Starting/installing Mysql on debian

Title: Starting/installing Mysql on debian

Hello,

I always installed mysql from source, never had a problem.

Now i installed mysql via apt-get (mysql-common-4.1.0).

I get the message that it is installed but now i wonder where it is installed ??

I don't find anything to start it and when i search mysqld i get no result

So, easy question maybe:

How to install/start mysql ??

Grtz,

Verus

Missing 'libqutil.so.1' on Debian Sarge?

2005-05-12 Thread Jason Chagas

I failed to build QPE (http://qpe.sourceforge.net/) due to a missing
libqutil.so.1. What package (Sarge) should I install to get
libqutil.so.1 ?

A Google search tells me 'libqutil.so.1' is part of the 'libqutil1'
package in the stable release. Some other webpages indicate it is
included in QT2. Sarge offers QT3 packages but I can't locate QT2 or
'libqutil1'.

Any ideas? Thanks,

Jason

mrtg and snmp help needed

2005-05-12 Thread Chavdar Videff
Hi, list.

I am planning to set up a statistics generator for a number of hosts. My idea
was to try mrtg.
I read a few articles on the net and installed on my test machine the packets
mrtg and snmpd.
The test machine is a knoopix 3.6 installed on the hard drive and upgraded to
debian-sid.
The hosts I intend to monitor are debian-sid too.
I tried the following sample configuration of mrtg in order to test things on
the localhost:

/etc/mrtg.conf is liek this:

##
# Multi Router Traffic Grapher -- Sample Configuration File
##
# This file is for use with mrtg-2.5.4c

# Global configuration
WorkDir: /var/www/mrtg
WriteExpires: Yes

Title[^]: Traffic Analysis for

Title[leased]: a 128K leased line
PageTop[leased]: Our 128K link to the outside world
Target[leased]: 1:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:161
MaxBytes[leased]: 16000

and the /etc/snmp/snmp.conf is this:

com2sec readonly 10.50.0.0/25 public

However nothing happeds.
I included in the mrtg.conf a script that checks the test machine cpu and
memory and I am sure mrtg works properly, for I get graphs, etc for the
second configuration.

I am sure snmpd listens on all interfaces, for netstat -a says so.

But when I fire up
# mrtg
I get the output:

I have no clue here. Can someone give me a hint, because in the articles I
read in the official sites of mrtg, snmpd and elsewhere it is implied that
everything works but not wirh me.

Thanks for your help!

You should be asking this in an ubuntu group, or perhaps even a more
specialised audio group.

I'd guess that either your audio application's volume (as opposed to the
system-wide volume) is too low, or that you've got your speakers wired to the
wrong connection. Some outputs are for driving headphones directly, while
other line outputs will have a different amount of power, since they usually
go to amplifiers or powered speakers.

[newbie] Problem upload with file-server (samba, nfs, ftp and ssh)

2005-05-12 Thread Andrea Beciani
Hello all,
I have a file-server (with debian/unstable) with samba, nfs, ftp

with samba and ftp I get some errors and the transfer crash. With nfs I
got none errors, but the system crash. Ssh go very well but why the
transfer with nautilus is slower?

My nfs configuration is:
/home192.168.1.2(rw,no_root_squash,nohide,sync)
and mount with
user,bg,rw,hard,intr,noauto

Samba is in share mode and the upload dir have this options:
comment = Upload
path = /home/winshare
force user = andrea
force group = andrea
read only = No
create mask = 0777
directory mask = 0777
guest ok = Yes
hosts allow = 192.168.1.4
follow symlinks = No
delete readonly = Yes
on windows the error is:
Impossible copy file: the net name is not available (translated from
italian)

wu-ftpd is with defaults options
on linux with nautilus the transfer hung, with gftp sometime transfer, sometime
don't transfer and I get "transfer stalled"
on windows I can delete file but if upload a file I get "You don't have
permissions", with same user login I use on linux.
Thanks and pardon for bad english, I'm learning it.

gigabit ethernet stuck at 100Mbps

2005-05-12 Thread Leni Mayo
Hi -
I'm stumped if I can figure out how to get my supposedly gigabit NIC

If anyone can suggest techniques for debugging and/or fixing this sort
of problem I'd be grateful.
There are two Gigabit ethernet cards in the computer, which appear in
/proc/pci as:

The problem is with the Intel card, and here is the first sign of trouble:

The driver reports that the link has been negotiated at 100 Mbps. The
LED on the 3com OfficeConnect Gigabit switch shows solid green at 100

$ ethtool -s eth0 speed 1000
exits with status code 1. The LED for the switch port flashes during
the negotiation, which seems normal. But the speed remains at only
100 Mbps.
All I can imagine is that there's a driver issue or that there is
something specific whereby the Intel NIC and the 3com switch don't
like each other.
$ insmod e1000 Speed=1000
and
$ insmod e1000 AutoNeg=0x20
both cause ethtool to report:

I've also tried compiling the driver into the kernel, and had a look
at the the nictools-pci package, which doesn't seem to have anything
relevant to this particular intel card, and mii-diag doesn't appear to
know anything about gigabit.
The cheapest solution at this point is definitely go out and buy a
second D-link gigabit card. But having got this far, I'd thought I'd
ask whether anyone had suggestions for debugging and/or fixing it.
The kernel version is 2.6.8.

mii-tool doesn't seem to understand gigabit speeds, as suggested by
both the man page and it's output.

