It's part of ALSA--Basically, ALSA is looking for the alsa sound modules and not finding what it needs. You probably have your sound card configured with OSS modules, so alsa is pretty much irrelevant, but probably installed as a package dependency.. But all who run windows and execute NAVIDAD.EXE are idiots. Obviously there is at least one subscriber to the Debian-user list who meets this "idiot" criteria. I just hope the complaining servers stop battling soon. This is getting annoying. The following is the alert I received about this from McAfee: *** VIRUS ALERT - W32/[EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear McAfee.com Dispatch Subscriber: W32/[EMAIL PROTECTED] is an Internet worm that spreads using the Windows email program Outlook. McAfee AVERT has given it a risk assessment of MEDIUM-ON WATCH, due to a significant increase in infection levels worldwide. The email can come from addresses that you will recognize. Attached is a file named NAVIDAD.EXE and when it is run, it displays a dialog box entitled, "Error" which reads "UI". A blue eye icon then appears in the system tray next to the clock in the lower right corner of the screen, and a copy of the worm is saved to the file "winsvrc.vxd" in the WINDOWS SYSTEM directory. If your PC becomes infected with the W32/[EMAIL PROTECTED] worm, all subsequent emails addressed to you will be responded to automatically with an email from your address with the W32/[EMAIL PROTECTED] worm as an attachment. The "Navidad" virus is not particularly dangerous, just annoying, say security experts. It affects computers using Windows operating system, and arrives as a reply message when a user sends an email to an infected computer. The email comes with an attachment called "Navidad.exe" - if opened this contains a message in Spanish that reads: "Never press this button". If the user can't resist and presses it anyway, a message pops up saying: "Feliz Navidad. Unfortunately you have given in to temptation and will lose your computer". The user's computer isn't damaged, according to AP, largely because the virus is believed to be designed for the Spanish version of Windows. But it does place an icon on the computer that looks like an eye and stops most programs from being run. The program can be stopped manually, and several antivirus companies have come up with software that removes or protects against it. But security experts are warning emailers to watch out for the virus because it is spreading quickly around big corporations - at least ten Fortune 500 companies have been hit, with many of the infected emails coming from Brazil and Cuba. One security expert told AP that "Navidad" had already caused pre-Christmas headaches for chip giant Intel and petrol company ExxonMobil. ®

What is it?? It's the latest Windows virus. If you take a look, you'll see that one person sent out a couple dozen messages just before all the virus warnings came flooding in; it seems safe to assume that he's the one who's infected. There appear to be two separate mail servers responding to the threat with warnings, but sending them to the list rather than the originator. Whether this indicates that they're broken (sending "_you_ are infected" messages to the list instead of to the sender of the infected message) or not (they're warning everyone else on the list about the threat) is a matter of personal opinion. -- "Two words: Windows survives." - Craig Mundie, Microsoft senior strategist "So does syphillis. I don't know who it is but I've already caught the stupid virus. I'm not using Outlook, but being the fool that I am, I accidently ran his attachment, and it screwed up the file associations in Windows. Basically it associates .exe files with a nonexistant program so that when you try to run a program it won't work. I had to reinstall Windows. I didn't lose anything, but it was a pain in the arse and a waste of 45 minutes of my time. Geez. Casey -- Casey Henderson [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.cs.umaine.edu/~hender97/

On my system, i usually bump the version number of the package up by .0001 before i recompile (then again, i usually only recompile to fix a bug ;) If you put the locally compiled package into an apt source before any of the official Debian mirrors, it will keep your version instead of Debian's as long as the version numbers remain equal. For example, i have this at the top of my sources.list: deb file:/usr/local/debs / dpkg-scanpackages creates the packages file. I would be OK with blocking MS Outhouse, but not Windoze mail clients in general. Printer setup problem in potato
Hi, I'm new to Linux and to Debian. I'm just switching from CorelLinux to Debian 2.2, but I've got a problem with the installation dbootstrap script. Everything goes well until I get to configuring and installing device driver modules into the kernel. I can't configure the lp module. The script asks me to write the module's parameters, but I've no idea about what to write. It also warns me that if no parameters are given, then all parports will be grabbed. I let the script to go on by just hitting 'enter', but it fails giving me a message that either the device is not there or the parameters are wrong. Has anyone an idea about what I should write? In CorelLinux every device was correctly detected and configured. If I've got to give IRQ and DMA values, how should I determine them? Where should I look for? Thanks in advance for helping. Best wishes to all, Gian Piero

