Re: X4 and DRI

2000-11-17 Thread John
Im using a voodoo5 5500.

I think i have seen this mentioned elsewhere, the problem is the dri kernel
module is
a different version from what the X server expects . A bit like mixing kernel
modules
with a different kernel :).
I started playing with X4, shortly before they came into woody so i have the X
server
sources and compile my own from the source. Im not sure if they are included in
debs
??.

The place to check out would be dri.sourceforge.net follow the links you will
find
some mail lists.

cheers

Re: installing netscape

2000-11-17 Thread John Galt

Neither navigator nor communicator are part of Debian proper, so won't be
on the CDs--they're not DFSG free, so are in the non-free section
(which is not officially supported by or officially part of Debian). Some
vendors include a non-free CD, but a good portion do not. Once you set up
apt for ftp/http, assuming you answered the non-free question in setup so
that you could get non-free, just apt-get it.

Creating Debian image for installfests

2000-11-17 Thread Jesse Goerz
Our local LUG is doing installfests once a month and it seems I'm the only
Debian user in the whole bunch (the damn heretics!;-)

I would like to get some advice on this:

I'm trying to create a bare bones system with all the things a new Linux user
would be semi-familiar with. (i.e. Netscape, KDE2 desktop, etc.) Is it
possible to install the above on a machine, and then do:

dpkg --get-selections

>From that output, create a cdrom which is a Debian install CD with only those
packages?

What I'm getting at is basically a Debian 2.2r0 binary 1 disc with all the
stuff I wouldn't be using stripped out and the extras added in (like
netscape, kde2, etc.) I could then just burn a whole bunch and just give
them to the folks (licensing issues for stuff that may fall into non-free?).
I've already created an apt-getable cd-rom with the kde2 stuff so I
understand how to do that. What I'm having difficulty with is what to strip
out and what not to. Perhaps a script to rm everything EXCEPT what is from
dpkg --get-selections? Is this possible? Am I on the right track?

I really have to do this because the rpm guys in my LUG are all bragging up
that they have kde2 already up on their systems. (I've had it up since Ivan
put out the first packages! God bless apt!) Plus I want to blow them all
away with how easy Debian's PM is to use. I must have converts;-)

What do you mean I have to install it in a certain order and what the hell is
a dependency?

yes, remove netscape 6 and run:

apt-get update
apt-get install mozilla

mozilla is much better then netscape 6 which is just an older mozilla
snapshot with lots of AOL crap layered on top. however mozilla is
still a bit sluggish compared to netscape 4 (mostly in the UI, the
rendering tends to be faster)

softwareraid

2000-11-17 Thread Manuel Hendel
Hi,

I have to setup a machine with a sofwareraid, just a mirror. Which
tool should I use, raidtools, raidtools2 or mdutils?

I already set up the machine on one disk. I made the five partitions,
boot, root, swap, usr, var. Is it possible to mirror the whole disk
and boot from the boot partition? By the way, I got debian potato
installed.

Thanks fot any help,
Manuel

I don't think so. Had to install Quake for a friend and it looks like
this is just a frontend for playing an already installed version of

In your /etc/isdn/device.ippp0 there should be an entry like:

Set the xxx to your desired time (in seconds).

Re: softwareraid

hi ya manuel..

sounds like you want a "root-boot mirror"...not just mirroring..
which is trickier...
- i say just run lilo on the mirrored disk...
each time you change the booting thingies
  ( kernels, lilo, etc )
- than it should boot if you do get to hdb instead of hda
- why make it complicated ???

if / or the / partition dies...you've got bigger problems
than just mirroring anyway.mirroring wont hide the source/cause
of the problems...

VALinux box -> NT4 -> Debian emergency!

2000-11-17 Thread Rory Campbell-Lange
Hi.
I've an urgent question, and I'd be most grateful if anyone with an answer
or advice would reply to me directly, as I only receive the digest for the
debian-user list.