$ mii-tool -v eth0
eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok
product info: vendor 00:aa:00, model 56 rev 0
  basic mode: autonegotiation enabled

flow-control
  link partner: 100baseTx-FD 100baseTx-HD 10baseT-FD 10baseT-HD

At least ethtool knows that the card is capable of gigabit.

1) To set the order, just put those items in the menu in the
order you want -- Windows first, Debian second, etc.

2) If the operating system you want as the default is in
position N in the menu, where N starts at 0, then use

default N

to set that one as the default.

3) As far as I can tell, the only difference between
recovery mode and the default mode is that recovery mode
uses single-user mode -- meaning that it boots you into a
root login console and doesn't start a lot of your daemons.
It's there in case something's broken on your machine and
you need to fix it.

4) To add a Windows block, use the instructions I gave the
other day -- which basically involve copying a block out of
/usr/share/doc/grub/examples/menu.lst

Let me know if this helps. And please email the debian-user
list directly, not me. That way others with more and
different expertise can help you too.

Cheers,
Steve

Run "lspci" and see what chipset your sound blaster uses. For example,
my relevant line says:

> :00:07.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc.
> VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller(rev 50)

indicating that my sound chip is a VAI VT82C686.

Then run "modconf" to install the appropriate driver. In my case, that
driver is "via82cxxx_audio". If you can't find the driver via "modconf",
you can try googling for the correct driver for your sound chip.

As a general rule, once installed, the driver's settings are set to
"mute". You may need to run some sort of mixer utility (alsamix, kmix,
etc) to unmute the device.

Upgrading from Woody to Sarge on PowerPC

2005-05-12 Thread Kevin
Hi Folks-

I'm new to Debian but have 10 years of experience with Linux from
Slackware, Mandrake, Redhat, SuSE, and most lately Gentoo. I'm
experimenting with Debian in general because of its universality and in
particular because Gentoo doesn't seem to have an install capability for
the OldWorld PowerPC (604e). I recently installed Woody on such a
machine using the 3.0r4 binary CDs for PowerPC and the resulting system
seems to work fine, but I didn't realize how old the software was in
Woody and would like to upgrade to Sarge (I need relatively current
software for Kerberos and OpenAFS). Unfortunately, I'm having problems
doing so according to the release notes for Sarge. In particular, I see
at
http://www.debian.org/releases/testing/powerpc/release-notes/ch-upgrading.en.html
the instructions of "4.2.1 Adding APT Internet sources" which read in part:

=
To use this mirror with apt, you add this line to your sources.list file:

 deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian sarge main contrib

Note that the `dists' is added implicitly, and the arguments after the
release name are used to expand the path into multiple directories.

After adding your new sources, disable the previously existing "deb"
lines in sources.list, by placing a hash sign (#) in front of them.
=

My /etc/apt/sources.list file reads:
==
7300:~# cat /etc/apt/sources.list|grep -v ^\#
deb http://debian.lcs.mit.edu/debian/ sarge main non-free contrib
deb-src http://debian.lcs.mit.edu/debian/ sarge main non-free contrib
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US sarge/non-US main contrib
non-free
deb-src http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US sarge/non-US main contrib
non-free
==
(any line breaks were introduced by my mail client upon pasting)

My only changes from what I found after installation were to remove the
cdrom sources and to change "stable" to "sarge" where I found it in the
file.

I also tried upgrading with "sarge" above replaced by "stable" but when
I did so, the upgrade step made zero changes:

7300:~# aptitude -f --with-recommends dist-upgrade
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree
Reading extended state information... Done
No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed.
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B of archives. After unpacking 0B will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n/e/d/v/action/?]
Writing extended state information... Done
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree
Reading extended state information... Done

I'm not quite sure what to make of the fact that initially, these
instructions say to use "sarge" and then later, go on to say use
"stable." These seem contradictory to me but I'm sure it's because I'm
a newbie to Debian.

Continuing with the instructions at the above URL, I then see at "4.3
Upgrading packages" instructions which read in part:

=
Next ensure that the APT source entries (in /etc/apt/sources.list) refer
to the 'stable' distribution and do not refer to it by its codename
(e.g. woody).