Easy Killfile using maildrop
Hi folks, This recent windoze virus nonsense has inspired me to put together a quick and easy killfile - something where I can just add an address to a file without having to make a new rule for each one. I though that someone out there might like to use it to. Please note that it uses maildrop, not procmail (as lots of people on this list seem to use). Personally, I think maildrop is cool, and I know nothing about procmail, so if someone wants to repost the procmail equivalent, please feel free. In my ~/.mailfilter file I have the following rule (up the top): LOGFILE="$HOME/.maildrop.log" KILLFILE="$HOME/.killfile" logfile $LOGFILE # Killfile if ( /^From: *!.*/ && lookup( $MATCH2, $KILLFILE )) { log "*KILLFILE* - Deleting message from $MATCH2" exit } And I have a file ~/.killfile in my home directory, to which I just need to enter a regex that describes the From: line of the offending email (be a bit careful with your regexes - it's easy to accidently kill too much!). So, for example, after todays fiasco, I have the following in ~/.killfile: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] ANTIGEN_SNOTES@ Pretty simple and easy. Certainly not sophisticated enough to stop someone who wants to forge the From: line, but it's more to stop idiots than anything. Hope that helps someone out there. cheers, damon -- Damon Muller | Did a large procession wave their torches Criminologist/Linux Geek | As my head fell in the basket, http://killfilter.com | And was everybody dancing on the casket... QM_MODULES error - modutils
Hi, I'm running Potato and had recompiled the Kernel with IP masquerading. Now I had some problems and trouble with modutils: Messages on boot up: Calculating module dependencies... depmod: QM_MODULES: Function not implemented done. I've searched the web and newsgroups looking for a solution and found some suggestions about using "depmod -av" but it only returns the same Error message: QM_MODULES: Function not implemented How do I get a "new" modules.dep "compatible" to my current modules and how should I fix the QM_MODULES error? Re: failed to connect port 25 (AGAIN!)
Hi, now I have removed postfix (/etc/init.d/postfix stop), the problem still exists. Telnet exits with the error message 'Unable to connect to remote host: No route to host'. I get this message only when I try to connect through port 25 (and that is probably the reason postfix can not send mail). Could this have something to do with firewalls? I have ip-masquerading running, but when I do a 'ipchains -F forward' (that should disable ipchains, me is told), the problem still exists. How do I solve it? Hi all, I've finally got a static IP address which I want to use instead of the dynamic one I still get from my ISP via ppp. I thought it would be best to bind the static address to the dummy interface, so my /etc/network/interfaces looks like that: auto lo dummy iface lo inet loopback iface dummy inet static address 131.220.90.230 netmask 255.255.255.128 network 131.220.90.128 broadcast 131.220.90.255 and my /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1localhost 131.220.90.230 wabe.germanistik.uni-bonn.dewabe Mostly, this works, I can ping localhost and wabe successfully. Unfortunately, not all details seems to be OK. Whereas being able to access http://localhost with Netscape, Links and Lynx, this is not possible with neither w3m, Galeon nor Skipstone (bare mozilla works). w3m won't access the index page at all, but Galeon and Skipstone show the page, but can't access any local links when offline. When online, all three browsers are working as they should. I think something is wrong in my setup. Any hints? Greetings and thanks, joachim

fullscreen apps (in X) - windowmanager support?
Hello, The best way (as far as I know the only way) to get an app to full screen in X, is to drop the resolution (assuming you have many modelines defined) to the resolution of the app, or the smalelst resolution a little larger, then to "position" the display correctly. The big problem is accidently moving the mouse, and thereby shifting the screen. Some apps support locking the mouse into the window, some apps do all this automatically. Is there a way to lock the mouse into a window without that app specifically supporting it internally? That would help a lot to begin with, but ultimately I'd like to have/write a little program/script, possibly built into a window manager (I'll temporarly switch to another WM if necessary, but I'd prefer support for this in windowmaker ;), that, given a window handle or id or whatever its called in X, will automatically drop the resolution to the best size, lock the mouse cursor into the window, and if possible, "position" the display correctly. Any ideas? Thanks, Hugo van der Merwe

It is with every mailserver I tried. Other ports work > correct. What is going on? Has it something to do with my Postfix > configuration? I had something like this happen to me last month. I found out the reason this is happening is because my ISP is blocking SMTP connections to any other ISP but their own at the router. They are doing this to stop Spam. While this may be a pain in the ass, it does help cut down Spam. Ian
soundcard log messages
I have a Soundblaster Live XGamer soundcard for which I have the alsa drivers installed and working fine. When I booted my computer this morning, dmesg gives me the following two errors: Nov 14 09:06:09 driver kernel: snd: card 1 is out of range (0-0) Nov 14 09:06:09 driver kernel: snd: Ensoniq AudioPCI soundcard #1 not found or device busy This is strange because 1) I have never seend the messages before and 2) I don't have an Ensoniq AudioPCI soundcard. The only thing I have done is unplug the speakers from the soundcard and plug in a set of headphones, but I have don't think this should have affected anything. Does anyone know why I am seeing these messages and how I can get rid of them? Thanks in advance, Anthony

Re: soundcard log messages
The Ensoniq message refers to the chipset for the SBLive.
