Bug#358737: KDE screensaver / economy functions won't start, when it's time

2006-03-24 Thread Gyorgy Bakos
Package: kde
Version: (5:45)

Hi all

I am using Debian etch, KDE 3.5.1 on my laptop.
In middle december the screensaver / hibernate ... worked fine, but now
these will never turn on!
I tried to create a new user, but noticed the same. It seems to me that
something is preventing the clock to count up to that time which is setted
to start screen saver or hibernate...

I used hibernate very well, but without timing I can not start it and there
are no buttons to do that manually. (Or is there?)
Anyway I noticed the same problem on my desktop machine after an update, the
previous could start screensaver, this not. Of course in the setup if I
press test it works...

Cheers

Gyuri

Parts of KDE fsync after writing as a result disks on laptops cannot be
spun down.

One component that definitely does it is the organizer/alarm which
touches its file at least once a minute and fsyncs after that.
There is also another component which touches
$HOME/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals
While mostly cosmetic it is definitely annoying to the point where I am
tempted to rebuild the entire thing with fsync redefined as "do nothing".

Greetings,

I'm not sure wheter this is a xserver bug, but for me it is not possible to
draw a connection to the correct package.
Howerver:
System: Debian Testing, nearly clean. (Woody base-system dist-upgraded via
apt, then task x-window-system installaed + kde , kdm installed).

For more information see attached logs

1st: KDM is startet directly
2nd: KDE is startet via xdm.

Something seems to be really wrong here...

Keep smiling
yanosz
Note that your system uses syslog. All of kdm's internally generated messages
(i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it uses) go to the
daemon.* syslog facility; check your syslog configuration to find out to which
file(s) it is logged. PAM logs messages related to authentication to authpriv.*.

I started KDE. During the startup process, I pressed Alt+F2 and started
to enter an URL. While entering the URL, the list of possible
completions (certain previously entered URLs) was shown. Since KNode
belonged to my saved session, KNode was started and requested access to
the digital wallet "kdewallet". A message window popped up, telling me
that KNode wanted this access.

The KWallet message window was shown in front of the URL entering dialog
but the completion list was shown in front of the KWallet message window
although belonging to the URL entering dialog. From this point on, all
keyboard and mouse events were ignored. Neither the window manager nor
any application could be controlled via keyboard or mouse. So it was
necessary to kill processes via the "kill" command.

We installed two new KDE systems yesterday with
`apt-get install x-window-system kde`. This worked like a charm, but
when we logged in for the first time, the desktop was
extraordinarily ugly, for the following reasons:

  - the background looks like downtown houston[0], except more boring
  - thee desktop icon filenames have a shadow that makes them
basically unreadable
  - font anti-aliasing is turned off, catapulting us back to the
pixelised eighties, or earlier

it would be nice to have the default configuration be a little more
friendly to the retina. i suggest using the default_blue background,
which has become a KDE standard, to choose white text on clear
background without shadows for the desktop icons, and to turn
anti-aliasing on by default. the only argument against that, which
i can see, is performance. however, if that's a concern, then KDE is
not right in the first place, especially not 3.x.

0. no offence intended

Bug#275156: adding in "security" option into "Desktop" ignored by "Configure Desktop"

2006-03-24 Thread Fathi Boudra
reassign 275156 kdebase
retitle 275156 kcm display module root and read only enabled
severity 275156 wishlist
tags 275156 upstream

thank...

After investigation and discussion on irc that you can find below, the correct
way to achieve this seems to use X-KDE-RootOnly and X-KDE-HasReadOnlyMode.
But kcm display module should also use getuid() or KUser().isSuperUser().
A forwarded bug will follow soon, when bugs.kde.org add kcmdisplay will be
added in component list for kcontrol.

