions as to what I am
doing wrong . I do not want to set up a Gnome system just to use their
installer.

I looked at wxWindows, but at the time they had bindings for Perl (the
language I was using and had learned -- other than Javascript/HTML) for Linux
and Windows, but not Mac.

When I started this, I did my first program in TCL (hated it, but it had what
I needed). Then I saw "Learning Perl" on special for $7 at a store. At that
time I was broke, so that was a real deal. I bought it and learned Perl in
something like 2-3 hours (it took me 3 weeks to learn Java enough to
understand OOP, which I had never used before). I don't know if I would have
understood Python at the first, but it would have been a huge help if I had
learned it instead of Perl, since I know Python has bindings for many cross
platform GUIs. But Java has worked well and I like Perl. It would be nice,
though, to install binaries on a client's system -- just one less extra
program to install.

> But is there any problem getting your clients to use Sun's Java?

There's no problem with getting them to use it. My program has to install
Sun's JVM, OpenOffice, and itself. I want as small a footprint as possible.
For example, one client had a friend install a new printer for him, and my
program stopped working. I logged in to his system with TightVNC and found
that when they installed the printer, it wiped out OOo. I don't know if his
friend did it, or if it was one of those stupid Windows things. I also
wouldn't want to deal with some older, obsolete program that tries to get him
to use an older version of Java. I know that should not happen, but I
remember it happening to me a few years back on Windows.

Hal

As user alan I selected update manager from the eclipse help/software

Thinking this was a permissions problem on /usr/share/eclipse, I logged in as

This is the netatalk service. Which allows your system to act as

Just remove it from your rc.d and it won't start on boot up.

Alternative to mkisofs graft points

2005-06-26 Thread David Berg
I am trying to hammer out some commands to backup my drive to DVD. I
would like to place one or two partitons on each dvd as space allows.
This is the command I tried first:

growisofs -z /dev/dvd /home /usr

This almost gave me what I wanted but I lost the home and usr
directories and only got their contents. I know I can use
graft-points to place their contents in separate directories but I
still lose the permissions and such for the directory. Is there a way
I can dump the whole directory including the directory to the disk?
Or even to dump the whole partition the same way. Being able to dump
the partition would be nice for when I back up the root partition.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

havent't tried them but installed--very large packages.

Final analysis--maybe the only real show in town. BTW, Swing is very versatile
but is a paradigm shift from the Microsoft's-style APIs.

This is a fun topic to knosh, but most discussions presume that market
dominance is important to the survival of a distribution. Debian seems
to have a stable and slowly growing population of supporters. To me,
the important feature of Debian is that it is the place where a person
can get started on learning how to control ones own computing environment.
For this reason alone, it will survive and flourish. Specialize, locked-
down distributions also have a future, but theirs depends on sys-admins
of varying degrees of technical competence choosing it for their
friends and relatives. Debian's future is with really sensible sys-admins
who chose it for their own computers. This will always be a niche market,
but a niche market that will never shrink to the point of being unsustainable.

If advocates of market dominance infiltrate and subvert Debian, the real
Debian target audience will move away and coalesce around some other name,
and it will be obvious that such has happened.

Concerning Debian displacing Windoze. I think there will always be a market for
software targeted at business people who feel that they must pay top dollar
because the price they pay for a thing is their only assurance that it
is a quality product.

What might be a problem for Debian is software patents. Patent law is full
of bad decisions and is getting worse.

But on OP's main point. Dominance will come, or not, for reasons that have
nothing to do with quality, IMHO.

