Bug#598837: kwrite: Kwrite regularly goes into "backwards typing" mode
Package: kwrite Version: 4:4.4.5-1 Severity: important *** Please type your report below this line *** Hi, if I use kwrite to actively edit fairly large text files (with long, wrapping lines, in dynamic wrap mode), then after about 5-10 minutes kwrite goes into "backwards typing" mode. By "backward typing" mode, I mean when I press keys, that the cursor in kwrite doesn't move, but the typed letters appear to the right of the cursor, with the effect that what you type comes out backwards. I can move the cursor around by clicking with the mouse, but when I resume typing, I still have the same problem (at the new cursor location). This is pretty annoying - the only way I've found to correct this is to restart kwrite. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-686 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_ZA.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_ZA.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages kwrite depends on: ii kdebase-runtime 4:4.4.5-1 runtime components from the offici ii libc6 2.11.2-6 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libkdecore5 4:4.4.5-1 the KDE Platform Core Library ii libkdeui5 4:4.4.5-1 the KDE Platform User Interface Li ii libkio5 4:4.4.5-1 the Network-enabled File Managemen ii libkparts44:4.4.5-1 the Framework for the KDE Platform ii libktexteditor4 4:4.4.5-1 the KTextEditor interfaces for the ii libqtcore44:4.6.3-2 Qt 4 core module ii libqtgui4 4:4.6.3-2 Qt 4 GUI module ii libstdc++64.4.4-17 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 kwrite recommends no packages. kwrite suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-qt-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#598837: Additional information
Also, there seems to be a related bug, where if I delete a few lines of text, then the cursor jumps too far up into the document. eg: in a 100 line text file, I'm on line 80, and then use shift+up 10 times (to select the 10 lines above), and then press DEL. Then the 10 lines above are deleted, but the cursor will end up on line 60 (jumps up too far, basically the same number of lines too far, as you just deleted). This doesn't happen all the time, but it seems somewhat related to the "typing backwards" bug, and it also seems to happen more regularly than the "typing backwards" issue. But when it starts happening, then it happens continuously, until I restart the editor. Though it's less annoying than the "typing backwards" issue. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-qt-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#582953: Kmail deleted all my local mail
Hi there, I just had a very unpleasant experience with kmail. I searched the Debian BTS, and this seems to be the closest report, so my report over here. I opened kmail this morning, and all my mails were gone. Checked the ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail folder, and basically empty, rather than the 700 MB of mail files I normally have there. Fortunately I had made a backup from a few days ago, so I restored that. Started kmail up again, and it deleted all those mails again during startup. WTH? Well, there are some unsual things on my side that are contributing towards this. 1. My ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail folder is really a symlink to a secondary encrypted location (an encfs directory). 2. I sometimes forget to mount that encfs share before starting kmail. Normally in this case, kmail annoyingly removes my symlinks, and makes new folders, so I have to go and tidy up after it to get to my mail again. Really annoying. 3. My kmail settings files over here, aren't symlinks into an encrypted location: ~/.kde/share/config/kmail* So basically in this case, I started kmail up (before mounting my crypt area), and it did it's normal annoying thing with my ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail symlink. So I did my normal routine of mounting my crypt area, moving the new 'kmail' directory out of the way, restoring my symlink, and then starting kmail. After which, kmail promptly proceeded to delete all my mails under ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail (in my crypt area). And it did the same again, when I restored ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail from my encrypted offsite backup drive What I _think_ is happening here is this: 1. kmail starts up, and sees that ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail looks weird, so it removes it and makes a new folder (WTH number 1, but I'm used to that by now). 