I'm trying to propel my office which currently uses NT4 servers to serve
Mac workstations, to Linux servers. We need a new box and I've contacted
VALinux in the UK to spec one of these out. We have to have a box by the
end of next week!

A small complication as that we need to practise installing NT4 onto the
new server as we have a completely new IT support department who don't have
much experience in this area. I'd like to get the VALinux box, possibly
take out the hard drive/s and put in a temporary hd, install NT4, then put
back the Linux hard disks and reinstall lilo.

I'm very inexperienced with lilo, mbrs etc. I'd be grateful for any
comments on the feasibility and likely problems of the procedure I've
outline above.

Thanks for any help
Rory

bc - calculator

2000-11-17 Thread Joerg Johannes
Hi all

I have a lot of data that has to be processed, means 100 numbers having
to be divided by another 100 numbers. I did a job like this for adding
numbers to others by
bc < input-file > output-file
with input-file:
one # eg. 199+243
operation # 198+392
per # 193-232
line# 195+3556

This was really great and saved me hours of time. The problem is now,
that I have to do the same thing with divisions, meaning 3/4 = 0.75. But
bc spits out 3/4 => 0 and 4/3 => 1. Any Idea how I can change this
behaviour to get the real results? Would save me some more hours...

thanks

did you logout after adding yourself to group dip? group membership
does not take effect until the next login.

to check run `id' or `groups' and see if dip is listed.

yup looks like you need to logout and relogin. if you already did
that make sure your really a member of group dip, maybe something got
hosed in /etc/group or /etc/gshadow.

that will also cause this problem, though the error above still looked
more like you were not a member of group dip... make sure

I don't use bc but dc. There I have to say
5 k
to get 5 digits of decimal fractions. In bc, syntaxis is different, but
probably you'll have to do something similar.

What does "bind for domain name resolution" mean? Does the mashine
want to contact a internet nameserver?

Surprising that today after boot-up GOOFY _can_ ping MINI by name, but
not MICKEY. What I didn't seem to had made clear was that all mashines
can ping each other by IP adress except MINI vs MICKEY. How can I
achive that?

Since I do not have a internet dial on demand - I really cannot

Guessing "gawk" is a tool and "man gawk" failed - I tried a "apt-cache
search gawk" which returned the package:

dpkg-awk

..which I then installed from CD#1 - but it didn't help in the make
process, neither has a gawk manpage been installed.

Could you give me a hint?

Besides, emacs causes some difficulties:
I edited the makefile first and closed emacs. Then I realized that I
had missed something and opened the same makefile with emacs again.
Any editing command failed with a beep and a remark buffer read-only.
What had happened?
At the end only vi helped - puh... what a difficult editor to use...

You can use a command like 'scale=2' to bc to tell it to give you two
decimal places for floating-point arithmetic. So:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ bc --quiet
scale=2
3/4
.75

i have found its certainly more of a pig, and its interface is very
sluggish, it does tend to be less stable too, but only for certain
sites. i think for most people sticking with netscape 4.75 is
probably the best thing for now.

having said that, netscape 6 is still far worse then mozilla, don't be

Odd. Does the user you're running emacs as have write permissions to the

Soundblaster AWE 64: potato package update wrecked sound

2000-11-17 Thread Berthold Cogel
Hello!

I had a working sound configuration until last weekend with Debian 2.2,
Kernel 2.2.17 and Soundblaster AWE 64 Gold.
Then I decided to update my system from potato-stable (about 32
packages/25 MB). Since the next reboot the module sb wants to use IRQ7
and sound isn't working anymore.
This happened before after I updated my system from Debian 2.1 to Debian
2.2. I did a lot of things like disabling the BIOS support for PNP
Operating Systems, building a kernel without sound, disabling isapnp,
deleting modules.conf. Just like a blind chicken looking for food :-(.
Somehow I managed to revive the sound.