...

First aptitude needs to fetch a list of new and updated packages for the
new release. This is done by executing:

 aptitude update

Once aptitude has information on all the available packages, the system
is almost ready to be fully upgraded.

 aptitude -f --with-recommends dist-upgrade

=

But when I execute "aptitude update" with "sarge" in my
/etc/apt/sources.list file, I see this:

=

What do you mean that "it is still broadcasting"? Do you have another
computer on the LAN that sees it? Do you see it listed via "ifconfig"? What?

I generally bring my network interface up or down with the networking rc
script, like so:

> enjae[westk]:/home/westk> /etc/init.d/networking stop

or

> enjae[westk]:/home/westk> /etc/init.d/networking start

Perhaps this is relevant to you.

inet6 is the next generation of TCP/IP addressing, to compensate for the
low numbers of IP addresses available with the current version 4 of the
TCP/IP addressing scheme. 6 is used in a few places, but 4 is still the
"standard". Sometimes computers will be configured to handle both, which
seems to be the situation in your case.

You should be able to prevent activation of your NICs by commenting out
any lines referring to them in "/etc/network/interfaces" (but do this
after running "/etc/init.d/networking stop"). However, as I say, I know
nothing about pppoe, so my information my be wrong/incomplete.

You'll need to run "aptitude update" prior to running "aptitude -f

The first step goes out and gets the list of available packages; the
next step goes and gets, not the list, but the actual packages.

Ah; this means that something is wrong in the sources.list file.
(I hate the syntax in that file. I've been using Debian for about 5
years now, and I _still_ don't understand the syntax of that file. It's
very picky about when and where you use spaces or / marks, etc.)

Unless you want the source files, you can comment out the "deb-src"
lines to make your file less complex.

It may be that your mirror does not have the Sarge files; you might want
to point do a different mirror.

What I would do is return the "sources.list" file to its original form,
and run "aptitide update". If the system updates properly, go back into
sources.list and comment all but one line. Then change that one line so
that instead of "stable" it reads "sarge", and try running the update
again. If it fails, you can suspect the mirror of not having sarge
files, or at least of not having the expected file structure. You might
try "testing" instead of "sarge", or even "sid" or "unstable" for
cutting-edge software.

Another idea that just came to me: You indicate that your original
sources.list file was pulling from CDs; now you're telling it to pull
from the Internet. You are attached to the Internet, yes?

And you'll have to change the line so that it pulls from the Internet
instead of from CDs.

PS. I usually just run "aptitude dist-upgrade" instead of the more
complex "aptitude -f --with-recommends dist-upgrade". YMMV.

Re: Internet (Once and for all)

2005-05-12 Thread Robert Storey
Sorry, I missed the beginning of this thread. But I know how to set up
pppoe. Assuming that your Ethernet card is already being detected (as
indicated by ifconfig), do this:

1) As root, run "pppoeconf"
2) When asked for your username, you probably need to put the whole
thing, like "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" (rather than just "myname")
3) And, of course, supply the password when asked for it.
4) You'll be asked if you want to start up pppoe on boot-up - I prefer
not to. You can start pppoe anytime with the command:

   pon dsl-provider

and stop it with the command:

   poff dsl-provider

A few notes: "dsl-provider" is literally just that. Don't substitute the
name of your ISP, type it exactly as I did above. Also, you probably
don't want to be root to use the pon and poff commands - in that case,
add yourself to "dip" group and relogin (dip - dial-up ip I think). Make
sure /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider is readable by group dip by doing:

  chmod 640 /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider

Check the results:

  ls -l /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider
  -rw-r- 1 root dip 250 Feb 26 10:57 /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider

cheers,
Robert

Installing Debian Linux 3.0r4

2005-05-12 Thread Councillor Smola
I have purchased a Debian install DVD disk from Softcopy Systems in Toronto.

After the initial install process the program asks to reboot and I did so.
The next phase was a screen indicating that the installation was correct.
ie: Congradulations you have successfully installed Debion.

At this point I was required to choose the correct time and zone but before
I could do so the following message appeared :

ide2: unexpected interrupt, status=0xd0, count= x(number)

I also saw the message throughout the boot sequence starting at number 1,
then number 340 when the time and zone message appeared, then I went for a
Shower and came back to the computer realizing there was a continuous count
up as high as 3,378.

Any idea on what the problem could be?

My Computer is a P4 running at 3.0 ghz
two Hard Drives WD 40gb & 120 gb
1mb of ram
ati All in Wonder Card 9000 series
on board sound & network

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

You have to specify the path to the device corresponding to the volume
group that contains the root filesystem. In my
case, /dev/mapper/vg0-root.

I'm sure there's an official way to do this. If nothing else, you can edit
the global make defaults (probably in /usr/share somewhere?), and redefine CC
etc. that way. Otherwise, you can set the CC variable and similar variables
in the system-wide profile.

