Hello, kdm takes a lot of time to start or restart.
When X server starts, the cursor takes the shape of
a clock, and it takes a lot of time on this state.
Then, the login window appears and all is OK.

It also occurs on restarting kdm.

In kcm_screensaver, I'm unable to configure The Matrix screensaver.
It does have config options (man xmatrix), they worked in Debian KDE 3.1,
and they work in a.n.other vendor's KDE 3.2. In our 3.2, if I click on
Setup for The Matrix, kcontrol pauses for a few seconds and then pops
up the "no configuration available" box. Other screensavers can be
successfully configured, though I haven't tested them all I'm afraid.

I'm testing my system in Xinerama mode, and it comes up fine.
However, I've been reading in reviews of KDE 3.2 that it is supposed to
have a new and much improved module for Xinerama configuration. I've
seen screenshots where a "Multiple Monitors" item appears just below
"Multiple Desktops" under "Desktop", and I certainly can't find that.

Also "Peripherals -> Display -> Multiple Monitors" says that "This
module is only for configuring systems with a single desktop spread
across multiple monitors. You do not appear to have this configuration."
But I do, at least I think I do, assuming it is Xinerama it is referred
to. I type this on the second screen.

However, I also note that "Desktop -> Panels" understand that I have a
Xinerama set-up, as it has the "Xinerama screen:" box.

persist on your computer it's mostly due to an X configuration problem.

The Mac OS X-Bar style menu has a 1-pixel wide non-active edge. This makes it
impossible to just hit the mouse pointer against the upper edge of the
screen, making targeting more difficult and flagrantly violating the KDE User
Interface guidelines. The bug existed in the main KDE code as well, but has
been fixed long ago. Other distributions (e.g. SuSE) also do not exhibit this
bug, so it likely is a problem with the debian version. It should be quite
easy to fix. Considering that this all but obsoletes the mac osx- menubar
feature, the minimal effort it will require to fix this should be put in
rather soon. The main KDE bug tracker marked this FIXED almost six months
ago. The number on bugs.kde.org is 61560, and yes, I am aware that it is
marked a Kicker bug. It still applies.

I am using the Debian unstable current as of May 16, 2004, including KDE
3.2.2

The default setup, where deleted messages are moved to a local trash
folder, is quite countrary to the IMAP spirit as it means downloading
the message to the local trash folder.

An alternative (which I do in my setup) is to specify a remote
trash folder, so that KMail can use IMAP message moving feature
without the need to fetch the message.

What I'd like to see instead as the default is flagging the messages
I delete as "Deleted" using the IMAP flagging mechanism, and then
having the deleted messages purged on exit (manually or automatically
dependent on the user setup). This is the way it's done in Pine
(the reference IMAP client) and, IIRC, in nsmail as well.

I hope it is not difficult to implement as the deletion code already
uses flagging messages deleted when they're moved away, and purges
them when the move is completed, according to what I see in the IMAP
intercepts.

the use the commande "DELETE Message" instead of "Move to Trash".

kmail has that, and purges mail on folder change.

hi, i am setting up a Debian / SE/Linux (unstable) system so i have
kde 3.2.2 installed.

permission to create a file /var/mail/lkcl.lock is banned, and i do
not believe it sensible to grant access to that directory just to
create a lock file!

therefore i tried FCNTL instead.

and... it doesn't work, because the command "lockfile" doesn't exist.

so i did apt-get install lockfile-progs (which should be a dependency
on kmail, shouldn't it? i dunno) but there doesn't appear to be a
command lockfile in that package, only lockfile-create and stuff.

help?

l.

kmail recommends procmail, that provides the necessary lockfile
command.

I've used konsole for a long time. It works good for me.
However, today strange situation happened. I was logged on by ssh on
remote machine. I was running shell script with a lot of output lines.
While browsing the script output with ctrl-pgdn/ctrl-pgup konsole
disappeared.
I had two konsole sessions opened, so couldn't close both of them by
accident.
No bugreport window from KDE appeared (the one with Konqui, saying, that
application did something wrong (SIG11 or sth)).
I couldn't reproduce the problem (but will try to), but I am pretty
sure that the bug exists somewhere, because:
a) I didn't do anything special, which could cause observed behaviour
b) I have no strange problems with system - everything works as expected

So, while it is still easy to close the bug with UNREPRODUCIBLE tag, I'd
like to give it a chance and try to find and fix it.

there is no useful information in that bug report: no backtrace, no
steps to reproduce, hence not tagging UNREPRODUCIBLE, just *closing* it.

