Do you have ksynaptics/qsynaptics installed? If so, remove them.

Ah, it seems you have ksynaptics installed. Remove it because currently
ksynaptics is incompatible with a new synaptics driver. This should get
previous normal behaviour back. When this bug gets closed, feel free to
install ksynaptics again.

kde 3.4 on the way

2005-02-28 Thread Modestas Vainius
KDE 3.4 is approaching to the final release. What are your plans regarding
packaging 3.4rc1 for debian? Having in mind current NEW queue processing
speed, it won't get into main archive (I guess, experimental would be just
right for it) for at least one/two/three months if it were packaged some time
around these days. However, it would still be great to be able to install
kde3.4 from a private repository (yeah, I know that kde3.4 is not a candidate
for sarge, but there are people like me, who prefer using the latest
software)...

Oh thanks. I had a suspision that there was something wrong with debian-qt-kde
mailing list as there was no cummunication among developers happening. I'll
follow pkg-kde-talk then.

That's great. Thanks. I'm running debian pure64 so I'll test if your packages
don't FTBFS on amd64 (when there are more of the kde packages available)

phonon-backend-vlc already has a strict build dependency on libphonon-dev (>=
4:4.7.0.0). So whatever fixed the bug was not libphonon 4.7 but something from
your build environment.

Anyway, this means that the patch from the bug report is necessary, binNMU may
not be enough.

Bug#793826: must depend on libqt5sql5-sqlite

2015-07-27 Thread Modestas Vainius
Package: kactivities
Version: 5.12.0-1
Severity: important

Hello,

kactivities package must depend on libqt5sql5-sqlite. E.g. it is needed
for kactivitymanagerd to start. Symptoms:

--

(no kactivitymanagerd after this)

SQLite plugin dependency seems to be hardcoded in the kactivities codebase.

Without kactivitymanagerd started on KDE startup, KDE will attempt to
start kamd at various occasions (see below) imposing a *full freeze* of UI
for ~25 secs each time.

* KDE startup
* on dolphin startup
* on the first query in krunner
* probably other places as well

This leads to really bad user experience while not being of grave level
as everything still mostly works.

kdebindings depends on python-all-dev and hence python-kde4 pulls in python2.5
via dpkg-shlibdeps. That's because python-kde4 contains bindings for both
python2.5 and python2.6 at the moment. However, everything should be
binNMUable so when python2.5 is gone, our Suggests should be gone after binNMU
too. I don't see a problem here, it's only suggests anyway.

kde bindings for python 2.5 pull them in [1]. What dev package (instead of
python-all-dev) do you suggest to build depend upon in order to avoid that
python 2.5 dependency? python-dev? Then what's the use of that python-all-dev
package anyway?

What is wrong with:

# aptitude install '?source-package(kde-l10n)?name(^kde-l10n)'

Straightforward and unlikely to break.

Metapackages are mostly for users. However, personally I don't want users to
install all languages easily (as this would be purely due to laziness, there
is no person speaking all languages in the world). People like you or
administrators who really know what they are doing and that they really want
all languages can use the aptitude command above.

So you want to install ALL kde-l10n packages but you can't afford to install
aptitude? What happened to using the right tool for the job? Even if you don't
want to use aptitude for installation of packages, just use `aptitude search -
F%p ` to get the list of packages and feed it wherever you want. And why
do you need to remove it afterwards? It's not malicious and it's a tiny bit in
comparison with what you're installing here.

FWIW, I did my best to suggest a solution. I'm sorry, that aptitude is not an
option for you for whatever the reason, but original request remains wontfix.
As I said in the previous mail, I view kde-l10n-all package as bad practice in
general. I simply don't want it to be in the archive (i.e. too easily
accessible) in order to reduce very HUGE [1] (even -dbg packages are smaller)
unintentional bloat on user systems. I'm sorry, but as far as I'm concerned,
your arguments do not overweight my considerations against this metapackage.

The script ran into impossible situation here. shared/default-x-display-
manager returned gdm when gdm was not installed. Did you use debconf preseed
or something similar?

Anyway, I will make postinst exit gracefully in this case.

Can we both agree that this bug is not release-critical? Many users including
me can start akregator fine. You probably ran into some kind of cache
corruption issue here. It should be rare and many users will never see it
hence it does not qualify as grave or serious, imho.

