DRI in XFree 4 with i810

2000-11-23 Thread Viral
I've got XFree 4 starting up with DRI (I'm running 2.4-test11, with the
agpgart and dri modules).

I can run the gears demo, but quake 3a fails to run.
I get some Gart errors in my log.
I'm attaching my log file. Does anyone know whats the problem.

Thanks,

viral

sawmill and debian menus

2000-11-23 Thread mcclosk

This may not be a debian-specific question but I think it probably is,
since it involves (at least in part) the debian-specific menu system.

I run two boxes, both with potato installed, both up to date with the
latest revisions (as of Wed evening, Nov 22nd anyway) from
proposed-updates and security.debian.org. I've been trying out sawmill
as a window-manager and liking it well. On one of the machines,
everything works smoothly. On the other, the mouse works perfectly
well for window operations, but I have no menus. Clicking the mouse on
the background image produces no output and the following
error-message (visible after the X server is killed with Ctl-Alt-Delete):

   File error

more than one .sty file in a tex document!?

2000-11-23 Thread Manuel Hendel
Hi,

is it possible to use more than one .sty file in a tex document? For
example, let's say I use g-brief as documentclass, but also want to
use letter or dinbrief and a package called rechnung.

Thanks for any help,

Re: Telent

2000-11-23 Thread Sebastiaan
Hi,
if you really need to log in as root via telnet, you must add a line in
/etc/securetty and add:
pts/0 for only one connection
pts/1 for a second connection
etc.

However, this is unsecure. For maintenance, use ssh instead (and do not
add the lines given above). If you need to acces the computer from a
windoze platform, use Putty, a client way better than the windoze one and
also ssh.
For install you can use:
# apt-get install ssh

this should install the daemon and client.

My own rule of thumb is typicall swap = 2-3 x physical RAM. I'm
currently running light by that standard, but I've just boosted my box
from 96 MB to 256 MB, which is pretty generous for my needs, giving a
swap:RAM ratio of 1.57. VA Linux routinely ships its boxes with a 1:1
swap:RAM ratio, but they also tend to run 1-4 GB RAM in their servers.
For lower end boxes with less memory, I'd scale the multiplier higher.

Re: Using putty for an X session

2000-11-23 Thread kmself
It doesn't have to support X, just port forwarding. The user will have
to supply appropriate xhost and xauth authorization values.

Better solution IMO would be VNC.

Where is this other box, and if remote, why can't you just run terminal
access to it?

I go those files and comiled them seperately from the kernel. I got
kern_compat.h, pci-scan.c, tulip.c, pci-scan.h (actually that is four, I
assumed those were the right files).

I can't insmod tulip before I insmod pci-scan (unresolved symbols). After I
insmod pci-scan, I still get a "device or resource busy" and something about
changing my IRQ or IO parameters to the module (I don't know how to do this).

in /proc/pci it says little about my card.. that it is io 0xd400 and irq 11,
but it doesn't recognize the type. Is there a way I can send that io address
and irq to the module?
I tried:
~# insmod tulip irq=11
then I get "error invalid parameter parm_irq"

I am not getting my card to work at all and I have spent about 15 hours so far.
I tried a diagnostic tool called "tulip-diag" and I get:

~# ./tulip-diag
I get messages like:
Rx state stopped
Tx state stopped
and it says something about a 10mbps (it is an FA311 10/100)

I am using either a FA311 or FA310 in the computer I am writing this on, and it
works fine (Mandrake & Redhat). It shows much more details info in /proc/pci
like "LiteOn LNE100TX (rev 32)".

If /proc/pci isn't showing good information, how would I get it to work like my
other machines?

Thanks!

Hi,
yes and no. Some packages like footmisc, soul, which are not a document
class can be used alonside each other. g-brief und dinbrief, however,
are different documten classes. Same as you can't write a document based
on book.cls and a letter (based on g-brief, letter, dinbrief or
whatever) at the same time, you can't do that with different classes for
a letter. This also applies for the different variants for reports,
books or articles. If you tried, the last one will probably overwrite
the previous if it does not give you an error.

the footer from the letter class or is there any package which I can
add to my .tex file together with g-brief to get the footers?

Well you can always try and see if it works. In your case try to input
the letter class after the g-brief class. I don't think this will give
the desired result though.
The prelim2e package puts something at the lower edge of the each page
that you can customize to what you want there. Maybe that does what you
want.