This time I updated only some packages. I didn't change the sound
configuration!

base-config0.32   ->  0.33.2
base-passwd3.1.7  ->  3.1.10
debconf0.2.80.16  ->  0.2.80.17
dpkg   1.6.14 ->  1.6.15
dpkg-dev   1.6.14 ->  1.6.15
make   3.78.1-8   ->  3.79.1-1.potato
makedev2.3.1-44   ->  2.3.1-46.2
modutils   2.3.11-8   ->  2.3.11-10

Additionally I updated some XFree-3.3.6 Packages.

What the h... is going on. This is weird.
Now I`m looking for 'professional' help

Thanks in advance

the stability is ok for a beta software, but it's far too slow, cause it
loads an entire new operating system... this may be nice, but in the moment i
would only like to use the nice gecko engine for compatibility tests and some
sites that can't be rendered properly with khtml.

Yes netscape 6 is definitely slow. People having the bandwidth anf feeling
adventorous may be better of downloading a recent nightly of mozilla(post M18).
It is definitely faster and a lot stabler and gives the appearence that the
developers are doing a good job at tweaking it.
An even better proposition will be to use something like Galeon which uses the
gecko rendering engine but is not as bulky as mozilla. Works great for me for
light duty web browsing. For other work back to Netscape 4.75. :)

Re: Creative Soundblaster PCI238 and kernel

2000-11-17 Thread Michael Epting
In 2.4.0-test10, it´s Creative Ensoniq AudiioPCI 97 (ES1371). I have
heard that some older PCI128´s might be ES1370, which is also available.

If you check the archives, you will find several people saying that you
need the ALSA drivers to make this card work. I can verify that it works
with ALSA, but I recently made a second stab and now have it going with
just the kernel modules. The trick is to have only this line in
/etc/modutils/audio:
alias sound-slot-0 es1371

When I was using ALSA I had problems with the sound breaking up when the

CISCO --> debian tool(s)

2000-11-17 Thread Debian Ghost
Hey Guys,
I was wondering if there were any debian tools used for working with Cisco
routers and/or other Cisco gear. I was thinking about things like
analytical tools and configuration tools. Mainly I am interested in
anything that is happening now and/or being developed.

Any info much appriciated!

'Stable' tracks 2.2r0, 2.2r1,...?

2000-11-17 Thread Monte Milanuk
Hello,

A simple question here:

If I have a machine that is using apt-get to stay in sync
w/ the security updates and bug fixes in stable, does this
automatically keep it up w/ the latest stable version?
i.e., my install cd's were 2.2r0. Now 2.2r1 is out. Soon
(hopefully) 2.2r2 will be out. Will apt-get automatically
keep up w/ the latest stable release, using the default
settings for stable in /etc/apt/sources.list, or do I need
to change something? I would hope/think that it would, I
am just looking for a confirmation from someone who knows.

Thanks,

Monte

Hi,

I know that cisco has a product that work on solaris and NT, not yet on linux
but they are working on it.
Actually i use minicom to configure debug and monitor what's happening on my
ciscos and i'm really glad about it. ;o)
To monitor cisco routers and/or NAS, you can use rrdtool and mrtg to get info
about bandwith, and snmp to reconfigure the cisco on the fly (for example in
combination with lids).

m4 (to create configuration files)
mrtg (to get stats from the boxes)
mon (to monitor the boxes)
telnet (just in case)

uh,uh. things start getting complicated, especially because i missed the
beginning of the thread. from what i can figure out, your configuration
is the following:
   GOOFY
  (192.168.1.1)eth0 eth1(192.168.2.1)
/ \
   /\
(192.168.1.2) MICKEYMINI (192.168.2.2)

and on goofy your hosts file is
 #file /etc/hosts
 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.domain
 192.168.1.1 GOOFY.ORION.DE GOOFY
 194.25.2.129 t-online.de t-online
 192.168.2.2 MINI.ORION.DE MINI
 192.168.1.2 MICKEY.ORION MICKEY

first: DONT use real (internet) domain names if you ever want to connect
your system to the internet. this will save you a lot of troubles.

