Bug#474276: testsuite failures on arm

2008-04-04 Thread Martin Guy
Package: libffi
Version: 3.0.4-2

There are testsuite failures when building on ARM (which are then ignored...)

Running /home/martin/arm/arma/libffi-3.0.4/testsuite/libffi.call/call.exp ...
FAIL: libffi.call/cls_2byte.c -O0 -W -Wall execution test
FAIL: libffi.call/cls_3_1byte.c -O0 -W -Wall execution test
FAIL: libffi.call/cls_3byte1.c -O0 -W -Wall execution test
FAIL: libffi.call/cls_3byte2.c -O0 -W -Wall execution test
FAIL: libffi.call/cls_4_1byte.c -O0 -W -Wall execution test
FAIL: libffi.call/cls_4byte.c -O0 -W -Wall execution test
FAIL: libffi.call/struct5.c -O0 -W -Wall execution test
... followed by the same reports for -O2, -O3, -Os,
"-O2 -fomit-frame-pointer"

Interestingly, these specific tests all succeed under the new armel
port (ARM EABI).

these are expected to fail. closure support won't be implemented
anymore for the old ARM ABI.

Ah yes, there are two test runs, of which the first succeeds 100% and
the second:

Target is x86_64-pc-linux-gnu
Host is x86_64-pc-linux-gnu
Build is i486-pc-linux-gnu

fails. My apologies.

Package: gnat-4.3
Severity: serious
Version: 4.3.0-1

gnat-4.3 build-depends on gnat (>= 4.1), the current version of which
symlinks gnatgcc to gcc-4.1. gcc-4.1 does not support the
"-Wno-overlength-strings" option (added in 4.2).

During the configure step, we pass CC=gnatgcc to make sure we use the
compiler with support for Ada as the bootstrap compiler.

Unfortunately, on some architectures (most notably i386 and powerpc),
the configure step failed with:

> gnatgcc -c -g -O2 -W -Wall -Wwrite-strings -Wstrict-prototypes
> -Wmissing-prototypes -Wold-style-definition -Wmissing-format-attribute
> -Wno-overlength-strings -pedantic -Wno-long-long -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I.
> -I../../../src/fixincludes -I../include -I../../../src/fixincludes/../include
> ../../../src/fixincludes/fixincl.c
> cc1: error: unrecognized command line option "-Wno-overlength-strings"
> make[5]: *** [fixincl.o] Error 1

The problem, therefore, is that we mistakenly pass
-Wno-overlength-strings to gcc-4.1. This, in turn, appears to be due
to the configure script in src/fixincludes not correctly detecting
that gnatgcc does not support the option:

> Configuring in build-powerpc-linux-gnu/fixincludes
[...]
> checking whether gnatgcc supports -Wno-overlength-strings... yes

I am investigating but would welcome any help fixing this problem.

gcc-defaults 1.66 was built before gnat-4.3 on mips and mipsel; we now
need a manual bootstrap. This could be done by either building
gnat-4.3 in testing and uploading to unstable, or by building in
unstable, and modifying debian/rules2 setting CC to gcc-4.1 (or
gcc-4.2), and building with ignoring the build dependencies.

To avoid such scenarios in the future, gnat-4.3-base has been added as
a b-d to gcc-defaults.