You "only" need a Xserver that supports the card the clients can stay
on an older version. I suggest compiling XFree 4.?.? on the machine
with "prefix" set to '/usr/local' (look into the documentation
contained in the XFree-Source how to do this) and install ist. You
then have to use the Xserver from /usr/local. This does not touch the
debina-installed-X. You might be able to install the Xservers from the
new X only. This would minimize side-effects. Of course, customization
containig the Xserver have to be done in '/usr/local/X11R6/...' by hand.

2.4 kernel on potato, what userland needs updating

2000-11-23 Thread Ethan Benson
hi,

I am needing to put a 2.4-test kernel on a potato box, is anyone else
doing this as well? is there any gotchas?

looking at the Documentation/Changes file it seems to suggest using
glibc 2.2 is this required? and if so is there any gotchas installing
glibc from woody on potato?

TIA

isdn4k-utils - "make config" problems

2000-11-23 Thread robert_wilhelm_land
I'm experiencing a quite ridiculous problem in running make config for
preparing to install the isdn4k-utils:

When you run "make config" you get a ascii menu.

The second sub menu is displayed as "General Configurations" which is
again splitted up to several other sub menus. The first one out of
these is called "Build options" where you can choose "Build programs
which need X11 installed". However, when trying to mark this feature I
get a error that another option is required for X11 support, but not
precisely which one - just a general error !

Quite amazing since the only option bevor this one would be "Code
maturity level options" which is above "General Configurations" and
this feature is enabled!

Would someone kindly help?

You could go to

http://www.edlug.ed.ac.uk/Mirrors/Debian/dists/potato/cpbotha

where you will find .deb packages of XFree86 4.0.1 compiled for potato. I
burned everything from dists downward (if I remeber correctly) on a CD and
used it with apt-cdrom. Worked like a charm and got me X running on my
Geforce 2 GTS card. If you want the fancy GeForce 2 Graphics, you will
probably have to get Nvidia's drivers from their website.

I only recently installed this and have not experimented too much with it.

I experimented only briefly, but as far as I remember, I could only get
XFree86 3.3.1 to work in 640x480 and 16 colors.

Regards and good luck,

help news

2000-11-23 Thread Russ Cook
I am trying to use Suck and Cnews to download articles from my ISP and
deliver to a local news server for offline reading with Netscape
Communicator. I (think) I have Suck and Cnews properly configured - at
least, I can manually initiate a news dump with the command
"suck news.flash.net -U myusername -P mypasswd -dm
/var/spool/news/in.coming"

I can see that message get loaded to in.coming. But, nothing happens from
there. When using Netscape, it connects to my localhost, but the
newsgroups always show as empty. The files don't get moved from in.coming
to the appropriate directories under /var/spool/news.

Are there additional programs or scripts that I need besides Suck and
Cnews to complete the process? If so, could someone please point me to
them, or provide me some sample scripts? I would like to have certain
newsgroups automatically downloaded periodically and available offline
to my browser. I don't seem to have any cron scripts installed to do
this.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Russ

Checkout sane, not potato specific, just generic linux scanner support.
first check if your scanner is supported (look in /usr/share/doc/sane if
sane is installed).

don't ask me questions about sane, i never used it.

install sane & xsane, posibly sane-gimp1.1/xsane-gimp1.1 if you want
to interface with gimp1.1

Yowza! Watch out for those model numbers, and don't assume two cards with
similar names are really related. Apparently the FA311 does not use the
tulip driver. Try a google search on FA311 and linux. It looks like some
people have complaints about it, but if you plow through the hits you'll

Too much work, that is why I bought the commercial OSS Linux drivers.
I tried the kernel module route and the ALSA drivers but had no success.

I will have to buy the drivers again soon, since I believe my 3 years of

Depending on your skill level, and how much you really want this, you
can try extracting the footer-related section from the letter class and
putting that in the g-brief class (or inputting it separately). If you
do this, just make a new class. I've done similar stuff with modifying
the seminar.cls style to get rid of borders, or modifying bibliography
styles to allow for a Bachelor's thesis. Just keep in mind that TeX
really is a different language from LaTeX and you'll be fine

This is more of a question to the readers of this thread than directly to

What are the ramifications of turning portmapper on or off? I've gotten the

Portmapper maps the RPC services to ports. The list of services it
deals with are listed in /etc/rpc. Most of them deal with clustered
computing, so you'll need to run portmap if you're using nfs, yp, or (I
think) trying to do a beowulf-type setup. Otherwise, you probably don't
need it. You could try doing a `rpcinfo -p localhost` to find out what
your computer is making available.