Package: kmail
Version: 4:3.1.4-0woody1

I don't know if this is the same bug as mentioned in #240632.

I upgraded some machines on sunday evening (June, 6th), using
apt-get update and apt-get upgrade, with stable and testing
in my sources.list. Everything works fine except kmail, which
now crashes with a sigsegv immediately after launch.

Surprisingly, everything works fine, when I log into one of
the machines from another machine which runs unstable, and then
start kmail via x11-forwarding over ssh.

dist-upgrade to testing does not solve the problem either (using
testing no longer produces a sigsev, but kmail does not start
due to unresolved symbols in a series of libraries).

dist-upgrade to unstable solves the problem, but since the
computers belong to a production system, I do not want to run
a complete unstable distribution on them.

Here is the output from the crash manager:

I am using KRDC to connect to Windows Terminal Server, it appears that
normal Copy-Paste procedures between remote host and local host no
longer work. In the past I used KRDC with VNC and the copy paste issue
didn't occur.

if there is .pc files, yes, you can just drop .la files. *though* it
can mean that all that builds-depends upon qt4 has to be rebuilt, so
check it's not a too big list, and warn the maintainer of those
pacakges.

Package: kdelibs
Version: 3.5.2-1

the kdelibs packaged in debian unstable is given the wrong version number, .
This means that you confuse us all when we try to track down bugs in the
source code so that KDE may make a new release of kdelibs, specifically to
fix the bug in which konqueror doesn't display pages after following links on
slashdot (among others sites).

In addition, it besmirches the quality of the KDE releases because you're
packaging unreleased software prematurely and not informing the users of that
fact, unless they read the changelogs, which we all know nobody does before
they submit bug reports to KDE (or potentially just stop using it entirely).

So, in short, you should either package only an actually released copy of KDE,
or you should change the version number to, for example 3.5.pre2-r52364-1

thanks

this is not true. kdelibs is based on the upstream's tarball, like
always. Moreover, we do frequent branch pulls that are documented in the
changelog. I don't see any harm here.

closing the bug. If you have further issue with our dealing of KDE in
debian, please contact us directly so that we can sort the problem out,
but the BTS is not really the best place for it IMHO.

  thanks.

what does "xset q dmps" answers you ? I suspect that one of your video

  you can restore it using:

  xset +dmps

have you an example of such a web page ? don't forget that HTTP
headers are (AFAICT) mandatory and supersedes the http-equivs headers.

hi there,

just upgraded all of kde to 3.3.1-3 and after that i cannot get rid of
the username in the login window (do not know, whether it is taken from
the user logged in last, or from the auto-auth field, etc.). on systems
that offer xdmcp on the net i consider this as a security issue.

even a downgrade of the kdm debian package does not restore the old
functionality. might this be caused by some kde lib?

this looks like a firewall or sth like that problem. especially if you
can't reproduce it on any other place.

are you really sure nothing can prevent the connection to run
smoothly, either on your machine or on the remote one ?

Bug#368208: khelpcenter does not build search index

2006-05-20 Thread Jens Rucknagel
Package: khelpcenter
Version: 4:3.5.2-2+b1

When I try to build a search index for the application manuals, I get the
message:

Global symbol "$kdekdehtmldir" requires explicit package name at
/usr/bin/khc_docbookdig.pl line 94.
Execution of /usr/bin/khc_docbookdig.pl aborted due to compilation errors.

I tried to fix the problem:
# diff /usr/bin/khc_docbookdig.pl /usr/bin/khc_docbookdig.pl.debian
94c94
< my $findpath = "$kdehtmldir/$lang/";
---
> my $findpath = "$kdekdehtmldir/$lang/";

But this fix is not sufficient - now only one file is searched for an index.
Khelpcenter prints out:

INDEXDIR: /home/ruena/.kde/share/apps/khelpcenter/index/
FINDCMD: find /usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/ -name index.docbook

"recommends" don't get installed by default.

you therefore have a policy violation bug.

at the very least you need to notify people of the requirement.

i've been through this with you (debian people) already.

how am i, a long-term user of apt-get, along with tens of thousands
of other long-term users of apt-get, supposed to magically imbue debian
 policy into our heads?

if you don't use anything other than apt-get, and have not used
anything other than apt-get, there's nothing in "apt-get" that say
"don't use apt-get", how the hell is anyone supposed to know???