I just use a shell script that sets up the variables, then gives me an new
interactive shell to do compilations etc.

Note that not everything compiles on GCC 4 yet, so even when you get this
working, it might not be as useful as you expect :(

Also, bear in mind that some of GCC 4's speedier options require special flags
to be set, since they're not enabled by default. Problem is, if you enable
them by default, stuff will probably break :)

Both from http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/) and installing

RE: gigabit ethernet stuck at 100Mbps

2005-05-12 Thread Piszcz, Justin
Are you using Cat6 or Cat6e cable?

I have 4-5 e1000 nics on netgear gigabit switches doing 55MB/s sustained
with 116-126MB/s bursts.

Justin.

mii-tool doesn't seem to understand gigabit speeds, as suggested by
both the man page and it's output.

$ mii-tool -v eth0
eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok
product info: vendor 00:aa:00, model 56 rev 0
   basic mode: autonegotiation enabled
basic status: autonegotiation complete, link ok

flow-control
   link partner: 100baseTx-FD 100baseTx-HD 10baseT-FD 10baseT-HD
flow-control

At least ethtool knows that the card is capable of gigabit.

ah yes, I recall this. I had it when the kernel I was installing was
modern enough for the hard drive. IIRC I had been trying the default
woody from downloading all the CDs (a mistake!). I wiped it all and
started again but this time using sarge and then using a SMP kernel from

Look at:

at the config stage (menuconfig, xconfig) select 'M' to include as

Get transcode, it comes with a program "avimerge" to du just that. The sad
thing is that it seemed to be quite buggy the last time I used it, but that
was quite some time ago.

If you can get away with using OggMedia containers, I suggest you do that. The
tools for those (package: ogmtools) were much better back then. Playback
might be a slight problem though, I had to rebuild the xine package from
source for that. Demultiplexer for Windows are also available and appear to
be stable, so even WMP can play the files.

MEncoder used to have an example for this in the documentation, but it
seems to be gone now, anyway, I found an old copy:

As a side-effect, the broken AVI fixer function enables MEncoder to
append 2 (or more) AVI files:

Command: cat 1.avi 2.avi | mencoder -noidx -ovc copy -oac copy -o
  output.avi -

Note: This expects 1.avi and 2.avi to use the same codecs, resolution,
stream rate etc, and at least 1.avi must not be broken. You may need
to fix your input AVI files first, as described above.

laptop and different networks

2005-05-12 Thread H. S.
Hi,

I am supposed to configure a laptop so that is can be connected to a
CAT5 cable on either a home LAN or a university LAN. Currently, the
laptop is configured as a dhcp client in the home network and has a
fixed IP address in the university network.

I played with ifplugd and guessnet a few months ago but couldn't get it
to work. Someone here was even nice enough to give me his interfaces
file to see how to do the configuration. For some unknown reason, it
just did not work.

I am trying to solve the problem by starting from the beginning. What
options do I have to solve this problem (ifplugd, guessnet, etc)? Of
those options, assuming I am only dealing with a wired network, which
one is easy to configure? A webpage giving detailed documentation on how
to configure this would be actually nice. I have gone through the
ifplugd man page and also went through guessnet man page but iirc both
appeared to be lacking information on how to actually configure them and
if something doesn't work where to look for solutions. It is quite
possible that things have improved since 6 months or so ago. So I am
willing to give this another shot.

regards,

Since I need to constantly change my laptop to different networks, I use a
script called Quickswitch to move my laptop to different LAN and WLAN
connections. Quickswitch store each configuration in a profile that can be
applied from the command line with "sudo switchto ". I have found
Quickswitch to be more flexible and easier to use than any of the automatic
or GUI tools currently available.

Unfortunately, there is no Debian package for this but it is very easy to
install. you can find it at http://muthanna.com/quickswitch.

Can anyone think of why this would happen?

How would I get this loaded into the kernel such that /sbin/iptables
-L doesn't complain about missing modules?

One idea of a possibility.

if you forgot to change your bootloader (LILO) config
for using the new kernel image then it still loads the
old kernel.
Even if you reinstall LILO after the compile.

compile and install your modules.

read
old article from debian user list about
/etc/modules.conf
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2003/02/msg04262.html

never use any modules myself.

Fix your kernel first, then it may get better. But if you're using
kernel-package, it should probably be working fine now. If you're not, I
suggest forgetting what you just did, and trying again with kernel-package.

Agreed. Fax was a poor and ill-considered approach to what email now does

On this, I would say that digital signatures are far superior, and should

I'm assuming the error message that appears on your screen is *not*:

no sir; eth0 still broadcasting

so what is the exact message you are seeing?

