Bug#302424: ksysguardd doesn't start automatically
I added the system guard applet to my panel a few months ago. Then, about 2 days ago it started asking me to specify a connection type each time I logged in to KDE. Clicking 'cancel' to the selection dialog made the dialog box disappear and reappear asking the same question over and over. The solution appears to be to answer "custom command" and specify "ksysguardd" into the text box. That fixes the problem for future logins as well. This seems to have started being a problem for me when I upgraded to ksysguard 4:3.5.5-1 on 6th October. The previous version, ksysguard 4:3.5.4-2+b2, installed on 27th September didn't show this dialog at startup. Comparing the config file on disk before and after answering the dialog's question, I see that the change it makes is the following: --- .kde/share/apps/ksysguard/old/KSysGuardApplet.xml 2006-10-10 03:16:19.0 +0200 +++ .kde/share/apps/ksysguard/KSysGuardApplet.xml 2006-10-10 03:49:04.0 +0200 @@ -1,6 +1,7 @@ + ie. a single "" line was inserted before the first line. Perhaps the postinst script could be changed to insert this line in each user's KSysGuardApplet.xml file automatically if it doesn't already exist? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: kate-plugins Version: 4:3.5.2-1 Severity: important Hi, kate's make-plugin has a hardcoded make-command which is AFAIK not suitable for Debian. It uses "gmake", which normally isn't available on Debian I think, please change this to only "make" so that this plugin works out of the box, without creating a "gmake" symlink that points to make. I'll also file an upstream report so this hopefully will be more configurable in a future KDE version (hopefully before 4.0). Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: kpdf Version: 4:3.3.1-1 Severity: normal Kpdf fails to display PDF files that contain Japanese charactors; the pages shown looks cryptographic because of wrong handling of 16-bit TrueType fonts. While, with xpdf, they are OK to be viewed. This is because xpdf portion of kpdf is not well-patched, even though the xpdf package has been already patched. (As for xpdf's patch, see the changelog of xpdf 3.00-3 at http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/x/xpdf/xpdf_3.00-3/changelog . You'll see Hamish has added "upstream patch to fix handling of 16-bit TrueType fonts".) Enclosed is a file of collective patches extracted from Debian's xpdf package. Notice that the patch file contains the one that fixes another bug of kpdf's; a fix for possible crash of kpdf caused by calling FreeType's FT_Decompose_Outline with a non-outline object. Bug#389618: marked as done (ktimemon incorrectly reports slab usage)
Your message dated Tue, 10 Oct 2006 01:59:10 -0700 with message-id <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and subject line Bug#389618: fixed in kdeaddons 4:3.5.5-1 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: kdeaddons Version: 3.5.4-1 Tags: patch, upstream Forwarded: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ktimemon is reporting memory used by the slab twice. Once as kernel memory and once as user memory. For small slab sizes the effect of this is not noticeable, however once the slab is allowed to grow (running updatedb will do this) it will have the effect of making all of the memory appear to be consumed. A simple inspection of /proc/meminfo will show that ktimemon is reporting an incorrect usage. This can be alarming to the user. I have attached a patch that corrects the problem, by subtracting the kernel memory usage reported by ktimemon (this seems to only be the slab) from the user memory usage. I have also taken the liberty of filing a report in the kde bug tracking system for this issue as well. Ways of overriding KConfigured stuff
Hi there, I'm preparing desktop-base with the Etch artwork. [0] I would like the desktop-base package to hold as many artwork types as possible for the various desktop environments, and to override the per desktop environment defaults when installed. The current problem I'm facing is: how do I override the kdesktoprc Wallpaper and its friends settings cleanly? I would like your opinion on the best way for desktop-base to set the default Wallpaper for the Etch timeframe, and only the default (users may still change wallpaper afterwards). Current technical research I made: It seems to me that KDE uses the "KConfig" mechanism which relies on "KStandardDirs" to build the list of directories to search per file type. [1] Some environment variables (KDEDIRS, and XDG_CONFIG_DIRS) are included in the list of directories to search, but there's no interface for a package maintainer to set these vars cleanly. The desktop-profiles package aims at solving a similar task: I think it builds a KDEDIRS var dynamically on each login based on the result of commands and on group membership; however, I don't