> Is there an alternative to running portmapper?

Portmap is a fairly big security risk, since it allows lots of new
access to your machine. You may remember a recent rpc.statd exploit
that could have been prevented if the target machine was not running
portmap. Of course, if you need it, then you need it. Use TCP wrappers
to protect yourself. If you're behind a firewall, this is less of an
issue, but layered security is still the way to go.

Jeff, Bruce is correct here. Just curious, do you have the box handy
which the card came in?. You can get the model number off of that or
by looking at the card itself. My cards also came with a floppy called
"Drivers and Diagnostic Disk". It has Micro~s??t DOS on it but if you
mount it up , you may find some Linux drivers. All of mine did. I have
the FA311 drivers on my floppy btw and can send them to you offlist if
these are the ones you need and for some reason you can't get them off
your floppy. (I'd check your floppy first of course.)

The exact model I have is Netgear FA311 REV-A1. I also have the other
models as well.

Jeff, here is another "gotcha" you may want to watch for when compiling
your own drivers. Go to /usr/doc/kernel-source-? and look at the
README.header.gz. There is a big messy issue with kernel headers wrt to
/usr/include/asm and /usr/include/linux. I do know form personal
experience that compiling with /usr/include/linux and the /usr/src/linux
headers makes nonfunctional drivers. Some vendors tend to make
assumptions which aren't valid at present.

Good luck, 15 hours to get a device to work is a real pain.
Been there, done that. (:

i think the work is a better choice than $20, i was literally about
to go to buy it and then alsa started to work for me.. but
now there is a kernel module so it is really easy everytime i recompile
the kernel.

if you know what you are doing, it isn't that hard, if you have debian,

I've got a variety of 2.4.0-test{10|11pre6|11} kernels on largely stock
potato systems.

> is there any gotchas?

You need the modutils from woody - the layout of
/lib/modules/ changed as of 2.4.0-test6. The woody sources
compile fine on potato.

Oh and some drivers have been renamed - rtl8139 is now 8139too, etc.

> looking at the Documentation/Changes file it seems to suggest using
> glibc 2.2 is this required?

No it's not required

Documentation/Changes is better looked as a "guideline" as to what you
whould be running - often you won't have any trouble running with slightly
old packages; ie e2fsprogs 1.18 vs e2fsprogs 1.19.

Just keep in mind that if you have trouble with a certain feature and you
are using the older userland programs the kernel developers will tell you
to upgrade.

> and if so is there any gotchas installing glibc from woody on potato?

Um... somehow I think you would be better off switching to woody :)

I'm using *basically* the same configuration (MTA: exim, MDA: procmail, MUA:
mutt POP3-GET-MY-MAIL-WHEN-I-NEED-IT-APP-:] : fetchmail). Maybe I can help?

> However when trying to
> connect receive mail from my remote server fetchmail does not seem to be
> passing the mail to exim and therefore I am receiving no mail in the jmj
> mail box.

My understanding of fetchmail is that it does not really "hand" mail over to
exim; it injects mail into the SMTP stream heading to exim. Fetchmail is
really a separate application from the rest of your mail setup.

> Does nay one have any idea a how I can rectify this problem? Also
> if fetchmail is not transferring mail to exim where is it putting it?

Again, my understanding is that "fetchmail" does not "put" mail anywhere; it
just makes sure that mail it is grabbing is placed into the SMTP stream for
exim to pick up.

I do not know how much experience you have, etc., etc. so I'm going to ask you
to answer a few "newbie" questions (besides, as a programmer, I've found that
it always helps to "run the checklist" from time to time :) )

1. Do you have a mailbox in /var/spool/mail/

I'm pretty sure that exim, by default, delivers mail to
/var/spool/mail/. Verify you have a local mailbox.

2. Are you using a smarthost (i.e. you chose option 2 when setting up
eximconfig)? If not, what options did you choose?

3. What is your local_hosts variable set to in /etc/exim.conf?

I had a goofy problem here; I set my local_hosts var to home.com (the
domain my email address is part of) and then could not get any mail out to
user's with the same domain because my system thought it was the mailserver
for them! Doh!

