missing bits for the transition

2005-01-01 Thread Adeodato Simó
  in a nutshell, these are the bits that affect the KDE 3.3 transition
  to sarge. I talked to Andreas Barth and he agrees to the security
  fixes being uploaded just after the transition happens. as I couldn't
  discuss this with any other kde person, I now request that if someone
  objects to that decision being made final, to speak now. thanks.

  the list:

to be closed by a RM:
#266478: new kdelibs should not enter testing alone

to be somehow addressed:
#286690: korganizer: clicking on an event causes segfault, related to LDAP
#285670: kbabel inserts meta-data into msgstr

to be ignored for the transition, to be fixed asap once it happens:

For what it's worth, this bug seems to have been fixed upstream for 3.4 with
the following two commits:

As I already commented in the bug report, the PO file submitted by the user is
malformed: it lacks a header, so KBabel inserts it in the best place it
finds. Of course I leave this open to Ben, but in my opinion, it can be
closed, or the severity lowered to wishlist, and retitled to something like
"kbabel should warn on malformed files".

Bug#238020: Dangling symlink x-session-manager.1.gz: Should point to Undocumented.gz?

2005-01-01 Thread Malte Cornils
Hello,

I've been bitten by the lack of a man page for startkde in a somewhat more
serious way:

I've initially used gnome as the session-manager, then saw the light and did
update-alternatives --config x-session-manager
and switched to startkde.

However, gnome's session manager *does* have a man page, and the alternatives
system slave link to x-session-manager.1.gz is still there as a dangling
symlink.

Cron regularly complains bitterly about the dangling symlink now.

Either gnome-session should remove the slave-link (but how?
update-alternatives does not have any hooks for it), ksmserver should ship a
man page for startkde and register it as a slave link, or a slave link to the
undocumented man page should be created.

Not that I'd like to, but I could probably try to create a patch implementing
the third possibility given some time. Should I do this?

-Malte

Package is ksmserver 3.2.2-1, but judging from the Changelog and #238020, the
problem is not yet fixed even in experimental.

  programs with missing manpages no longer have a dummy one pointing to
  undocumented.7; that changed in policy a while ago.

  so, until startkde gets its manpage, the slave-link should really be
  removed by update-alternatives. in fact, and though I'm not that

  I don't know what response is expected from the KDE Team. just to do a
  catch-all reply: yes, we are aware of the issue but it's out of our
  domain. as you probably already know, it is caused by a t-p-u

  days of the libtiff transition). this was regarded, we can imagine, as
  the lesser of all evils by the Release Team.

  I believe the Release Managers would have allowed for individual
  kdegraphics 4:3.2.3-1.1 builds to trickle into testing, but afaict no
  arches other than i386 and powerpc managed to build it (I have no
  ACCEPTED mail, and no binaries in the mirrors either). some RM should

  please let us know if we can be of any help.

I'd like to chat with upstream about this at some point, but in the
meantime Alejandro is perfectly right - this bug should not be grave.
In the worst case it is poor error handling.

Lowering the severity accordingly.

Dear Adeodato,

I realise that doing 'apt-get -b' works when 'dpkg-buildpackage' does not.
Don't know why.
Please forgive me if I do an error (I use to use dpkg-buildpackage instead of
apt-get
very often).

Please find in attachment the output of a successful apt-get -b (which I
interrupted) v.s.
the output of dpkg-buildpackage on kdepim 3.3.1-3/unstable.

Unfortunately this report has been marked with an important severity, since the
build seems
to work fine with apt-get I guess the severity should be considerably decreased.

Thanks, Cheers, Jean-Damien.

  The reason that using dpkg-buildpackage fails for you is that you pass
  the '-nc' when calling it:

% dpkg-buildpackage -uc -b -nc

  Try to build without it instead. I have to check whether this is a bug
  in the package or not (I believe is not).

Bug#238020: Dangling symlink x-session-manager.1.gz: Should point to Undocumented.gz?

Whoops. My bug report was not specific enough; I did not mean
the /etc/alternatives/x-session-manager.1.gz symlink (this one is removed by
code in dpkg's update-alternatives), but the
symlink /usr/share/man/man1/x-session-manager.1.gz. gnome-session.postinst
(and xfce4-session.postinst etc) create this symlink:

f [ "$1" = configure ]; then
  update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/x-session-manager \
x-session-manager /usr/bin/gnome-session 50 \
--slave /usr/share/man/man1/x-session-manager.1.gz \
x-session-manager.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/gnome-session.1.gz
fi

Once there, it is never removed unless gnome-session is uninstalled. However,
our systems usually have both gnome and kde installed.

I assume update-alternatives should not only remove the slave symlink
in /etc/alternatives when changing stuff with --config, but also remove the
one in /usr/share/man/man1/x-session-manager.1.gz.

The relevant code is (lines 538 ff., dpkg 1.10.25,
file /usr/sbin/update-alternatives):

sub config_alternatives {
 [...]
# Link slaves...
for( my $slnum = 0; $slnum < @slavenames; $slnum++ ) {
my $slave = $slavenames[$slnum];
if ($slavepath{$preferred,$slnum} ne '') {
checked_symlink($slavepath{$preferred,$slnum},
"$altdir/$slave.dpkg-tmp");
checked_mv("$altdir/$slave.dpkg-tmp", "$altdir/$slave");
} else {
&pr("Removing $slave ($slavelinks[$slnum]), not appropriate
with $versions[$preferred].")
if $verbosemode > 0;
unlink("$altdir/$slave") || $! == &ENOENT ||
&quit("unable to remove $altdir/$slave: $!");
}
}

}
}

So, it removes the symlink in $altdir (/etc/alternatives), but not the one in
the man hierarchy. I could not find any other place in update-alternatives
that does this, so maybe this is a bug in update-alternatives/dpkg. Feel free
to reassign to that package.

Also, a relevant bug on the dpkg package might be #220044,
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=220044

How should I proceed?

  seems to work here, e.g. if I configure kopete to play a sound upon
  receiving a message, it works.

  can other people check whether it works for them or not?

  Iacopo, I think it would be best if you describe the exact steps that
  you follow, e.g. what application, what event, what sound... perhaps
  we can have a look at it in the following days.

In my opinion, the most fruitful and natural play of the mind is in
conversation. I find it sweeter than any other action in life; and if I
were forced to choose, I think I would rather lose my sight than my
hearing and voice.