want to add such a dependency on desktop-base so late in the cycle and have some technical objections to the tool. [2] I've also found debian/patches/10_kstandarddirs.diff in kdelibs which hardcodes an additional "/etc/kde3/" directory to the standard list of "config" directories. GConf has a clean mechanism to handle this: via dh_gconf, you may install and register a gconf defaults file which has an associated priority and will be included in the default gconf path. Bye, [0] It's pulled by the desktop task starting with the last tasksel upload. It is not required for desktop environments to depend on desktop-base, each DE should continue shipping its own default. [1] see kdecore/kstandarddirs.cpp in kdelibs [2] A sample implementation of setting the default wallpaper via desktop-profiles is in #348702. My problem with desktop-base is that it will generate temporary files on each login (at least in the GConf case), and requires special configuration of all login entry points (each shell has to be configured to hook the script, there's a Xsession script, etc.). PS: Obviously, I'll have to change other config items, such as the splash screen, and the KDM theme. -- Loïc Minier <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Any setting in a kdesktoprc file in the search path will be used, the first value "wins" unless this has been restricted by the administrator through marking the key, group or file as "immutable" The search path can be checked by $ kde-config --path config processing order is from left to right > I would like your opinion on the best way for desktop-base to set the > default Wallpaper for the Etch timeframe, and only the default (users > may still change wallpaper afterwards). As I see it either by installing a default kdesktoprc in /etc/kde3 or by including a default in /etc/skel/.kde/share/config > It seems to me that KDE uses the "KConfig" mechanism which relies on > "KStandardDirs" to build the list of directories to search per file > type. [1] >Some environment variables (KDEDIRS, and XDG_CONFIG_DIRS) are > included in the list of directories to search, but there's no interface > for a package maintainer to set these vars cleanly. These variables are not set on Debian, i.e. their defaults are used. Since they are system wide variables, I guess changing them by a package maintainer is similar to changing any other such variable in Debian. Additionally KDE's environment can be augmented by putting files into the env/ directory at any level of the search path. Only requirement is that they have ".sh" as their extension, but since they are sourced by startkde they do not have to be executable themselves. I use this locally to extend the resource path to include /usr/local as a preferred prefix: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ % ll /usr/env insgesamt 4 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 31 2006-07-08 18:22 10-kdedirs.sh [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ % cat /usr/env/10-kdedirs.sh export KDEDIRS=/usr/local:/usr Further information about all this here[1] and here[2] Cheers, Kevin [1] http://www.kde.org/areas/sysadmin/ [2] http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdebase/userguide/kde-for-administrators.html -- Kevin Krammer, KDE developer KDE user support, developer mentoring pgpA4sHq7Pwn3.pgp Description: PGP signature

Package: kwin Version: 4:3.5.5-1 Followup-For: Bug #391357 I also had the problem with flashing windows when focus follows mouse and tried Sune's patched version: http://mirror.pusling.com/kwin_3.5.5-1_i386.deb (1027042 bytes from 2006-10-08) The flickering disappeared and focus follows the mouse correctly now. However, there still is another problem: Clicking in the title bar or on the edges of windows very often produces strange results like - click on title bar does not raise window from background to foreground - window can no longer be dragged with left click in title bar - right click on title bar generates wrong wenu: namely the same as if right clicked directly on desktop instead of Operations Menu of the window - window cannot be resized by dragging left or right edge (no double arrow) - Buttons on title bar don't work (Minimize, maximize, close, etc.) These things are not deterministically reproducible, however, they happen very often (and once it happens it happens regularly). My settings for Titlebar Actions are: ActiveInactive Left Btn Raise Activate & Raise Middle Btn Nothing Activate & Lower Right Bth Operations Menu Operations Menu Rudolf -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.17-2-686 Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages kwin depends on: ii kdelibs4c2a 4:3.5.5-1core libraries and binaries for al ii libart-2.0-22.3.17-1 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libaudio2 1.8-2The Network Audio System (NAS). Bug#392227: kmail: "Warning - Kontact popups.