- Can all machines ping each other by IP ?(that would mean IP-forwarding
  works)?

- Who can ping whom by name? thats a matter of name resolution. i noticed
  that you have
  192.168.2.2 MINI.ORION.DE MINI
  but only
  192.168.1.2 MICKEY.ORION MICKEY
maybe thats the source for some of your problems.

- How do the /etc/hosts files of the clients (mickey, mini) look like?
if you want them to ping each other by name you will have to do one
  of the following:
+ keep correct hosts files on every client. bad idea, esp. if you want
to attach more clients to your network.
+ serve /etc/hosts by NIS. thats what i would do for a home network.
+ install a DNS server on goofy for your domain. maybe too sophisticated
for just a few clients - except you want to learn how to run a DNS
server...

What i did not catch at all: why are you serving two clients by two NICS?
would make sense only for an exercise on 'how to configure ipforwarding'

greets,
/stefan.

I just installed Skipstone, and it looks good (suits me better than
Galeon, at least). Apart from being leaner than Mozilla/Netscape (small
wonder, it aims to do much less), it has the one single feature which
made me pay for the Opera browser (on another well-loved OS whose name I
will not mention here :-) ).

The feature I mean is this: you can switch Skipstone to "tabbed" mode,
and all browser windows are contained in one single "real" window (read:
MDI mode). But it still gets better: if you open a link in a new window
now, the new window is opened *behind* the current window. That is, you
can open a list of links with just a few clicks, and don't need to
constantly shuffle windows around. Nice feature for people who browse
"breath-first", like me. Granted, it's only one click less then with
other browsers, but it's still nice and definitively makes the desktop
less cluttered.

apt-get install kernel-source-2.2.15
cd /usr/src
tar -xIf kernel-source-2.2.15.tar.bz2
cd kernel-source-2.2.15
make config or make menuconfig or whatever you like to configure your
kernel with...
make-kpkg --revision yourkernel1 kernel_image
dpkg -i ../kernel-image-2.2.15_yourkernel1_i386.deb

this assumes you have make-kpkg installed(apt-get install make-kpkg)

err... you have to do the above as root. this is generally considered not to be
a good idea. if you want to be pedantic, add yourself to group src and do the
above as you, using fakeroot for make-kpkg.

hope that helps,

I'm not going to try and tutuor you on MBR & such (there are several good
howtos available on the web and with any standard debian installation about
dual-booting (search for windows, NT, etc...), which go into detail about how
OS's boot.

As for what you had in mind, sure, just pull out the drive(s), put in a new
one, practice the dark rituals you need to, and then replace the temporary
drive with the original(s). Nothing else has to be done if you didn't change
the BIOS settings (the boot manager is located on the drive). NOTE: as with
any OS, if you have multiple drives, they should all be re-instlalled in
exactly the same way they were when you took them out, or your system won't
boot.

there should be a line in your /etc/apache/httpd.conf:

and in your /etc/apache/srm.conf:

i can't imagine that this is really necessary. have you tried different
floppies ? - they are an extremely unreliable medium... maybe you should
even try to d/l the image again - there could have been some error during
downloading it.

of course you can't mount these floppys as ext2 (or any other fs) - they
just contain an image (or, in the case of root.bin, a compressed image)
of a filesystem.
if you have the loop-device compiled in your kernel, you can mount the
images in the following way:

mount -o loop rescue.bin /mnt

or

mv root.bin root.bin.gz;gunzip root.bin.gz;mount -o loop root.bin /mnt

btw, syslinux.cfg is in rescue.bin ...

hope that helps,
/stefan.

I like efax. It works with Class 1 modems too which is a bonus. It handles PS
files very well and knows what to do. In fact, it relies on ghostscript to
generate the fax image files.

I'll take a look at that before I post again. One thing I figured out after
I posted; the problem seems to be with apt-move packages. It actually moves
the files that are present on the remote ftp site, but the Packages.gz files
are not created on my mirror directories if there are any .deb files present.