Which is to say that the correct modules will be loaded when the card is
inserted. Additional settings (essid, encryption keys, etc.) are set in
/etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts, if needed. You may also need to list an
entry in /etc/network/interfaces (I did, but my configuration in
wireless.opts may be incomplete).

newbie can't install 3.1

2005-06-26 Thread Dylan Evans
I don't know much, and figured the best way to learn linux is by having it.
Unfortunately, the installation looked like it only half succeeded. The gui
won't work, and it won't auto-config my network card (I'm often on a big
lan, and windows works). Of that I am certain, and other things might not
work either. I'm seeing a lot of "blabbedy blah failed to load" or similar
in the boot-up process. Unfortunately, I can't take screenshots to
troubleshoot, because I have to reboot to run windows, the OS where I can
get on the internet, and therefore any possible support. Any help would be
most appreciated. I'm sorry if I'm asking the wrong people, but I just
haven't seen any newbie faqs or mailing lists.

I'm at a loss. Sorry, but as I wrote privately pon is its own dialer
and there are many other dialers in Debian. You might use them to
verify it's wvdial-specific, then file a seperate bug report.

Ok, I replied to your previous message before reading this one. Thanks
for your help and I'll keep
trying to find a fix. However, I'm not going to file a bug report as
this issue has existed since Debian
testing and many bug reports should have been reported and solved before
sarge stable was released.

That's Debian's fault not mine. Thanks again for your efforts,

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Japanese input

2005-06-26 Thread Eric P
I installed Debian a few weeks back in Japanese.

This installed Canna (which correctly starts up as a service on boot).
Also, Kinput (kinput2-canna-wnn) and Freewnn-jserver (not sure what this
does) were installed.

Entering the following 2 commands on the command line (inside X) gets
kinput2 up and running, and any programs ran from this terminal will now
accept Japanese input (if they're capable of such).
$ pidof kinput2 >/dev/null || kinput2 &
$ export [EMAIL PROTECTED]

But I'd like to have these commands executed somewhere so Japanese input
is available in X when I log in.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for reading!

Personally I used aptitude for this. I simply marked the libraries branch

Hi Dylan
You have not given us any info to help you. Just saying that it does
not work, does not solve the problem. Please give us more info. The
following would be a starting point.

1) From where did you download the installation files?

2) What method are you using to install - floppies/cd images/net
installation image/usb/remote network ...?

3) What is your hardware? What is your network card? What is the
configuration of the system? Is it a desktop or laptop?

We can start from there and figure out what the cause of problem really is!

So, you have an Intel 8xxx integrated chipset. That probably means
you'll need to go into the computer's BIOS and make sure the video RAM
is set to something larger than 1 MB.

My suspicion it that you're tinkering with the older, "not generally
used anymore except by those who know what they're doing", "XF86Config"
file. Newer versions of X use "XF86Config-4". When you start X, it's
reading the -4 file, and ignoring the tinkering you've been doing.

/dev/input/mice is, I believe, included as a possible mice in the
default XF86Config-4 file as configured by Debian nowadays. There may be
another mouse section also, which is reading your mouse.

At a command prompt, as root, try the commands:

#apt-get install aptitude
#aptitude install x-window-system kde gnome icewm wmaker fluxbox

(This assumes you've got plenty of free drive space, say a couple of
hundred megs. If not, the second command might should be "aptitude
install x-window-system icewm".)

Then try:

#/etc/init.d/kdm start

If that doesn't bring up a graphical login, repeat, and try gdm, or wdm,
or xdm instead of kdm. If none of those work, try "startx".

If all of the above fails to get X working for you, please post the
lines marked with (EE) from /var/log/XFree86.0.log. You can copy this
file to your shared Windows partition (or a Flashfob, floppy, etc) to
get to the file when booted into Windows.

What does the network-related line from the output of "lspci" say is its
chipset?

Sarge configuration: adding a sound card

2005-06-26 Thread dasa
Greetings Debian users,

First off, I've upgraded to Sarge over the weekend, and the install went
smoothly. I actually I reinstalled due to variety of factors, and didn't
encounter the possible upgrade problems that was mentioned in in the
development announcement list. Kudos to Debian team, with special mention
to the installer team.

With that out of the way, I have added a sound card after the installation,
and am puzzled as to how the sound support plumbing is implemented in Sarge.
The card is Creative PCI128, and I am using kernel 2.4.27-2 with the driver
es1371.