> this is completely in the debian's philosophy. Recommends are packages

sounds like a complete cop-out to me.

please do look at what happened with xserver-common and with
 xbase-clients.

i got a system installed some time ago where xfs was installed,
but i didn't know - and there was no way _to_ know - that you have to
 install x-window-system, x-window-system-core etc.

as a result, there were no fonts.

i wasted _three_ days on this - and exactly the same stupid stupid "oh
if you're not using aptitude off" reasons were given.

eventually, presumably after several similar complaints from people
other than myself, someone saw sense to take up my advice, which was to
put a verbose "warning" in saying "error, guys, i have no fonts. you
either need to install xfs and configure it or you need to install the
font packages, and you probably simply forgot to install
 x-window-system. go fix this."

you would do well to stop hiding behind some stupid policy (which
no sane debian USER and i said USER not "policy writer" is going to
 read) and sort this out.

please stop. I use kmail for IMAP only, and don't have procmail on my
machine. it just works, and do so for every one that uses POP or IMAP
only. that's maybe 90% of what people (under unix or windows or ...)
use. that makes perfectly sense.

"standard" users are supposed to use aptitude, deyti, dselect, ... and
for them that just works. user that uses apt-get directly are
experimented users, that are expected to know more about debian. if you
want less surprises, use aptitude, or force the installation of
recommends manually.

there is no policy-based reasons behind that, all is explained in the
*USER DOCUMENTATION*, quote: « Note that aptitude is the recommended
program by Debian to install a package and/or to upgrade your
system. »[1] or in the install manual[2]

I don't like aptitude either, but recommended packages are not strict
depends so that user that *KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING* can have
a "lighter" system (with less packages) to support *just* what the
functionnalities they need. that's well documented, not hidden in
complex developper-only documentations.

kpdf is able to open .pdf.gz and .pdf.bz2 files AFAICT.

anyway, in most decent shells (e.g. bash and zsh) you can do:

  kpdf <(zcat foo.pdf.gz)

I won't close the bug, since it's valid, but I'm 99% sure upstream

this looks like a kwin bug, do you still have it ? if yes, does a
fresh user has it on your computer ? if no, then consider sending your
.kde/share/config/kwinrc

If you still encounter that problem, I'd say your kwinrc has been
corrupted, and that it'll be quite hard to know why. If you don't
encounter the bug anymore, please close it.

not at all. the "recommended" tool to install packages is aptitude, that
installs recommends by default. It is assumed that people that do not
use aptitude (or a tool that installs recomends - dselect does IIRC)
know what they are doing and are aware enough to look at the
recommends.

this is completely in the debian's philosophy. Recommends are packages
that gives a big gain to the package that recommends them, but that are
not *necessary* for it to work. procmail for kmail is exactly in that
case.

Bug#368267: konqueror: kfmclient might do better to be packaged differently

2006-05-20 Thread Urpo Lankinen
Package: konqueror
Severity: wishlist

I'm not sure where to report this, but I'm filing this under konqueror
because kfmclient appears to be packaged there.

The problem is quite simple, and affects some other bugs (for example,
#352870 describes one of the symptoms). Specifically, KDE seems to depend
on kfmclient to open URLs, *even* when you use kcontrol to pick another
web browser. I pointed it to gnome-moz-remote or firefox, and when I
clicked on any link in any kde app, it always complained about kfmclient which
wasn't installed.

I'm not a KDE expert, but to me it seems that *if* kfmclient is used to handle
all URLs even when Konqueror is not used, it's a part of infrastructure that
should be put to some more "fundamental" package (kdebase-bin?).
Consider, for comparison, GNOME's equivalent, /usr/bin/gnome-moz-remote,
which is in gnome-bin rather than epiphany-browser!

nothing is displayed. Both 50 % and 75 % work fine, and this can - for
example - be reproduced with