2. It then proceeds to make a new set of profile settings under ~/.kde/share/config/kmail*, replacing my old settings (WTH number 2 - now I'd need to manually re-create those settings, or restore from backups) 3. Later, when I replace the new ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail with a symlink to my encfs directory, and then start up kmail again, it sees that my new ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail directory contents are now inconsistent with the "~/.kde/share/config/kmail*" settings files, and then kindly proceeds to tidy things up, to match the config files - deleting my 700 MB of mails, not just once (initially), but a second time too, when I tried to restore from backups and test it again. This is the biggest WTH. Kmail should never delete all the local mail files like that automatically, in an attempt to tidy things up to match the settings, without even warning the user. Granted, I have a really unusual setup, but it's conceivable that kmail's "fix up the user's mail directory at any costs" (parts 1-3) logic are going to cause some major problems for other people at some point. Also, it would be nice if kmail didn't always delete my kmail folder symlink at startup, if they (at that time) point to non-existent directories. Please instead give a warning dialogue, and ask the user what to do at that point. Kind regards, David. Bug#494691: kmail: huge memory usage when copying/uploading mails
Package: kmail Version: 4:3.5.9-5 Severity: normal *** Please type your report below this line *** Hi. Kmail is fast when moving mails between (local) folders, but when copying mails it takes a long time, and uses a lot of memory. Also the user interface freezes while the copy is taking places. FYI, I did copies by selecting all mails in the mail list pane (Ctrl+A), right-click, Copy To. Another very bad case, is when you have a cachedimap account, and copy files from a local folder to it. The (local) copying is slow, but what is far worse, is when you tell Kmail to synchronize. On my PC, the memory usage grew up until 1420m VIRT (according to top), and then froze and forced me to reboot my workstation. This was with about 4000 mails, with 230M of file data. Also, the IMAP backend is Zimbra 5. My requests are: 1) Don't freeze kmail gui while copying files between local folders 2) Please show the progress of local mail copies. 3) Same as above when moving between local folders. 4) Don't use up a lot of memory while copying between local folders 5) Don't use excessive memory when synchronizing cachedimap (uploading 4000 mails with 230 MB data from local cache to IMAP shouldn't use 1.4 GB). Bug#437343: It is even worse
The bug is even worse than I thought at the beginning. Even locking the screen does not work, because some minutes later the screensaver "disappears", and to make matters worse you cannot do anything with the keyboard or mouse. I had to Ctrl+Alt+Backspace By the way, I am submitting the same to the upstream, as similar bugs have been happening for many years and in different distros. I am copying one reflection that I submitted to the upstream. Maybe I was a bit tough, but that is because I am annoyed that a package so simple, and at the same time so important in a desktop, is being so buggy for so many years. The reflection I submitted to the upstream is the following: --- Reflection (maybe tough, but I hope not a flame): I had to quit using translucencies, and why? Because a malfunction of kwin? No. Because a malfunction of the video driver? No. Because a malfunction of the screensaver. I do not know much about computing, but I think a screensaver must not be so tricky as kwin or the video driver. kscreensaver is being malfunctioning for many years, with and without translucencies: not autostarting, starting but disappearing thereafter, etc. Although a desktop is terrific (KDE), if the screensaver does not work, users may think of switching to other desktops (gnome, xfce, etc). ---

When you restart KDE the daemon starts up again, and the 'Start Reminder Daemon at login' option is still checked. Bug#447731: Scroll keys do not work any more
Package: kde-i18n-engb Version: 4:3.5.8-1 Severity: grave --- Please enter the report below this line. --- I encountered two problems today with the keyboard: one solvable and another not solvable AFAIK. None of them appear when Ctrl+Alt+F1 Although my KDE is in British English, my keyboard layout was another one. Today, the layout in KDE (not when Ctrl+Alt+F1) switched to UK layout. I solved it by defining two layouts in the KDE Control Centre, but this is still a bug that should be fixed. On the other hand, for both layouts (including the UK layout), *the scroll keys do not work*. "Right", "left" and "down" do nothing. "Up" launches Ksnapshot. THIS IS THE GRAVE BUG. Since I assume many of us will be compiling for either or both, this solution (mutually exclusive packages) is not, in my mind, the best. I have requested from one dev so far that the QT_SELECT by done by his configure script. Another alternative could be a /etc/default/qtchooser. This could specify even more default properties, if desirable. Comment out the build alternative not desired #QT_SELECT=4 QT_SELECT=5 I guess a situation of name-your-poison. Bug#784868: korganizer: korgac grabs focus loosing keys and missing notifications