Strange behavior in X

2000-11-17 Thread Casey Henderson
Hi,
I'm getting some weird display behavior in X and I need some help. I
do a lot of work using virtual consoles. Quite often when I'm in a
virtual console, if I press ctrl-alt-f7 to get back to X, my screen
goes blank. I try to go back to a virtual console by pressing
ctrl-alt-f1 (or f2 - f6) and the screen remains blank. I have to
reboot the computer by either pressing ctrl-alt-delete (which usually
works) or by pressing the reset button or power switch. This wouldn't
be so bad if it were a once-in-a-while thing, but it happens very
often, like more than once a day. One of the reasons I switched to
Linux from Windoze was because I could keep it running for
days/weeks/months without having to reboot. With this weird behavior
I'm getting, I have to reboot my computer several times a day, which
isn't much better than Windoze. Can anybody help me out here? Thanks.

You could have a look at your videocard and stuff...
What Xserver are you running ? What's your videocard.

There are many things you have to specifiy before someone else can
answer it.

Well, I can't use the Woody version, it depends on a new version of libc6
(which could possibly break lots of stuff), and libstdc++, which doesnt' seem
to have an installation candidate (strange... apt knows about it...).

So, I'm back to square one. Anyone else using apt-move on a Potato system?

How did you install your new kernel - maybe you didn't install the new
System.map?
if you didn't do it that way: you should really use make-kpkg to make a debian

Re: what fax software do you suggest?

2000-11-17 Thread USM Bish
For small time requirements that you envisage, the
efax program is good enough. It is on the main sub
dir of Debian. Has an utility called "efix" which
does the job of conversion between fax, text, bit-
map, greyscale, ps and other formats.

For heavier workload, most people vouch for mgetty
+ sendfax. Don't have personal experience on this
combination. I have used "kfax" (kde) in the past
without any problems ... However, for the rare few
faxes out of my system "efax" was the final choice
for me. Small, efficient, no-frills software which
works !!!

Recommendation: Do an apt-get for efax.

installing multiple versions of a given package

2000-11-17 Thread Walter Tautz
I am curious to know whether it would be possible to have
two or more version of a given package exist compatibly and
have the alternatives tool be able to pick one.

REASON. Sometimes the features of one version are so annoying that
one isn't interested in the `newer' version. I suppose most people's
answer would be: put the older version in /usr/local?

One problem with having multiple version of a given package is
the fact that common filenames would exist. How to resolve this?
I see one solution:

Put the files of a package in its own directory and then add links
via the alternatives tool into /usr/bin/ /bin/ etc. It would also
be convenient if the individual user could control what version
he has access to by creating his own internal alternatives link tree.

The ability to put links into /usr/bin /bin would al least preserve the
FHS...

So to summarize:

Ability to install multiple version of a given package

Individual user access to alternatives functionality

Some consequences:
=

How would apt figure out to update or upgrade packages... presumably it
would simply offer to install the latest version without interfering
with the version you have on the system...you could also perhaps choose
to upgrade existing versions...

This brings up an obvious problem that people would be forced to
maintain more than one version Also is it possible for the
alternatives package to work for the user. Obviously the user could
use aliases if he/she wanted to use a particular editor but it might be
nice to have the alternatives tool not just work on a single system but
on a per user basis.

I suppose the notion of having multiple version would run up again the
the upgrading behaviour of apt... it also demonstrates the the problem
with having binaries in places like /usr/bin /bin rather than having a
separate directory for each package and then adding links to the
standard place like /usr/bin /bin in this way the filesystem
standard could be upheld...which is, I assume, how alternatives avoids
violating the FHS.

I second this. Efax is small, light and very dependable. It's author
(Ed Casas) and maintainer (Dirk Eddelbuettel) are both very responsive
about fixing problems quickly.