4. Could you show me/us what your .fetchmailrc file looks like. Don't forget
to hide your password when you do!

5. Is you .fetchmailrc file permissions set to 600
(i.e. chmod 600 .fetchmailrc)

6. Do you have procmail set up? Are you using a .procmailrc file?

If you use procmail, which many mutt users do for filtering and
distributing email, exim will use the rules (procmail calls them
"recipes") in .procmailrc for handling your mail.

7. Setting up mutt is a whole 'nuther situation...let's get you through
retrieving your mail from the server, then we can worry about mutt.

Normally you need to use either innxmit (if you have it) or rnews (if
you don't) to post the downloaded articles locally.

Your best bet is probably to use get-news, which is a Debian wrapper for
suck. You'll find it in the suck package.

As far as I know (I have a SiS 630), support for this chipset is built in
the SVGA xserver, no need for xsis. So use that xserver, don't use any
hardware acceleration options, and things should work.
(This chipset is very good, but there is lack of support for it in X. Its
performance in X is ridiculous compared to what it's capable of in
Windows. A shame, but I can't help, as I'm not a programmer myself.)
A better place for questions like this, if things don't work out, would be

I thought this meant the card was recognized, but cat /proc/sound

Ok. Let me suggest you some.

1) es1371 is not an OSS/Free driver, so that a cat /proc/sound or a cat
/dev/sndstat won't produce anything.
2) es1371 also does not support a cat file.wav > /dev/dsp. You need a
normal program to do it. Try apt-get install sox and then use the
command "play".
3) If you're not listening to anything, remember to turn on the speakers
because this chip doesn't have an amplificator. Also, most of the time
the mixer is set up with a very low volume with which you can't hear
anything.

Well, that's it.

Good luck.

AFAIK there is an 3.3.6 Xserver for SiS cards. Not sure if it includes
your chipset. Then, the `normal' SVGA server also has support for
SiS.

If you can't execute the binary file, maybe you are just lacking the
executable bit. Try
chmod +x filename

Russ,

Before you go to all that work, if you only have one or a small number
newsreaders, have a look at leafnode. It basically replaces both suck
and cnews/inn. It is trivial to set up and works pretty well for the
case of a few readers and a fairly small number of subscribed groups.
You can be reading news with leafnode and your favorite news client

On my machine it's just '/usr/sbin/get-news' in a cron job (well, it
would be if I didn't have various hacks around it to grab users'
.newsrcs and automatically add them to the sucknewsrc). I'm using INN
rather than cnews, but the procedure looks like it should be the same.

You may have a load of downloaded articles in /var/spool/suck, and batch
files for them in /var/state/suck; to post those without having to
download them again, something like 'rnews your.news.server <
/var/state/suck/batch.whatever' should work (see the end of
/usr/sbin/get-news), followed by removing the batch files and
/var/spool/suck/your.news.server.

Setting up eth1 interface

2000-11-23 Thread Sean Norris,,,

Hello All,

I have been trying to set up a small local network with a linux box as a
gateway and my wife's win98 laptop.

I am running potato with a fresh 2.2.17 kernel from kernel.org.
Currently, a D-link DE-530TX is working well with a tulip driver loaded
as a module to connect to my cable modem. The second NIC is a linksys
LNE-100TX ver. 4.0, which also uses the tulip driver.

However, I cannot get the eth1 interface to initialize.

  #ifconfig eth1 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 up
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: unknown interface: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device
eth1: unknown interface: No such device

In my /etc/network/interfaces file there is no entry for eth1.
  eth0 is : iface eth0 inet dhcp
so I tried adding : "iface eth1 inet"

Now with #ifup eth1, I get the error
/etc/network/interfaces: too few parameters for iface line

So, I think that I am almost there I just cannot find any information on
what options should be on that line. Or am I not really supposed to be
editing that file directly?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have this working with the alsa drivers (http://www.alsa-project.org/)
and am very happy with the setup. Setting up the drivers is pretty
simple as long as you have the kernel headers installed correctly (if
you built your own kernel then you do). Speakfreely is a nice app, and
the alsa drivers seem to work well in full duplex mode. You'll need
the snd-card-ens1371 module and probably the oss emulation stuff.