So apparently you disabled klipper autostart (see below how)...

When you quit klipper via tray icon -> right click meniu -> Quit, it prompts
whether you want it to start it on KDE startup.

Therefore I think this problem is more like user configuration error than a
bug. Can the bug be closed?

This supports my assumption that the problem is cache corruption.

If I could reproduce it, I would agree it's RC. But now there are too many
variables. To make things worse, akregator developement isn't very active
upstream.

Bug#600805: "MIGRATED to testing" mails do not reach debian-qt-kde@lists.debian.org anymore

2010-10-20 Thread Modestas Vainius
Package: lists.debian.org
Severity: normal

Hello,

starting with April/the 2nd half of March 2010, "MIGRATED to testing" mails
like [1] do not reach debian-qt-kde@lists.debian.org mailing list anymore. The
last mail of this type is dated 13 Mar 2010 [2]. For example, there should have
been another "pkg-kde-tools MIGRATED to testing" on 4 Apr 2010 [3] and numerous
other mails in the following months. Are they getting caught in the spam
filter?

Those mails are important and informative for developers so it would be great
to get them back.

It's very likely that this change would break "Start new session" feature of
KDE which works fine at the moment. While I could live with having it broken
on kFreeBSD, that's definitely not acceptable for Linux where this problem
does not manifest itself.

The bug we are facing here is that kdm starts on vt2 when it's not supposed to
even bother with VTs below 7. ServerVTs=-7 setting in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc
takes care of it (on Linux). However, apparently ServerVTs does not work on
kfbsd for some reason (nor it's present in default kdmrc). Finding that reason
would be the real fix and I will look into it later today/tomorrow. It could
be as easy as #define which does not cover kfbsd (I hope).

Yes, but it's not that simple. The code needs porting which I'm trying to do

kdebase is a deprecated dummy transitional package. kde-standard is a primary
metapackage for KDE desktop in Debian. It does not take care of alsa though.

I have a hackish patch ready on VM (iirc it is usable). Just I don't have time
to do more testing and proper upload right now. But I will get to it
eventually, don't worry.

Unfortunately, kdm state on kfsbd is not that good overall. Restart/shutdown
does not work from KDE sessions, kdm restarts whether it's not supposed to. I
planned to look into this as well but I got distracted by kfbsd keyboard
layout issues and eventually got overloaded with work. So this bug will have
to wait a bit.

It's gnome-settings-daemon crashing, not kolourpaint4. Whatever kolourpaint4
ends up doing, unrelated app should never crash. So reassigning the bug where
it belongs.

On the unrelated note, gnome-settings-daemon still takes over KDE desktop so
don't expect KDE team to care about that evil program.

All it takes is starting nautilus in KDE environment by accident. And boom.

All that stuff in bug report is useless because both this debian bug and
upstream bug deal with consequences. When you see this crash and backtrace,
the archive file had already been cut short and the data had already been
lost. akregator is simply unable to read corrupt archive file on startup and
rather than handling this condition gracefully, it crashes. However, there is
no information how and when akregator fails to write correct archive file or
otherwise corrupts it.

So basically this bug is impossible to fix without a reliable way to reproduce
it from the start to finish. During my 2 years of using akregator, I have
never had this problem so there is not much I can do.

No.

> The two are from my point of view RC

No, the first part is not RC because:

1) it is rare enough
2) there is no data loss involved

There is no info about the 2nd part and according to upstream, the bug has
been there since etch (!!!) meaning two debian stable releases already have
it. However, the debian bug has only been reported recently. This tells a lot
about commodity of this bug.

You may argue as much as you want but probability of this getting fixed is
nearly 0% since it has not been fixed for many years and there is obvious lack
of information. What is more, metakit has no future. Once akregrator is
rewriten based on akonadi, this will go away.

unblock: a bunch of KDE SC packages

2010-12-04 Thread Modestas Vainius
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: freeze-exception

Hello,

I have recently made a series of uploads for fixing issues in KDE SC and I
would like to get those package revisions into Squeeze. First of all, thanks
for quick unblock of the following:

kdebase-workspace/4:4.4.5-5
koffice/1:2.2.1-4

Now remaining packages:

* unblock kdenetwork/4:4.4.5-2

This revision fixes an RC bug (#603661) which breaks kopete ICQ support for
all users. AOL has recently sold ICQ and, as a result, ICQ main login server
address was changed. The fix is trivial: change ICQ server address in kopete
to the new one. The patch also includes an standard KDE update script for
changing the address in the user config file (if present).