I think, during Sarge install, the installer asked coupla questions about
sound support, but at the time, the machine did not have sound card, so I
answered something like "no sound" (not quite sure what my reponses were).
Now, I added the card, and I am noticing two things:

1. CD Player (from X/GNOME) is able to put out output, but the volume is
rather low, and my Volume Control tells me there is no mixer/device
available.

2. XMMS, when trying to play mp3 stream, complains about sound card
configuration, including blockage and output plug-in.

My guess is that there is a layer of software packages that abstract the
access to sound card, but I am unfortunately ignorant of recent sound
support in Debian/Linux space. What are the packages I should install? Any
pointers/tips as to their configuration would be much appreciated as well.

Also, more general questions: What is the debian installer that I can run
in instances like this, to ease configuration when hardware profile has been
updated after the initial installation?

Hope you don't find this long questions too annoying. Any
information/tip/help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Announcing a new book: The Debian System -- Concepts and Techniques

2005-06-26 Thread martin f krafft
Dear all,

I am pleased to announce the availability of my new (English) book
"The Debian System", which Open Source Press[0] introduced at the
Linuxtag 2005. I would like to thank all who have followed its
development over the last year, and apologise for the delay and the
long wait you have endured. As opposed to the initially planned 350
pages, I am proud to offer a total of 608 now, so the wait wasn't
for nothing. You can find more information about the book on its web
site[1].

  0. http://www.opensourcepress.de [German only -- for now]
  1. http://debianbook.info

The book is not a regular user's handbook, but rather a book for
people who want to understand and make more out of their Debian
installation(s). It explains the systems's (and project's) concepts
and analyses the techniques that make up the Debian Way of system
administration -- you will not find any discussion of Linux tools or
concepts, graphical desktop environments, server software, or user
programmes in here! Just 608 pages of pure Debian, written for the
Linux/Unix administrators switching to Debian and existing Debian
users alike.

In addition to examples and common pitfalls, the book explains just
why the Debian developers chose certain approaches over others. As
it explores the motivations behind the Debian solutions, the reader
is given a peek at the level of experience and sophistication that
has flowed into the various system components, and s/he learns to
embrace their elegance. This book aims to be the resource on Debian
GNU/Linux as well as an enticing companion on one's path towards
advanced Debian administration.

The hardcover edition will be available in stores in the beginning
of July. A list of online shops stocking it is kept up to date on
the web site[2] (please let me know which ones I'm missing).

  2. http://debiansystem.info/order

An announcement mailing list[3] exists, as well as an RSS feed[4] of
updates (errata & changes), news and events related to the book, and
quotes about it. There is even a forum[5] (currently based on
experimental software though).

  3. http://lists.madduck.net/mailman/listinfo/debianbook-announce
  4. http://debiansystem.info/updates/RSS

I would herewith also like to thank all who have made this book
possible: all contributors to the Debian project, and each one of
the individuals who have worked on parts of the text with me to get
it to where it is now. I am also greatly indebted to my publisher,
Open Source Press[6], who has simply spoiled me with this first book
of mine.

  6. http://www.opensourcepress.de [German only -- for now]

I am also greatly indebted to the Zope[7], Plone[8], and Apache[9]
projects for the products that power the book's web site.

Unless the file has been manually tweaked, "dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xfree86" or "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-common" is probably what
you want, depending on which part of X you're reconfiguring.

It would help if you could confirm that your card has an Intel chip set.
Assuming it does, the alsa driver ought to be snd_intel8x0. You can find
instructions here:
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=SiS&card=SiS+745.&chip=SI7012&module=intel8x0
You may want to download the latest version of alsa-drivers and compile
them yourself (you'll need your kernel-image and kernel-source to do this).
Cheers,
Jonathan

Are you using cups? Did you install the cupsys-client in addition to
the cupsys package?