One piece of advice: if you choose to install it, you should install
the version in unstable (`woody'). There is a problem with certain US
Robotics modems in the version in stable which is fixed in the version
in `woody'. This version installs smoothly on potato systems (or did
on mine anyway),

Problems with Make and MySQL perl modules

2000-11-17 Thread Ken Januski
Hi

I downloaded msql-mysql-modules-1.2215.tar.gz today from CPAN. But when I
ran make I got these errors:
"LD_RUN_PATH -"/usr/local/." cc -o
/blib/arch/auto/DBD/mysql/mysql.so -shared -L/usr/local/lib dbdimp.o
mysql.o -L/usr/local/lib/mysql -L/usr/local/lib/mysql -/mysqlclient -lm -lz
-L/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-linux/2.95.2-lgcc
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find - lz
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status"

I think that the problem is related to linking but I'm not that familiar
with compiling and linking file so I can't be sure. But whether it is or not
the real question is how to get rid of the complaints about "cannot
find -lz". At least I THINK that is the real question. Any help would be

Re: is possible mp3?

2000-11-17 Thread Nick Zigarovich
Jaye,

You can decode the MP3 to WAV format (can be done using mpg123 -w), and
use your favorite WAV editor (waveforge, xwave, sweep) to layer in your
content.

I've never done any editing or mixing with the available Linux
utilities, so I can' thelp you with specifics. Abstractly speaking, I
would send the decoded WAV through a channel, send the layer you'd like to
add through another channel, mix the two channels, and output them to a
WAV.

If the issue is getting servers with NT and GNU/Linux preinstalled, VA
should be able to help you out in this department by preloading.

If the issue is rolling out a large number of your own NT installs, you
may want to explore a partition management or boot management tool.

Otherwise, it's fairly straightforward to load up systems in dual-boot
mode, though it's a time-consuming process, particularly on the Legacy
MS Windows side, as you can't just (legally) ghost or mirror the
installation out, AFAIK (which, in this case, isn't terribly much).

If you're just swapping disks, you won't be doing any lilo reinstalls,
you're just swapping disks.

Karsten's iron law of web browsers: they all suck.

I'm playing with (objective statements follow):

  - NS 4.57: still primary for graphics, though I curse it every time I
load it and twice on crashes.

  - w3m: secondary browser

  - lynx: for unformatting overly designed websites -- sometimes
straight text is just better

  - galeon: it's better than Mozilla. Lighter, fewer cruft features,
but still heavy on my PII-180, unstable, and with a couple of
annoying features. Slimmed down, speeded up, and stabilized, it
could be a favorite.

  - Skipstone: also nice, see galeon. There are a few feature
tradeoffs, and it's not as lightweight as I'd like it to be. A font
scaler would be good.

Question for the crowd. One of the few features of Netscape I
particularly care for is the ability to restrict font sizing range to a
small scope -- 80 - 120% rather than the 50-200% default. Anyone know a
way to restrict the range of font sizing used by tags and
 tags?

In Netscape, it's the following X resource:

Netscape*documentFonts.sizeIncrement: 05

Default is 20. This sets the font scaling step to 5% rather than 20%.

Clues?

Well give the regular xserver-svga a try. Its supports S3 Virge
and I think it less buggy (and better maintained) than the xserver-s3v.
Anyway, I have an S3 Virge card, and I've never had any problems
with xserver-svga.

Re: Apt-get UPgrade today

2000-11-17 Thread John Galt

xlibs conflicts with the version you have ATM (at least it did for me last
week when I apparently dealt with the problem). dist-upgrade should've
solved it (that WAS the whole point of dist-upgrade at one
time). If you know the culprit, just plain install it. My usual process
for unstable upgrading (the conflict you're having here happens rather
often...)