This should be harmless, but on the off chance that it's causing
problems, you can use:

ifconfig eth0 del xxx/nn

with "xxx/nn" replaced with whatever's listed as the inet6 address for
that interface.

Often, a Makefile will use the $(CC) variable as its C compiler and
$(CXX) as its C++ compiler, and I believe gmake uses these in its
implicit rules. The compiler itself should determine which version of
cpp to use. If you only want to run the preprocessor, use "$(CC) -E"
and redirect the output to a file.

To try a specific compiler once (with a clean source code directory),
the following should work:
make CC=gcc-3.4 CXX=g++-3.4

If you're using autoconf, then in Makefile.in you could have the lines:
CC := @CC@
CXX := @CXX@
and when running configure:
./configure CC=gcc-3.4 CXX=g++-3.4
When Makefile is generated from Makefile.in, you'll then end up with:
CC := gcc-3.4
CXX := g++-3.4
All subsequent makes will use these compilers.

Using make menuconfig I cannot find any option in Device Drivers/Block
for usb devices. I tried saying no to the USB Mass Storage Support
option in Device Drivers/USB but this did not solve the problem.

Still, you may be right. Last week I had an unrelated problem which was
solved by compiling the kernel with CONFIG_BLK_DEV_VIA82CXX. This
option was also not in my .config or present as an option in make
menuconfig. The problem was only solved when I found a backup version
of .config that contained the option and used make config with the
backup file to set the option. After this was done make menuconfig
contained the option and all was well.

Needless to say I have checked my available backup versions of .config
and could not find CONFIG_BLK_DEV_UB in any of them.

I am using the latest debian version of kernel-source-2.6.8, I
reinstalled it and recompiled my kernel today just to be sure. If the
option CONFIG_BLK_DEV-UB existed in the past it is no longer in the
current version.

It looks like the driver for the Ensoniq es1371 sound chip
is supported in Linux through the es1371 module. Type

cd /lib/modules/`uname -r`

Then type

find . -iname '*es1371*'

You should get a couple drivers back -- one containing the
word 'oss', and another containing 'pci'. You'll need to do

modprobe es1371

to load the module. There are lots of other steps on the way
to getting your card to play sounds (this really ought to be
automatic, and in my experience normally is -- why didn't it
load automatically for you?), but that's a start.

A hint: you'll get much better responses to questions like
this if

1) you include a descriptive subject line, and
2) you tell us what you've tried to do, what worked and what

Is there any reason why you wouldn't just uninstall all the
graphical stuff like gdm and kdm? If you're never going to
use those things, you can just do an

sudo apt-get remove kdm gdm xserver-xfree86

and that will take care of a lot of that for you. (You end
up having to delete lots of other stuff, like OpenOffice or
whatnot, but the line above will get you started.)

Now, to make sure that gdm or kdm don't run when you boot is
actually much easier. First install the rcconf package
(apt-get install rcconf), then 'sudo rcconf'. You'll see a
list of daemons that run when you boot. Among them is
probably gdm. Go down to that item on the list and make sure
that it's deselected; use the spacebar to deselect.

It might be worthwhile to read about the /etc/rc*.d system
if you don't already know about it. Lots of daemons sit in
/etc/init.d/, and they get symlinked into /etc/rc*.d
depending upon where in the boot order they're supposed to
load. rcconf handles this symlinking for you.

Cheers,
Steve

In the future, I would advise you to use a subject in your mails and
to be a little more verbose with your question. I'm going to assume
that you know next to nothing about your kernel configuration. Follow
these steps:

do uname -r. If it is 2.2.20, install a newer kernel like so:
apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-1-686
You can see all kernel images by searching for them: (handy if you
have a different type of processor, or are not running woody)
apt-cache search 'kernel-image'

After that, make sure lilo is configured well (probably is), let the
install run it, and reboot.

Now, if you have a decent number kernel, as root run:
modconf
and look for the section with audio drivers. In that section, try out
a few and you will probably find a good one for your soundcard.

Once you have installed the driver in the kernel, install a mixer
program like aumix, and make sure your sound is not muted.

greets,
Wim

P.S.: If you are running woody, I'd suggest upgrading to sarge
(currently still 'testing'). It's quite stable, much more featurefull
and will be the next stable soon.

Problems with Sarge on OldWorld 604e PowerMac: booting, quik, 2.6 kernel, etc.

2005-05-12 Thread Kevin
Hi List-

I'm having some difficulty with this combination.

I'd like to use quik to boot this OldWorld 7300 PowerMac (604e) directly
from the HDD (without any MacOS tools) into a 2.6 kernel. It seems that
Debian is the only distribution that makes this practical to do without
doing all sorts of stuff from scratch.