Could be a permission problem with your /dev/usb/lp0 port .. try
'chmod 666 /dev/usb/lp0' and see if that helps. Also, you can
'adduser lpadmin' and reboot. If you're running a 2.6
kernel with udev enabled, you'll have to modify some
/etc/udev/..files.. to get the changed permissions to come back on the
next boot.

On the Desktop, when I try to enter the trash folder, it says: Wait.
I've got two trash cans again. One is trash.dektop and one is Trash.
Both do not work. Both have the same url: trash:/ . What can I do?

P. S.: I still have that PPP1 problem.

Thanks in advance.

I keep getting the following message showing up on my root consoles:

> svc: bad direction 268435456, dropping request

It's been a nuisance during upgrade, because when aptitude decides to
ask me a configuration question while I'm eating dinner, sometimes
the question is hopelessly obscured by the time I have to answer it.
I can only hope the question wasn't really important and press return.
(sometimes control-L helps. Sometimes not).

What is svc?
What piece of the system emits this?
What kind of requests are being processed?
Is it a problem I can fix?
Or should I just find a way of redirecting
the message to a safer place?
I'm using kernel vmlinuz-2.4.16-586. Would a newer kernel help?

I googled, and found several discussions that seemed to ask
nore thatn answer. The only ultimate cause I found rumoured
as a possibility as a LAN with duplicate IP numbers. I don't
have that problem.

I'll give aptitude another go in the future. I gave up on higher level
tools after experiencing deselect (back in the days of potato). I found
apt-get and dpkg much simpler. :) debfoster and wajig also look useful.

Freeze (system or just USB subsystem) on USB access

2005-06-26 Thread Carl Fink
My current Testing box has two symptoms, both of which I've seen for months.

One, any attempt to USB sync my Palm Tungsten T3 freezes the machine within
a few seconds.

Two, copying files to or deleting files from a USB-mounted drive freezes the
USB subsystem. Sometimes I get nothing in the logs, sometimes this:

Jun 26 22:24:21 localhost kernel: SCSI error : <0 0 0 2> return code = 0x802
Jun 26 22:24:21 localhost kernel: Current sdc: sense key Hardware Error
Jun 26 22:24:21 localhost kernel: Additional sense: Data phase error
Jun 26 22:24:21 localhost kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdc, sector 238
Jun 26 22:24:21 localhost kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on sdc1

The above repeats many times.

After the above messages appear (or even when they don't) the process trying
to use the USB freezes. It doesn't become a zombie, it's just in an
unkillable wait state. Apparently the USB never returns some signal it's
looking for.

I tried upgrading my kernel from 2.6.8 to 2.6.11-1 (Debian version for K7)
in the hope that it was a kernel problem. If so, it isn't fixed in that
upgrade.

I've swapped my USB hub out, so that isn't likely to be it.

The very same USB peripherals work fine on my other Debian Testing system, a
laptop.

I suspect hardware, but I thought I'd ask the assembled minds here if
there's any other software stuff I should try before pricing motherboards.

Thanks.

Jeff Elkins wrote:

The Linux kernel default console logging is 8 so that all messages are
logged to the console. At least one other distro sets this to 3 in
/etc/syscontrol/init and so users there never see console messages.

A firewall on the Internet today is always flooded with probes.
People are always pulling on the door and trying to lift the windows.
The logging to the console causes messages to be printed on the
console so often that it is virtually useless. This is arguably a
system policy decision.

Debian does not make this policy anywhere else that I can find and the
system uses the Linux kernel default. Using the kernel default is
arguably a safe choice for the system but possibly unpleasant for the
user of the kernel. This is not normally an issue but when running an
active firewall it does tend to flood the console with information.

I am using shorewall, a very nice firewall packge. I highly recommend it.
Therefore I always set the following in the '/etc/shorewall/init'
shorewall init file to set the console logging level to something a
little more quiet. This avoids logging packet messages to the
console. They are still logged normally to syslog. I prefer
KERN_NOTICE level 5. Setting it to 3 would pretty much turn off
console messages.

  dmesg -n5

You can find the kernel logging levels in the linux/kernel.h file.