Package: korganizer Version: 4:4.14.1-1nograb Severity: important Tags: patch upstream Dear Maintainer, *** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate *** * What led up to the situation? * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? * What was the outcome of this action? * What outcome did you expect instead? *** End of the template - remove these template lines *** While it can make it easier to dismiss (if it grabs focus through the activateWindow call), it also means if you are typing and a reminder comes in it will both get those keystrokes and a space or return will dismiss the reminder before you have a chance to ever see what the reminder was about, which assumes you are even looking at your screen to see the reminder box flash up, if you are typing from paper you might not even know. This patch will call raiseWindow instead of activateWindow, but adds a dock menu item to grab focus if someone actually wants that behavior. While I was add it I added a dock menu item to show the reminder window, which was useful in debugging, and lets you get at items that have been suspended, alloing to view or dismiss them. This might satisfy "Bug 302865 - Inaccessible reminders" There is a code comment "Try to keep the dialog small and non-obtrusive." I've made it smaller by default, and set the minimum size even smaller than reasonable, but this is better than the previous which wouldn't let you size it smaller than the default. I added more points to save the position and improve the logic, now it will save and restore the position and size, and then show the window so it will no longer jump. Patch is against Debian 4.14.1 source tree. The korgac in the previous Debian release, 4.4.11 does not grab the keyboard when the notification dialog appears. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. set korganizer reminder 2. start typing a paragraph 3. continue typing as the notification goes off Actual Results: watch korgac reminder appear grab keyboard focus and vanish at the next space, depending on the timing you have no chance to stop typing before it is gone Expected Results: The notifier window to appear at the last location it was dismissed at and only get focus when the window manager directs focus to it. I'm flagging the severity at important, because it was so disruptive I had stopped using it until I fixed it. >From bb8f84deeefaaf74bc285fc2534111a78a5f12ff Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: David Fries Date: Sat, 9 May 2015 10:48:10 -0500 Subject: [PATCH 1/5] add an option to not grab keyboard focus when a reminder is displayed While it can make it easier to dismiss (if it grabs focus through the activateWindow call), it also means if you are typing and a reminder comes in it will both get those keystrokes and a space or return will dismiss the reminder before you have a chance to ever see what the reminder was about, which assumes you are even looking at your screen to see the reminder box flash up, if you are typing in a paper you might not even know. --- korgac/alarmdialog.cpp | 12 +++- korgac/alarmdialog.h | 1 + korgac/alarmdockwindow.cpp | 15 +++ korgac/alarmdockwindow.h | 7 +++ 4 files changed, 34 insertions(+), 1 deletion(-) diff --git a/korgac/alarmdialog.cpp b/korgac/alarmdialog.cpp index 6bbd867..59c5790 100644 --- a/korgac/alarmdialog.cpp +++ b/korgac/alarmdialog.cpp @@ -567,7 +567,11 @@ void AlarmDialog::show() KWindowSystem::unminimizeWindow( winId(), false ); KWindowSystem::setState( winId(), NET::KeepAbove | NET::DemandsAttention ); KWindowSystem::setOnAllDesktops( winId(), true ); - KWindowSystem::activateWindow( winId() ); + if ( grabFocus( ) ) { +KWindowSystem::activateWindow( winId() ); + } else { +KWindowSystem::raiseWindow( winId() ); + } // Audio, Procedure, and EMail alarms eventNotification(); @@ -1036,3 +1040,9 @@ void AlarmDialog::removeFromConfig( const QList &ids ) genGroup.sync(); } +bool AlarmDialog::grabFocus( ) +{ + KSharedConfig::Ptr config = KGlobal::config(); + KConfigGroup generalConfig( config, "General" ); + return generalConfig.readEntry( "GrabFocus", false ); +} diff --git a/korgac/alarmdialog.h b/korgac/alarmdialog.h index 41acee6..8f298d4 100644 --- a/korgac/alarmdialog.h +++ b/korgac/alarmdialog.h @@ -123,6 +123,7 @@ class AlarmDialog : public KDialog void updateButtons(); void toggleDetails( QTreeWidgetItem *item ); void showDetails( QTreeWidgetItem *item ); +static bool grabFocus( ); Akonadi::ETMCalendar::Ptr mCalendar; QTreeWidget *mIncidenceTree; diff --git a/korgac/alarmdockwindow.cpp b/korgac/alarmdockwindow.cpp index 35343be..8fe6ecf 100644 --- a/korgac/alarmdockwindow.cpp +++ b/korgac/alarmdockwindow.cpp @@ -45,6 +45,7 @@ AlarmDockWindow::AlarmDockWindow() KConfigGroup config( KGloba

Bug#886437: qt5core packaging breaks qDebug
Package: libqt5core5a Version: 5.9.0~beta+dfsg-1 Severity: important As a fix for bug 805399, the file /etc/xdg/QtProject/qtlogging.ini was added to disable debug output from Qt (using *.debug = false). This fix breaks the developer experience, because it makes qDebug() do nothing when working on a Qt application. The way it's supposed to work is that KDE apps and libs are supposed to be using categorized logging (qCDebug, qCWarning etc.), with severity "debug" being disabled by default. This way, the default category, the one used by qDebug(), should keep working. Bug 805399 shows for instance this line: org.kde.kded5[4940]: org.kde.kurifilter-shorturi: path = "xterm" isLocalFullPath= false exists= false url= QUrl("xterm") This comes from KIO (which I maintain). Investigation shows this one has been fixed : since KDE Frameworks 5.23, the logging category is defined as QLoggingCategory category("org.kde.kurifilter-shorturi", QtWarningMsg); which means warnings (and above) are enabled by default, but debug is disabled by default. The debug messages from kioremote don't exist anymore since commit 2a3b74df in plasma-workspace (the code has now moved to kio). So, overall, I think the underlying issue is fixed, we're trying to be better citizens by using qCDebug and by disabling debug output for all specific categories (since Qt 5.4 which supports it). Conclusion: please remove /etc/xdg/QtProject/qtlogging.ini again. -- David Faure, fa...@kde.org, http://www.davidfaure.fr Working on KDE Frameworks 5

