The file is there, and it was there during the build (glibc hasn't been
upgraded or reinstalled since then)... I did just build and install a new
version of gcc/cpp however, so I'll schedule a new build of utah-glx and
see how that goes.

Bug#346171: libstdc++6 loses changelog/copyright on upgrade

2006-01-14 Thread Adam Conrad
This comes from you doing your directory->symlink migration in preinst,
rather than postinst (to see an example of it being done correctly, see
openssh-server, or php4-mysql as examples).

If you migrate in preinst, you remove the directory, create the symlink,
THEN dpkg removes your package's files (dutifully following the symlink,
and removing the other package's changelog and copyright)

If you do it in postinst, this snafu doesn't occur, and the world goes
on happily able to read changelogs and licenses...

I'm confident that other than one or two potential outliers, test build
results on powerpc and ppc64 should have the same number of regressions
as ppc64el, and also quite confident that where that's not the case, we
can get it fixed in a hurry, so please do those arches in lockstep with
the rest.

... Adam

PS: Switching hats to arm64, that one should also rev with the rest,
but I think that's probably a no-brainer anyway, given that it's
a new ports, where staying on the cutting edge is usually sanee.

The same command line works with g++-2.95 (2.95.4-22), g++-3.4
(3.4.3-1), and gcc-snapshot (20040717-1)

The same command line fails, even when lowering the optimisation
to -O1 and -O0, sadly. Since the maintainer can't compile with g++-3.4
(correct me if I'm wrong here), because that changes the C++ ABI, and
they can't lower the optimisation (as it still ICEs), it would be nice
if the fix from 3.4 could be isolated and backported to 3.3...

The .ii from -save-temps is attached. Let me know if you need any more.

Bug#119064: gcc-3.0: gcc should be a `Provides'

2002-02-01 Thread Adam Conrad
Actually... That's not quite how it works. The "gcc" binary package
comes from the "gcc-defaults" source package, which bundles up the
Debian-recommended gcc default for each arch... 2.95 for most, 2.96 for
ia64, and 3.0 for hppa.

Pentiumbuilder probably depends on "gcc" to make sure you get a sane
default for your architecture. There's nothing stopping you from having
the default compiler AND another installed though, and I'm sure you can
either futz with pentiumbuilder to make it use a non-default gcc, or
provide symlinks in your homedir to make it work.

The GCC maintainer(s) (of which I am not one) have made their position
pretty clear on this in the past. GCC alternatives are asking for
trouble, because maintainer machines may not always be running the
default compilers, and things get messy, from a distribution standpoint.

No it can't - it depends upon the gcc package. the only package which
supplies this dependency is gcc-2.95 hence the problem.