The upload also solves circular dependency between kopete and libkopete4. This
might ease a job for apt and friends during upgrades (#580044).

* unblock kdepimlibs/4:4.4.5-2

While the debian bug is of normal severity (#600907), the issue might have
more severe implications. After all it's a crash and memory management bug
which typically are a cause of security problems. Anyway, in my opinion, the
two-line patch is too trivial to be ignored.

* unblock kdeaccessibility/4:4.4.5-2

When I looked at the upstream code of kttsd, I could only bang my head against
the wall. Yes, it is that bad and it's beyond me how KDE project could release
kttsd in that state to the users. It turns out kttsd 4.3 was just fine but
they decided to port it to speech-dispacher. Rather than doing it properly,
they only merged a somewhat working KTTS daemon back, commented most of
configuration code out and released kttsd 4.4 in this ridiculous state leaving
many configuration core and GUI elements not working.

Obviously, this is not on par with expectations for Debian stable release and
#599825 describes only a small fraction of problems. I considered removing
kttsd from archive but it's pretty tightly integrated into KDE and it's pretty
important for accessibility purposes. So in 4:4.4.5-2 you see what I had to do
to restore KTTS configuration to a usable state. Patches are relatively huge,
but they mostly add new or uncomment old GUI related code. Trust me, there is
no other way to do this. In hope that my efforts were not wasted, I ask for
unblock for this revision.

P.S. This leaves Debian Qt/KDE team with two RC bugs (#582953 and #590147) on
kdepim which in my opinion date as old as Debian etch. Their real cause is not
known and hopes for getting them fixed are low after so many years. What is
more, they are rare.

Misconfigured TV cards like yours are not that common at all and settings

Nevermind, there is no such thing. Try wiping out ~/.kde/share/config/kttsdrc
and check if speech-dispatcher actually works with spd-say command.

Basically, the feature works for some since 4.5 while it is broken for others.
Situation might be better in KDE 4.6. Stay tuned.

Your #580269 was closed by mistake and we missed your previous message.

Hello,

solid sends shouldDisconnect() signal each time udhcpc renews a lease.
Obviously, this is undesired and kind of harmful behaviour especially if lease
renewal time is short.

Well, depending on the versions you upgraded from you will probably need to
install firmware-linux-free and/or firmware-linux-nonfree. Or you proprietary
drivers broke, or whatever ... I don't think this might have anything to do
with KDE.

As far as I know (it's been long time since I used that thing), nvidia
installer has --uninstall option. But it used to be insufficient though it's
better than nothing. Also reinstall mesa binary package after uninstalling
nvidia because nvidia (un)installer may remove some system files.

Sorry but "first alphabetically installed language" as default makes
absolutely no sense. System language is at least some kind of criteria which
is based on user preferences expressed while configuring the system

Of course it's because of them. But vanilla kmix does not work with PA at all.

This might happen if your Internet connection is flacky. kio_imap4 is known
not to recover if your Internet connection was cut for some time (e.g. TCP
problems). You have to restart kio_imap4 like

close kmail
$ killall kio_imap4
(wait until all kio_imap4 processes die, maybe even use $ killall -9
kio_imap4)
start kmail

That's normal.

What about other mail clients? FWIW, I'm writing this answer from kmail
connected to my account via IMAP. So the bug does not everyone and I'm pretty
sure the problem is the one I described above. Marking appropriately.

If there is nothing in autosave, then there is nothing to recover. 4.4.6 or

just dismissed those mails when kmail recovered them after upgrade to 4.4.6.

Those gadgets do not take other resources than disk space as long as you do
not use them. You can remove them because plasma-scriptengines (which is only
a metapackage) is not Depends in the KDE dependency chain. I don't see a
problem here.

What's more, this is not a place for emotions about company X. Support for
those gadgets is part of official KDE workspace package, you like it or not.
So in my opinion, recommends is pretty reasonable relationship in this case.

plasma-scriptengines is already only recommended by KDE-essential kdebase-
workspace-bin as you posted below.