  #define KERN_EMERG   "<0>" /* system is unusable*/
  #define KERN_ALERT   "<1>" /* action must be taken immediately  */
  #define KERN_CRIT"<2>" /* critical conditions   */

James Buchanan wrote:

Under what circumstances? I will assume you are trying to log into
kdm, gdm, or xdm as that seems typical for people asking your
question.

If you search the mailing list archive for xsession you will find lots
of previous discussion about it. But it seems to have been a while.
Even though I use fvwm myself I am going to answer this as if it were
a kde user. It is all the same, really.

You can have your .bash_profile environment by starting a login shell.
Create ~/.xsession with the following:

  #!/bin/bash --login
exec x-session-manager # or gnome-session or startkde or fvwm or whatever.

Make sure it is executable or it will have no effect.

  chmod a+x ~/.xsession

Then when you log into kdm or gdm or xdm be sure to select "default"
for the session type. That will run the ~/.xsession as a script and
it will read your ~/.bash_profile and launch your window manager and
everything will inherit.

You can stop reading now. But for those interested in further details
here is some more low level information.

This is by the design of the KDE folks upstream. Please see this KDE
FAQ entry.

  http://www.kde.org/documentation/faq/configure.html#id2913380

9.7. KDE (kdm) does not read my .bash_profile!". The login
managers xdm and kdm do not run a login shell, so .profile,
.bash_profile, etc. are not sourced. When the user logs in,
xdm runs Xstartup as root and then Xsession as user. So the
normal practice is to add statements in Xsession to source the
user profile. Please edit your Xsession and .xsession files.

I don't particularly like the way KDM/KDE is set up in this regard.
But changes should happen upstream in order to change and improve this
situation.

martin f krafft previously posted a bug against kdm and there has been
some discussion logged. I just posted a summary of the various d-u
discussions there.

  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=250765

I like the technique of using #!/bin/bash for Xsession and then using
'exec -l' to start the shell. It seems like a better solution than
~/.xsession using a login shell. It promotes compatibility between
distros. It solves a long running problem for newbies. It loads the
login environment regardless of using [gkx]dm 'default' or selecting a
specific window manager.

Now that sarge is out it would be good to drive on this again. But
soon there will be the transition to x.org packages. So I will hold
myself back until I can look to see how the x.org packages are
organized. That would be the place to fix this if it needs fixing
there.

You probably have not installed the header files needed to compile

Let me correct my quotation mistakes there.

  echo "echo test | mailx -s test $(whoami)" | at now + 1 minute
  echo "echo reminder | mailx -s reminder $(whoami)" | at 8 am
  echo "{ echo stuff; echo more stuff ;} | mailx -s stuff $(whoami)" | at 10:30

Well, I suppose, but this is all automatic. To my knowledge, I haven't
specified it anywhere. One thing bothers me a little --- this is an AGP card,
why is the bus id a PCI specification? Is that part normal?

There is a series of lines in the XFree86.0.log file which appears to show the
autodetection process:
"""
drmOpenDevice: minor is 0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
drmOpenDevice: minor is 0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
drmOpenDevice: minor is 0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 5, (OK)
drmOpenDevice: minor is 1
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card1
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
"""
(I've included some failures for context -- there's a dozen or so failed
combinations, and only the one device at /dev/dri/card0 found. One
odd thing -- what is the difference between the first 3 attempts? They
all look like they are using the same parameters to reach /dev/dri/card0,
but only the last one fails. Is that normal? Why "Unknown error"
instead of "No such device"?)

> Did you check it against lspci?
I have done so now. ;-)
Here's the relevant lines:
"""
:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon
9200] (rev 01)
:01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200]
(Secondary) (rev 01)
"""

I'm a little uncertain about how to read the bus ids here, but they look
plausible. Maybe
it should read PCI:1:0:1 or PCI:0:1:0? Even if I want to change this, though,
where do I
put the information? Is there a line in XF86Config-4 for this? I suppose I
can try to
set these with "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" -- I'm pretty sure there is
an option to
specify the bus. But what should I tell it, if this isn't right?