Bug#801308: umbrello: Can't save to file - "UMLDoc::saveDocument moving with error"
Package: umbrello Version: 4:15.08.1-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Dear Maintainer, * What led up to the situation? After starting the application umbrello, even if there's or not some content in the diagram, saving file shows up a dialog box saying: "There was a problem saving file: /path/to/the/file/to/be/saved * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? Starting umbrello in CLI to see log messages and see the error as: klauncher not running... launching kdeinit klauncher not running... launching kdeinit klauncher not running... launching kdeinit couldn't create slave: "Cannot talk to klauncher: The name org.kde.klauncher5 was not provided by any .service files" umbrello: UMLDoc::saveDocument moving with error = "/tmp/umbrello.X20558" to QUrl( "file:///home/groolot/file.xmi" ) But fortunatly, the temporary file "/tmp/umbrello.X20558" exists and contain the appropriate content as created inside umbrello. Bug#941430: Kalarm sound, image alarms never worked, and then text alarms stopped working

Bug#945562: libqt5core5a: Update to 5.12 breaks KDE login
Package: libqt5core5a Version: 5.12.5+dfsg-2 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, I had not rebooted my Deiban/testing system since mid-October. When I did, my KDE session was unustable. After entering my password into sddm, the screen began flashing wildly with my restored session windows visible between the flashes. The end result was a mish-mash of the KDE login animation and my restored windows and a system that was unresponsive to keyboard input and mouse clicks. After much trial and error and several system restores from backups, I narrowed the problem down to upgrading from qt version 5.11.3+dsfg1-3 to version 5.12.5+dsfg-2. I suppose there is a slight chance that the latest versions of libkf5xmlgui and plasma-integration are also to blame since the qt upgrade forced them to be upgraded too. I'm currently forced to use XFCE since KDE is unusable. Interestingly, KDE programs like konsole and dolphin show no ill effects when run under XFCE. The mythtv installation I build myself and uses Qt and OpenGL also works fine. The problem does not appear to have anything to do with my personal KDE configuration. I created a dummy user with no existing configuration and the problem still occurred. Finally, the problem does not occur on another system that I maintain which uses the nvidia-legacy-390xx graphics driver. Perhaps the problem is related to something in the intel graphics driver on this old, Ivy Bridge system. Please let me know if there is any other information you want me to provide like logs or things you want me to try. Bug#945562: Acknowledgement (libqt5core5a: Update to 5.12 breaks KDE login)
I forgot to mention one additional thing. After qt is upgraded to 5.12, the sddm login screen hints at a problem. If I move the mouse cursor around, especially crossing over the buttons and text entries, the screen very briefly flashes to another image. The login screen remains functional, though, and I can succesfully log into any other desktop environment except KDE. David -- David Engel da...@istwok.net
Bug#921032: kalarm: Window frame is missing, after alarm appears when full-screen application is running
In order to ensure that the alarm window appears on top of a full screen application, KAlarm uses a Qt mechanism to bypass the window manager. This has the side effect of removing the window frame. Without this, the alarm might be shown under the full screen application and therefore be invisible. So this is not a bug. The bug which prevented the defer dialog from being accessible when a full screen application is running has now been fixed for the next KDE release, 19.12.1, by git commit https://cgit.kde.org/kalarm.git/commit/?id=870c2a6173d83b1989e948bdfb97cf0c2f9bb886 -- David Jarvie. Bug#291867: konqueror: Can't generate preview thumbnail for RealVideo files