P.S. kdebase metapackage is going to die as soon as squeeze is released.

The segfault is *IN* speech-dispatcher code, you posted it yourself. Fix
speech-dispatcher problem first, then we can do something about kttsd if the

kmix target is KDE desktop. The fact that tray icon does not appear in $random
desktop environment is not a grave bug:

"makes the package in question unusable or mostly so, or causes data loss, or
introduces a security hole allowing access to the accounts of users who use
the package."

but an important one (at best):

"a bug which has a major effect on the usability of a package, without
rendering it completely unusable to everyone."

What is more, that might as well be tint2 bug. Test kmix under something more
mature (e.g. icewm or similar).

Your reasons for serious are just wrong. There is NO metakit source package in
Debian so there is NO dublication. What is more, metakit library is hopelessly
outdated upstream (2007 is the latest release date) and there is no proof that
new version would fix current akregator problems. Actually, the metakit lib
that is currently embedded in the akregator (2.4.9.5), has no interesting
changes in comparison with the current metakit stable release (2.4.9.7) (yes,
I have actually checked). So please do not exagerate bug severities based on
pure guesses. You could have saved some valuable time for everybody.

Future is akonadi-based akregator and, obviously, we are not interested in
maintaining a dead library just for the sake of it.

Moreover, unless you can actually confirm the fix for 590147, do not add false
information to the BTS.

P.S. Users should never set serious severity unless they can pin point Debian
policy violation. You obviously failed to do so in this case.

I don't see any gain. But if you submit a working patch for akregator, we

would suggest you not to waste time either. The library has been dead for 3

Hello,

On antradienis 22 Kovas 2011 08:23:23 Christian PERRIER wrote:
> I think that "error" is more well suited for this warning

I disagree. Warning is not an error by definition. It is not wrong to have
phonon-backend-null installed if you know what you are doing and you are doing
this intentionally. As I made some changes to prefer phonon-backend-null
whenever libphonon-dev is installed (for buildds), I added this warning to
avoid *accidental* installations of this package on the user systems.

What is more, from debconf-devel(7):

error This datatype is used for error messages, such as input validation
errors. Debconf will show a question of this
type even if the priority is too high or the user has already seen it.

The behaviour of this datatype clearly conflicts with my intentions and
current scripts. I will not accept this change. Other changes are ok.

Maybe somebody will build backports. Though it's troublesome as 4.4.4+ has
many changes. If I were you, I would switch locale to UTF-8. Do not delay
invetitable.

Personally I'm not interested. Updating squeeze-proper to 4.4.3 is out of the

Maybe but it's a non-default configuration hence this bug is by no means
"very important". Switch locale to UTF-8 and use something like convmv to
convert filenames. Or, since this appears to be a xine backend problem, you
might as well switch Phonon backend to gstreamer or vlc. Or upgrade to
testing.

What I call squeeze-proper is official squeeze release (stable). There is also
squeeze-backports.

Yes. Never.

That could be an option if the bug was important enough. However, as long as you
do all the work including extracting the patch & testing it, I might consider
*trying* (that does not mean succeeding) to push it to the next stable revision.

But lack of control comes both ways. I can't force you to follow my (imho,
reasonable) suggestions but neither you can force me drop everything and go to
fix the bug which is "very important" for you. But we could have helped each
other and fixed the bug in the end.

Nobody denies that there is a bug. Filename conversion is just one of
solutions.

Sure, feel free. You might as well have just switched to another phonon
backend as I suggested earlier. This would have been faster than looking for a
new app anyway.

By all means, you can use whatever you want and whatever works for you.
Sometimes radical decisions pay off big time due to unique features.

New upstream versionf of kde-config-tablet needs to be packaged. In the
meantime, uninstall kde-config-tablet package.

Bug#624679: 4.7 regression: QProcess::waitForFinished() is broken on kfreebsd

2011-04-30 Thread Modestas Vainius
Package: libqtcore4
Version: 4:4.7.2-3
Severity: grave

Hello,

QProcess::waitForFinished(timeout) with timeout > 0 (however, big enough) seems
to return false when the process has not finished yet (leaving
QProcess::state() in QProcess::Running). However, QProcess::waitForFinished(-1)
works fine.