1) apt-get upgrade

2) apt-get dist-upgrade

3)CAUTIOUSLY apt-get install any packages held back. This may require
that some packages that require the old version and haven't been upgraded
in and of themselves: what can happen is that package foo can depend on
package bar only equal to version baz: you install bar of version baz+1
and package foo's dependency fails. Apt resolves dependencies from bar's
perspective and clears out anything that now has failed
dependencies. Package foo gets uninstalled. This is a sane way to do
things, unless you think that foo is more important to your work than bar.

4) if 3) fails because you don't want to uninstall a given package: wait a
week or two and try the setup again--the conflict may have resolved
itself. Brand new packages take a little longer to propagate than updated
versions, so if the package depends on a new package, it's very likely
that the dependency will remain unmet until the new package
propagates. The maintainer of the package foo might've gotten his package
to work with bar version baz+1 in the meanwhile. Either way, the problem
solves itself.

5) if 4) fails, make a value judgement: which is more important--foo or
bar or an ever increasing number of held packages while you wait out the
conflict resolution? Run with it.

It's about 3DFX glide-lib full screen 3D rendering... I remember another one to
avoid the 3DFX splash screen, something like FX_GLIDE_NO_SPLASH...

Large file support in Woody

2000-11-17 Thread Jeff Lessem
Now that woody is based on glibc2.2 I thought I would play with large
file support. Perhaps this was a mistake, as I have managed to create
a 3GB file, but I can't remove it. Any access to the file with the
fileutils package (ls, rm, etc.) returns with "Value too large for
defined data type".

I thought maybe fileutils had to just be rebuilt against the new
glibc, but after an apt-get source --build fileutils, I still get the
same error. I am sure I am missing something quite obvious, so any
pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Synchronizing the files on two machines

2000-11-17 Thread Christophe TROESTLER
Hello,

I would like to be able to synchronize the *certain* files on two
machines that are *not* directly connected to each other.

More precisely, I have to transfer data daily between two machines and
the only convenient way to do that is through floppies (ZIP /
rewritable CDs). Do you know a program that would keep a set of
files/dirs (with recursion but with possible exception of some
subdirectories and files given by regexps) synchronized on the two
machines. That means in particular that files/dirs created/deleted on
some host should be having the same treatment on the other host.
Preservation of permissions and uid/gid is important (with provision
if the numeric uid/gid differ for a given symbolic uid/gid on the two
machines ?). Ideally, it would keep a backup copy on the floppy (in
case I do something really wrong!). It would also detect if a file
has been modified on the two machines and prompt for what to do. If
the first disk is full, it should be able to `span' the data on other
ones. A report of every session would be nice.

Well, you get the idea. If you know of an utility more or less
fitting the description above, I am really interested! (I suppose I
am not the only one with such a problem.)

Thanks,
ChriS

Re: is possible mp3?

2000-11-17 Thread Scott Patterson

Of course, mp3 is a lossy format. So, every time you re-compress the mp3 it will
sound a little worse. However, since mp3's sound pretty good to start with, one
re-compression shouldn't sound much different:)

A better solution would be to squeeze the audio directly into the file. I don't
know if such a solution exists though, or is even possible.

Installation problems

2000-11-17 Thread James Copland
I'm having problems installing Debian on my system. I have the Promise
UDMA66 card, a SiS 6326 video card and an Aureal Vortex 2 AU8830 sound card.
None of these install, nor does my /dev/lp0 even though I know it is ECP, at
0x378-0x37F and 0x778-0x774 on IRQ 7 and DMA 3.

I finally worked out how to install. Instead of using floppies and then
typing some, undocumented in the install manual, parameters, I downloaded
the install from hard disk files in the udma66 directory. Once I duplicated
the way they were setup, I could boot to Debian and start the install
process.

I need to know what drivers to add to my kernel for the above devices. I am
aware that there is no support for the AU8830 other than that at
SourceForge. The Aureal package there says it works on RedHat (6.0 - 6.2
kernel 2.2.16 and 2.4) and Slackware (7.0 kernel 2.2.16 and 2.4). What are
the chances it will work on Debian?

TIA for your help,
James.