The documentation on the alsa site is fairly good. I was able to
get it running first time through.

You probably need to add "static" to that line. And you will need to
add at least address and netmask entries for that interface. Man
interfaces for details.

iface eth1 inet static
address 192.168.1.1
netmask 255.255.255.0

<*> Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI 97 (ES1371)

I use a sb32 (pnp pci) sound card, it works great.

Also, make sure your speakers are plugged in and
use a program to adjust your levels (I like 'aumix')
your levels my be so low you can't hear the sound.

i would use iptables to block port 25 from all but localhost,

Broken gmc

2000-11-23 Thread Kai Weber
Hi,

since last update of serveral packages (woody) gmc stopped working on my
Gnome dsektop running sawfish as window manager. I do not know, wehre to
file the bug -- yes, the problem of mixed packages from
helix/debian/unofficial ressources. I just want to know: anyone with the
same problem?

I just created a new user to check, but it does not work either. Here a
line from .gnome-errors:

GnomeUI-ERROR **: file gnome-icon-item.c: line 304 (get_default_font):
assertion failed: (default_font != NULL) aborting...

And gmc stops working with a dialog window containing

gmc --sm-client-id

and an error message saying the program may be defect or something. See
a snapshot under http://www.tu-ilmenau.de/~bond/gmcsnap.jpg

Are you sure the module loaded ? sounds like some kind of driver problem.
'lsmod' will tell you more about that, also you could take a look at the
output of 'dmesg'. Maybe that will tell you what went wrong.

First of all establish whether Exim is listening on port 25

$ telnet localhost 25

You should get a response like this

Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 glynthebearded.localdomain ESMTP Exim 3.12 #1 Thu, 23 Nov 2000 20:57:55

If that works then Exim is where you want it and your problems lie
elsewhere.

How about letting us have a look at your .fetchmailrc?

Some good stuff on setting up fetchmail is on Martin Holland's Noether Linux
site
www.noether.freeserve.co.uk

and for a well-commented .muttrc for beginners try Telsa at

Sorry - one other thought. In your .fetchmailrc put a line like this

set syslog

That will send information to /var/log/maillog, which should enable you to
discover exactly what fetchmail is doing!

Do persevere - you hve the winning combination there!

Good luck

USB is not properly supported in Linux until the 2.4 kernel (the one that
still hasn't
been officially deemed 'stable'. This gives you two options

a) Run a 2.4 series kernel

b) Run a 2.2 series kernel with a patch applied to add USB support.

The good news is the HP5200C is listed as working in USB mode under linux.
Have a surf around http://linux-usb.org and its links to find all the
information you
should need.

PS: Let us know how you go, I would certainly be interested because I have
the same scanner and haven't yet got around to setting it up under Linux :)

4.x.x has been released REQUIRES that /etc/X11/XF86Config to have a
Driver line for each device. The following is a sample of my
/etc/X11/XF86Config file before and after the fix.

Before 4.x.x (which produced the same error codes as you have
described.)

Section "Device"
  Identifier"Primary Card"
  VendorName"DIAMOND"
  BoardName "VIPER 330"
  VideoRam 4064
EndSection

After 4.x.x

Section "Device"
  Driver"nv"
  VendorName"NVIDIA"
  Identifier"Primary Card"
  VendorName"DIAMOND"
  BoardName "VIPER 330"
  VideoRam 4064
EndSection

After adding Driver "nv", all but one of my problems were solved. The
"new" driver does not support 32 bit color. I had to drop down to 24
bit color...oh well. I can live with it. I am not going to look into it

I have always found it simplest to do this by way of the net. The
rdate command contacts a time-date server and sets your system-clock
accordingly. I don't know which servers are available in Germany, but
for the US there is, for instance:

   rdate time.nist.gov

Once you've done this, you can synchronize the system clock and the
hardware clock with:

   hwclock --systohc

I hope this is useful,

Re: Tried apt-get install unzip without sucess!

2000-11-23 Thread Robert Waldner
unzip is in non-free. to use non-free packages you have to have a
non-free source in your /etc/apt/sources.list like
   deb ftp://ftp.at.debian.org/debian-non-US potato/non-US main \
   contrib non-free

then run ´apt-get update; apt-get install unzip"

I added these lines and the static option ( thanks for the man reference
). However, I still get the same error when I use #ifup eth1.