This appears to be a regression in 4.7 (4.6.3 works fine). The bug triggers
quite a few random FTBFSes like [1], [2].

This happens because Qt on kfreebsd is compiled without monotonic clock
support [1] (or at least Qt thinks so). select() is interrupted by SIGCHLD [2]
and then qt_safe_select() code kicks in with its bogus calculation of timeout
during EINT [3] (basically, no monotonic clock -> you're screwed). Such
fragileness is a bug by itself, I don't care about too much at moment as
_POSIX_MONOTONIC_CLOCK is defined [4] so something is wrong with Qt checks.

OpenSSL license is THE reason. Or pure-GPL apps won't be able to link against
libQtNetwork which is unacceptable.

Well, at least openssl is not always loaded, but on demand. GPL app may not
ever use SSL and so openssl won't ever be in the same process space. While
there are multiple views on this kind of issues, you should agree that
explicit linking is worse.

Bug#625825: Some qatomic_arm.h inline functions do not compile with >= g++ 4.5 on arm

2011-05-06 Thread Modestas Vainius
Package: libqt4-dev
Version: 4:4.7.2-4
Severity: serious
Forwarded: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gcc-4.5/+bug/675347
Owner: mo...@debian.org
File: /usr/include/qt4/QtCore/qatomic_arm.h
Tags: wheezy sid
Justification: makes other packages to FTBFS on armel with gcc 4.6

Hello,

some QBasicAtomicInt functions do not build on armel with g++ 4.6 (Debian's
g++-4.5 seems to work), for example QBasicAtomicInt::fetchAndStoreOrdered()
[1]. While according to the Ubuntu report this one is forwarded to, the bug
probably is in the gcc itself (broken -fstrict-volatile-bitfields handling in
some cases), gcc upstream did not fix it in 4.6 despite efforts of Ubuntu
people [2].

This issue will trigger many Qt based packages to FTBFS (like kde4libs [1])
because offending code is inlined in the headers. So we need a solution quick
and fast, either in gcc or Qt (or both). I'm going to work on Qt solution and
already have an idea how to fix this problem (a "hack").

What I'm concerned about is that your patch may not be complete. There are
more similar "checks" in ktar.cpp. As I absolutely have no idea how tar works,
this will take time to handle properly (or hopefully upstream responds in the
meantime). Thanks for forwarding the bug.

Basically, QByteArray is a wrapper class on top of char*. For example,
QString::toUtf8() returns QByteArray as well.

Well, ok, but that still does not explain why you cast one "check" to
(unsigned char) leaving others untouched. QByteArray::operator[] also returns
a _signed_ char. So what makes you think those chars will always be <= 127 ?

You don't need to worry about this anymore. Fix is pending but might take some

Hello,

[ Disclaimer: I've already asked security team about this upload and they told
me to do it via s-p-u ]

The upload would fix 3 CVEs and bug #612675. Change-by-change details are below
while full diff is attached.

* Fix CVE-2011-1168 (Konqueror partially universal XSS in error pages) by
  cve_2011_1168_konqueror_xss.diff.

  http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-kde/kde-sc/kde4libs.git;a=commit;h=20deb674

* Fix CVE-2010-3170 (browser wildcard cerficate validation weakness) for
  Konqueror by cve_2010_3170_cn_wildcards.diff.

  http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-kde/kde-sc/kde4libs.git;a=commit;h=ae934a0a

* Fix CVE-2011-1094 (kdelibs does not properly verify that the server hostname
matches the Common Name of the Subject of an X.509 certificate if that CN is
  an IP address) by cve_2011_1094_ssl_verify_hostname.diff.

  http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-kde/kde-sc/kde4libs.git;a=commit;h=2bfb1e47

  [ kde4libs non-security changes ]

* KTar: use unsigned arithmetic when calculating checksum of tar header record
(as per ustar specification). However, when reading archive, verify
checksum by calculating it both ways (unsigned and signed) and accept if
either matches (partially solves #612675). Implemented in
  ktar_header_checksum_fix.diff patch.

  http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-kde/kde-sc/kde4libs.git;a=commit;h=af9374ec

* Fix KTar longlink support when filenames are encoded in the UTF-8 (or other
multibyte) locale. Implemented in ktar_longlink_length_in_bytes.diff patch
(thanks to Ibragimov Rinat). Closes: #612675