I can install Woody by first booting from a bootable floppy image
available on the mirrors and then using a root.bin floppy image at the
same location:

/debian/dists/woody/main/disks-powerpc/3.0.23-2002-05-21/powermac/images-1.44
[ ] boot-floppy-hfs.img 16-May-2002 11:22 1.4M
[ ] root.bin16-May-2002 11:21 1.4M

Woody installs and runs fine, but I've got very old software. I'd like
to use relatively current versions of kerberos and openafs available in
Sarge, so I upgraded following the instructions in the Release Notes for
Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 (`sarge'), PowerPC Chapter 4 - Upgrades from
previous releases at
http://www.debian.org/releases/testing/powerpc/release-notes/ch-upgrading.en.html

Though there were some hiccups, I got them worked out and managed the
upgrade to Sarge without further problems.

The problems arise when I want to install a 2.6 kernel.

I've tried many things now, but ultimately, I end up making the box
unbootable from the HDD. I can boot from that bootable floppy above,
mount the root fs, then chroot into it and make modifications to the
Sarge installation, but cannot figure out how to get quik to boot the
2.6 kernel, or for that matter, how to make a bootable floppy that will
use /dev/sda2 as the root fs instead of /dev/fd0.

I found the knl package, but the knl binary insists that every kernel
image I have is not a kernel image (including the 2.2 kernel that ships
with Woody, the 2.6.8 kernel image I installed from aptitude, as well as
the kernel on the bootable floppy: zImage---even after I gunzip it), so
adjusting the root fs and swap dev for the kernel image is something
that I cannot seem to do.

When I install the 2.6.8 kernel from aptitude (yes, the correct one for
my arch) and edit quik.conf to use it instead of the 2.2 kernel shipped
with Woody (which boots fine), I can no longer boot from the HDD. The
closest I can get is a weirdly colored penguin logo (sometimes red,
sometimes blue, sometimes green, etc.)

Furthermore, even though I can boot from the floppy and chroot into the
HDD root fs and thus edit quik.conf again (restoring it to its original
state), I still cannot boot from the HDD (yes, I did run quik after
revising the quik.conf file in each case; I even used the installer
program on the root.bin image to run quik after making the revisions in
a console and thereby noticed that it was running quik -v -f -r /target,
but still to no avail; back in the console, I tried quik -v -r -f /
while chrooted into /target and still no joy; part of the problem with
doing it through the install program was that after upgrading to Sarge,
the upgraded quik package relies on a glibc version that the root.bin
image doesn't have, so I chrooted into /target, removed quik, adjusted
my sources.list file to return to stable, then updated and installed
quik again, thus restoring quik to the same one originally installed I
think), but still no success.

Am I doing something wrong with quik here? I've read that it can be
incredibly difficult to install right (though doing it with the Woody
install program was easy enough) and that the OpenFirmware in these
machines is very buggy. Is it possible for me to netboot one of these
machines with bootp and/or tftp and stuff? Maybe that's a better
solution than struggling with quik.

I've tried installing Sarge right off the bat, but I don't find any
bootable floppy images for booting and installing Sarge on an OldWorld
PPC. The CD images are there, but I've read that these machines cannot
boot linux from the CD. The floppy images I find in
/debian/dists/sarge/main/installer-powerpc/20050305/images/powerpc/floppy
are not bootable. I tried both the boot.img and the ofonlyboot.img and
the 7300 ejects the disks as unbootable in each case.

It appears that the only way I can get Sarge on this machine is to
install Woody and then upgrade to Sarge which I've done 3 or 4 times
now. If that's not the case, could someone please explain the
alternatives to me? But I need a 2.6 kernel for openafs-1.3.81 in
Sarge, and every time I try to boot from one, I toast my system and end
up having to start all over. I've tried many things to avoid starting
over, but none work. Once I've tried booting with quik into a 2.6
kernel, I can no longer boot from the HDD no matter what I try (and I've
tried many things). The only way I've found it possible to recover is
to install Woody again (sigh...).

Any advice would be most welcome.

Also, is this a post more well-suited to a developer list?

TIA.

-Kevin

PS. Oh, and why is it that the Woody install program won't let me make a
rescue floppy? It claims that the capabili

My local debian archive maintenance scripts

2005-05-12 Thread Marty
As the debian archive grows larger, it gets increasingly laborious and time
consuming to keep my local debian archive up-to-date. Here are my latest
scripts for automating the process (including some remaining manual steps).
I'm sure there are better ways to do it, which is one of my reasons for
posting them here. In particular, I am interested in exploring the use the
debmirror to replace rsync in these scripts, although I'm not familiar enough
with it yet to know how well that might work.
(Note: these scripts work for x86 debian archives, and will need to be modified
accordingly for other architectures. In addition, there are probably more
elegant
ways to do these tasks, by consolidating them instead of using several small
scripts.
Any proposals are welcome.)

clock troubles

2005-05-12 Thread Glenn English
The system clock on one of my machines is running way slow. If I
repeatedly run 'date' the second changes once every 3 or 4 seconds.
ntpdate will bring it into line, but ntpd can't keep it there.