I am as sure as I can be with my experience. That is, I have full web
access and am sending this email over the eth0 card with that module.
I did #lsmod

Module Size Used by
loop7808 0 (unused)
tulip 30680 1
sound 57356 0 (unused)
soundlow 344 0 [sound]

No errors were found when I looked at dmesg.

tulip.c:v0.91g-ppc 7/16/99 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
eth0: Digital DC21041 Tulip rev 33 at 0xc400, 00:80:C8:6C:61:3C, IRQ 5.
eth0: 21041 Media table, default media 0800 (Autosense).
eth0: 21041 media #0, 10baseT.
eth0: 21041 media #4, 10baseT-FD.
eth0: 21143 10baseT link beat good.
eth0: 21143 10baseT link beat good.

However, there were some errors that flew by at boot that are not
there. From what I saw they were modprobe errors complaining about my
lp module. How can I see the complete log of what flashes by at boot?
I looked at the man dmesg, but the -n switch just returned no messages
at all. I had some trouble with modules but I thought that had been
resolved with a fresh install this morning and the recompiled kernel
from fresh sources. ( I have been fighting with this problem on and off
for over a month, but I will fix it today if the coffee holds out)

By the way, I have a gnome ( with helix gnome ) desktop. Currently,
using Mozilla for mail since my local mail also isn't yet working. Is
there a way to directly send standard output to the gnome "clipboard"
instead of dmesg > dmesg.txt and then cutting from there?

Thanks

Sean

Re: Broken gmc

2000-11-23 Thread Jeff Hornsberger
Yes, this same thing happens to me with any new users I create. It
doesn't happen to me in my profile ever though so there must be
something in the default config files created for new users. This is not
a problem of mixed packages with Helix because I've never installed
anything from Helix. I haven't looked into this any further because I
don't really care that much about adding new users. -Jeff

Ok. Running rnews leaves me with a large batch file in

the batch file processed by localhost and posted to the

I'm working on it. Just recompiled my kernel the other day to support
firewalling but haven't had time to work on the iptables and other
configuration issues.

@home is way too broad in their description of "server". I understand
that their intent is to limit bandwidth since it is a shared resource
but their one-size-fits-all policy is ridiculous.

I must have spent the better part of an hour arguing with them and explaining
that I wasn't a home business and did not need their "@work" services but that
I had some unusual needs as a programmer -- like wanting to run a webserver
on my own machine for use by myself and a small group of others for
development only!

Before anyone says it, I would have gone DSL but I can't get it where I am...
the switches are setup for it yet. Sucks.

They would not go for it. They were especially not helpful after I, point
blank, told them that their policy only served to conserve bandwidth for
use by teenagers pirating software, stolen music and porn. Hmmm...maybe
I shouldn't have told them that, huh? :)

Mutt does have pop3 support, but it isn't very good. I actually found it
surprisingly easy to set up fetchmail. I think the issue may be a faulty
exim configuration here.

X4 DRI works on my G400!??

2000-11-23 Thread Svante Signell

Hello,

After help from various people DRI is now working on my Debian Woody
440BX/ZX Celeron SMP box with MGA G400 DH 32MB no max, SB live using
alsa and kernel-2.4.0-test11. Thank you all, especially for the hints
about processor type entry in the kernel configuration and the need
for interrupt enabling for the video card in the BIOS.

I have a few additional questions/comments:

1. Anybody knows why the 2x Mode for AGP is not working?
   (XFree86.0.log: Option AGPMode2x not used)

2. Is it safe to use the OverClockMem option?

3. Any other useful options?

4. Other useful BIOS settings?

5. Do the use of MatroxHal library improve performance in addition to
   eg. DH support?

6. Running the first timedemo in Q3A gives 40-42 fps, without any sound
problems. However, running the intro video sequence the sound is
partially heavily distorted or muted. Is there a mismatch between
the resources between the video and the sound card?

7. Running gnome and eg. xosview is reducing the frame rate for
Q3A. Is there a way for the kernel and/or X4 to lower the priority for
processes not visible on the screen?

Thanks,
Svante Signell

so fetchmail -v shows that it is going to the mta? if it is, then
it's probably a config error like you said.. right now i'm working
on a pop3->queue program for my mta so once i get that done (probably
won't take more than a day), i will be able to get rid of fetchmail..
one step closer to elminating all the programs that i didn't make!