Package: kmail Version: 4:3.5.4-1+b1 Severity: important I use KMAIL with "Disconnected IMAP account setting". As of some updates to kde or kmail I keep getting pop-up's on kmail like: "Warning - kontact" "Mails on the server in folder IMAP Account/inbox/"Some Imap folder" were deleted. Do you want to delete them locally? UIDs: x,y,z, etc" It is very anoying and also keeps taking priority on the desktop while I'm working on some other desktop with a different program. This behaviour also happens in Debian Sid. It would be nice to have a checkbox for "Always perform this action" "yes". Sincerely. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: kdebase Version: 4:3.5.5-1 Severity: serious Justification: violates policy The latest package update introduced a strict dependency on hal and pmount. While the hal dependency is correct, the pmount dependency is not. KDE simply calls the hal Mount()/Unmount() methods, nowhere in the KDE code, pmount is actually used. If hal would use pmount internally to do the actual mounting[1], fine, let the hal package declare the correct dependencies. Adding the pmount dependency to kdebase is simply wrong and violates the policy, which states that strict dependencies have to reflect that the "depended-on package is required for the depending package to provide a significant amount of functionality" which is not the case here. Please see also #388341, the Recommends: pmount of kdebase-kio-plugins does not directly violate the policy, still it should be removed for the same reasons. Cheers, Michael [1] Apparently with hal-0.5.8.x, pmount is not used anymore by hal to do the mounting. Since version 0.5.8, hal does not use pmount anymore to do the mounting. Please check the source code, if you don't believe me. So now I have pmount installed, without any good reason. And still, it's up to the hal package, to add the dependency on pmount or not, because only the hal package knows, which tools it uses internally to do the mounting. Argh, you're right, I didn't read the last blurb. Thanks. That said, pmount is still used (_directly_ by KDE) in some code, so while I'll drop it from kdebase's Depends, it'll stay as a Recommends with kdebase-kio-plugins. > And still, it's up to the hal package, to add the dependency on > pmount or not, because only the hal package knows, which tools it > uses internally to do the mounting. I still disagree here, because this was an unusual case where the backend's choice of tool affected the frontend in an important way. But now it doesn't matter anyway. Bug#391502: marked as done (Incorrect dependency on pmount)
Your message dated Tue, 10 Oct 2006 17:21:14 -0700 with message-id <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and subject line Bug#391502: fixed in kdebase 4:3.5.5a-1 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: kdebase Version: 4:3.5.5-1 Severity: serious Justification: violates policy The latest package update introduced a strict dependency on hal and pmount. Bug#391672: marked as done (quanta: Recommonds non-free and transitional phpdoc)
Your message dated Tue, 10 Oct 2006 18:17:26 -0700 with message-id <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and subject line Bug#391672: fixed in kdewebdev 4:3.5.5-1 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: quanta Version: 4:3.5.4-1 Severity: serious Hi, I was cleaning out my system today and noticed that quanta recommends phpdoc, which is a transitional package. Presumably this should be changed to php-doc instead. However: I then noticed that php-doc is in non-free, which is more of a problem (and which is why I've marked this serious) -- policy states that packages in main cannot recommend or depend on contrib/non-free packages. I'm not sure what the correct solution is here; it's been some time since I was working with quanta. IIRC, in the days when I looked after it the recommends was to keep the documentation pane behaving itself. What happens is that quanta ships with php.docrc, which provides the index; thus the documentation pane gives you a full table of contents that you can navigate around, whether the real docs are actually installed or not. I guess the easiest solution is downgrade this to a suggests, and leave a note somewhere for the user to read explaining how to fix the "file not found" errors in the documentation pane (solution: install php-doc). Hmm. Actually -- having looked at this now, you get file not found even if php-doc _is_ installed. This is because the /usr/share/apps/quanta/doc/php symlink is broken (it points into the old /usr/share/doc/phpdoc instead of the new /usr/share/doc/php-doc). Thus even if the user does have php-doc installed, the documentation pane will refuse to show it to them. So.. apologies for the stream of consciousness here (and for what has turned out to be two bug reports in one); I'm kind of rushed ATM. My suggested solution is: 1. Change "Recommends: phpdoc" to "Suggests: php-doc" (note that both the relationship and the package name have changed); 2. Add a note to README.Debian explaining what to do if you get file-not-found errors in your documentation pane (solution is to install the relevant doc package); 3. Fix the /usr/share/apps/quanta/doc/php symlink to point to /usr/share/doc/php-doc/html instead of /usr/share/doc/phpdoc/html . Step (1) will be enough to fix the RC element of this bug, but steps (2) and (3) are easily done at the same time.