12:52 < fabo> is there a documentation about desktop entries like
X-KDE-RootOnly and X-KDE-HasReadOnlyMode ?
12:55 < EricCartman-iBoo> fabo, I also couldn't find it atm, what exactly you
want to know ?
12:56 < fabo> i try to make display kcm module rootonly/read only for user
12:56 < fabo> looked at lilo kcm module and find these parameters
12:56 < EricCartman-iBoo> but it's the in my dell in the service right now I'M
afraid let me see the backups
12:57 < EricCartman-iBoo> yeah true, it's related to that parameters
12:57 < EricCartman-iBoo> where you have failed ?
12:57 < fabo> i tried it and that doesn't do expected behavior
12:57 < fabo> i've got administrator mode button, but can change options
12:57 < EricCartman-iBoo> you've mimicced a working .desktop and it didn't
work ?
12:58 < fabo> yes
12:58 < EricCartman-iBoo> you should keep track of being root or not in the
code iirc
12:58 < EricCartman-iBoo> with getuid etc
12:58 < EricCartman-iBoo> but kcontrol should disable the whole widget by
defualt I guess
12:58 < EricCartman-iBoo> it's been quite a while I can't really remember
12:59 < fabo> you can easily test adding X-KDE-RootOnly=true and
X-KDE-HasReadOnlyMode=true to display.desktop
13:01 < EricCartman-iBoo> yep you should check if the user is super user or
not in the code
13:01 < EricCartman-iBoo>
http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/playground/network/knetd/kcmmodule/config.cpp?rev=520394&view=auto
13:01 < EricCartman-iBoo> see this
13:01 < EricCartman-iBoo> ctrl+f for KUser
13:03 < fabo> user isn't super user
13:05 < fabo> i can expect that display module doesn't check correctly user
using isSuperUser() ?
13:10 < Riddell> fabo: kcmmodules have to disable themselves is they don't
want to run in non-super user mode
13:11 < fabo> ok, so the only one solution to achieve this is to use kiosk
tool ? or report wishlist to display module ?
13:17 < Riddell> fabo: fix display module

Hi,

I found that it is not possible to play an mp3
email attachment with noatun.

When starting noatun from command line (without &) it
goes into daemon mode and the process spawned from
the shell is terminated.

If it is spawned from any mailcap aware mail program,
the program believes that the application has finished and
removes the file before noatun has read it.

I consider this as an upstream bug. noatun should not fork
itself into the background.

regards
Hadmut

Bug#358838: kde CD player cannot play a CD, but totem can? What's up?

2006-03-24 Thread Mr. Jan Hearthstone
Package: kde
Severity: important

*** Please type your report below this line *** When I try to play a
music CD using "applications:/Multimedia/" from Konqueror (which, by the
way, is a very likeable critter indeed) I get a message telling me that the
path is incorrect.
Yet totem opens it and plays the CD immediatelly!
What's up?
Thank you sincerely - Mr. Jan Hearthstone.

When I upgraded to this version of KDE several days ago, a user reoprted
that font antialiasing had been disabled. I use windowmaker on the same
machines, and there's nothing wrong with the fonts in my sessions, only
in KDE. I went into the "Control Center" and turned on antialiasing
with RGB subpixel rendering. This was enabled, however all fonts now
had very visible red and blue fringes that make them unreadable. The
systemwide default is for RGB-aa, and I can verify with xmag that this
works properly and looks great in my windowmaker sessions. In KDE most
letters have much larger red/blue fringes (though not wider than 1
pixel) and it's very visible and ugly. Changing the hinting has no
apparent effect. Worse, disabling subpixel rendering doesn't work at
all - it's either ugly red-and-blue fonts or ugly un-aa fonts.
Everything is very hard to read either way.

[P-a-s] Please enable %firebird2/amd64 to help unblock qt-x11-free.

2006-03-24 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Greetings.

As an amd64 user (though admittedly not an official porter), I have
been following the new official buildd's progress with some interest,
and observed a problem with the potential to block quite a few
packages: although the firebird2 source package rightly claims to
support amd64 (I just verified that 1.5.3.4870-3 builds without errors
on my system), Packages-arch-specific lists it as specific to
(hurd-)i386. Could you please bless it for amd64 as well?

Thanks!

[Ordinarily, this wouldn't necessarily be a big deal; however, the old
unofficial buildd built a few versions of firebird2 despite the P-a-s
entry, so qt-x11-free wound up adding a build-dependency on
firebird2-dev on November 29. As such, it will now be in perpetual
dep-wait unless something is done to free it, and in turn hold back
quite a few other packages -- particularly given gnome-vfs2's
counterintuitive indirect build-dependency on qt-x11-free by way of
avahi.]

Bug#302696: Strange graphics problems

2006-03-24 Thread Ronny Standtke
Hi Fathi,

I solved the problem but forgot to update this report, sorry.

All that was necessary was the following line in the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 or
now in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Option "XaaNoPixmapCache"

and adding the following line to /etc/modules:

intel-agp

To solve this bug the Debian istaller must execute the corrections above when
detecting the Intel Corp. 82815 CGC grafics card. Is it possible to move this
bugreport to the Debian installer team?

Greetings & Thank you

Ronny

Bug#358869: qt4-qtconfig: qtconfig-qt4 doesn't ever save changes, which makes it useless

2006-03-24 Thread Helge Hafting
Package: qt4-qtconfig
Version: 4.1.1-1
Severity: important

I run qtconfig-qt4 (or just qtconfig with /etc/alternatives set up for
this) and can do some changes, such as selecting the CDE look instead
of motif. I then save and exit. Rerunning qtconfig shows the
old motif again though, and my qt4 app also looks like motif.

Seems the changes isn't saved at all. The same problem exists on i386.