> Or maybe just the syntax of that line wrong?

Um, which line? Again, I don't know where this would be specified. A syntax
error
sounds promising, but I don't know where to look for it. ISTM, whatever syntax
is
being used is being created by the driver software?

I'm willing to go to a new driver or whatever if that's required, but this
looks like a
very minor problem --- it seems like there *ought* to be something I can specify
somewhere to make this behave.

I'm also looking at the Gatos project and the Debugging DRI page:
http://gatos.sourceforge.net/dri-debug.php

but it appears to me that this would involve compiling and installing new
drivers,
which means getting kernel-headers and so on. I'd like to avoid that if
there's a
simple configuration solution (which I'd likely have to solve anyway, even for
new
drivers).

1. Go to your /usr/share/doc/udev to find some informations.

Sound problem: My green output jack doesn't relay any data.

2005-06-26 Thread Xeno Campanoli
I've got three jacks together on my T3985 (Celeron system with all the
stuff in the motherboard):

My new debian system doesn't relay any sound to my speakers. I've
tried two sets of speakers, and both sets work on my other system's cd
drive jack. The sound plug area in the back of my new system has three
holes, and the "line out" output is the same green plastic as the male
part on the wire to the speakers. The other two holes say MIC (orange)
and "line out" (light blue). Another system I recently tried to install
linux on also could not put sound out and it also had the same three
jack holes (apparently that's popular now?). I wonder if the driver
expects only one or two holes and is confused by seeing three?

I've looked at some postings about problems like this, and none seems to
match mine exactly. One said the guy could play on root, but I tried
that with cdplay start on this, and it still didn't make noise. I'm not
sure what else to look for.

I think the special files are /dev/dsp*, and I changed these to
protection 666. I run CD Player
to test the sound and it runs and identifies a Duke Ellington CD, but
the sound just don't come out even though it shows the CD playing.

I'm not sure if the drivers for audio are all there. The only thing I
see is something called "soundcore", but perhaps that's all that's needed:

Well, I suppose, but this is all automatic.  To my knowledge, I haven'tspecified it anywhere.  One thing bothers me a little --- this is an AGP card,
why is the bus id a PCI specification?  Is that part normal?
I think there might be an autoconfiguration script that creates the
config file with the bus ID in it.  My usual way to create a
sample config is to run
# X -configure
Which is asking X itself to probe instead of doing something like use
discover, or whatever other methods may be around.  I think agp is
more like PCI with a bunch of extensions to it than a completely
different infrastructure, so showing up as a PCI bus slot isn't that
weird.  I think that you can tell it in the config to treat it
like an AGP instead of as a PCI.  > Did you check it against lspci?I have done so now. ;-)
Here's the relevant lines:""":01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200] (rev 01):01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200] (Secondary) (rev 01)

I have a multihead setup, and you can't avoid the bus ID's, and I have
yet to see a multihead config program.  You might not be able to
avoid reading the docs.  They are big, and complicated.
Sometimes the setup debian gives you isn't enough.

Yeah look for the stuff about bus ID, and make sure it is loading the right driver.

The Gatos  project  covers  different
stuff.   That is more about accessing other features of ATI
cards.  You don't need it to display to a monitor, and technically
if you don't care about acceleration you can use a generic VESA
driver.

Dear Xeno,
I'm running Debian Etch and have a similar 3 plug arrangement in back.
One for the mike and sound left, sound right. It might help if you gave
us a bit of info on your system. Which Debian are you running? Have you
installed alsa (lots of postings about how to do that). The more info
you give the easier it is to help.

That's great news Ankur. congrats! Any reason why you're using such an
old kernel? (2.4). Kernel 2.6.8 is quite stable and has alsa built in.
Maybe it will save you some hassles in the future.
Cheers,
