Bug#240027: kdm: KDM does not start correctly on boot

2004-04-10 Thread Chris Cheney
As far as I can tell it is already using /dev/urandom among other
things. Unless I am reading the code incorrectly or there is a bug
somewhere it should be using /dev/urandom according the
kdm/backend/Imakefile setting.

Domi any ideas?

When a menu item from the Debian menu system has a title which contains
the '/' character, a sub-menu is generated with all characters before
the '/' character, then a menu-item is created under that with the full
title.

For example, in the simh package:
  ?package(simh):needs=text section=Apps/Emulators\
title="SIMH Honeywell 316/516" command="/usr/bin/h316"

Generates the menu structure:
  Utilities
Emulators
  SIMH Honeywell 316
SIMH Honeywell 316/516

Package: menu
Version: 2.1.5-14
Severity: minor

On the KDE3 mapping of the Debian menus, applications in the 'Viewers' submenu
such as mplayer, Real Player, and xine are listed under the Graphics submenu,
not under Multimedia as it seems they should. For example, the Graphics
submenu has a paintbrush icon and contains still image editing. The
Multimedia submenu has an icon of a CD and filmstrip, much more indicative of
movie watching software.

I suppose the root of this problem is the division between menu choices in
Debian do not harmonize well with KDE's categories, e.g. "Graphics", "Sound",
and "Viewers" in menu versus "Graphics" and "Multimedia" in KDE3.

I see no easy solution short of a Debian Policy change to match KDE
(unlikely), or customizing the KDE3.1 menus to match 'menu's
categories when KDE3 goes into SID.

2004-04-10 Thread slaven peles
Actually there is still a menu/KDE problem present. When I try to update-menus
I get following output:
localhost:/root# update-menus
sh: line 1: /usr/bin/kdm-update-menu: No such file or directory
localhost:/root#
As a result there is no 'Start new session' entry in the kde menu. This
problem was reported under both #237820 and #242975. The later is still
outstanding. It would be good if it can be fixed before next kdm upload or if
some user workaround can be suggested.

Thanks,
Slaven

The only fix for this is to go in and delete the /etc/menu-methods/kdm
file. It has nothing to do with the "Start new session" option in the
kde menu. To enable that you must uncomment the extra servers in
/etc/kde3/kdm/Xservers. The menu-method will be removed when kdebase
is uploaded and really should have been a separate bug.

Bug#243096: kdelibs-bin: split fdo-menu into a separate package

2004-04-10 Thread Christopher L Cheney
Package: kdelibs-bin
Version: 4:3.2.2-1
Severity: important

The freedesktop.org menu support needs to be split into a separate
package to appease Bill Allombert. I have no intention of renaming the
menu-methods to kde specific names since they are not kde specific
(other than the name of the cache dir). After this is done anything that
follows the freedesktop.org menu standards can simply depend on the
fdo-menu package and use it for the Debian menu integration.

This bug was accidently merged into the set of bugs related to the
replacewith problem by someone. You should have seen that was what
happened when you looked at the bug but instead you reopened the
whole thing since you didn't unmerge it. :<

I am intending to fix this "bug" by creating a separate fdo-menu package
that implements Debian menu -> freedesktop.org menu conversion and have
already filed a bug against kdelibs-bin about that (#243096). Which I
have now merged with your bug.

> Also I received complaints that Debian menu in kicker is broken
> that I am investigating

The Debian menu in kicker works fine. I am using it here. There is a
remote possibility they could have old non-purged menu-method files
hanging around that kdebase 3.2.2-1 will forcibly remove similiar to the
problem some people are seeing with the old kdm menu-method that is no
longer used. The only complaints I have seen since the kdelibs 3.2.2-1
upload is that the kicker menu does work now. Someone actually filed a
bug stating it worked. bah

Thanks,
Chris

I'm not sure about the build process of kdm, but:
  domi: ~> strings /usr/bin/kdm | grep urandom
  domi: ~> strings /usr/bin/kdm | grep random
  /dev/random
  Cannot read randomDevice %"s: %s
  Cannot open randomDevice %"s: %s
  domi: ~>

As far as looking at kdm source code, apparently, after configuring, I
get:
  domi: ~/src/3_2_BRANCH/kdebase> grep DEV_RANDOM config.status
  s,@XDM_CFLAGS@,-Dlinux -D__i386__ -D_POSIX_C_SOURCE=199309L
  -D_POSIX_SOURCE -D_XOPEN_SOURCE -D_BSD_SOURCE -D_SVID_SOURCE
  -DUNIXCONN -DTCPCONN -DOSMAJORVERSION=2 -DOSMINORVERSION=6
  -DHASXDMAUTH -DFRAGILE_DEV_MEM -DDEV_RANDOM=\"/dev/random\"
  -DPOLL_DEV_RANDOM -DHAS_MKSTEMP -DHAVE_GETUSERSHELL -DUSE_SYSLOG
  -DUSE_PAM -ansi -W -Wall -Wchar-subscripts -Wshadow -Wpointer-arith
  -Wmissing-prototypes -Wwrite-strings -g3 -fno-inline
  -Wformat-security -Wmissing-format-attribute,;t t

( note: '-DDEV_RANDOM=\"/dev/random\"' )

I have spent a bit of time figuring out where this is coming from, and
apparently, it is generated with the Imakefile stuff in
kdebase/kdm/backend ( the part where it has "#if RandomDefines" must
be selected somehow ).

I haven't got time to look into this further atm, but I hope this
should already help...

cheers
domi

I wonder how DEV_RANDOM is getting set to /dev/random, the Imakefile
doesn't mention /dev/random at all. A grep of kdebase for /dev/random
turns up nothing for me, but it must be getting set somehow. :<