Package: konqueror Version: 4:3.3.1-4 Severity: normal If I have a directory full of images and videos, Konqueror will happily generate preview thumbnails for each one until it reaches a RealVideo file, at which point it will stop generating thumbnails and sit there with the progress wheel whirring forever. Presumably KDE is not able to generate a preview for such files, in which case it shouldn't try to. This is preventing it from generating previews for the rest of the files in the directory. As KDE naturally doesn't ship with a RealMedia plugin, Konqueror probably shouldn't have any handler set as default at install time. See http://lists.fini.net/pipermail/ldap-interop/2005-January/000208.html and search for kcheckpass. kscreensaver invokes kcheckpass like so: kcheckpass -c kscreensaver -m classic -S 13 This results in: Communication breakdown on write Once kcheckpass is setuid it works. According to the post referenced above, the real fix is to write a setuid wrapper to access the credentials cache. I don't know if debian is even using that cache; I can't find it. Regardless, kcheckpass will fail when ldap authentication is used currently. Adding the setuid bit fixes it. This should probably be considered a workaround until a safer, more permanent fix is found. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (650, 'unstable'), (600, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.4.27-1-386 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#298534: kmail crash when moving emails between to folders on same imap server, same account
Package: kmail Version: 4:3.3.2-2 Severity: important (Kcrash output follows) I have a config with an inbox imap folder and i created on the same server, at the root a 'courrier triƩ' folder with different box for mail organization. Everyday i take the mails from various mailing list am subscribed to and do a right click -> move to -> and i choose one of the various box, one for each list in fact. This worked fine. For a while. Now am stuck with something quite strange which suddenly appeared. For one of the destination box, if i move more than one mail at a time to the destination, i randomly get a kmail crash. The probability of crash is proportionnal to the number of mail move at the same time. However, if i select more than 4 emails, crash seems to be for sure. I did not upgrade for this crash to appear. The same version of my whole system worked well yesterday. I tried to upgrade as a result , but it did not help. I have to mention, this does crash for only 1 folder/mailing list. So i tried to create a new folder and move those mail to the new mail folder. Baad. This crashes to. So i conclude, something in the mailing list (the apache struts mailing list ;) is causing kmail to crash when moving the mail :/ The other mailing lists am subscribed to have no problems. As a last try, i checked at one main difference between the mailing lists. Struts one was more productive and had several discussion threads. I when to option of inbox folder to discover those fact - inbox had the 'organized by discussion thread' checked (sorry french version may not be the exact name) - inbox had also checked, but greyed as depend on previous option, 'thread organized by mail subject' - What is strange is that the visual of box indeed did organized by thread. when i deactivated both, i could at least move my mails. conclusion: One part of kmail GUI thinks mail are thread organized and one part does not. When moving a thread root message, the GUI tries to update it's view and mess up with his thread tree, resulting in crash. To solve my problem I created /etc/X11/Xsession.d/95source-profile which contains only the following line : source $HOME/.profile I noticed that /etc/X11/Xsession executes .Xsession or .xsession but does not source it, hence the env vars problem. Bug#307201: Konqueror displaying undesired behaviour at www.deviantart.com
Package: konqueror Version: 4:3.3.2-1 When I go to www.deviantart.com and haven't logged in so the Username and Password boxes and login button are showing, they vibrate up and down a pixel very rapidly and do not allow text to be entered in to the their fields. For anyone who has found this a problem you can go to http://shop.deviantart.com/join/ to log in using Konqueror and not face the same problems as with the normal login mechanism. Package: konqueror Version: 4:3.3.2-1 When I go to http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/default.stm in konqueror there is a main article at the top followed by two articles below that (they are taking up half the space of the main story) and two more articles below them however they are contained within a green band (I'm not completely sure if it is Green as I am colour blind), that green band draws up incorrectly as it is supposed to be straight but is broken up across the bottom. Bug#307202: More detail
I wish to add that I am using an Nvidia graphics card (nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce MX 440 AGP 8x]) using the Nvidia drivers (built from nvidia-kernel-source 1.0.7174-3) and some unbranded generic monitor but has happened since I first started using the nVidia drivers. This happens on resolutions 1280x1024, 1280x960, 1024x760, 800x600 and downwards I presume. It doesn't seem to occur with the basic "nv" drivers at 1024x760 but I have never managed to put them on a resolution other than that. This also seems to happen on the Politics, Health, Business, Wales, Scotland, England, UK and World sections but not the Science and Nature, Education, Northern Ireland News front page and Entertainment which are fine.