I don't understand how this can happen. My experience with digital
electronics says that things almost never work half-way; they're fine,
or they're dead. Anybody know what the system clock actually is? A
counter counting the line frequency?? A divider off the CPU clock?

There was a power failure this morning, long enough to drain the UPSes
and stop all the computers. Then when I started bringing things back up,
I could just barely catch the aroma of overheated electronics -- so it
could be hardware. It could also be my imagination.

Can't help with the diagnosis but you're not the first on the list to
suffer time 'drift'. Solution: install something like 'ntpdate' to keep
the clock sychnronised with one of the internet time servers. FWIW
other people have recommended 'chrony' as an alternative - I've not tried
it.

Most digital clocks use a quartz crystal, which, as I understand it,
physically oscillates at a very specific frequency when a charge is applied.
I'd guess the hardware clock uses something like that.

Not sure on the system clock, but yes, I'd guess it's just based on cycles,
which then trigger an interrupt.

Anyway... if ntpdate etc. don't fix things to your satisfaction, look into
adjtimex, which can work out your clock drift and correct for it. I was
under the impression that ntp was pretty good at this stuff, though.

I have an old, slow system (100MHz) that also doesn't keep time with the
ntp server
with kernel 2.6.8, but does with 2.4.27. I think the relevant difference
between
these two kernels is the change from 100Hz to 1000Hz timer tick rate. (See my
post
about the problem several weeks ago.) My working theory is that the slow CPU
cannot
keep up with the 1000Hz tick rate and is losing ticks, since the time problem
seems
to vary directly with increasing CPU load. I have not yet reported this as a
bug.

Re: Kernel Panic on my new custom kernel

2005-05-12 Thread Rene Tapia
I had the same problem building 2.6.11, and solved it with the --initrd option
like Peter
mentioned:

make-kpkg clean; make-kpkg --initrd kernel-image

Note that if you use this option with pristine sources (not Debian's) then you
need to change
/etc/mkinitrd/mkinitrd.conf (see man mkinitrd.conf):

MKIMAGE='genromfs -d %s -f %s'

X server not working

2005-05-12 Thread soofi

Dear Debian users,

I have recently installed Debian on a HPPA Apollo 715/50 workstation.
The X server is not working, however, the text mode seems to be OK.
Below, I have included the contents of files
XFree86.0.log and XFree86.8.log. Is it related to some limitation
of the Debian system for HPPA hardware or I have not installed the
Debian system properly or it is a bug?. If it is a bug, how can I
find the package responsible for error.

A response will be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Best regards,

Muhammad Asif Soofi

are you using the same ntp server for ntpdate and ntpd ??

as root:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

also look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log for errors
look for lines beginning with (WW) for warnings and more importantly
(EE) for errors

Using Sarge. I'm currently using the uchicago.edu mirror for updates &
upgrades, however it's almost never available on Saturdays. I have used
the utility that finds the fastest mirror (netselect, I think). Since
this system uses a DSL, I don't believe speed is paramount. Can anyone
recommend a U.S. mirror with plenty of capacity for 24/7 access?

Also, have I read correctly that debian.org is the only security source?

Debian.lcs.mit.edu has always been very good to me. I'm not
sure if it matters at all that I'm in Boston. I suspect not;
I bet your throughput will be quite good anywhere.

4) You'll be asked if you want to start up pppoe on boot-up - I prefernot to. You can start pppoe anytime with the command:   pon dsl-providerand stop it with the command:   poff dsl-provider
A few notes: "dsl-provider" is literally just that. Don't substitute thename of your ISP, type it exactly as I did above. Also, you probablydon't want to be root to use the pon and poff commands - in that case,
add yourself to "dip" group and relogin (dip - dial-up ip I think). Makesure /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider is readable by group dip by doing:  chmod 640 /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-providerCheck the results:

quite a lot of script :-) Using 'debmirror' will put a full Debian
mirror into your home directory, not what you seem to want but an
example. I am not sure if 'debmirror' works with non-official sites but
it does a good job mirroring the Debian archive, and you can limit the
arch's and versions easily, not end up with 100+ gb :-)

If you're not getting a ppp0 interface, that simply means you aren't
connecting to your ISP. The cause could be anything from
misconfiguration to wrong username or password, or even that the
Ethernet cable is disconnected. So let's diagnose this.

I'll assume that your Ethernet cable is connected and DSL modem is
turned on (otherwise, pppoeconf would error out and exit). The problem
could possibly be your /etc/network/interfaces file - feel free to copy
mine:

# /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(8), ifdown(8)

   # The loopback interface
   # automatically added when upgrading
   auto lo eth0
   iface lo inet loopback

   iface eth0 inet static
  address 192.168.0.2
  netmask 255.255.255.0
  network 192.168.0.0
broadcast 192.168.0.255

If you make any changes to /etc/network/interfaces, reboot (actually you
just need to restart the network, but rebooting is probably easier). Try
running "pon dsl-provider" - if it doesn't work, try running it as root
(to eliminate any possibility of a permissions error). If it's working
properly, this is the output you should see:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> pon dsl-provider
Plugin rp-pppoe.so loaded.
RP-PPPoE plugin version 3.3 compiled against pppd 2.4.2

If it still doesn't work, please post the output of "ifconfig" and I'll
get back to you.

By the way, when you ran "pppoeconf", did it give you any error
messages, or did it accept your username/password and exit without
complaint?

best regards,
Robert

Migrating from Redhat 9 grub questions

2005-05-12 Thread Problem Email
Greetings All,

I have a dual boot redhat 9 \ XP. I really like how it works, but I
can't say I am a fan of RH. I recently became the proud owner of a
Packard Bell machine with a Cyrix MII 300 ---circa 1998, installed
Sarge and was astonished by how much more comfortable it made me feel.
(The ease with which I removed gnome and her allies was what won me over.)

To make a long story short, I want to migrate the dual boot on my
modern machine from redhat 9 to debian, and I hope the community would
offer some advice.

The original dual boot was set up essentially painlessly, but
sufficiently long ago that I do not remember all the details. I have
two ~110GB hard drives, the primary has XP, (and some NTFS space) and
the second where redhat 9 lives, has a 102GB FAT32 partition (which I
like to think of as a door), and 3 other partitions. Here, I deliver
the results of df:

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available
Use% Mounted on
/dev/hdb8 7969432 3570296 3994300
48% /
/dev/hdb6 10108926625 69245
 28% /boot
none 5154600 515460
   0% /dev/shm
/dev/hdb5 106760232 76833904 29926328 72%
   /mnt/door

In retrospect, my /boot is huge, and my swap is a little small, (I
have 1GB memory and plan to crunch a considerable sum of numbers.)

So here's where the questions start:

My primary concern is grub---it works now, but I fear that if I run
the sarge 'installer' that will change, and the result will be my
precious computer becoming art. (In the form without function sense.)

Do I need to know where grub lives, or will the new /boot partition
take care of that?

Here's what I would do if left unchecked:

Boot with the Sarge disk in the drive, and click next for a while,
until I come to a question about the network name:

When the designation that is given by the network arrives, is it
necessary to accept that name?
I am given something like
Name-of-City-h380-189ccs-38gak0-blah-blah-blah, can I change that
without the network service failing? or is that name important?

When I get to the partition disks stage I would choose to manually partition.

I am not opposed to totally formatting the whole drive.
Would this be better for any reason?

First I would delete all the existing partitions or suggestions and
make a 95GB FAT32 at the beginning that I would designate as "do not
use".

Then I would make a new 10MB logical, ext3 /boot partition,
a ~5GB swap partition,
and the remaining ~9GB I will designate ext3 and to be the /.

Is 9GB enough for / ?
I know I plan to use Octave, and maybe, if I'm lucky I will get a copy
of SAS for linux one day. (under windows SAS weighs in at 1800MB).

Since I used the installation disk on a dedicated machine I just
clicked on next several times and grub was installed on the primary
partition.

I assume in this scenario grub will be placed on the /boot partition,
but I really don't know.

Will it know about XP? Or will I have to explain this to it?

I have never really understood grub, the MBR, or the connection
between the two. I had upgraded kernels 3 times with RH9, and each is
still bootable from grub, which I find totally useless. I would be so
happy to see it gone, but replaced. I fear this may not go smoothly.

Am I missing anything?

I also wonder if there are a few concise commands that will give
return the vital hardware specifications that I may need to properly
configure my installation? Something analogous to df, but for
everything else.

Sometimes the biggest hassle with linux is not knowing the command
that will solve all of your problems.

Any additional thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You in Advance,

S.K.

group web software

2005-05-12 Thread Nate Kroll
This is by no means a debian based question, but the software would be
on a debian box and everyone on this list seems very knowledgable, so
this seems like a great place to start.

I'm looking for some web application that will allow the creation and
management of community groups. Something like Google Groups or Yahoo
Groups. I'd like a webapp that will allow me to register and create a
group that others can join and the group members would be able to use a
common message board and perhaps a gallery. It would be awesome if
there was little administration (since that would be my job).

If anyone knows of any software that might do this for me, that would be
very cool. We want a way for students to create these groups without us
having to manage a separate instance of phpBB or some other forum for
each individual group. Not to mention group management and keeping
track of group changes.

Any help is greatly appreciated. As always, Thanks for looking!
